Leeds United handed transfer update on Cabral

Leeds United are now facing a stern transfer battle to sign Basel striker Arthur Cabral amid a recent update.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent weeks had suggested that Marcelo Bielsa’s side were one of several Premier League clubs interested in signing the £13.5m-rated star, and there was a significant development surrounding his future at Basel.

Italian publication Corriere dello Sport claimed that Cabral has called off talks with Basel over a potential new contract, with his existing deal with the Swiss club coming to an end in less than two years time.

And now, UOL claim that a number of other sides have been alerted to the striker’s performances, and that Leeds now face competition from the likes of Bayer Leverkusen, Benfica, Porto, Southampton and Fiorentina.

Fans would love him

One of the big concerns for Leeds fans this season has of course surrounded their worrying lack of depth up front, especially with Patrick Bamford being out injured for a number of weeks now.

The England international was their chief goal-scorer last term with 17 in the Premier League alone, and his injury this season has seen the Whites’ offensive threat take a real hit – they’ve scored just 11 goals in 11 top-flight games thus far.

In Cabral, those striking worries would be eased considerably.

FocusonLeeds said of the 6 foot 1 centre-forward: “His ability to find space and shoot with power and accuracy is really impressive. He really comes alive in the box and a calmness about him when in goal scoring positions. At 6ft 1 he also provides an aerial threat with 6 off his 18 goals coming from headers.

“Arthur isn’t overly quick in terms of his speed however, he also isn’t slow. Due to his movement in and around the box, he still finds himself in shooting positions a lot. If you combine this with his dribbling ability and quick feet, this helps him work room to gets shots off at goal.”

Indeed, earlier this season, the “relentless” Cabral made a piece of history, becoming the first player in the history of the Swiss Super League to score nine goals in the first seven games, surpassing the record of Christian Gimenez back in 2003/2004.

The man with 72 goals over his entire club career thus far would provide exceptional cover to Bamford while he’s out, and provide genuine competition for him when he’s back too.

Given the kind of prolific striker that he is, Leeds fans would surely love him at Elland Road.

Meanwhile, Leeds must finally sell this first-team star…

Dhoni and Bisla power Air India Blue to semis

Hurricane centuries from MS Dhoni and Manvinder Bisla helped Air India Blue hammer India Revenue by 143 runs in a Group A match in Mohali which was reduced to 42-overs a side due to rain. Dhoni showed the sort of big-hitting with which he made his name, slamming seven sixes and seven fours on his way to a 61-ball 106. Bisla matched him in sixes count, and hit 14 fours in an equally frenetic 154, as the pair piled on an unbroken second-wicket stand of 200 runs in 105 deliveries. Their partnership came on the back of a slightly more measured 162-run association between Bisla and Chandan Madan (74) for the first wicket.Air India Blue had amassed 362 at the Twenty20 run-rate of 8.61, and their bowling line-up, which had the likes of Harbhajan Singh and RP Singh, proved much too strong for India Revenue. Opener Ameya Shrikhande waged a lone battle for India Revenue, making a brisk 121, but with the rest of the top six not contributing much, they limped to 222 for 8 in their allotted overs. The crushing win puts Air India Blue in the semi-finals where they will face Tata Sports Club. For the second day in a row, rain caused the match at Dharamsala to be abandoned without a ball being bowled. Tata Sports Club’s Group C encounter against Indian Oil Corporation XI (IOC) was washed out on Thursday, handing them a place in the semi-finals by virtue of their victory over All India Public Sector Sports Promotion Board in the only completed match of the group. IOC were the unluckiest team in the tournament, being knocked out without facing a single ball as both their matches were rained out. There was no play at Visakapatnam as well, where the match between Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited and Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) was called off due to the death of Andhra Pradesh chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy in a helicopter crash. ONGC’s thumping win over Madras Rubber Factory on Wednesday gave them the points to secure a place in the final four, where they take on a strong Air India Red.Click here for Cricinfo’s report of the Group C match between India Cements and Air India Red in Bangalore.

Dhaniram and Ali revive Canada

An unbeaten partnership of 131 between Sunil Dhaniram (63) and Qaiser Ali (60) restored Canada’s hopes at Rotterdam, leaving the visitors on 206 for 3 at the end of the second day

ScorecardAn unbeaten partnership of 131 between Sunil Dhaniram (63) and Qaiser Ali (60) restored Canada’s hopes at Rotterdam, leaving the visitors on 206 for 3 at the end of the second day.Netherlands’ bowling attack struggled to find a decent length and any sort of consistency, allowing Canada to recover from their shaky start of 84 for 3. They finished with a lead of 163 and still have seven wickets in hand.Ali brought up his 50 in style with a hefty slog sweep for six, clearing the boundary with ease off Daan van Bunge. In an equally impressive manner, Dhaniram cracked a cover drive for four to produce his half century off Pieter Seelaar.Earlier in the day, Netherlands were bowled out for 229 – an advantage of 52 – with Nick Statham being the only man to produce a significant innings with 57, before being run out by Rizwan Cheema. Tom de Grooth was looking solid, but his innings was cut short at 36 by a handy stumping from Ashif Mulla off Umar Bhatti. The pick of the bowlers were Sandeep Jyoti, taking 3 for 59 with some impressive offspin, and Zameer Zahir who took 2 for 31 from 17 overs.

Newcastle: Players want Steve Bruce out

Craig Hope has dropped a major Newcastle United claim, regarding tension behind the scenes following the defeat to Tottenham.

What’s the talk?

According to the Daily Mail journalist, Jamaal Lascelles and Isaac Hayden had a bust-up after the loss and had to be separated by staff.

In the article, Hope revealed that a significant portion of the squad want Steve Bruce to be sacked before their clash with Crystal Palace, with the post-match bust-up leading to some players questioning the 60-year-old’s tactics in the dressing room.

He Tweeted: “Sources say players want new owners to intervene now & change manager as tensions rise.”

Delight

Newcastle fans will be delighted by this update from Hope in terms of the players wanting Bruce to be sacked this week. Whilst it is far from ideal to read that Hayden and Lascelles were scrapping with each other at full-time, it – at the very least – shows that the players are passionate and want to do well on the pitch for each other, although both players must find constructive ways to show it.

The playing squad are seemingly voicing their concerns to PIF about Bruce and their frustration could speed up the process, with Bruce hanging on by a thread as it stands. He was reportedly set to leave last week before the owners opted to keep him on for his 1000th game in management.

A 3-2 defeat to Tottenham at St. James’ Park on Sunday led to multiple chants calling for Bruce to be sacked, which may have been heard by Amanda Staveley and Yasir Al-Rumayyan, who were sat in the stands for their first game. This coupled with the unrest amongst the playing squad could lead to Bruce’s departure, which would undoubtedly leave the Toon Army delighted.

A recent survey, prior to the takeover, by the Newcastle United Supporters Trust found that 94.3% of supporters are keen to see him leave, with 95.3% predicting relegation from the top-flight. However, that second statistic could change if the 94.3% of fans are granted their wish and PIF sack Bruce, depending on who is brought in to replace him in the dugout.

What the survey does show is that the majority of fans want to see the ex-Aston Villa coach leave the club and that is why they will be buzzing with the players taking matters into their own hands to make it happen. It is now down to PIF to make the call and ensure that they replace him with the best candidate to lead the side forward.

Match was closer than we had thought – Dhoni

Dhoni and Chris Gayle gave credit to Yuvraj for India’s victory. Dhoni said Yuvraj had matured as a batsman over the last two years

Cricinfo staff27-Jun-2009MS Dhoni, the Indian captain, has said the first ODI against West Indies was closer than it looked despite the visitors’ 20-run win.”Most of the guys thought that we have won the game when they were seven wickets down but it was a mistake and hopefully we won’t repeat that,” Dhoni said. “It was more close than thought.”India scored 339, largely owing to Yuvraj Singh’s 102-ball 131.West Indies lost their seventh wicket in the 40th over and needed 88 off the final ten. They scored 43 in the next five overs but lost David Bernard. Denesh Ramdin and Sulieman Benn scored 20 off two overs, which meant West Indies needed 25 off 18 balls to take the series lead. It was when the two batsmen fell within four balls of each other that a win looked highly unlikely. Ashish Nehra, playing his comeback game, took the crucial wickets of Bernard and Ramdin. “It was a gamble. We were thinking of giving that over to an offspinner or a pacer. Finally we chose a pacer as the ball was getting reverse-swing,” Dhoni said.West Indies captain Chris Gayle said his team should have capitalised on the good start. “We came close and the effort can’t be faulted for the way we went about it,” Gayle said. “We batted well. Darren [Bravo] who was making debut was also impressive. Shiv [Chanderpaul] played a top innings at the top. I think if we had won the toss we would have batted first because it is a flat track and the wicket seemed a bit dry.”Both Dhoni and Gayle gave credit to Yuvraj for India’s victory. Dhoni said Yuvraj had matured as a batsman over the last two years. “We rely a lot on him. He gets big runs for us in the middle order,” Dhoni said. “Once he sets in, you hope for a big score. That’s what he’s doing. Once he’s set in, he always gives us a good score with a very good strike rate.”Gayle said once Yuvraj could be very dangerous once he was settled. “[Yuvraj] batted really well and set up a good innings for his team – on a small outfield and flat track it was difficult to contain him out there when he was on the go,” Gayle said. “You have to give credit to the way Yuvraj batted. He started really slow but that goes to show the power of Yuvraj.”The second ODI is on Sunday at the same venue.

Australian players jittery over IPL

Lee and Bracken want to play in IPL
  • Several members of the Australian Test squad in South Africa may be rethinking their involvement in the IPL after the terrorist strikes in Lahore, but fast bowlers Brett Lee and Nathan Bracken remain interested in playing the Twenty20 tournament.
  • Lee told the Australian newspaper, the , that he knew the security risks involved in visiting the subcontinent but “we can’t let this [terrorism] stop us going about what we do with our lives.”
  • Bracken, who missed the tournament’s first season as he was recovering from a knee surgery, had similar views on the incident. “It’s concerning that terrorism is impacting the sport. But I’ll still be going,” the paper quoted him as saying.
  • Former wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist, though, remained circumspect about participating in the tournament. “I’ll try to gather more detail and learn more about the situation [and] then assess it from there,” he told the .

Australia’s players are considering their involvement in the IPL thisyear following the attack on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore. Thecaptain Ricky Ponting had already decided not to play this season because of his Australian commitments but he said his team-mates wouldbe thinking about whether they wanted to travel to the region so soonafter the Lahore shootout and the Mumbai terrorist attack.”I think there would have been enough concerns from the guys anywayafter Mumbai,” Ponting said. “That was still pretty fresh ineveryone’s minds I think and this one on top again. I’m not going to the IPL, a decision that was made a few weeks ago. Some of the other guys that potentially could be going there will have all those thingsnow that they’ve got to think about as well, more so than they didbefore.”Australia were on Wednesday practising in Durban ahead of the secondTest against South Africa and Ponting said his men would be keptabreast of the security situation in Asia by the AustralianCricketers’ Association (ACA). Ponting said he was not aware of anyplayers who had already decided not to take part in the IPL because ofthe Lahore attack.”I’m sure once we get around the guys a bit more today that might evenbe something that comes up in our meeting this morning as well, seewhat the guys are thinking about there,” Ponting said. “[ACA chiefexecutive] Paul Marsh will keep the guys up to date with what’shappening as far as security is concerned in the IPL.”A more pressing concern for Australia is the one-day series they werescheduled to play against Pakistan in the United Arab Emiratesimmediately following the tour of South Africa. Cricket Australia iskeen to goahead with the series, while England has loomed as a possible venue for a Test series between Australia and Pakistan next year.”I’m not against playing in neutral venues,” Ponting said. “We’ve doneit in the past, we played [Tests against Pakistan] in Sri Lanka and Sharjah a few years ago now. There’s every possibility that neutral venues could come up.”The Lahore attack dominated discussions among Australia’s players onTuesday, when they had intended to refocus on the second Testfollowing their 162-run win in Johannesburg. The Australian teamphysio Alex Kountouris, who previously worked with the Sri Lanka side, had been in touch with the Sri Lanka players while the coach TimNielsen had spoken to his fellow South Australian, the umpire SteveDavis, who was travelling in a van behind the team bus when the attacktook place.”From having a good win and having a bit of a celebration and wakingup yesterday morning and seeing what was happening in our game on theother side of the world was very saddening for all of us,” Pontingsaid. “Alex has made contact with them yesterday and I told him lastnight to send a message on behalf of the players to the guys overthere that have been affected by it all.”Obviously what happened was well planned and they were made targets. It was the main discussion point around the whole group yesterday fromthe morning when we woke up until we went to bed last night. That’swhat everyone was talking about, what they were seeing on the newscoverage and what Alex was hearing coming back from their players.”Security has been increased for the South Africa and Australia teamsin the wake of the Lahore attack. The second Test begins at Kingsmeadon Friday.
