Everton: Pickford and Olsen may give Ancelotti a selection headache

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is set to be recalled to the England starting line-up for this evening’s UEFA Nations League clash against Belgium, as per Daily Mail.

The 26-year-old, often first choice for both club and country, sat out Thursday’s 3-0 friendly win over Wales but is expected to return between the sticks at Wembley today.

Pickford’s club colleague Robin Olsen, who joined the Toffees on loan last week, is also set to feature for his country as Sweden face a Nations League double header as their first-choice netminder – which could set up a duel between the two to be selected by Carlo Ancelotti for Saturday’s Merseyside derby against Liverpool.

The case for Pickford

Pickford is Ancelotti’s current first-choice goalkeeper, having started in every single Premier League game so far this season, as per Transfermarkt.

The 26-year old is arguably more comfortable on the ball than Olsen, as he averaged more accurate passes (18.7) per league game last season compared to the Sweden international’s 15.4 in the Serie A, and also averaged more touches of the ball (40.7) per match to Olsen’s 35.2.

Pickford has also averaged two saves a game in the Premier League so far this term, while Olsen has no previous experience of playing in the division.

The case for Olsen

However, the England goalkeeper is prone to mistakes, with his most recent blunder coming against Brighton last weekend, where luckily for him it did not prove costly as the Toffees ran out 4-2 winners in the end.

Pickford was not able to hold onto the ball and thus gifted the opportunity for Neal Maupay to tuck home an equaliser for Graham Potter’s team toward the end of the first half, which earned him a lot of stick from Everton supporters.

This is not the first time that the 26-year-old has made a mistake which has led to a goal in the Premier League either, as he was culpable for four errors leading to goals in the division last term, according to Sofascore.

Olsen is not as error-prone as Pickford, as the 30-year old made zero mistakes leading to goals while playing in Serie A in 2019/20.

International displays may play a part in Pickford/Olsen decision

Pickford faces Belgium at home and Olsen plays Croatia away in the UEFA Nations League today before England are at home to Denmark and Sweden travel to Portugal in midweek.

Both players may be fighting for a starting spot in the derby as the look to impress for their respective national sides.

Matchroom Stadium

Key information about Matchroom Stadium

Matchroom Stadium was built in 1937 and is now the home of Leyton Orient, a League Two outfit. The ground is located in Brisbane Road in Leyton, a district of London, and has been housing its current tenant ever since it was erected.

Its current maximum capacity is 9,271 and it has a pitch that measures 101m by 73m. The surface is covered with natural grass and there is of course no running track surrounding it as it’s primarily used for football.

The record attendance at Matchroom Stadium was set in 1964 when 34,345 people watched Leyton Orient’s FA Cup clash against West Ham United.

A history of Matchroom Stadium

Matchroom Stadium was built way back in 1937 but has also had numerous different names throughout the years. When it was first constructed, the ground was known as Osborne Road, but would also be called Brisbane Road, because it’s located in the street that shared its name, The Breyer Group Stadium, the Leyton Stadium and of course, Matchroom Stadium.

Before Leyton Orient moved there from their former home, the Lea Bridge stadium, the ground was actually housing an amateur side Leyton FC, who then subsequently moved to the Hare and Hounds ground.

Initially, however, it was a rather modest stadium that consisted of nothing more than a small seater stand and cinder banking on the remaining three sides. Still, Matchroom Stadium has seen multiple redevelopments over the years, starting with the post-war era when the grass bank was levelled and a crash barrier installed in 1949. The terracing was improved a couple of times in the years following that and in 1956, the club also installed a new stand that was brought in from the Mitcham Stadium.

Since around that time Leyton Orient also got promoted into the First Division, more improvements followed and the interest was on the rise. The club soon recorded its highest ever attendance in 1964 when 34,345 fans watched them duke it out against West Ham United in the FA Cup.

In 1978, the Matchroom Stadium’s West Stand got converted into an all-seater but that would be one of the last changes to the ground until the 1990s arrived. In 1996, the club demolished the southern end terrace but it wouldn’t be until 1999 that they finally replaced it with a new South Stand, to be renamed as the Tommy Johnston stand in 2008.

Three years prior to that, in 2005, they also erected the West Stand and moved the club offices and facilities there from the old main stand. In 2007, a new North Stand was built as well. That was also the year when Tottenham Hotspur reserves also moved into the stadium.

The ground’s name, Matchroom Stadium, stemmed from Leyton Orient’s former chairman Barry Hearn’s sports promotion company, Matchroom Sport, and prior to that, it was actually just called Leyton Stadium. Currently, it is known as the Breyer Group Stadium for sponsorship reasons, although the fans still like to call it Brisbane Road after the street it runs alongside of.

Tickets to watch Leyton Orient at Matchroom Stadium

All tickets to watch Leyton Orient play at Matchroom Stadium can be found on the club’s official website. The prices will vary depending on the age group of the buyer and the location in the stands but the cheapest adult ticket costs £18.

The club also offers a season card scheme for the most loyal fans with the early bird prices for adults starting at £189.

Manchester United: Fans can’t wait for Spurs clash after club’s Instagram post

Manchester United have got their fans excited for the Premier League to return after a recent Instagram post.

The club has posted several photos of the first team in action on the training ground, including snaps of Paul Pogba and the now fit-and-firing Marcus Rashford.

/CBObQ_iAMA0/

Before the league was brought to a halt back in March, United had managed to regain some ground in the table. After some tough losses and draws earlier in the season, the Reds began to reassert their dominance and they will be looking to pick up where they left off.

Their last Premier League match was a 2-0 win over rivals Manchester City, which saw them claim fifth place on 45 points. United are just three adrift of the Champions League qualification zone, which is very much in their grasp if they can kick on as they did before the break.

Many fans have responded to the club’s Instagram post and are thrilled to see the players in action ahead of the return. Red Devils supporters will no doubt be hoping to see Rashford return to scoring ways as they prepare to face off against Tottenham in their first game back on Friday week.

Manchester City: Fans baffled by potential transfer exchange involving Joao Cancelo

Plenty of Manchester City fans have reacted with bewilderment to a transfer report from Italy which involves Joao Cancelo.

According to Corriere dello Sport, the Portugal defender is part of a reported three-pronged transfer exchange between City, Inter and Barcelona which would see him moving to Serie A, Lautaro Martinez joining the La Liga side and Nelson Semedo coming to the Etihad Stadium. News of the complex transfer arrangement was shared by @City_Xtra on Twitter.

Cancelo only came to England last summer as part of an exchange deal which saw ex-Manchester City defender Danilo take his place at Juventus but the 25-year-old has started only eight Premier League games this season, with Pep Guardiola often preferring to start with Kyle Walker at right-back.

Spanish media outlet Sport had claimed [via Sport Witness] that Guardiola has been eyeing up a possible move for Semedo, who has featured in 29 games for Barcelona in the current campaign.

These Manchester City fans on Twitter seemed rather baffled and mystified upon reading the transfer report from Corriere dello Sport:

Man City fans, should the club give Cancelo more of a chance and would he be preferable to Semedo? Have your say by commenting below!

Tottenham Hotspur fans react to update on Giovani Lo Celso

Tottenham Hotspur snatched away Real Betis’ gem Giovani Lo Celso in the summer and the young midfielder has arrived on a year-long deal with an option to buy upon the expiry of the spell.

And on Tuesday, his parent club’s president, Angel Haro, revealed that he believes Spurs will make his transfer permanent in January already because in the summer, the 23-year-old midfielder would cost them even more.

Here’s what he said in full, as per Estadio Deportivo (quoted by Daily Mail):

“Yes they will exercise (the option) because they are not taxed as much as if they have to exercise it in June, when the purchase becomes mandatory.

“They may also have to exercise the mandatory [clause]. We understand that they will exercise it, but if not [we will be] delighted with the player [returning].”

Upon seeing his words, many Spurs fans were actually pretty happy with that verdict, saying that Lo Celso could still turn into a good player for them.

But there are also some fans that don’t really seem convinced, while some are also not sure whether Jose Mourinho will be keen on getting this deal over the line.

No clues whatsoever: Which seasons do these iconic Spurs images belong to?

So far, Lo Celso has only tallied 322 minutes across 11 games in all competitions and still doesn’t have a clear spot in the team. For that reason, some of the supporters even questioned the point of signing him permanently and don’t really see the Argentine thriving at Spurs.

Of course, with such low game time, the 23-year-old midfielder has never really got the chance to shine and show his worth.

We’ll have to wait and see what Mourinho thinks of the whole situation.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid and Liverpool might go head to head for a player that fits both of their ideologies…

Everton fans criticise Marco Silva’s double change against Norwich

A number of Everton fans have criticised head coach Marco Silva for a decision that the Portuguese made during Saturday’s Premier League game against Norwich City.

Indeed, with the Toffees trailing 1-0 in the 65th minute of the contest, Silva introduced Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Seamus Coleman in place of Theo Walcott and Djibril Sidibe in a bid to turn the tide.

As it transpired, the Merseyside giants could not find a goal and actually conceded a second in stoppage time to make it a miserable afternoon.

The decision to introduce Calvert-Lewin and Coleman did not go down well with the Everton supporters, with some finding it difficult to understand why Silva decided to replace a right-back with a right-back at a key stage of the match.

According to The Telegraph, Silva will be given more time to turn things around at the club, although David Moyes is said to be waiting in the wings.

Southampton fans discuss Harrison Reed and the club’s use of academy graduate

Southampton fans have taken to Twitter to discuss Harrison Reed and the club’s use of him.

At 24 years of age now, the academy graduate has made just 30 appearances for the Southampton first-team amid a number of spells away from St Mary’s on loan – he has never really nailed down a place in the starting XI on the south coast.

Reed has spent time with Norwich and Blackburn in the past, and is currently on a season-long loan with Fulham where he has made 12 Championship appearances so far.

Interestingly, Reed is a versatile figure who can play in central midfield, defensive midfield or on the right flank, which would allow him to play in at least two positions in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s preferred 4-2-2-2 formation.

One fan below thinks that Reed could also provide cover at full-back – something that Hasenhuttl may need having started Stuart Armstrong at right wing-back last time out – whereas another supporter said that they would “have him back and playing tomorrow”.

Let’s take a look at some more of the Twitter reaction…

Sheffield Wednesday can only benefit from Barry Bannan’s Scotland snub

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Sheffield Wednesday will be looking to refresh and regroup over the next week or so before they embark on the tough test of facing a trip to the league leaders after the international break.

The Owls currently sit in eighth place, three points behind a playoff berth, and eight points behind West Bromwich Albion at the Championship’s summit.

Garry Monk has been faced with a rough patch of matches in recent weeks as his side have thrown away potential points in three of their last five games.

Most recently, Swansea City pegged the south Yorkshiremen back in injury time despite the home side thinking they had won it with Morgan Fox’s strike just minutes earlier.

Blackburn Rovers were able to come from behind to defeat the Owls at Ewood Park in the game before, so game management is clearly something that needs to be worked on.

That process will be now made all that easier as Barry Bannan will be around at Hillsborough, rather than lining up for Scotland against Cyprus and Kazakhstan in their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign.

The 29-year-old was snubbed by national team manager Steve Clarke again, but Bannan doesn’t seem too fazed by it.

He said: “I shouldn’t be saying this, but I am probably quite happy not to be in, as I have a lot of niggles at the moment. I have never ruled it out and if I get picked, I get picked. If I don’t, I am happy playing for my club every week.”

Bannan recently was a shock omission from that Blackburn defeat, and his missing presence as vice-captain was clearly felt.

As such an influential member of the squad – he ranks joint-top for assists and top for key passes per game, via WhoScored – his presence on the training pitch over the next week will be a substantial help to Wednesday getting over their late blips in matches.

It also gives him a chance to fully recover from those little injuries he mentions, and a fully-fit Bannan is the best thing for Monk right now.

He has featured in 14 of their 16 matches in the second-tier this season.

The 27-time capped international hasn’t lined up in the blue kit of Scotland for two years now, so it remains to be seen if he will ever earn such a chance ever again.
