Everton Transfer Roundup: No plans to sign Costa, Mirallas could leave, Delph interest

[ad_pod ]

Friday’s Everton transfer roundup was comprised of Russian interest in a Nigerian winger, a first professional contract for a youngster and an update on a Serie A defender. Today’s edition includes news on a former Chelsea striker, the potential departure of a Belgian international and a rumoured bid for an England midfielder.

Everton do not want Costa

According to The Liverpool Echo, Everton do not plan on signing Atletico Madrid’s Diego Costa this summer. The Daily Mail had reported that Toffees owner Farhad Moshiri had ordered the Goodison Park outfit to bring in the Spanish international, but The Echo has poured cold water on that claim.

Mirallas heading for Standard

Kevin Mirallas could soon join Standard Liège according to Voetbal24. The 31-year-old forward spent last season on loan with Italian side Fiorentina and scored three goals in 30 appearances in all competitions for La Viola.

Toffees eye Delph

The Sun is reporting that Marco Silva and co are looking to sign Manchester City’s Fabian Delph this summer. The 29-year-old former Aston Villa star, who lifted the Premier League title last season, could reportedly be available for £16m as he looks to boost his England hopes.

Arsenal fans react as progress is made on a move for Celtic’s Kieran Tierney

[ad_pod ]

Lots of Arsenal fans have taken to Twitter to react after it was reported by the BBC’s David Ornstein that a £15m bid for Celtic’s Kieran Tierney had been rejected, but the Gunners are ‘optimistic’ over a deal being struck.

The report also states that agreeing personal terms with the Scottish international shouldn’t be a problem, although the actual fee involved is clearly proving to be a stumbling block.

From 6-0 FA Cup final maulings to Mkhitaryan missing the the Europa League final, is football broken? Fans discuss in the video below…

Tierney is an exciting left-back who could be likened to Andy Robertson based on their style of play and Scottish origins – the Celtic hero scored once and set up six goals last term as the Bhoys won another treble.

He only featured sporadically in 2019 due to a hernia operation, but that doesn’t appear to have put Arsenal off from signing him.

If the 5 ft 10 full-back did arrive, he would be a welcome addition to an area that the north Londoners are struggling in right now.

Unai Emery seemingly doesn’t trust Kolasinac as a conventional No.3, having utilised him 21 times as a wing-back instead in the Premier League and Europe last season, while Nacho Monreal will be 34 by the end of next term.

Let’s see what the Arsenal fans on Twitter have been saying about Tierney…

Leeds fans don’t want Woods to replace Phillips

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United fans on Twitter have made it clear that they don’t want the club to sign Ryan Woods if he is joining to replace Kalvin Phillips.

Many users on the social media platform were full of praise for the Stoke City midfielder’s ability, but they weren’t too keen on the idea of him replacing their star man, who has been offered a new contract according to Phil Hay.

Reputable journalist Alan Nixon stated on Sunday that the Whites are keeping tabs on the former Brentford man in case Aston Villa sign their 23-year-old however.

Phillips has been linked with an exit all summer long with Norwich, Bournemouth and Villa all linked. The Midlands club seem to be the most likely to secure his signature at this point though.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for both Phillips and Woods, but if the Whites line up with the 25-year-old in place of their current holding midfielder then fans won’t be happy.

I always rated Woods. Think he is a quality player but please, not at the expense of our Kalv. Why not just have both…? #lufc

Arsenal fans react to reports of latest Donnarumma links

[ad_pod ]With the transfer window seemingly on hold for Arsenal until their Europa League final against Chelsea in Baku is concluded, rumours will continue to pop up here and there. The latest has come completely from left field, with AC Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma linked with a move to North London.According to Tuttomercatoweb the Gunners are looking to sign the Italian who’s been a regular at the club since the age of 16. He’s gone on to emerge as one of the hottest prospects in world football.Arsenal have had issues with goalkeepers for many years, but the latest rumour does seem completely false, with 2018 summer sign Bernd Leno impressing between the posts since his arrival and Emi Martinez due to return from a successful loan spell at Reading.Since the German goalkeeper arrived from Bayer Leverkusen, he’s looked a brilliant shot-stopper with the odd mistake coming from set pieces, but all-in-all he’s been a terrific addition to the Arsenal squad.Links to Donnarumma therefore make little-to-no sense as the Italian would surely demand a starting place in the team and Leno doesn’t look like getting dropped any time soon. Arsenal fans quickly jumped on the rumour, and rightly haven’t believed a word of it…

Celtic: This youngster could give Karamoko Dembele a run for his money as Hoops’ golden Bhoy

We all know how Karamoko Dembele has had Parkhead roaring when he’s played. The youngster is undoubtedly the Hoops’ golden boy and star for the future, but what if the club had two of him? That could well happen if these links from The Scottish Sun are correct, as Neil Lennon is apparently interested in signing Bolton’s Luca Connell.

You will all be sceptical of this one, and rightly so. Connell may be two years senior to Dembele and recently suffered relegation with Bolton Wanderers, dropping into League One after a dire Championship season, but he is a class act. The one shining light for the Trotters in an abysmal season has been the 18-year-old, and he has all the makings of a midfielder who can rival Dembele.

According to the article, should Connell, who is still a third-year scholar at Bolton, make the move north to Glasgow this summer then it would require Celtic to beat off competition from Rangers, Wolves and Norwich. That’s a tough ask, but it may not be an expensive one, as if Connell was to leave England the cross-border tribunal fees are much lower than what would be if he’s to swap for another English club.

Whatever happens, we’re all pretty confident that Luca Connell will be a massive name in football before too long. Whether he can match the heights that Karamoko Dembele is guaranteed to hit is yet to be seen, but just to be on the safe side, surely it would be a whole lot better for the Bhoys if they were to have both of the electric youngsters on their books?

Would you like to sign Luca Connell this summer, Celtic fans? Comment below and let us know!

Summer swoop? Tottenham fans react as Jack Clarke price is revealed

[ad_pod ]

According to The Mirror, Leeds United have informed Tottenham Hotspur that they will have to come up with a bid of £20m in order to sign Jack Clarke.

Clarke, 18, was named Leeds’ Young Player of the Season after making 25 appearances in all competitions for the club during the 2018-19 campaign.

A versatile winger, the teenager netted twice in the Championship last term and is viewed as one of the best talents outside of the Premier League.

According to The Mirror, Leeds would sell to Tottenham this summer but the top-flight outfit have been quoted £20m, and a number of Spurs fans have been on social media offering their views.

The indoor football skills in the video below have to be seen to be believed…

Whilst plenty would like to have Clarke at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next season, others are not so keen on the idea of a swoop, due mainly to what is a huge price tag for someone with so little senior experience.

A selection of the Twitter reaction in relation to a potential move for the York-born attacker can be seen below:

The Chalkboard: Emery’s varying formations are trying to fix one thing

[ad_pod ]

Unai Emery has been praised for his ability to prepare tactically for the opposition, for adapting in games to poor performances and for being flexible in the way his Arsenal side have played. However, constant change isn’t what Emery will be striving for, and there’s a reason for his relentless switch-up of formations in games.

The Chalkboard

Emery started the season at home to Manchester City with his side playing a back four (4-2-3-1 formation) and insisted in that game that his side play out from the back with goal-kicks.

In this game, his first ever in the Premier League, he immediately forced his philosophy on the players, and what’s telling is that he adopted the back four in doing so. In his first ‘big test’ since August, against Liverpool, he once again lined up with a back four.

The use of the three-at-the-back system didn’t actually become an option till the end of November, but now fans and pundits will do well to remember a time when Arsenal didn’t line up with some sort of variation of a 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 formation.

Arsenal reverted back to a 4-2-3-1 formation for the midweek game against Wolves, but found themselves battered by half-time. So the question is, what is Emery’s preferred formation and what’s he trying to achieve?

All about width

The only consistency in Emery’s approach to games is in his desire to attack the flanks, whoever he faces. He’s often deployed the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Henrick Mkhitaryan and Alex Iwobi out on the wing in an attempt to make the pitch as big as possible and have his most dangerous players in acres of space when attacking.

This was even more evident by the advanced positions players like Hector Bellerin and Sead Kolasinac would find themselves in to provide the overlapping option. Full-backs being used in this way isn’t particularly innovative, but the Arsenal right and left-backs were getting into very dangerous positions on a far more regular basis than we’d become used to seeing.

Emery’s clearly proving he wants to focus his football down the right and left, but what’s more telling than just his choices of formation and system is his desperate desire to sign a winger in the summer and winter transfer window. In January, Arsenal reportedly missed out on signing several wingers, and Emery continued with 3-4-3.

This formation along with 3-5-2 has allowed Emery to get the best out of his biggest threats from wide areas, surprisingly Sead Kolasinac and Ainsley Maitland-Niles. Hector Bellerin was also brilliant before his injury.

The issue for Emery is that the wide options he’s inherited at the club simply aren’t good enough to have the desired effect, and so he’s adapting by fielding an extra centre-back and allowing the far more dangerous wing-backs to get further forward. Alex Iwobi and Henrikh Mhkitaryan’s lack of end product from these areas are forcing Emery into changes to his system he doesn’t feel comfortable making.

Long-term, fans should be confident that Emery will take a more consistent approach, though that won’t come until he’s found out which players he can and can’t trust. His persistence with Iwobi suggests he is desperately trying to find a player of real quality within him, but it simply isn’t coming as the Nigerian’s form continues to be patchy and uninspiring.

Emery is having to sacrifice some of his own principles just to get the wing-backs higher up the pitch and without leaving his defence exposed. Whilst the formation is challenged by many fans, the three-at-the-back system he deploys will one day be looked back on as a teething problem that Arsenal had to come through under the Spaniard before he found the players he needed to embrace the use of traditional wingers once again.

Liverpool should look to make their move for impressive midfield despite Arsenal interest: Opinion

Both Liverpool and Arsenal will be looking for good summers in the transfer market as they seek to build on this season.

While Liverpool are hoping to land the Premier League title, Arsenal are simply hoping to cement a place in the top four following a decent first season under new manager Unai Emery.

Arsenal are in desperate need of landing a few new players, and this week has seen them linked with a move for PSG midfielder Christopher Nkunku, who has come into his own somewhat this term.

However, Nkunku is deemed surplus to requirements by the French giants if they can receive the right sort of bid, and despite interest from Arsenal, we here in the Tavern feel that Liverpool should make their own move and try and sign the young midfielder.

Nkunku is all action and is someone who could slot in nicely into the set up at Anfield under Jurgen Klopp, adding energy and drive to a midfield which can at times lack that little bit of spark from the middle.

Even if Liverpool do win the league, then there is a need for Klopp to move and strengthen his squad, and Nkunku would be a solid signing for both now and the future.

While Arsenal will of course want to snap the 21-year-old up and make him a Gunner, he’d be ideal for Liverpool as they look to continue their success and build towards winning trophies in the coming seasons.

Pundit View: Matteo tips Liverpool to swoop for Bale

[ad_pod ]

Former Liverpool player Dominic Matteo has called for what would be the signing of the summer from the Reds – Gareth Bale.

It’s beginning to look increasingly likely that Bale will leave Madrid this summer, as the Welsh international is constantly linked with a move back to the Premier League.

The 29 year-old’s agent recently called the treatment he gets from Real Madrid fans a “disgrace”, per the BBC.

And while Spurs and Manchester United are the two teams most strongly linked with his signature, Matteo, who played for the Reds between 1992 and 2000, thinks Anfield would be an appropriate landing spot.

What did he say?

“It would be a big signing. If he was coming back to England, I’m sure that everyone would take him,” Matteo said on Stadium Astro’s Youtube channel.

“With Bale, when Madrid beat Liverpool in the final, he had that bit of X factor. Liverpool could maybe do with one more X factor player to score in the finals.

“That’s what we’ve lacked that bit of X factor to get us over the line.”

Stick or twist?

In fairness to Matteo, he is not wrong about Liverpool missing an “X factor”. As soon as Mohamed Salah went off in Kiev, the Reds looked totally devoid of any superstar power, the type of superstar power that Bale displayed on that very night to be specific.

Looking at the bigger picture though, where would Bale fit at Anfield? The Salah at striker experiment didn’t really work, meaning the Egyptian will keep his place on the right wing, and Roberto Firmino is crucial to the way Jurgen Klopp sets his team up.

That just leaves Sadio Mane, who has been strongly linked with a move to Real Madrid, with former Southampton teammate Oriol Romeu even saying the Senegalese international is ”ready” to go to the Bernabeu.

Given that Zinedine Zidane is clearly a huge fan of Mane, swooping for Bale will only mean one thing – Los Blancos returning with a bid of their own for Mane, perhaps even one that is too good to be rejected.

The Reds basically have the option here to stick or twist, and fans would surely rather stick with the red-hot Mane over a misfiring Bale.
