Back to action: Liverpool fans discuss Dejan Lovren’s return to training

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to react after Dejan Lovren returned to training, having been out for over two months with a hamstring issue.

The Croatian international – a runner up at the World Cup – has endured a stuttering campaign so far for the Reds, making just 12 appearances in total as he has struggled for fitness and form.

Jurgen Klopp has gotten quite inventive with his excuses this season. FFC’s James Jones think he has no one but himself to blame for Liverpol’s poor form in the video below…

Despite his return to training, Lovren will find game-time hard to come by given the form of Joel Matip and Virgil van Dijk in his absence.

The duo have combined to keep four successive clean sheets from their last four Premier League appearances for Liverpool, proving to be a rock-solid pairing who can at least keep the opposition at bay despite the Reds’ struggles to score at the other end.

Lovren’s fortunes are set to worsen as Jurgen Klopp expects to have Joe Gomez fit by the end of the month, so the 29-year-old former Southampton man could find himself as the fourth choice centre-back at Anfield.

But when James Pearce announced on Twitter that Lovren could make the bench on Sunday, the response from Liverpool fans was surprisingly negative…

Glasgow Rangers: Ryan Babel says he would move to Ibrox with Steven Gerrard in charge

Ryan Babel has said in a Q&A that he would play for Glasgow Rangers with Steven Gerrard as manager.

The Netherlands international is something of a journeyman at this point in his career, having played for no fewer than nine clubs, but he has still had plenty of distinguished moments in football. He has won nine trophies – including three league titles – during his career at club level, appearing for sides such as Liverpool, Galatasaray, Ajax and Besiktas, whilst he also has 63 caps for his country – he went to the 2010 World Cup, in which the Oranje made the final, although he didn’t actually play in that tournament (as per Transfermarkt).

On Sport Bible’s Instagram page, he took part in a Q&A, allowing fans to ask him a series of questions. One of those was, if he were to make the move to Scotland, which club would he join, to which he replied: “I think I would play for Rangers just for the fact that Steven Gerrard is the coach.”

It would be some coup for the ‘Gers if Babel were to make the move to Ibrox. Whilst he may now be 33, he is a player with a huge wealth of experience that his former Liverpool team-mate could put to good use. Only two years ago, he scored 13 goals and provided six assists in just 32 matches for Besiktas, whilst he has scored 117 goals in his career, according to Transfermarkt. If he could produce that sort of form for the Glasgow side, then he would be a coup for Gerrard.

‘Gers fans, do you believe Babel could be a good signing if the club were to pursue him? Let us know what you think by commenting below!

Barcelona’s Carles Perez will respond to Roma interest today

According to Mundo Deportivo, Carles Perez will today inform Barcelona if he wants to join AS Roma.

What’s the word, then?

The clubs have already agreed on a transfer worth around €15m (£12.6m) and the player is set to either approve or decline the move on Monday. His other suitors include Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, Sevilla and Atalanta.

Idiots Abroad: Do you know where these famous Brits are playing now?

It’s claimed Perez wants to join a club that will challenge in European football, but he doesn’t want a repurchase clause to be included in the deal – meaning Barcelona won’t have the option to buy him back on the cheap.

Verdict

It’s always a shame when a La Masia prospect ends up leaving the Blaugrana and this transfer does seem like a big surprise considering that Perez was supposed to play a big role in their campaign.

After all, he was quickly moved up from Barcelona B and even tallied three starts in the first five games, scoring a goal and assisting further two in the process.

Back then, it seemed like he would have a future at the club but now, suddenly, the 21-year-old is close to departing for Italy.

The injuries of Luis Suarez and Ousmane Dembele put this deal under a question mark even more – Barcelona seem rather thin across the forward line and lacking any real squad depth.

It remains to be seen, however, if they regret letting Perez go.

In other news, there will be one clear winner and one clear loser if Arsenal really allow their star to leave for Barcelona this January…

Revealed: 89% of polled Newcastle fans want the club to sign Liverpool flop Alberto Moreno

After Liverpool left-back Alberto Moreno came out and spoke to the media about his unhappiness on Merseyside as well as playing under Jurgen Klopp, his time at Anfield looks to be coming to an end.

The Spaniard has lost his place in the side to the outstanding Andrew Robertson and looks to have no chance of winning it back – even right-back Nathaniel Clyne came on against Arsenal at left-back instead of the 26-year-old outcast.

This situation, coupled with the fact that Newcastle have just one left-back in their squad in Paul Dummett, looks to be an ideal scenario for Rafa Benitez and Mike Ashley to swoop in and save Moreno from his Anfield nightmare.

We asked Magpies fans if they’d like to see the former Sevilla full-back arrive at St James Park to improve their depth on the left side of defence.

As shown by the results below, a huge 89% of those who voted said they do want to see Moreno on Tyneside…

Romelu Lukaku crumbles with the weight of Old Trafford on his shoulders

The pressure upon Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho became even more intense on Tuesday night when his side slumped to a pathetic 0-0 draw against Valencia in a Champions League group stage game at Old Trafford.

Whilst the divisive Portuguese boss certainly deserves his fair share of the blame for United’s rotten recent form, questions must now be asked of the players’ own commitment and performance levels.

None of the Red Devils’ many big stars were able to shine against Valencia and the home side were booed off by their own fans after the final whilst brought an end to another drab display.

Mourinho’s defensive tactics are notorious. However, with the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Romelu Lukaku, Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford all in the starting XI, United still ought to have mustered far more than the meagre four shots on target they in fact managed.

Two of those shots on target came courtesy of Lukaku. That isn’t to say that the Belgium international was United’s standout performer. The 6’3” forward had a night to forget against Los Che.

Having spent an initial £75 million to sign Lukaku from Everton in 2017, the 25-year-old took on the burden of being United’s main goal threat. On nights like Tuesday, when the Red Devils are failing to click, they’ll be reliant upon their big No. 9 to make the difference. Against Valencia, Lukaku was found wanting.

Despite his two shots on goal – from only four shots attempted – Lukaku was a peripheral figure in the match, and when he was called into action he failed to deliver when his side needed it most.

Lukaku managed just 33 touches against Valencia. Only David De Gea, of the United starters, touched the ball less. Considering the away side mustered just the single shot on target, the Spanish ‘keeper’s lack of involvement is understandable and even a positive sign. In Lukaku’s case, however, it is merely evidence of his isolation on the park.

Cut adrift from his teammates, the 77-cap man was far too easy to mark out of the game. When he did have opportunities to involve himself in the match though, his hold up play repeatedly let him down.

In the match, Lukaku won just the one aerial duel. Across last season’s Champions League campaign, in contrast, he averaged 4.5 aerial duels won per match. Valencia were also able to dispossess Lukaku on three occasions, and he performed three unsuccessful touches.

When Lukaku was able to bring the ball under control, he was ineffective with it. He completed 16 passes over the course of the 90 minutes – at a respectable pass accuracy rating of 87.5% – but was not able to register a single key pass. On top that, he was only able to complete one dribble.

The most memorable moment of the match for Lukaku (for all the wrong reasons) was the instance when, attempting a step over, the forward contrived to stumble on the ball and kick it back behind himself.

Lukaku was possibly not the worst player on the pitch for United against Valencia – he was scarcely involved enough to claim that dubious honour – but considering his status at the club, United need him to produce on the biggest stage and on Tuesday night he failed.

Wolves must swoop in for Mario now West Ham have spent big on Anderson instead

Wolverhampton Wanderers want to boost their squad ahead of their return to the Premier League with the acquisition of Portuguese international Joao Mario, but are yet to make a formal bid, according to Gazzetta Dello Sport, via Sport Witness.

What’s the story, then?

The report says that Wolves are keen to take the man who spent the second half of last season on loan at West Ham to Molineux and are using Jorge Mendes as a conduit.

They say that Mendes does not represent the player but that he has probed the possibility of doing a deal and the signs are so good that an agreement may be reached in the coming days.

However, they claim that a formal bid has not yet been launched, although Inter are braced for an approach.

Wolves’ dallying is a mystery

Wolves have been so decisive in the transfer market since their big-money takeover and Mendes’ involvement has been at the heart of that strong strategy.

Therefore, if his initial approach has shown that the signs are good and with West Ham otherwise engaged with the purchase of Felipe Anderson, the delay is something of a surprise.

Inter are notorious for driving a hard bargain on the selling side, so getting negotiations started sooner rather than later would be beneficial for Wolves.

Carragher, Neville involved in another Twitter spat

The rivalry between Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville has spanned decades, and it continues off the pitch now even though the pair work together as pundits for Sky Sports. The fact that they played for arch enemies Liverpool and Manchester United respectively means that they will never be best friends, but the clashes between them are slightly more light-hearted.Over the weekend, Carragher labelled Neville a “fraud†after a conversation about Twitter profile pictures deviated from its original subject. The former Liverpool defender asked his social media following to give examples of what image he should change his avatar to, and of course, Neville came up with a suggestion. The ex-United captain posted a picture of Carragher looking dejected on the pitch while playing for the Reds, and the TV pundit hit back with an image of actor Robert Knepper, who plays Theodore ’T-Bag’ Bagwell from TV series Prison Break.

Neville did not take it lying down, as he rubbed his trophy success in Carragher’s face by posting a picture of himself back in his United days with his silverware haul listed.

His colleague responded by describing him as a “fraudâ€.

Liverpool-linked Carvalho’s numbers suggest he’s address midfield issue

Liverpool’s midfield has been the subject of much debate lately. Although a lack of potency in the final third and some shaky showings at the back have bagged the headlines, it may actually be the shift in the middle of the park that’s responsible for Jurgen Klopp’s side going off the boil.

Indeed, the Reds have moved Adam Lallana into the front three to compensate for Sadio Mane’s Africa Cup of Nations absence, while Jordan Henderson has been battling a heel issue, which has decreased his level of performance. As a result of this, the trio of a not fully fit skipper, Emre Can and Georginio Wijnaldum have been struggling to do the business, so perhaps an addition is needed to kick Liverpool’s title challenge back into gear.

[ad_pod id=’now-tv’ align=’centre’]

And links have surfaced from Portugal via A Bola (below), suggesting that William Carvalho is a €30m (£25.8m) target for the Merseysiders, who have been in early talks to sign him.

Although the legitimacy of this rumour is not yet fully known, the EURO 2016-winner could provide the sort of solid base Klopp’s midfield has been missing…

The Portugal international has been in decent form for Sporting CP this term, averaging 88% pass completion across 18 Primeira Liga outings, while creating eight chances. However, it’s his contributions in the other direction that are most intriguing, with 31 interceptions a fine return, while his 24 aerial duels won is greater than Henderson’s 21 – the Englishman has played more league games, too. Interestingly, Carvalho’s quality in the air means he’s won almost 70% of his battles off the turf.

Liverpool have a decent relationship with Sporting after sending Lazar Markovic, who has now moved to Hull, to Lisbon on loan earlier this season.

Fantasy Football Differentials: Tottenham star to outdo Kane this weekend?

After looking at the rather mainstream players that could perform well this weekend in the Captain choices article, we will now do our weekly run of Fantasy Premier League assets that could be overlooked by managers heading into Gameweek 16.

Last week we saw why the English top flight is one of the most fun leagues (except when watching Manchester United lately) in world football, with several shock scores like Stoke City’s 2-0 win over Manchester City and Liverpool’s defeat to a struggling Newcastle United outfit.

Chelsea also managed to lose another home game this time to Bournemouth, but that result isn’t too much of a surprise given the Blues’ extremely poor form.

Players such as Stoke’s Marko Arnautovic have been performing well under the radar for some time now and previously featured in an earlier differential article, and proved his worth with two goals against champions-elect Man City last weekend.

Are there any others that could rack in the points and soar in value?

Here are THREE Fantasy Premier League DIFFERENTIALS heading into Gameweek 16.

Leighton Baines

Having scored over 120 points in the Fantasy Premier League the past seven seasons, Leighton Baines (6.1) has been a premium defender for quite some time, but only managed to play his first game of the campaign last weekend against Crystal Palace after recovering from injury.

Owned by just 2.5%, Baines could prove to be a healthy differential in their run of enticing fixtures which include Norwich (Away), Leicester (Home), Newcastle (Away), and Stoke (Home) in their next four.

Baines is the Toffees’ main free-kick and penalty taker, so the England international has the opportunity to rack ups points on both ends of the pitch.

Erik Lamela

Only a few months ago, Erik Lamela (6.8 and owned by just 0.9%) was considered one of the biggest flops in Tottenham Hotspurs’ history. But after a fine start to the season, he is starting to become the player they paid £26million for.

The Argentina winger was injured the past few games but came back with a bang by scoring a hattrick against Monaco on Thursday, which will greatly boost his confidence for their clash against Newcastle United.

Harry Kane may be many managers’ pick as captain, but Lamela could very well continue his goalscoring form and be a worthy differential.

David Silva

Yes Manchester City star David Silva (10.0) is a differential option, sitting in just 5.7% of teams after struggling with an injury since Gameweek 8.

Silva returned to first team action last weekend but didn’t have the best outings losing 2-0 to Stoke City, however scored a brilliant goal against Borussia Monchengladbach in midweek to ensure City fans of his ability.

And with Sergio Aguero out and Kevin de Bruyne becoming fatigued, Silva could refind his form and become’s City’s creative spark when they host a manager-less Swansea at the Etihad on Saturday.

He is also our captain choice out of several City options.

January 19 will see the Herons return to the pitch for the first time in 2024, with Messi and co. taking on Los Cuscatlecos. The match will be played on the road in San Salvador at the Estadio Cuscatlán, one day before the USMNT take on Slovenia in Texas in an international friendly. With the match being played one day before the USMNT take the pitch, both Gregg Berhalter and Tata Martino will have to make a decision on where Benjamin Cremaschi and Deandre Yedlin go. The young attacker made his international debut in a friendly in September against Oman, but is not yet cap-tied due to not competing in an official competitive match. Yedlin, meanwhile, has been on the outskirts of the program of late, but could feature in January due to it not being an official FIFA window.

WHAT INTER MIAMI SAID

“We’re excited to start announcing our preseason plans and preparations ahead of a thrilling 2024 campaign. We look forward to facing the El Salvador national team in what will be a good first test for our squad against the best players from the country,” said Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director Chris Henderson.
