Ex-West Ham United striker hits out at club’s poor recruitment

Former West Ham United striker Dean Ashton has blamed the club’s transfer business for the mess that the club find themselves in.

Slaven Bilic’s side were hoping to build on last season’s seventh-place finish when they moved into the London Stadium in the summer.

It has not gone to plan, though, as the team have only won nine of their 31 Premier League games, losing 16 and drawing six.

A 3-0 defeat to Arsenal on Wednesday night extended the club’s losing run to five consecutive matches, which has worryingly dropped them into a relegation fight.

The East London outfit currently reside five points above the bottom three with seven games left to play.

While speaking to talkSPORT, Ashton claimed that the club’s recruitment policy let them down this season because they did not target the right kind of players.

Across the summer and January windows, West Ham did business for 13 players, bringing in the likes of Andre Ayew, Arthur Masuaku, Edimilson Fernandes, Simon Zaza, Jose Fonte and Robert Snodgrass.

Ashton believes that the damage was already done in the summer. He told talkSPORT:

“The recruitment hasn’t been good enough – it is as simple as that. They have brought in players for the Europa League. They were thinking they were going to be in Europe so they brought in players that would supplement the squad who had played European football.

“When they crashed out they had to play these players because of injuries. The squad is nowhere near good enough.”

Wolves – A sleeping giant on the verge of waking up…

Every club has it’s time in the spotlight and with most it’s only ever for a few seasons before mediocrity and decline steps in.

Then it’s the relentless battle to get back to where the club once were and that is never easy when you’ve been relegated to the next division down with an anchor.

It also doesn’t help if the club isn’t stable behind the scenes, no matter what they say publicly.

Since Steve Morgan put Wolves up for sale in September last year, speculation has been rife about who will be the club’s new owners. After eight years, the owner wants to sell without any kind of reason, after buying the club from Jack Hayward for a tenner.

It would appear that there has been interest from a number of parties, but none that Chief Executive Jez Moxey will discuss, and now there’s talk of Chinese takeover from billionaire Robin Li.

The same Robin Li that AC Milan President Berlusconi sold his club to recently.

According to the Wolves Express & Star the club are awaiting an announcement of a takeover, whilst transfer targets pass them by with only three weeks of the pre-season left.

Wolves’ cause is looking a long way from being sorted out in a season that they wanted to try and grab a top six place and push for the Premier League. At the moment, the behind the scenes uncertainty is doing more harm than good.

Jose Mourinho’s agent and renowned super-agent Jorge Mendes is instrumental in the Chinese takeover with a deal that could be completed before the start of the season, with manager Kenny Jackett facing the axe.

Former Porto manager Jolen Lopetgui is expected to replace Jackett, as Wolves become the latest Midlands club to be taken over following Aston Villa’s buy-out by Dr Tony Xia in June.

Li’s consortium is in advanced due diligence, with Jez Moxey beginning the process of delivering the business plan to the Football League, which includes proof of funding.

Deals for players have fallen through due to the takeover process while Idrissa Sylla had agreed to sign from Anderlecht for £2.3million last month, but that deal is one of a few thought to have collapsed.

However, if the deal goes through with Mendes and Li, then there appears to be a lot to look forward to for Wolves fans and the awakening of a dormant sleeping giant.

From the 1950s when Wolves won the league, through to a decline in the 60s and a re-emergence in the early 70s with legends Dougan, Hibbitt and Munro leading the way in the newly created UEFA Cup, the club have more bounce than Zebedee.

From a downward spiral in fortunes culminating in a spell in the league’s lowest tier, the club have bounced all the way back up to the Premier League before falling back to the Championship in 2011/12.

Their resilience apparently knows no bounds.

Wolves kick off their Championship season on August 6th with a trip to Rotherham United and it is hoped with better fortune within their grasp.

How MLS decided winners of Lionel Messi fixture lottery in 2024 – with everyone desperate for a visit from Inter Miami’s travelling circus

The Lionel Messi roadshow at Inter Miami is back for 2024, with MLS explaining how they settled on fixture lottery winners for the upcoming campaign.

  • International commitments taken into account
  • New season gets underway on February 21

    WHAT HAPPENED?

The Herons have become the biggest draw in American soccer, with eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi ensuring that sell-out crowds pack into venues across the United States. Inter Miami season tickets sold out within a matter of minutes of going on sale.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Their Eastern Conference rivals will get a visit from Messi and Co in 2024, but only three Western Conference teams could realistically host Tata Martino’s side. All 14 of the teams in that picture expressed interest in welcoming the all-time great to their backyard.

    DID YOU KNOW?

That list was quickly whittled down to six – with the Colorado Rapids, Vancouver Whitecaps and Real Salt Lake having never played Inter Miami since their MLS bow in 2020. Three others – the LA Galaxy, Minnesota United and Sporting Kansas City – have never hosted the Herons.

Colorado, RSL and Minnesota have been snubbed, with Brad Pursel – MLS’ SVP of game schedule management – telling : “Certainly we've had other great players come in the league. But there's only one Leo Messi.” He said that decisions on those missing out on the Messi show were down to “thinking of what would make sense in 2024, and then what would make sense in 2025.”

No new signings and no first-team sales: Man Utd are in danger of making a real mess of another transfer window

The Red Devils risk falling behind their rivals this summer after failing to sign or sell a single player while the takeover saga rumbles on

It feels as if the season only ended yesterday, but Manchester United players are due back at work next Monday to begin getting in shape for the next campaign. The players who did not take part in any international matches after the FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City – including Lisandro Martinez and Donny van de Beek – will be the first to report back at Carrington on July 3, while those who did play for their national teams will return from July 10.

Then the serious work begins: the first pre-season friendly against Leeds United on July 12 in Oslo followed by a fixture against Lyon in Glasgow on July 19. The club will then embark on an exhausting tour of the United States to face Arsenal, Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Wrexham, before a final tune-up game against Athletic Club in Dublin one week before the Premier League season starts.

The returning players will be placed on a ruthless training regime to get back in shape for the campaign. But while Erik ten Hag's men are subjected to a military-style programme, from the outside the club resembles an unorganised mess.

There is little sign of progress on transfers and even fewer prospects of enacting the player clearout that is needed to build on the progress made last season. And in the background, there is still no indication of who will own the club in the long term. Pre-season is usually associated with hope and excitement, but at United, not for the first time, there is a feeling of trepidation and unease.

    Transfer targets go elsewhere

The transfer window is open for another two months yet, but given what their rivals have been up to, United fans would be entitled to feel concerned about the lack of business they have done. The only tangible movement so far has been three bids for Mason Mount, none of which have managed to convince Chelsea to let go of their midfielder, even as he enters the final year of his contract.

Meanwhile, the club have apparently ended their pursuit of Harry Kane, who was believed to be their top target just a month ago, with Bayern Munich instead leading the race to sign England's captain. Bayern also look set to beat United to another transfer target in South Korea defender Kim Min-jae.

And despite longstanding interest in Declan Rice, United made no bid for the West Ham midfielder, who is set to join Arsenal in a British-record £105 million deal. Interest has been shown in Inter goalkeeper Andre Onana and Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund, meanwhile, but no formal bid has been made for either player.

Rivals making swift and smart moves

Meanwhile, United's rivals are wasting little time in improving their own squads. Chelsea have already signed Christopher Nkunku for £53 million, finally landing the top-level striker they were badly missing last season; treble-winning Manchester City have made their peace with Ilkay Gundogan leaving for Barcelona and have snapped up Mateo Kovacic; and Liverpool have done some early business by signing Alexis Mac Allister, another player who was on United's radar.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have been the busiest of the Premier League's big clubs. They announced the signing of Chelsea forward Kai Havertz on Wednesday, while in addition to closing in on Rice, they have made steps towards a move for former United target Jurrien Timber. Signing all three players would take their summer spending to a total of £200m ($252m) already.

Even Tottenham and Newcastle, who will hope to be battling for places in the top four, have made moves. Spurs have signed James Maddison from Leicester City, while the Magpies have agreed a deal to bring AC Milan star Sandro Tonali to the north east.

Deja-vu over 'one player at a time'

United, meanwhile, have been criticised in the past for focusing on one transfer at a time rather than simultaneously pursuing a number of targets. The club spent much of last summer trying to land Frenkie de Jong, for example. Barcelona were desperate to sell the Dutch maestro, who developed into a world star under Ten Hag's guidance at Ajax, but the player wanted to prove himself at Camp Nou and was unwilling to swap his idyllic lifestyle in Catalunya.

Rather than pursue alternatives, United wasted valuable weeks trying to lure De Jong, and once they finally conceded defeat, they had very little time left in the transfer window to sign an alternative while the season had already begun. It led to a desperate scramble for Adrien Rabiot and finally the move for Casemiro, an excellent signing but a costly, short-term deal at £70 million for a then 30-year-old.

The club appear to be adopting a similar strategy with Mount, however. It emerged in late May that United were trying to sign the Chelsea midfielder. They made their first bid for £40m in mid-June and have made two subsequent offers, of £50m and £55m, both of which have been knocked back by the Blues.

United's continued interest in a player who has just had a desperately disappointing season with Chelsea has raised eyebrows among plenty of fans, particularly given that midfield is not the most important area of the squad they need to address. Signing a world-class striker remains the club's number one priority, as Ten Hag has previously admitted, so it is baffling that there has been so little news of a serious bid for a centre-forward at this stage.

    The De Gea saga

United will also need to make a move for a goalkeeper after withdrawing their offer of a new contract for David de Gea. Most fans will agree that the club need to look beyond the Spaniard after a season beset by high-profile errors, but the U-turn makes the Red Devils look unprofessional as well as indecisive – even if it is ultimately the right call.

It looks as if the club offered De Gea a new contract despite their reservations about his form because it would be too costly to sign a new first-choice goalkeeper in the summer, only to change their mind after his unconvincing end to the season.

Their dilly-dallying is not only a slap in the face to the club's longest-ever serving goalkeeper and record clean sheet holder, it means they have wasted valuable time in signing a new No.1 too. Their terrible handling of the situation could well put off prospective new players from joining the club.

É importante trabalhar, observar as oportunidades e avançar.

2017 in football: Best moments of the year

As the new year looms, Goal looks back on some of the best and most significant moments in football during the last 12 months

Getty ImagesMessi's audacious Clasico shirt celebration

Back in April, as the 2016-17 Liga title race was heading towards a heated finale, Real Madrid and Barcelona locked horns at the Bernabeu. Barca came into the clash at the Bernabeu behind their bitter rivals and needed a win to haul themselves back into the title race.

Things got off to a bad start for the Blaugrana as Casemiro fired Real ahead, but Lionel Messi cancelled it out five minutes later. Ivan Rakitic then put Barca ahead mid-way through the second half, but James Rodriguez struck in the final five minutes to haul Madrid level. However, Messi rose to the occasion once again, blasting the winner past Keylor Navas in the 92nd minute.

What followed was one of the most iconic images of 2017 and certainly one that will endure in the annals of Clasico history as Messi coolly held aloft his shirt in front of Real Madrid fans to mark his 500th Barca goal and the one that saw him overtake Alfredo Di Stefano as the all-time Clasico top scorer.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesMessi single-handedly dragging Argentina to the World Cup

As the CONMEBOL World Cup qualification cycle came to a conclusion it looked like Argentina might not make it. Defeats to Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Ecuador, as well as too many draws, left the Albiceleste needing a win in their final in order to ensure their safe passage to Russia in 2018.

The game against Ecuador in Quito got off to a disastrous start as Romario Ibarra shot Los Amarillos in front after the first minute and it looked like Jorge Sampaoli's men were set to miss out on a place at the world's biggest tournament for the first time since 1970.

However, Messi was in no mood for such a narrative and he scored two goals within 10 minutes to put his country ahead before putting the icing on the cake with his hat-trick strike in the final 10 minutes. The Barcelona star had rescued his country and ensured that his talents will grace a fourth World Cup.

Getty ImagesThe retirement of Francesco Totti

May 28, 2017 was an emotional day in Italy as one of its greatest sporting heroes brought the curtain down on his career. After 25 years, Francesco Totti finally called it a day and he was given his swan song as a second-half substitute in Roma's 3-2 victory over Genoa at the Stadio Olimpico.

The World Cup winner bid farewell to the faithful with a passionate and tearful address, delivered from the pitch and it is a moment that will, no doubt live long in the memory.

Getty ImagesReal Madrid win consecutive Champions Leagues

Real Madrid are the most successful team in the history of the Champions League and they made yet more history in June 2017 when they became the first team to successfully defend the trophy in the modern era.

Real won the European Cup four years in succession in the 1950s, while Bayern Munich and Ajax each won it three times in a row in the 1970s. AC Milan won it twice in a row in the late 1980s, but notably no club had managed the feat since the adoption of the new format in 1992.

Los Blancos blew Juventus away in the final, easily beating the Italian champions 4-1 in Cardiff, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring twice.

Ainda jogador do Santos, atacante Rodrigão é afastado no Coritiba
