SAFC fans laud Burge

Sunderland fans were delighted with the performance of Lee Burge during their League Cup round of 16 tie with Queen’s Park Rangers.

The Black Cats travelled to Loftus Road on Tuesday evening in the Cup already as the lowest-ranked team left in the competition. The clash in London ended as a 0-0 draw after 90 minutes, and the north-east outfit progressed to the quarter-finals after prevailing 3-1 in the penalty shoot-out.

Burge was selected by Lee Johnson ahead of usual first choice Ron-Thorben Hoffmann, and the back-up choice put in a strong performance. He made three saves (via SofaScore) and was a rock between the sticks for his side, which is quite the turnaround given the criticism he has previously suffered from the supporters.

After the final whistle, the supporters were quick to praise Burge for helping them progress. They took to social media platform Twitter to share their thoughts on his impressive showing.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about Burge below

Sheffield Wednesday: Sow must be axed

After securing a 2-1 win over Mansfield Town in the Papa John’s Trophy in midweek, Sheffield Wednesday are back in League One action this weekend with a showdown against Bolton Wanderers.

A late injury-time goal from Theo Corbeanu secured the victory for Darren Moore’s side in midweek after Lewis Wing opened the scoring in the second half, only for the visitors to equalise a few minutes later.

On the chalkboard

One player that played in midweek that failed to impress was Owls attacker Sylla Sow, who we feel should be dropped from the team to face Bolton at the weekend.

Wednesday signed Sow back in August from Dutch club RKC Waalwijk on a free transfer. Since then, the winger has made just two appearances for the Owls in League One, coming off the substitutes bench on both occasions.

During the match against the League Two side in midweek, Sow, who played through the entire game, only managed to rack up one shot at goal which was off target.

Furthermore, he won just four out of the ten duels he was involved in and lost possession on 12 occasions. That ultimately earned him a rather uninspiring overall match rating of 6.2/10, making him the lowest-rated Wednesday player on the day according to SofaScore.

Combine that with the fact that Wednesday’s previous league game lose at home to Oxford United left them in 12th place in the league table with 15 points, we feel that Wednesday need to make a change and do all they can to beat Bolton. That includes dropping Sow from the team.

In terms of who could replace the 25-year-old, we feel that Moore should bring either Lee Gregory or Callum Paterson back into the team who both have two league goals to their name for the match against Bolton.

Either way, we feel that Sow should return to the substitutes bench for this upcoming clash with the hope that he can make the most of his opportunity if he comes on at any point.

However, thinking about his long-term future at the club, the fact that he has only been there for a few months should be taken into account given his lack of regular playing time in the league. At the moment, there should be no concerns about his progression.

Oliver Burke attracting interest

Sheffield United centre-forward Oliver Burke is attracting interest ahead of the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Football League World, who claim that both Middlesbrough and Blackburn Rovers have maintained their interest in the Blades striker, whom each club registered their interest in during the closing stages of the summer transfer window, and may look to sign the 24-year-old in the winter market.

Previous reports claimed that Slavisa Jokanovic had given the Sheffield United board the green light to sell the Scotland international this summer, in a bid to fund the 53-year-old manager’s own moves in the market – suggesting this could once again be the case in January.

Get rid

Considering Burke cost Sheffield United around £5.85m plus Callum Robinson, in addition to the fact the centre-forward earns a princely £19k-per-week at Bramall Lane, it is a fairly easy argument to make that the Scot has been something of a waste of money for the Blades.

Indeed, over his 25 Premier League appearances last season, the £5.4m-rated man scored just one goal, registered one assist and missed three big chances for his side, as well as hitting the target with an average of a mere 0.2 shots per game.

These returns saw the 24-year-old earn a highly disappointing seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.58, ranking him as United’s fifth-worst performer in the league.

Things have not improved over the striker’s three Championship appearances so far this season, with the former RB Leipzig forward scoring no goals, registering no assists and creating no big chances for his teammates, returns which have seen him average a SofaScore match rating of 6.53.

As such, should Middlesbrough and Blackburn indeed make a move for Burke in January, it would appear highly advisable for Jokanovic to get rid of the centre-forward, as it would very much seem as if he is stealing a living at Sheffield United at present.

South Africa regain second place

South Africa have moved back ahead of India in the ICC Test Championship table after defeating Bangladesh by an innings in both matches of their two-Test series last month.India and South Africa had been separated by just a fraction of a ratings point before the series began, so the prospect of a change in the pecking order was always on the cards, after India had claimed the No. 2 spot by beating Australia 2-0 in October and November.Despite South Africa’s yawning margins of victory at Bloemfontein and Centurion, there are still 13 points separating them from the pace-setters Australia, who made amends for their India defeat by sealing a 2-0 series win over New Zealand in Adelaide on Monday.Meanwhile, at the other end of the table, New Zealand have slipped below West Indies in eighth place. They had been just one ratings point ahead of West Indies before the series but defeats in Brisbane and Adelaide mean they now slip down the ladder. However, the good news for Daniel Vettori and his team is that they have an immediate opportunity to claim the place back as they prepare to play host to West Indies for a two-Test series later this month. Victory in that series would enable them to return to seventh in the table but a drawn series or defeat will leave West Indies ahead.

Pujara scores second triple in a week

Cheteshwar Pujara, the Saurashtra captain, has scored his second triple-century in a week, notching up 309 against Mumbai in the Under-22 CK Nayudu Trophy in Rajkot. Last Monday, Pujara made 386 against Maharashtra at the same venue in the same tournament.Saurashtra gained three points from their first-innings lead after Mumbai were bowled out for 473 in reply to their 754.Pujara said he was “immensely satisfied” at scoring two triple-centuries. “I came in at No. 3 in both the matches and was happy to stay at the wicket for such long periods of time,” he told the . While he spent eleven and a half hours at the crease against Maharashtra, he batted for nearly nine against Mumbai. “What makes me happy is that in both the cases, I batted for two days at a stretch.”Pujara has been picked for the Challenger Trophy, featuring national players and those on the fringes, starting on Saturday. His two mammoth scores come ahead of the two Tests and seven ODIs against England. “I think I’m comfortable in both forms of the game. The Challengers will be a great platform for me to show my one-day skills.”Debu Mitra, the Saurashtra coach, said it was Pujara’s solid defence that made him such a good player. “If you have a good defence, you’ve won half the battle,” Mitra said. “This boy has a sound defensive technique and enormous powers of concentration.”But while he is happy to have his technique compared to Rahul Dravid, also known for his impenetrable defence, Pujara said it wasn’t for him to decide whether he would replace Dravid in the Indian team. “Dravid is a great player and I am a huge of fan of his, just as I follow Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Ricky Ponting. I pray for half an hour every day and that helps me in my batting.”Kris Srikkanth, the BCCI’s chairman of selectors, said Pujara will be watched keenly during the Challengers. “Scoring two triple-hundreds in any form of cricket is a great achievement,” Srikkanth said. “I have seen him bat in the Test against New Zealand A and the guy looks extremely talented.”

O restante é a base do time campeão paulista.

Clayson treinou internamente e o restante do grupo trabalhou no campo anexo, como Matheus, Caique, Mendoza, Bruno Paulo, Rodrigo Figueiredo e Ameixa.

O Corinthians ainda realiza mais dois treinamentos em São Paulo antes de embarcar para Salvador, palco da partida contra o Vitória.

Nuno now plotting Traore swoop for Spurs

According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur boss Nuno Espirito Santo is ‘keen’ to reunite with Wolves star Adama Traore in north London as the club ‘weigh up a move’ to sign him.

The Lowdown: Spurs in attacker chase…

As reported by football.london, Spurs’ first priority is an overhaul in defence this summer with the Lilywhites eyeing, preferably, after two new centre-back signings.

However, they also have their eyes on strengthening in the attacking positions, as highlighted by the capture of young winger Bryan Gil from Sevilla.

Tottenham have earmarked the likes of Danny Ings and Dusan Vlahovic as possible forward additions, with the Daily Mail now coming out with another link.

The Latest: Spurs weigh up Traore move…

As explained by the Mail and journalist Adrian Kajumba, Traore is now a target for Tottenham as Nuno eyes a possible reunion with his former star player at Molineux.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-updates-copy/” title=”Tottenham latest developments…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Wolves have yet to receive ‘any official contact’ for the 25-year-old but they will consider letting him leave this summer amid Spurs’ fresh interest.

However, managing director Fabio Paratici faces a financial battle to sign Traore given Wolves would want a fee ‘similar’ to the £45 million they banked for Diogo Jota last summer.

The Verdict: Exciting but unlikely…

The Spaniard has been quite an exciting player to watch since his debut in the Premier League nearly six years ago.

Last season, Traore completed more dribbles per 90 than any other player in the English top flight (4.1) – highlighting his real threat going forward (WhoScored).

He has also attracted praise from Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, who called him ‘undefendable’ after the Reds beat Wolves 1-0 in March (Liverpool Echo).

Nuno himself has made no secret of his admiration for Traore in the past, lauding the player as ‘amazing’ and ‘unique’ (The Athletic).

However, given his possible £45 million tag, this move could be too difficult to pull off given Tottenham are having to adopt a sell-to-buy policy.

Nahitan Nandez rejects Leeds move

An update has emerged on reported Leeds transfer target Nahitan Nandez regarding his thoughts on a move to Elland Road.

What’s the talk?

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, via Sport Witness, the Uruguayan is closing in on a transfer to Italian giants Inter.

The midfielder, who is reportedly valued at €36m (£31m), is said to have turned down the opportunity to sign for Leeds this summer and pursue a switch to the reigning Serie A champions instead.

Bielsa will be fuming

Marcelo Bielsa will be fuming with this update as it suggests that Leeds did not do enough to convince Nandez to come to Elland Road this summer. Victor Orta failed to entice him to the Yorkshire club and now they will watch on as he completes a transfer to Inter in the coming weeks.

Of course, it is difficult to begrudge the player for deciding to sign with a team set to play Champions League football next term following their Serie A title success. Playing for Inter could be a dream come true for him if he is able to become a regular in the side and win major trophies in Italy, but that does not do much to dim the disappointment from the Leeds perspective.

Serie A expert Conor Clancy said earlier this summer that Nandez would have been a good addition to Leeds’ squad as his versatility could please Bielsa.

He told This Is Futbol: “Anywhere Bielsa wants to play him, he’d do a job. I like him a lot. I think he’s only about five foot seven, but you wouldn’t know it if you just watched clips of him, he is a little bit of a machine. He’s so powerful but at the same time, has really, really good ball control.”

This suggests that Nandez could have been a useful player for the Argentine coach as he is able to play in a variety of positions, whilst Clancy calling him “powerful” and “a machine” indicates that he has the engine that Bielsa requires from his midfield players.

Therefore, he will be sickened that Nandez will not be a Leeds player next season, because the midfielder seemingly has all the attributes needed to succeed in Yorkshire. It will now be down to Orta to identify alternative targets and bring in a quality player for Bielsa to forget about the Uruguay international.

AND in other news, He’s ready: Leeds could save millions with £20k-p/w machine who Bielsa loves…
