Alvo do Fla!

Struggling sides look to start turnaround

ESPNcricinfo previews the IPL game between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Rajasthan Royals in Bangalore

The Preview by Abhishek Purohit18-Apr-2011Match factsTuesday, April 19
Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)Can the new Sri Lanka captain turn Bangalore’s fortunes around?•AFPBig pictureSeveral franchises have started this season of the IPL with completely new squads, led by new captains. Results have varied. Sides like Kolkata Knight Riders, who have breezed to three consecutive wins, and Kings XI Punjab, who have won two on the trot, have found success. But Royal Challengers Bangalore have found life hard, losing their last three games. While a new squad will naturally take some time to settle, what could be more revealing is the background of sides going in for an overhaul. While a side like Kolkata had every reason to do so given their woeful performances in preceding seasons, Bangalore’s decision, on early evidence, could well turn out to be a case of trying to fix something that, albeit a bit creaky, wasn’t broken.Their problems have started at the top. Despite having Tillakaratne Dilshan in the squad, their opening partnerships have been worth 7, 0, 8 and 1 in their four matches so far. The bowling has leaked in excess of 160 on all three occasions they have bowled first. Sending in Zaheer Khan and Asad Pathan at No. 3 can be called either unconventional or desperate, depending on what view of the half-filled glass one holds. Not to mention the numerous misfields and dropped catches in their previous match against Chennai Super Kings. At the moment, Bangalore could do with lots of inspiration, as could Rajasthan Royals, who put in a performance against Kolkata on Sunday that, according to their captain Shane Warne, was “weak, soft and embarrassing” . Rajasthan’s abject batting capitulation – they scored 81 – even led Warne to call it a “boys against men” kind of innings. Rajasthan have generally punched above their weight in the IPL but have been blown away by a strong Kolkata unit twice in three days. Tuesday’s match is the second of their three away games in five days. Can the strong words from their inspirational captain make them lift their performance against a struggling Bangalore side?Team talkBangalore could look at sending Virat Kohli in at No 3, given how the experiments with pinch-hitters have come unstuck. While Dravid should walk into the XI if he is fit, it will be interesting to see whether Rajasthan drop Shaun Tait for Botha. On current form, and considering the all-round skills of Botha, they should. Ramsey in training for Rangers

Scottish football journalist Mark Hendry has now noticed a potential big boost for Glasgow Rangers before their game at Ibrox tonight.

The Lowdown: Team news

Speaking in his pre-game press conference ahead of the match, Giovanni van Bronckhorst was unsure whether Aaron Ramsey or Kemar Roofe will make the squad, as they still had one more training session to go.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-4/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

It looks as if they have now had that session, with the Dutch manager set to finalise his squad for the second leg of their UEFA Europa League semi-final at home to RB Leipzig.

The Latest: Ramsey spotted

Writing in his latest piece for Football Scotland, Hendry spotted Ramsey in their final training session, while Roofe was nowhere to be seen.

This suggests that while the latter may not make the squad, Ramsey could well feature, having trained as normal with the rest of the team.

The Verdict: Big boost

It would certainly be a big boost if Ramsey is now able to make the squad after his injury problems.

He has the experience of playing in big European football games with both Arsenal and Juventus, and so could help settle the rest of the side as they aim to overturn a 1-0 deficit.

Nonetheless, the Wales international has ranked highly among his teammates in terms of average shots and key passes per match in the competition so far, and has already shown his credentials with two goals in the Scottish Premiership during his loan spell (WhoScored).

Ramsey would give van Bronckhorst another handy squad option, even if he has to start from the bench.

West Ham: Ornstein drops Bowen update

West Ham United have been dealt a major injury blow regarding Jarrod Bowen ahead of their upcoming Europa League fixture.

What’s the latest?

That’s according to David Ornstein’s recent report for The Athletic, in which the journalist revealed that, after picking up a heel injury in the 1-0 defeat to Liverpool last weekend, the right-winger now looks set to miss out on Thursday evening’s trip to Sevilla for the first leg of their Europa League round of 16 clash, as well as the weekend’s fixture against Aston Villa.

Regarding the 25-year-old’s knock, Ornstein writes: “David Moyes’ side could be without him for a handful of games after the 25-year-old picked up a heel injury in the defeat at Liverpool. Although the club yesterday confirmed that he had suffered no significant damage, this week’s Europa League trip to Sevilla and the weekend’s home game against Aston Villa are likely to come too soon.”

Hammers will be seething

Considering just how impressive Bowen has been for West Ham in the current campaign, the news that the winger now looks as if he will be unavailable for what is undoubtedly the club’s biggest game of the season is sure to have left the London Stadium faithful seething.

Indeed, over his 28 Premier League appearances this term, the £58m-rated forward has been in spectacular form for the Hammers, scoring eight goals, registering eight assists and creating eight big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 2.4 shots and making 1.3 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the £96k-per-week attacker average an extremely admirable SofaScore match rating of 7.09, ranking him as David Moyes’ second-best performer in the top flight of English football.

As such, with a trip to the side who currently occupy second place in the LaLiga table already having been something of a daunting task, the fact that the Irons will now have to face Julen Lopetegui’s outfit without both their leading goalscorer and assist-maker in all competitions this season is sure to put a major dent in West Ham’s chances of securing a positive result at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium.

Indeed, the unavailability of Bowen not only comes as a huge blow to the Hammers’ hopes of progressing to the next round of the competition, but it also shines further light on the club’s failure to bring in attacking reinforcements in the January transfer window.

Split-innings birth causes complications

The day before the new domestic split-innings tournament is due to start and Queensland’s players are still waiting for their uniforms

Barsby’s reward

Trevor Barsby will be in charge of Queensland until at least 2011-12 after gaining a contract extension. Barsby replaced Terry Oliver in 2008 and since then his simple philosophy has guided the side to two Sheffield Shield finals and a one-day trophy.
“From my own experience as a player, when things were made complicated all it did was confuse me,” Barsby said. “When dealing with a group of players and support staff, you’ve just to keep it as simple as possible.”

The day before the new domestic split-innings tournament is due to start and Queensland’s players are still waiting for their uniforms. Out on the Gabba turf there are no sponsors’ logos and the competition stumps haven’t arrived for Wednesday’s day-nighter between Queensland and Tasmania. On the eve of the revolution of the cumbersomely named National One-Day Cup, the local officials admit to holding their collective breath. And that’s before the major issues of how the players and spectators react to the 45-over format, which will be contested over two innings of 20 overs before concluding with two 25-over segments. The change of structure has been designed by Cricket Australia to reinvigorate one-day cricket, with the hope of it being adopted internationally.First it has to be embraced by the mostly sceptical players, who have grown to understand the need to perform whether they like the idea or not. Privately some are scathing, yet publicly they are more pragmatic. When the Twenty20 Big Bash began in 2005-06 there was general enthusiasm, especially from the young players, but this time the mood is one of confusion.Chris Hartley, Queensland’s wicketkeeper, said he has an open mind about the event. “The fact of the matter is it doesn’t matter what they’re playing, there are 22 guys out there and the competitive juices will start flowing and everyone will be going at it hard,” he told ESPNcricinfo. “The biggest thing that has led to the confusion was not having played the format. A lot of players didn’t see how the change of structure would increase interest in the game, but we’re yet to play it at a full-scale level.”The Bulls have a difficult start running into Tasmania, who are well known for trialling unorthodox methods, including opening the bowling with their spinner Xavier Doherty. “They’re a good team when it comes down to these tactics, and are led by George Bailey,” Hartley said. “But in the first couple of games it will be really worrying about what we do. And we’ll have to learn pretty quickly.”Hartley would like to think Chris Simpson, who stood down as captain last month, is Queensland’s version of Doherty after an off-season spent tinkering with his off-spin. “He’s an excellent slow bowler in the shorter versions of the game,” Hartley said. “From behind the stumps, I think he’s bowling better than he has ever.”How the local players look is still to be determined. Celtic: Reo Hatate impressed v St Johnstone

Celtic had a rather enjoyable afternoon back in Premiership action today following their Old Firm victory last weekend.

This time, Ange Postecoglou’s side secured a tantalising 7-0 victory over St Johnstone at Parkhead courtesy of six different goalscorers.

Three first-half strikes from Reo Hatate, Giorgos Giakoumakis and Daizen Maeda gave the home side a comfortable 3-0 lead at the midway point. A penalty from Josip Juranovic, a brace from Matt O’Riley and a clinching goal from Liel Abada gave Postecoglou and the home fans a lot to savour as they take another step closer to the title. On a day when many Hoops players had a lot to smile about, one player in particular lit up Parkhead and stole the show.Having opened the scoring for his team, Reo Hatate had 60 touches of the ball before being replaced by fellow midfielder David Turnbull in the 55th minute. Out of the 47 passes he attempted, 43 found their intended target, including all three of the long balls he attempted. He also had three shots on target in total and won the penalty that Juranovic put away in the second half, in addition to completing both of his dribbles, showing how tricky he was to play against. That was in stark contrast with his fellow countryman Maeda, who failed to complete any of his three dribble attempts. The 24-year-old also did his bit defensively by winning three of his four duels, showing how useful he was in and out of possession for his team. This performance ultimately earned the midfield gem an overall match rating of 8/10 from SofaScore, making him the joint-second highest rated Celtic player to start the game.Labelled an “outrageous” player by Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn, Hatate has shown once again today why Postecoglou chose to bring the Japanese maestro to Parkhead in the January transfer window. If the Australian coach can keep getting Hatate and the rest of the Celtic players to deliver performances like this throughout the remainder of the season, they should be a shoo-in to secure the Premiership title. In other news: £2.7m down the drain as Celtic had a howler on “difficult” £450k-rated Parkhead flop

NUFC: Waugh drops big update on defender

A big Newcastle United transfer update has emerged on the final day of the January window regarding the future of Jamal Lewis.

What’s the talk?

According to The Athletic’s Chris Waugh, the Magpies are set to sanction a temporary exit for the former Norwich academy product.

He tweeted: “Another outgoing possibility for #NUFC before window closes is Jamal Lewis, whose opportunities will be limited by Matt Targett’s arrival. It’s understood #NUFC will let Lewis go out on loan, but unsure where yet.”

Deadline day error

PIF are heading for a deadline day error with this decision to allow the Northern Ireland international to leave the club on loan.

Prior to his recent injury, he showed signs of promise at left-back. In the 1-0 win over Burnley (one of only two Newcastle victories in the league this season), the defender recorded a solid SofaScore rating of 7.0. He won five of his nine ground duels in that game whilst making an impressive four clearances, one interception, one block and four tackles throughout the clash, as per SofaScore.

At the age of 24, he also has plenty of time left to develop his game. This means that he could benefit from a direct battle with seemingly impending arrival Matt Targett for the left-back spot, and it could push both of them on to improve themselves, whereas that may not be the case with Matt Ritchie.

The 32-year-old Scot has been poor this season in the Premier League, and fans will surely be frustrated if he ends the window as the back-up to Targett instead of Lewis. He has averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.66 in the Premier League this term, showing that he has been able to deliver consistently reliable performances in the Newcastle side, which is why supporters will surely not want to see him kept in place of the ex-Canaries defender.

Therefore, PIF would be making a glaring deadline day error if they sanction an exit for Lewis instead of trying to cash in on Ritchie. Eddie Howe could enjoy having Targett compete with the Northern Irishman at left-back as it could give him plenty of options from which to choose, rather than hoping that the former stays fit so that Howe is not forced to call on the veteran ex-Bournemouth player.

AND in other news, Newcastle now agree “terms” to sign “fantastic” £20k-p/w warrior, Howe surely buzzing…
