Roderick ton keeps Kent waiting

A dogged career-best 152 not out by Gloucestershire’s rookie wicketkeeper Gareth Roderick thwarted Kent’s hopes of securing a three-day win in Canterbury

23-Aug-2013
ScorecardGareth Roderick made his maiden Championship century•PA PhotosA dogged career-best 152 not out by Gloucestershire’s rookie wicketkeeper Gareth Roderick thwarted Kent’s hopes of securing a three-day win in Canterbury. The 21-year-old South African dug in for five hours to deny the hosts the chance of completing a second division double with a day to spare as the visitors limped in at stumps on 307 for 9 – trailing by 91 runs but with only one second innings wicket intact.Though Kent claimed the extra half-hour in a bid to wrap up the their second win of the season, Roderick held firm to give his side an outside chance of securing a draw should the forecast rain arrive in the south-east on the final day.In pursuit of 399 for a fourth championship win of the campaign, promotion-chasing Gloucestershire lost captain Michael Klinger as early as the fifth over.In attempting a flashing cover drive, he edged a Charlie Shreck leg-cutter to slip, then Benny Howell, promoted to bat at No. 3, went without scoring after spooning a low catch to Sam Northeast at cover.Gloucestershire slid even deeper into the mire when left-handed opener Chris Dent, having played one scoring shot in 36 minutes, followed one going across his body from Calum Haggett to edge to the wicketkeeper and make it 13 for 3.Alex Gidman and Hamish Marshall steadied the ship, albeit temporarily, in adding 28 before Marshall edged a leg-glance against Mitch Claydon to give keeper Geraint Jones a second catch of the session. Gidman and Gareth Roderick added 55 in 14 overs either side of lunch until Gidman, on 47, edged a delivery to first slip to give the impressively obdurate Haggett a deserved second scalp. Will Gidman departed soon after when his leg-side flick against Darren Stevens feathered the inside edge through to the keeper, bringing together Tom Smith and Roderick for a seventh wicket stand worth 109 in 33.3 overs.Roderick celebrated his maiden Championship ton from 157 balls and with 14 fours but lost Smith to the fourth delivery bowled with the second new ball when he pushed at one from Shreck to give Jones the fourth of his five catches.David Payne went in identical fashion to an even better diving catch by Jones then, five overs into the extra half-hour, James Tredwell turned one through the gate of Craig Miles to peg back offstump and make it 299 for 9.The day started with the drama of two quickfire declarations after the captains, presumably with one eye on the miserable weather forecast for Saturday, contrived a third-day run chase deal. For his part Gloucestershire skipper Klinger declared on his side’s overnight total of 80 without loss – a match deficit of 394 runs on first innings.Kent then batted for four minutes, enabling the visitors to make good their poor over-rate and for Kent to add four runs before Kent captain Tredwell declared, leaving the visitors with almost six full sessions to score at an asking rate of 2.1 an over for victory.

Kevin Pietersen has been ruled out of all cricket for up to eight weeks by the knee injury which has been troubling him during the New Zealand tour. He will miss the deciding Test in Auckland, which starts on Friday, as well as the IPL with a view to him being fit for the Champions Trophy and the Ashes. The estimated recovery time makes Pietersen doubtful for the return series against New Zealand, beginning on May 16 at Lord’s. He first felt the problem, which could be caused by cartilage damage, during the warm-up match in Queenstown, although it only really came to light when he was absent for a session of the Dunedin Test. England were fielding at the time and it was played down as nothing serious. He made 0 and 12 in the first Test, and although he responded with 73 in Dunedin, he was never fluent but remained on the field.”Pietersen experienced knee pain while fielding in preparation for the four-day game in Queenstown earlier this month, ahead of the Test series,” the ECB said in a statement. “This has failed to resolve satisfactorily.”Recent scans confirm an injury to the right knee with bone bruising and possible cartilage damage to the kneecap. The 32-year-old will return to the UK for further investigations and specialist review.”The injury is likely to require ongoing assessments and a likely six-eight week period of rest and rehabilitation. Pietersen has therefore been withdrawn from all cricket including the Indian Premier League.”The fact Pietersen has not been kept on in New Zealand with the series at stake shows that time is already of the essence to get him ready for the main events of the English season. In 2009 he was forced out mid-way through the Ashes series with a career-threatening Achilles injury.Pietersen’s withdrawal will mean a likely recall to the middle order for Jonny Bairstow, the Yorkshire batsman who has not played since the Twenty20 series earlier in the tour. His previous Test was against India, in Mumbai, when he stood in for Ian Bell who went home for the birth of his child. It won’t be the first time Bairstow has replaced Pietersen in a Test line-up. He came in for the deciding match against South Africa, at Lord’s, last year following Pietersen’s dropping after the text-message controversy. Baristow responded with scores of 95 and 54. In five Tests he has scored 196 runs at 32.66.England will now be sweating on the fitness of two key players over the next two months. Graeme Swann is currently in the early stages of his recovery from elbow surgery after he was ruled out of the New Zealand tour on the morning of the first Test.

Jordan Cox, Paul Walter make champions Surrey toil at Chelmsford

New-look opening pair set stage before middle-order put big runs on the board against visitors

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay04-Apr-2025Essex (Cox 117, Walter 95, Critchley 45* Westley 40) vs Surrey Jordan Cox made sure his name remained on the England selectors’ radar with the ninth first-class century of his career, and fifth inside a year since joining Essex, as reigning champions Surrey toiled under bright Chelmsford skies. The 24-year-old Cox was on the cusp of an England debut in New Zealand last autumn before suffering another injury setback. But a swashbuckling 117 from 148 balls in the opening Rothesay County Championship match of the season can only have helped his cause ahead of a year in which England face first Zimbabwe and then India and Australia. His powerful innings overshadowed an otherwise excellent 95 from makeshift opener Paul Walter. The 30-year-old left-hander, better known for his big-hitting exploits in T20 cricket, fell just short of what would have been only his third red-ball century.Walter’s stands of 78 with rookie opener Charlie Allison and 100 with Cox, along with Cox’s 92 with Matt Critchley, underpinned an Essex total of 356 for 4 on the first day against a Surrey pace attack devoid of the likes of Gus Atkinson, Dan Worrall and Tom Lawes. Kemar Roach added some respite with 2 for 54 from 18 overs.Essex had won the toss and elected to bat on a benign green-top in front of a bumper home crowd of 2,370.Walter set the tone by marching to his fifty from 58 balls when he turned James Taylor off his legs for a single. He had dominated the first hour as Allison marked his first-class debut in look-and-learn mode. The 20-year-old, replacing Dean Elgar at the top of the order while the South African becomes used to the idea of being a father of twins, took 38 balls before hitting his first boundary, a square drive off Matt Fisher that took his score into double figures. The first-wicket stand ended when Dan Lawrence entered the Surrey attack and with his fourth delivery had Allison lbw for 25, playing down the wrong line, much to the delight of the former Essex man.Where Walter had been dominant in the opening stand, he became becalmed in the fifties either side of lunch as Tom Westley briefly took centre stage. The Essex captain rolled his wrists to turn Taylor through midwicket for four and later thick-edged Lawrence past a despairing slip.Westley contributed 40 towards a 48-run second-wicket stand before turning Roach into short midwicket’s hands. Walter added just five to his total in that 16-over partnership but then opened his shoulders and square-cut the first ball after Westley’s departure for his 10th four. There was greater equality between the third-wicket pair with Walter and Cox trading blows. Some of Cox’s hitting was effortless with no discernible back-lift, most notably his ninth boundary, a drive that scorched past mid-off, and brought up his half-century from 77 balls. The century partnership was reached with a single from Walter, but two balls later he gave Fisher his first Surrey wicket since the winter move from Yorkshire, when mis-hooking to Ben Foakes diving full-length down legside. Walter’s innings had lasted 172 balls and included 14 fours.Cox took up the cudgels immediately after tea, hitting Roach to three different parts of the boundary in an over. There was a strange incident just before Cox reached three-figures when he appeared to hit Foakes with his bat as the ball lobbed towards the wicketkeeper. No censure ensued and the century duly arrived with a straight drive off Lawrence for his 18th four.Cox added three more boundaries before he was beaten for pace by Roach to end a stay of a tad over three hours. It was just left to Critchley to confirm Essex’s domination as the sun went down with three successive fours off the expensive James Taylor and reach the close on 45 not out.

Deccan Chargers franchise up for sale

Deccan Chargers, the Hyderabad-based IPL franchise, has been officially put up for sale by its owners Deccan Chronicle Holdings Limited. The sale, announced in a newspaper advertisement on Thursday, will be through a bidding process that will be completed on September 13, with the winning bid announced on the same day.The franchise, whose owners have been facing financial problems, had approached the Indian board for help and the advertisement says the bid process will take place “under the aegis of the BCCI”. The tender notice makes it clear that the franchise will continue to be based in Hyderabad and that the winning bidder will acquire the franchise on an “as is, where is” basis – implying retention of the franchise name – but leaves the possibility of a fresh franchise agreement between the new owner and the BCCI open.Chargers, which has been reportedly mortgaged to banks, has been under pressure from its lenders to service its debt obligations. The bulk of the winning bid could go towards paying back the debt, with the notice directing the winning party to pay the consideration into a bank account as decided by the lenders. Five percent of the winning amount will have to be paid directly to the BCCI.Deccan Chronicle had been trying to sell the whole or part of the franchise for some time now, with T Venkattram Reddy, the Deccan Chronicle chairman, telling the recently that they were in advanced talks with potential buyers. But the deal reportedly ran into complications with some investors in the franchise asking the board to get involved. The franchise was bought by Deccan Chronicle for $107 million in the first IPL team auction in 2008. At the time, it was the third-most expensive franchise, after Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore.Chargers endured a difficult 2012 IPL season, finishing at No.8, above the wooden-spoon holders Pune Warriors. They were led by Kumar Sangakkara and coached by the former Australia batsman Darren Lehmann. The other notable overseas players include Dale Steyn, Cameron White and JP Duminy. They took the IPL title in 2009, when they were led by Adam Gilchrist, but with a different group of players.

Mumbai Indians snap up much-wanted Levi

Mumbai Indians have signed Richard Levi, the much-wanted South Africa batsman who recently hit the fastest Twenty20 international hundred, as a replacement for allrounder Andrew Symonds. Levi, who went unsold in the IPL player auction on February 4, had been contacted by various IPL franchises following his record-breaking century in the second Twenty20 international against New Zealand in Hamilton. Symonds, the former Australia allrounder, retired from professional cricket, citing family reasons, earlier this month.Levi announced his arrival on the international stage in only his second T20I. Opening the innings in South Africa’s chase of 174 against New Zealand, he smashed 13 sixes – a record – in an unbeaten 117 off 51 balls. His century came off just 45 balls. Prior to that knock, Levi had spent four seasons with South African franchise Cape Cobras, impressing in the domestic limited-overs competitions and the 2011-12 Champions League.Levi said he was excited to join Mumbai Indians because he would have the opportunity to play alongside his hero Sachin Tendulkar. “I have heard from friends that Mumbai Indians is like an extended family where the team shares a great bond and trusts youngsters,” he said. “Sachin Tendulkar has been my childhood hero and it would be exciting to share the dressing room with him.”Mumbai Indians started the last IPL season with Tendulkar opening alongside Davy Jacobs, the South African wicketkeeper-batsman. Jacobs, though, has had problems with injuries and has not played professional cricket since last year’s Champions League due to a recurring hip problem. Mumbai Indians have had to try different opening combinations, with Aiden Blizzard, Sarul Kanwar and James Franklin all getting opportunities at the top of the order. Levi could bring solidity to the position if he cements his place.Edited by Dustin Silgardo

Heavyweights in game of patience

Look at the team rosters and you will be inclined to call Tamil Nadu the favourites ahead of Mumbai on the eve of the Ranji Trophy semi-final which starts at Wankhede Stadium from Tuesday. In L Balaji, S Badrinath, Dinesh Karthik, M Vijay and Abhinav Mukund, Tamil Nadu have five players who have played for India, and are still in the reckoning. In contrast, Mumbai have only Abhishek Nayar and the pair of Wasim Jaffer and Ramesh Powar, two marathoners who run as if there is no finish tape, but with little hope of returning to the India squad.Yet Mumbai retain that bonding, that ability to pull together as a team, regardless of how strong or meagre the resources at hand, a quality that has seen them emerge domestic champions on five occasions from the turn of the millennium. In the corresponding period, Tamil Nadu entered the finals only twice, in 2002-02 and 2003-04, faced Mumbai on both occasions, and came out second. Badrinath played in both those defeats while Balaji, Tamil Nadu’s current captain, was part of the 2003 side. If you do not win a Ranji Trophy when you have played for more than ten years, it hurts, as Balaji admitted. It is this pain of the absence of the crown which is bound to be the driving force for Tamil Nadu over the next four days. But Balaji’s biggest challenge would be to keep his inexperienced bowling attack focussed, accurate and patient. Yo Mahesh and Jagannathan Kaushik, his fast-bowling partners, need Balaji to prompt them from mid-off and mid-on all the time.Aushik Srinivas is Tamil Nadu’s leading spinner at 18. The slow left-arm bowler will have fond memories of this city, as it was against Mumbai that he had got his career-best figures of 7 for 107 at the Bandra Kurla Complex ground in 2009. But Aushik tends to get distracted and bowls wrong lines; he needs constant guidance from Balaji and J Gokulakrishnan, the Tamil Nadu bowling coach. Not only does he have to play the mentor, Balaji also has to give the right start with the new ball for his young attack to stay calm. He has declared himself fit for the match after sitting out on the third day of the quarter-final against Maharashtra due to back spasms. It was an old injury, Balaji said, which he now knows how to handle. If anything, Balaji, an intense man, and an aggressive bowler, will only be hungry to accept the challenge.Luckily for them, the visitors’ batting is full of experience and talent. Vijay, Abhinav, Badrinath and Karthik will be itching to perform and impress the selectors who will assemble in Chennai on January 15 to pick the ODI squad for the tri-series in Australia. With 825 runs, Abhinav is only 16 behind Rajasthan’s Robin Bist, the highest run-getter this season. But he has never played at Wankhede and importantly, never made a Ranji century against Mumbai. Vijay has been inconsistent this season; the absence of any century highlights that fact.Badrinath was ruled out for part of the season with an injury. He returned for the previous four matches and made a hundred against Gujarat. It was his 250 that had forced Mumbai to concede the first-innings lead in 2009. The batting form of the wicketkeeper Karthik, for whom Wankhede will soon be the home ground in the IPL after he was bought by Mumbai Indians, allows his team to field five bowlers.Mumbai will be wary of all these men, once they sort their own issues. Despite the absence of Ajit Agarkar, Mumbai have managed to get this far, and credit goes to Ramesh Powar, the joint-highest wicket-taker among the four semi-finalists. His success only exposes the limitations of Mumbai’s fast bowlers.Though Dhawal Kulkarni got a five-for in the first innings against Madhya Pradesh in the quarter-final, he failed to get a wicket the second time around and sat out the final day with a shin niggle. Balwinder Sandhu – who claimed a five-for on debut against Punjab – bowled gamely against MP, but lacks the pace to breach the formidable Tamil Nadu batting order. Kshemal Waingankar can bowl honest spells but needs support from his captain as well as from the opposite end.The return of Nayar, who was forced to miss the previous two matches due to a swollen thumb, could provide Mumbai some respite. Though Suryakumar Yadav has been the highest run-getter for Mumbai, Nayar has been their best batsman, playing with a maturity that comes with years and the willingness to accept the responsibility of being a senior batsman. Along with his batting, Nayar has also proved handy with the ball, bowling nagging lines, at times wide outside the off stump, to distract batsman into playing a false stroke.”Most of their batsmen have played for India and have been scoring runs. Even in their bowling you have to guard against Balaji who is always a threat. So you have to guard against everything,” Wasim Jaffer, the Mumbai captain, said. Accoding to Balaji, it would be a tough game, like always. “Whenever Tamil Nadu and Mumbai play, both teams play hard,” Balaji said.In the end it would be a game of patience, as WV Raman, the former India batsman and Tamil Nadu coach, said on , ESPNcricinfo’s audio show.
