Sri Lanka seek to build on fightback

ESPNcricinfo previews the third ODI between Pakistan and Sri Lanka in Dubai

The Preview by Siddhartha Talya17-Nov-2011Match factsFriday, November 18
Start time 1500 (1100 GMT)Mahela Jayawardene is just 13 runs away from reaching 10,000 runs in ODIs•AFPBig PictureSri Lanka’s first victory on this tour of the UAE would come as a relief for them not merely for the fact that they broke a winless run. The win also marked a return to form for Mahela Jayawardene, whose struggles with the bat this tour have been a setback for a team that is heavily reliant on a core group of experienced batsmen that includes him.Equally encouraging was the performance of their bowlers, who’ve collectively fallen short of matching a superior Pakistan attack but have been able to improve their chances with the return of Lasith Malinga for the limited-overs games. The series level 1-1, Sri Lanka have the confidence and the players in form they need to press ahead and put behind them the defeat in the Tests and the capitulation in the first ODI.Pakistan will be disappointed they were bowled out in 46.3 overs in a chase they could have sealed, thanks to Umar Akmal’s own return to form. He made 91 and was looking good in the company of the middle-order batsmen who chipped in with useful contributions, but didn’t do enough to secure a win. Abdul Razzaq, Sarfraz Ahmed and Shahid Afridi were set, yet failed to see their team through. Pakistan are still favourites to take this series but Sri Lanka’s renewed confidence could make that task significantly tougher.Form guidePakistan: LWWWW
Sri Lanka: WLWLWWatch out for…He was once a batting allrounder but the role has reversed for Thisara Perera, who opens the bowling and bats at No.8. His onslaught against Zaheer Khan in the World Cup 2011 final is a reminder that he has much to offer with the bat. He’s useful with the ball with his variations in pace. He was included in this series as a replacement for the injured Dhammika Prasad, and will want to seize this opportunity to keep his place. He hasn’t started too badly, with an economical 2 for 30 in nine overs in Sri Lanka’s win.Abdul Razzaq has been around for a while, but he’s still only 31 and a big all-round asset for Pakistan. In a strong bowling line-up, his role has been limited – his last 10-over spell came in November 2009 and as far as opportunities with the bat are concerned, even more so. Though no one would question his ability, a strong all-round performance remains due. With Shoaib Malik also in the squad, he does face competition.Team newsPakistan don’t have any compelling reasons to make changes to their side but perhaps they could give Junaid Khan a go, following his impressive show in the Tests.Pakistan (possible): 1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Imran Farhat, 3 Younis Khan, 4 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 5 Umar Akmal, 6 Abdul Razzaq, 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), 9 Umar Gul, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Aizaz Cheema/Junaid Khan.Chanaka Welegedera has been drafted into the Sri Lankan squad in place of an injured Suranga Lakmal, who didn’t play the previous game. However, it remains to be seen if Welegedara plays tomorrow.Sri Lanka (possible): 1 Upul Tharanga, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan (capt), 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Dinesh Chandimal, 5 Mahela Jayawardene, 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Jeevan Mendis, 8 Thisara Perera, 9 Lasith Malinga, 10 Seekkuge Prasanna, 11 Dilhara Fernando.Stats and trivia Mahela Jayawardene is 13 runs short of 10,000 runs in ODIs and 46 runs short of reaching the same landmark in Tests. He’ll become the ninth batsman to reach that landmark in ODIs. Quotes”I think 230-250 would be a par score these days with the new rules.”

Dhawan, Abhinav batter Rajasthan

Rest of India secured the Irani Cup by virtue of a whopping first-innings lead and then, instead of enforcing the follow-on, chose to bat again and batter Rajasthan further

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Oct-2011
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsShikhar Dhawan got his second century of the match•ESPNcricinfo LtdRest of India secured the Irani Cup by virtue of a whopping first-innings lead and then, instead of enforcing the follow-on, chose to bat again and batter Rajasthan further. And batter them they did. Shikhar Dhawan and Abhinav Mukund scored at breakneck pace, made substantial centuries, and helped Rest of India amass 354 for 2 in 54 overs. The late declaration, however, reduced Rest of India’s chances of an outright win as Rajasthan had all ten wickets intact at stumps, chasing an impossible 618 for victory.Rajasthan began the fourth day in Jaipur needing 157 to avoid the follow-on with four wickets in hand. They managed only 93. Ashok Menaria, who had resumed on 59, made 20 more before falling to left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha. Menaria had charged and lofted straight to long-on. In his next over Ojha had the other overnight batsman, Deepak Chahar, lbw with an arm-ball.Tailenders Madhur Khatri and Sumit Mathur were both dropped by Manish Pandey at slip as they swung freely for a few quick runs. They added 50 for the ninth wicket before Vinay Kumar trapped Khatri lbw for 31 off 28 balls. Minutes later, Ojha completed his five-wicket haul by inducing an edge to slip from Mathur. Rajasthan were dismissed for 400, trailing by 263.Parthiv Patel decided to bat again, instead of giving his bowlers more time in the field, and Rest of India pursued quick runs. The openers attacked from the start with Dhawan continuing to punish Chahar for pitching too short. He brought up his half-century off 53 deliveries, by driving a full ball from Chahar to the cover boundary. Abhinav made up for his first-innings failure and reached his fifty off 73 balls. They continued plundering a clueless Rajasthan attack and by tea the opening stand was 200 in 33 overs, with both Dhawan and Abhinav in the 90s.In the first over after the break, Dhawan cut Chahar and ran a double to bring up a century off 90 balls. He became the first batsman to score a hundred in each innings of the Irani Cup. Abhinav reached his century a few overs later, off 121 balls. It was his third successive hundred in the Irani Cup. Dhawan then laid into Robin Bist, hitting him for two fours and a six in one over and four fours and a six in another. The partnership had swelled to 310 in the 46th over when Dhawan miscued a loft to long-on and was caught for 155 off 126 balls. His innings contained 22 fours and three sixes. Mukund fell a few balls after bringing up his 150, holing out to long-on off Menaria. Rest of India were 328 for 2 and the declaration came not long after. With the Irani Cup already lost on the first-innings lead, Rajasthan could only battle to avoid an outright defeat and their openers survived seven overs before stumps. They made 28 and will need to negotiate a testing period on the final morning to help secure a draw.

Hogg tears through Hampshire

Scorecard
Kyle Hogg became the first bowler to take seven wickets in an innings this season as runaway County Championship Division One leaders Lancashire moved a step nearer their fifth win in six matches. Hogg finished with figures of 7 for 28 from 14 overs as struggling Hampshire were made to follow after ending their first innings on 133 in reply to Lancashire’s 328.Hampshire’s second stint at the crease was little better – save for Benny Howell’s unbeaten half-century – as they lost half their order inside 52 overs to reach 163 for 5 at stumps, still 32 runs behind heading into day three. On an uncharacteristically lively Rose Bowl wicket, Hogg, who had only previously taken five or more wickets in an innings once in a 10-year career, encountered little resistance as Hampshire lost their last seven batsmen for 35.After Howell had fallen for a three-ball duck to Hogg, fellow opener Jimmy Adams (35) and Johann Myburgh (28) steadied the ship. Their removal – both falling to Oliver Newby – left the hosts on 98 for 3 but with little sign of the implosion to come. Hogg suddenly found pace and movement at the Pavilion end and in quick order removed Neil McKenzie (16), James Vince (12), Dimitri Mascarenhas (1), Dominic Cork (0), Nic Pothas (9) and Danny Briggs (2).The medium-pacer’s remarkable spell brought him six wickets for six runs in just 28 balls, while Sajid Mahmood finished off Hampshire by dismissing Kabir Ali for nine. Lancashire captain Mark Chilton, sensing victory inside two days, had no hesitation in enforcing the follow-on.This time Adams was quickly out, caught down the legside by wicketkeeper Gareth Cross on 14, while Myburgh was snared at first slip off Newby for 31. McKenzie struck eight fours in an enterprising 35 before being trapped lbw trying to turn Mahmood through midwicket. This left Hampshire 116 runs adrift but the crisis brought together French-born Howell and the maturing Vince, and together they delayed Lancashire in a fourth-wicket stand worth 82 runs. But just before the close Mahmood returned to the attack to have Vince caught at the wicket for 39 and then to remove nightwatchman Briggs (1) in the final over. Howell was still there at stumps, on 68 not out from 157 balls.

O Flamengo estreia no Campeonato Brasileiro no sábado diante do Vitória.

Haryana pip Services on net run-rate

A round-up of the eleventh day of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Twenty20 tournament

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Oct-2010North ZoneHarshad Khadiwale’s aggressive half-century took Maharashtra to the knock-outs with a five-run win against Baroda•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Delhi crushed Services’ hopes of qualifying for the knock-out stage with an easy nine-wicket victory at the Palam B Ground. Delhi overhauled Services’ score of 124 with 18 balls to spare, leaving them tied on points with Haryana, but behind on net run-rate in the North Zone table.Medium-pacer Kapil Yadav took 3 for 18 for Delhi, while opener Irfan Khan was the only Services’ batsman to get going, with a score of 46 off 39 balls. The rest of Delhi’s attack supported Yadav well as Services finished with a below-par score. Opener Puneet Bisht set the tone for Delhi’s chase with 24 off 16 balls, and after his exit Chetan Sharma settled down to finish unbeaten on 65. Mithun Manhas stayed with Sharma as Delhi eased home by nine wickets, giving them a spotless record going into the next round.Haryana qualified past the group stage despite a nine-wicket loss to Himachal Pradesh in their final group match at the Palam A Ground. Choosing to bat, Haryana stumbled to 14 for 4 in the fifth over before a lower-order recovery took the score into triple figures. Left-arm spinner Kuldeep Diwan finished with 3 for 25, while Ashok Thakur supported him with 2 for 19, leaving Himachal chasing 109 for a win.Sangram Singh scored 58 of 57 balls, and his 92-run opening stand with Manvinder Bisla put the result beyond doubt, but Haryana managed to qualify for the next round on net run-rate courtesy of Delhi beating Services by a similar margin. Himachal finished fourth in the North Zone table.Punjab beat Jammu & Kashmir by 29 runs in the battle of the North Zone also-rans, at the Palam A Ground in Delhi. Punjab chose to bat and were sent on their way by a 40-run opening stand off 4.2 overs between Jaskaran Singh and Sarul Kanwar. Ravi Inder Singh, Amit Parashar and Bipul Sharma ensured that the momentum was maintained as Punjab surged to a strong score. Abid Nabi suffered the most, conceding 40 runs in his four overs as J&K faced a chase of 141.Opener Arshad Bhatt held one end up with a steady 43, but the steady loss of wickets at the other end meant that J&K gradually lost steam. Seamer Manpreet Gony finished with 3 for 17 as Punjab closed the J&K innings at 111 for 6.West ZoneBaroda frittered away a dominant position against Maharashtra and the chance to make the knock-out stage at the Reliance Stadium in Vadodara, falling short of the target of 153 by five runs, after being 99 for 1 at one stage. Pinal Shah’s half-century got Baroda off to a strong start, and they needed 54 off 53 deliveries with nine wickets remaining. However, offspinner Ganesh Gaikwad ran through the middle order, taking 4 for 28, including the wicket of Pinal for 61. With 12 needed off the last over, Baroda lost two wickets to finish at 147 for 7.Openers Harshad Khadiwale and Nikhil Paradkar had smashed 109 in 71 balls to give Maharashtra a solid platform. Khadiwale was the more aggressive of the duo, slamming 59 off 34 balls while Paradkar made 49 off 40. But Baroda’s spinners picked up six wickets as Maharashtra’s middle order collapsed to 131 for 7. They recovered somewhat to post 152, which proved just enough to take them through.Left-arm seamer Jaidev Unadkat’s incisive three-wicket burst gave Saurashtra a three-run win in a low-scoring scrap against Gujarat in Vadodara. Defending a paltry 89 on a pitch where run-scoring was not easy, Saurashtra’s fast-bowling attack, led by Unadkat, struck at regular intervals to reduce Gujarat to 56 for 5. A watchful 18-run stand between Rujul Bhatt and Rohit Dahiya brought Gujarat back in the game, but Unadkat removed both off successive balls before a spate of run-outs left the hosts three short.Siddharth Trivedi was the main threat when Saurashtra batted, as he picked two of three early wickets that left the visitors gasping at 3 for 3. Shitanshu Kotak and Jaydev Shah then featured in the best partnership of the game, but Saurasthra stumbled again following their 41-run alliance. No. 8 Sandip Maniar’s late onslaught lifted them from 64 for 8 to their final score of 89, which in the end analysis proved just enough for Saurashtra’s first win in the tournament, while Gujarat finished their engagements winless.Central ZoneMadhya Pradesh surged into the top spot of Central Zone with a hard-fought nine-run win against Railways who were bowled out with one over to spare in Jaipur. Needing a win to progress to the knock-out stage, MP began well with Naman Ojha anchoring their innings with a boundary-filled 49 off 38 balls. Sanjay Bangar slowed down proceedings in the middle overs with a tight spell of 3 for 22, but Amarjeet Singh went on the attack in the end overs, smashing five fours and two sixes in his 37 off 15 balls.Railways’ chase was derailed early as opening bowlers TP Sudhindra and Anand Rajan reduced them to 40 for 6 in seven overs. However, a late counterattack led by tail-enders DP Salvi, Shadab Khan and Murali Kartik brought them roaring back into the game. Kartik and Shadab lifted the score from 81 for 8 in the 13th over to 139 in the 19th. With 10 needed from eight balls, Kartik was run-out before Amarjeet, who had bled 40 runs in his first 3.5 overs, finished the game by castling Shadab with his last ball.Amit Paunikar’s unbeaten half-century took Vidarbha to the knock-outs with a 34-run win against Rajasthan at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. Paunikar didn’t let the loss of two wickets in the first two overs bother him, and added 65 runs in 43 deliveries with Ravi Jangid. After Jangid fell for a quick 36, Paunikar carried on, hitting three sixes and six fours in his unbeaten 78 off 56. Vidarbha surged to 169 as 36 runs came off the last three overs.Rajasthan began well, with Dishant Yagnik hammering three sixes in his 36 off 22 balls to lift the score to 49 in the sixth over. Aakash Chopra’s steady 42 kept them in the chase, taking them to 110 for 2 with six overs to go. However, offspinner Akshay Wakhare took two wickets in three balls to stem the scoring, and also effected two run-outs to turn the tables. Rajasthan managed only 25 runs off the last six overs as Vidharbha completed their third win in four group games.

Celtic must axe Barkas and Ajeti

Celtic saw many players come and go out of the club during their previous summer and winter transfer windows as Ange Postecoglou made his mark on the squad.

Now that the next summer window is on the horizon, this will once again give the 56-year-old the chance to make any further changes to the squad that he sees fit.

In terms of which players that could or should be moved out of the club, we feel that the duo of goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas and striker Albian Ajeti should not be wearing Celtic shirts next season.

With a combined total of eight SPFL appearances between them this season, this shows just how far down the pecking order they are.

Looking at Barkas, the shot-stopper has only made two appearances for the Bhoys across all competitions in this campaign, conceding a goal in each of them.

The 27-year-old was slammed by Michael Stewart for his “catastrophic” error against FC Midtjylland that led to Celtic drawing 1-1 against them in their Champions League qualifying match back in July.

As for Ajeti, the striker has only started seven of the 17 games he’s appeared in, scoring three goals and providing one assist in the process.

Back in March, Frank McAvennie claimed that it was “unbelievable” that the attacker was still taking money from the club as a result of his dire performances.

When the Switzerland international has been able to get on the pitch in the SPFL, his performances haven’t done much to add cause for concern for the likes of Kyogo Furuhashi or Giorgos Giakoumakis in terms of their place in the side.

According to WhoScored, the centre-forward has only been able to earn himself a rather disappointing overall season rating of 6.47/10, making him one of the lowest-rated players in Postecoglou’s squad to start more than one league game in this campaign.

Moving forward, if Celtic have the chance to offload the duo in the summer, then they should absolutely do it without hesitation.

If they can then pick up some money in the process, this would be an ideal situation for them as the disastrous duo are not offering much to the team as things stand apart from rinsing the club financially.

Celtic: Mikey Johnston suffers fresh injury

Celtic winger Mikey Johnston has suffered a fresh injury and won’t feature against Bodo/Glimt this evening, The Daily Record report.

The Lowdown: Johnston’s struggles

Johnston has endured a number of injury woes in recent years, missing 68 games in the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons.

The 22-year-old, who Callum McGregor called ‘brilliant’, has struggled to break into Ange Postecoglou’s first-choice XI, starting just three Scottish Premiership games all season.

He was picked from the off in Celtic’s Scottish Cup clash with Raith Rovers on the weekend, however, he was forced off after 55 minutes with a new injury.

The Latest: New injury

As relayed by The Daily Record’s Mark Pirie, Postecoglou confirmed that Johnston is set to be out ‘for a little while’ with an ankle sprain.

Pirie described it as a nightmare blow for the winger, who has been included in the club’s 25-man Europa Conference League squad.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-21/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Summer move inevitable?

Johnston was wanted by Aberdeen on loan late in the January transfer window, and you’d expect that a summer move could be on the cards for the Scot.

He could benefit from playing regular football when he is fully fit and is still under contract at Parkhead until 2025.

Therefore, a season-long loan exit this summer could be best for all involved, and a positive campaign in 2022/23 could persuade Postecoglou and co to keep hold of the forward in the long run.

Leeds: David Anderson drops Kalvin Phillips update

Kalvin Phillips has told Leeds United that he wants to sign a new contract at Elland Road, David Anderson reports.

The Lowdown: Villa links

The 26-year-old has once again been linked with a move to Aston Villa in recent weeks.

Villa, who tried to sign Phillips back in 2019, are reportedly leading the race for the England international this summer and are willing to pay £60m for his services.

[freshpress-quiz id=“383507″]

Phillips would also be offered a huge salary worth around £10m a year in the Midlands, but it seems as if he now wants to remain in Yorkshire.

The Latest: Positive talks

Anderson took to Twitter on Tuesday afternoon to provide a ‘big boost for Leeds’ regarding Phillips.

The midfielder has reportedly held talks with the board, which of course includes Andrea Radrizzani and the San Francisco 49ers group, and informed them that he wants to put pen to paper on a new deal this summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-40/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Huge…

Phillips starred under former manager Marcelo Bielsa and looks set to be key in a new role for Jesse Marsch. The American has gone with a double pivot at Elland Road and only has four central midfielders on the books.

It is an area of the pitch that could do with bolstering in the summer, so knowing that their star midfielder wants to stay is massive. You could also say that a new deal for Phillips is well overdue, with his last extension coming in the club’s promotion campaign back in 2019/20 – he has since gone on to become England’s player of the year.
