We're more of a working-class team now – Hussey

Michael Hussey does not believe Australia’s “working class” cricketers can be considered the best one-day side in the world

Alex Brown at Trent Bridge14-Sep-2009Michael Hussey does not believe Australia’s “working class” cricketers can be considered the best one-day side in the world, despite moving within two ratings points of the top-ranked South Africans in the ICC standings. Having won eight of their last nine matches against Pakistan, Scotland and England, the Australians could reclaim the No. 1 ODI ranking with victories in the double-header at Trent Bridge and the series finale at Chester-le-Street; results that would seal an unprecedented 7-0 series sweep over Andrew Strauss’s men.Hussey, though, insists that only a strong showing at the Champions Trophy will determine whether this reconfigured and recalibrated Australian side is truly worthy of recognition as the world’s pre-eminent ODI force. Further obstacles lie ahead in the form of a seven-match one-day series in India, and home series against West Indies and Pakistan, prompting Hussey to reserve judgement on Australia’s place in the international pecking order.”We have got a lot of new faces around the squad but realistically I think we’ve got a lot of work to do before we can honestly claim that we’re the best one-day team in the world,” Hussey said. “It’s definitely a motivating factor for the team to try and be the best team in the world, but I don’t think that’s where we see ourselves at the moment. We’re building a new team, a new environment, a new culture and trying to take bits and pieces from the past regimes and trying to improve on those as well.”We’ll probably get a better idea after the Champions Trophy where we probably sit. Similarly, with where we sit in the Test match rankings, we had a pretty good idea after playing South Africa home and away and obviously playing England in England. We probably have a fair idea of where we sit in the Test match arena.”Australia and England began the current ODI series ranked third and fourth respectively on the ICC table, but four consecutive victories to the tourists have changed the landscape dramatically. Ricky Ponting’s side moved into a tie for second-place with India as of Sunday, while England plummeted to seventh behind Pakistan, Sri Lanka and New Zealand. Short of a dramatic turnaround in the final three matches in Nottingham and Durham, it is difficult to see England figuring at the Champions Trophy. For Australia, reclamation of the No. 1 ODI ranking will not erase the bitter memories of a tour that has witnessed a calamitous World Twenty20 campaign and an Ashes series defeat, but it will imbue a sense of confidence in the younger members of the squad. Hussey considers himself a generational bridge between those players and the that won the past three consecutive World Cups, and is hopeful Australia’s current side can continue the winning ways, if not the sheer dominance, of their forebears.”I think we’re more of a working class team now,” he said. “When I first started playing it was an unbelievable team to be involved with. There was so much confidence, there was so much presence about the team. Basically, you did expect to win every single game and win it well. We had so many match winners, that if Hayden didn’t come off, it’d be Gilchrist or it’d be Ponting, or McGrath would get the wickets. It was expected and it’s generally what happened.”Being part of this team, everyone has a specific job they’ve got to do and we all have to be doing our jobs if we’re going to win and win well. We don’t rely just on one player to make all the runs or to be the match-winner. We’ve all got to chip in and do our bit.”I actually get on well with the younger generation. They are different, but it’s good because I can learn a bit off them as well. I am available for anyone who wants to chat at any time. And it goes both ways. I like to chat to them about computer games and stuff – which I know absolutely know nothing about – which hopefully can help my kids.”Never before has an Australian side whitewashed a bilateral seven-game one-day international series, and Ponting is making strides to ensure complacency does not take hold in the final week of the tour. With the limited overs series sealed at Lord’s on Saturday, the Australian captain impressed upon his players the need to drive home their advantage and rediscover their ruthless edge ahead of the Champions Trophy.”Ricky’s been on our hammer already basically about trying to maintain our momentum,” Hussey said. “We’ve also identified some areas we need to improve. We want to finish this summer well here in England and it’s a really good lead-up to the Champions Trophy as well.”I’m sure [a whitewash of England] is a motivating thing for us but we’ve just got to worry about this game really. If we don’t win this one then that’s out the window. It’s been great to win this series but we want to keep the momentum going forward leading into the Champions Trophy. We still think we can improve a lot and we’re going to have to improve a lot more to be right up there in this Champions Trophy.”

Smallbone may hand Saints big injury boost

After securing their first Premier League win of the season over the weekend with a 1-0 victory against Leeds United, Southampton have another big game on the horizon with Burnley making the trip to St. Mary’s to try and get their first win of the campaign.

Southampton are set to be without James Ward-Prowse as a result of the three-game ban he picked up during the Saints’ 3-1 defeat against Chelsea before the recent international break, as well as defender Jack Stephens after he picked up a serious knee injury during the club’s 0-0 draw against Manchester City.

Thus, Ralph Hasenhuttl will have to make do with the players he currently has at his disposal as they try and grab their second win of the season.

However, it seems as though there could be one positive thrown their way ahead of the match at the weekend that could be a big boost for the team.

What’s the latest?

Saints midfielder Will Smallbone recently played the full 90 minutes of Southampton’s U23 match against Wolves, the first time he has done so since he damaged his ACL back in January.

As a product of Southampton’s youth academy, Smallbone made his senior debut for the Saints back in January 2020 during a 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town in the FA Cup after working his way through their youth teams.

Specifically, the 21-year-old, who is currently valued at £1.8m according to Transfermarkt, has made 52 appearances for the U18 side, scoring six goals and providing seven assists, 41 appearances for Southampton’s B side, scoring seven goals and providing five assists along the way.

Smallbone also has 13 senior appearances under his belt, scoring once and adding two assists to his career tally, showing he is a very useful midfielder in terms of creating and scoring goals.

This also highlights just how devastating the injury he suffered was given how promising he’d become for the club beforehand.

Taking all of this into account, we feel that it would be massive, not just for Smallbone, but for the Southampton fans who would be thrilled to see him potentially get back on the pitch, especially considering how long he was out of action for.

Looking ahead to the Burnley match, if Smallbone is fully fit enough to play a part in the game against Sean Dyche’s side, we feel that it would be good for him to get some time on the pitch, but not too much considering the severity of his injury so it would therefore probably be best for Hasenhuttl to gently ease him back into it rather than throw him in from the start.

Lahore attack suspect arrested

Pakistan police have arrested a man suspected of being involved in the attack on Sri Lankan cricketers

Cricinfo staff17-Jun-2009Pakistan police have arrested a man suspected of being involved in the attack on Sri Lankan cricketers in Lahore on March 3 earlier this year. Five cricketers, including Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara, were injured in the attack which killed six security men and two civilians.Pervez Rathor, Lahore’s police chief, said seven attackers had been identified and one had been arrested. “We have broken up a Punjabi Taliban network and we have arrested an attacker who shot dead a policeman,” Rathor told reporters. The suspect, who police identified as Zubair, also known as Naik Mohammad, appeared at the news conference in Lahore, the capital of the Punjab province in Pakistan, with a blanket over his head to hide his identity. The Sri Lankan team was in Pakistan for a two-Test tour which, as a result of the attack, was terminated abruptly. The attack had immediate repercussions for cricket in Pakistan, as its status as an international sporting venue came under doubt. The ICC subsequently decided to strip the country of its right to host the 2011 World Cup.

Kane could now sign new deal at Spurs

Harry Kane could now be open to extending his contract with Tottenham Hotspur, with fresh talks expected with Fabio Paratici and Daniel Levy.

The Lowdown: Kane stays put over summer

Tottenham’s all-time goalscorer Kane was linked with a move away from the club over the summer, with Manchester City seeming the suitors for his signature, but a move never happened and he has returned to action for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.

After scoring 23 goals and assisting a further 14 goals last season, Kane led England to the final of the European Championships before delaying his return to training at Spurs.

However, the striker confirmed his desire to remain at the club and news has now emerged about his future at Spurs.

The Latest: Fresh talks looming

According to EuroSport, Kane could still sign a new contract at Tottenham despite having his desire to leave the club in the summer.

The article also states that Kane, who was tipped to beat every goal record in the book by former manager Jose Mourninho, rejected a fresh deal days after the striker lost to Italy in the final of the national competition, but avenues are now open for fresh terms to be discussed between club chiefs and the striker.

A deal would only be agreed if Levy welcomes the idea of inserting a release clause however, meaning Paratici and the divisive Spurs chairman may have some serious negotiating to do.

The Verdict: Long way to go

With Kane remaining at the club and Heung-Min Son extending his stay at the club, things are truly looking up for Spurs in terms of keeping their star men.

The striker, who was described as ‘unbelievable’ by Jack Grealish recently, has scored 223 goals in 340 appearances for Tottenham, a remarkable record, and he will be hoping Levy will consider his history in mind when concluding a deal.

Whilst the deal may mean a pay rise for Kane, Paratici’s thinking of keeping hold of Kane for this season and maybe the following is vital if they are to return to the top six of the Premier League.

Everton transfer revelation on Kluiters

Many Everton fans have been left raging over a transfer revelation on Luuk Kluiters.

Writing on his Instagram story (via The Toffee Blues), the central defender revealed that he made a deal with the Goodison Park faithful a couple of weeks ago, but was not able to get a work permit.

That meant that the deal was abandoned, and he has now signed for LOSC Lille in Ligue 1 instead.

Supporters never like to hear that their club was close to a signing before it collapsed, and it certainly seems like the Merseyside outfit have missed out on a target Rafael Benitez wanted.

Kluiters has played in a total of eight games over all competitions for AZ Alkmaar’s U17’s (Transfermarkt), and at just 18 years of age, the Dutchman has a lot of potential.

Carew criticises Ramdin's appointment

Joey Carew, the former West Indies chief selector, has criticised the appointment of Denesh Ramdin as vice-captain for the New Zealand ODIs

Joey Carew, the former West Indies chief selector, has criticised the appointment of Denesh Ramdin as vice-captain for the New Zealand ODIs. Carew, who served on the WICB, on and off, for roughly 20 years, said Ramdin was better off focusing on his cricket at this stage of this career.”Three years ago, Sir Vivian Richards had advocated that Denesh Ramdin would be a good choice to lead the West Indies team,” Carew told the . “With the greatest respect for Sir Viv, I could not agree with him. Now three years later, maybe his words will come to past, and once again we are given a surprise decision by the West Indies cricket administrators.”Ramdin was elevated to be Chris Gayle’s deputy for the remainder of West Indies’ tour after Ramnaresh Sarwan stepped down from the post on the eve of the team’s opening tour match against Auckland. “In my opinion, Ramdin needs to concentrate more on his cricket now and I would not think of side-tracking him with the responsibilities of the leadership,” said Carew.Ramdin, 23, was not part of the team that lost 3-0 to Pakistan in Abu Dhabi last month or the three-nation ODI series in Canada, involving the hosts and Bermuda, before that.Former Trinidad & Tobago and West Indies offspinner Rangy Nanan felt Ramdin could benefit from the added responsibility of leadership. “I am elated for Denesh. He has always shown that he has the potential to lead, being a former West Indies Under-19 captain,” said Nanan. “I hope this responsibility will benefit his career and work to the advantage of the team.”

Gayle backs bowlers in even battle

Chris Gayle is optimistic about his team’s prospects ahead of the two-match series

West Indies’ preparations for the first Test in Dunedin, starting on Thursday, have been hampered by the poor weather, but captain Chris Gayle is optimistic about his team’s prospects ahead of the two-match series.”We are up against a good team and you have to say it is even-stevens. The two teams are evenly matched and these Test matches will be very vital for us. We are eagerly looking forward to the matches,” Gayle said. “We are here and we have a job to do. We are committed and we will be looking to put our plans in place and get the better of New Zealand.”West Indies are currently ranked No. 7 in the ICC Test rankings, a place above New Zealand, who slipped to eighth after their 2-0 loss in Australia. The visitors, though, may be a bit undercooked; they have had only one practice game heading into the Tests, and steady rain forced them to train indoors on Tuesday. The conditions are unlikely to improve on Wednesday. However, Gayle was upbeat over the team’s bowling attack, and has backed them to fire against a under performing New Zealand batting line-up. “We have quite a few fast bowlers and I trust them to get the job done. We will be looking to set them back early and look to move on from there.”As usual, Gayle was straightforward with his responses and said the batsmen will have to battle hard in bowler-friendly conditions. “Whatever comes across we have to deal with it. The ball will swing and most of us have been playing for sometime now so we have to use our skill and experience to deal with the New Zealand bowlers. It is nothing new … we just have to face what they send down.”Despite the conditions, Gayle is unlikely to curb his attacking instinct at the top of the order. “I am just taking it step by step, but at the same time I plan to be myself out there. I am maturing and there is more responsibility but the mindset will be to play positive cricket.”
