West Ham are right to put their trust in David Martin amid Roberto’s calamity

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

West Ham United are going to give David Martin a chance to show what he can do in goal, according to Football Insider.

Manuel Pellegrini is said to be ready to trial him in what is regarded as the first-team during international break training, and the view is that he will start against Tottenham Hotspur if he impresses.

This is the correct decision from the Hammers manager, as he simply can’t afford to blindly stick with Roberto after all of the mistakes he has made.

The shocking attempt at a punch against Burnley and terrible positioning for Newcastle’s second are among the most obvious errors, but there have been many more.

They have been costly for the team, who are now on a run of seven games without a win in all competitions, which has seen them drop down to 16th in the league.

When thinking of Martin’s on-pitch actions, many will likely think of his mistake for Millwall against Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup last season.

However, Phil Parkes has said the Englishman should not be judged on that moment alone, as reported by Claret & Hugh: “I think the manager needs to make sure that Alvin’s son Dave Martin is between the posts against Spurs.

“Ok, we know he had a bad game in a Cup match on television but before that, he had performed impeccably and has to be a better bet than the Spanish lad.”

The Englishman played 10 league games for Millwall last season, keeping 4 clean sheets and conceded 9 goals.

Considering Roberto has conceded 12 times in 6 Premier League games, it is definitely worth giving Martin a chance after the international break.

Sheffield United: Fans don’t want Kevin McCabe to appeal ownership decision

It has been confirmed that former Sheffield United owner Kevin McCabe’s lawyers are seeking leave to appeal a court ruling from September which granted full ownership of the club to his former business partner Prince Abdullah bin Mosaad bin Abdulaziz al Saud (via @JamesShield1).

McCabe and Prince Abdullah went head-to-head in a lengthy court battle for sole ownership, with the ruling going in favour of the latter (BBC Sport).

Mr Justice Fancourt ruled that McCabe must sell his stake to his former business partner for £5 million.

The lifelong Sheffield United fan was left disappointed by the ruling, and expressed his “deep misgivings about the suitability” of the Saudi prince as the Blades’ custodian (via BBC Sport).

It looked as though that was that however, and that the ownership battle had come to a conclusion. However, that now appears not to be the case as McCabe is set to lodge an appeal against the decision.

This is likely to mean that the battle for control of the club drags on even longer, something which most Sheffield United supporters are not happy about and don’t want. Here is what some said on Twitter after finding out that McCabe was set to appeal…

Sheffield United fans, should Kevin McCabe accept defeat in his ownership battle with Prince Abdullah? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…

PFA Bristol Street Motors Fans’ Player of the Month award – Premier League nominees for October

With the passing of Halloween, the spookiest period of the campaign is now over, and it was a month that certainly saw a few Premier League defenders receive a fright from some of the division’s best forwards.

Dangerous attackers such as Jamie Vardy and Ayoze Perez both hit hat-tricks in Leicester’s 9-0 win over Southampton on 25th October, ensuring that the Saints suffered an early Halloween scare six days before the big day.

Elsewhere, Crystal Palace maintained their impressive campaign so far with a 2-2 draw against Arsenal, a game in which Granit Xhaka made the headlines for all the wrong reasons after his unprofessional gestures to the Emirates crowd.

Forget individual outbursts and collective efforts for a moment though – let’s take a look at the individuals nominated for the PFA Bristol Street Motors Fans’ Player of the Month award for October…

Jack Grealish

Aston Villa’s captain enjoyed an impressive October in which he started to finally look at home in the Premier League.

Grealish netted a goal in the 5-1 demolition of Norwich at Carrow Road, while also proving to be the decisive influence in the 2-1 win over Brighton at Villa Park – the Villans No.10 scored the equaliser, and then set up Matt Targett’s stoppage-time winner.

David Silva

The experienced Manchester City playmaker scored two goals in three Premier League games throughout October.

Silva scored the opening goal in the 2-0 win over Crystal Palace, and then found the back of the net once again in a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium.

Ricardo Pereira

The Portuguese right-back has enjoyed an excellent campaign so far, continuing his fine 2018/19 form that saw him record eight goal involvements in the league.

Pereira didn’t actually score or assist in October, although he played a starring role in the 2-1 win over Burnley and in the aforementioned 9-0 win at St Mary’s.

Adama Traore

The mercurial Wolves wide man helped his side remain unbeaten throughout October, with some vital contributions.

Traore, formerly of Barcelona, scored both goals in the eye-catching 2-0 win over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, and also played every minute of the following 1-1 draws against Southampton and Newcastle.

Jamie Vardy

Leicester’s No.9 scored his seventh, eight and ninth Premier League goals of the campaign in the rout over Southampton, and also netted the winning goal in the 2-1 win over Burnley before the trip to St Mary’s.

Vardy now has nine goals in 10 league appearances this season.

Christian Pulisic

The USA international impressed throughout October for Chelsea, to say the least.

Pulisic – a USA international – started the month with an assist for Michy Batshuayi in the 4-1 win against Southampton, before playing a cameo role in the 1-0 win over Newcastle at Stamford Bridge.

His most impressive showing came in the last league outing of the month though, when he scored a perfect hat-trick at Turf Moor in the 4-0 win over Burnley.

Arsenal fans all want the same man to replace Unai Emery

Arsenal fans want Ajax boss Erik ten Hag to replace Unai Emery at The Emirates.

The Gunners are currently fifth in the Premier League following their 1-0 defeat to Sheffield United on Monday.

A number of supporters have already grown tired of Emery’s management, having seen their side finish fifth last season too.

Indeed, #EmeryOut trended on Twitter following the loss at Bramall Lane and fans have already begun speculating as to who could take over from the ex-PSG boss – prompted by a tweet from a fan – with ten Hag a popular choice.

The 49-year-old has been in charge at Ajax since 2017 and oversaw their run to the Champions League semi-finals last season, where Tottenham Hotspur dramatically beat them.

He also won the Eredivisie in 2018/19, guiding the likes of Matthijs De Ligt, Frenkie De Jong and Dusan Tadic to glory; De Ligt and De Jong now play for Juventus and Barcelona respectively.

And fans think he should be the man to take the reins if Emery is ever given the boot.

Take a look at the best of the reaction below!

West Brom’s Nathan Ferguson has saved the club millions of pounds in defence

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

West Brom return to league action this weekend as the Championship’s top dogs as they sit first in the division, narrowly ahead of Midlands rivals Nottingham Forest on goal difference.

Slaven Bilic’s men have suffered only the one loss, which came just a week before the international break took over as Leeds United defeated them 1-0 at Elland Road.

They responded just a few days later with an impressive 4-2 victory against Cardiff City, as the likes of Charlie Austin and Romaine Sawyers netted their first goals in a Baggies shirt.

The Croatian boss has very much brought life back to the Hawthorns after the club were left hurting by playoff defeat in May at the hands of eventual winners Aston Villa.

Albion had no manager and a squad that had the potential to be decimated as Dwight Gayle returned to his parent club, while the likes of Jay Rodriguez, Craig Dawson and Salomon Rondon were all sold.

Bilic made measures to replace those departing figures, and the business he and technical director Luke Dowling conducted has been nothing short of impressive.

Semi Ajayi has proven to be a bargain at £1.3m while the enigmatic loan duo of Grady Diangana and Matheus Pereira have quite literally lit up the west Midlands with their performances, combining for six goals and seven assists this campaign.

But the smartest of moves could well have come from within their own academy as Bilic promoted promising duo Kyle Edwards and Nathan Ferguson to the senior squad.

West Brom’s academy is widely regarded as one of the best in the country, so it’s no surprise to see players making the step up, but none could have predicted the impact that young Ferguson has had.

The 19-year-old started out as a centre-back in the youth team, but made his senior debut at right-back and has since started to make the left-back position his own while Kieran Gibbs faced time out through injury.

His versatility may prove key throughout the season if they can genuinely mount a promotion bid this season – and the best part is he didn’t cost the club a penny.

Defenders do not come cheap these days.

Krystian Bielik cost Derby County a potential £10m while Tomas Kalas reportedly set Bristol City back £8m. Then, if you take a look at the Premier League, Manchester United spent £80m on Harry Maguire and £50m on Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

This masterstroke move has literally saved Albion millions of pounds – who knows how much they would have had to pay for a player that is as versatile and young as Ferguson.

Marcelo Bielsa must maintain shrewd approach in promotion pursuit with Leeds United

[ad_pod ]

The words injury blow and Leeds United have become rather synonymous with each other in the last year.

Marcelo Bielsa may have turned Leeds back into a side with swagger but there is still one huge problem and it may just have another colossal say in their bid for promotion.

Before Tuesday night’s defeat against Stoke in the Carabao Cup, the Whites were unbeaten this season. Indeed they still are in league action, sitting top of the Championship, but the injuries are still there for Leeds.

At the moment they’re missing Luke Ayling and Tyler Roberts, two individuals who have yet to feature in any form of football this term.

Players like Stuart Dallas, who scored against Stoke, and Adam Forshaw, who has completed 91.8% of his passes, have stepped up adequately but the fact remains that lingering fitness issues are still a concern.

If you were to walk into the Thorp Arch training ground, it would probably feel like an elephant in the room.

In mid-February last season, Leeds were staring down the barrel of a campaign that had 28 separate injury issues and a total of 140 games missed.

By early-April, that had risen to 31 issues. The number of games missed sat on 165 and that wasn’t even including those who were set to be ruled out for the season.

The sheer volume of injuries was nigh on absurd and it’s understandable if there were yet more worries about this in 2019/20.

As a result, a cunning policy that Bielsa adopted last Saturday needs to be implemented throughout the campaign.

Liam Cooper suffered an injury against Brentford on Pontus Jansson’s return to Elland Road and although it was a knock, aggravating an ankle issue, the Argentine decided to be cautious with his fitness, ultimately not selecting him for Leeds’ clash with Stoke in the Championship the following week.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, he told reporters: “He could have played today, but he wasn’t at 100 per cent.”

And therein lies what now must become a common theme in Leeds’ season. If a player isn’t fit enough and is a remote risk, they shouldn’t play.

Whatever Bielsa does in training clearly has an effect on his players and the very fact that there had been 31 issues by April last season tells the story.

There is more than just bad luck at play here.

That’s why he needs to be cunning and continue to use this policy going forward, especially if they’re targeting promotion.

Cooper was a major player for Leeds in 2018/19 and was named in the PFA Team of the Year. However, despite his impressive start to this season, conceding just twice alongside Ben White, he was left out against the Potters.

This was a sensible decision and one which proves that Bielsa is learning the lessons from last term.

It was a horrible campaign as far as injuries were concerned and it undoubtedly impacted on their failed promotion dream.

Knowing when to take risks separates the good from the great managers but at this early stage in the season there is no compulsion to gamble.

If a player isn’t 100% up to the task they should be left on the substitutes bench or at home until they have fully recovered.

This might be more difficult given Leeds’ slim squad but it’s still a possibility with some of the young players they possess.

After all, it appears Leeds are developing Leif Davis from a left back into a central defender because of the sparsity of their options. He played there against Salford and Stoke in the EFL Cup.

It might be that this season we start to see a few more of the Whites’ big guns left out on occasions when perhaps they are just about fit enough to start the game.

The Championship is a strenuous division and after all of the issues they had during Bielsa’s first year at the helm, it would be sensible to rest star names when necessary.

With Cooper missing out last Saturday, that was a fine example of what will need to be done.

The 64-year-old must take this into consideration more often to ensure Leeds are well-placed for promotion.

Leeds winger Jack Harrison must improve to vindicate Marcelo Bielsa’s faith

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Some of Leeds’ players have had rather indifferent starts to the new campaign despite their so far unbeaten run.

Patrick Bamford scored against Bristol City but then spurned six opportunities against Nottingham Forest but the inconsistency didn’t stop there.

Jack Harrison was another who netted in that match against the Robins but was particularly poor, despite showing glimpses, versus Forest.

The Whites ultimately drew that game 1-1 and therefore, improvement is needed.

On the chalkboard

Harrison, who can sign permanently next summer after arriving on another loan from Manchester City is a dangerous player on his day.

The fact he contributed to seven goals last season proves there is end product in there.

However, after threatening to start the season in tremendous form, he stalled against Forest. Marcelo Bielsa has indicated that his side will be the same this weekend so with that in mind, he must improve in order to vindicate the Argentine’s trust.

Last Saturday, the 22-year-old’s pass success rate was one of the most negative aspects of his game. He completed just 65.4%, being accurate with 17 of the 26 balls he attempted to play to his teammates.

The winger managed two key passes but there was a lack of drive and conviction to his performance which was summed up by the solitary dribble he managed.

Considering the 5 foot 9 midfielder only really burst forward once, it was particularly alarming that he was so careless in possession.

Over the time he was on the pitch, he was dispossessed three times, as well as having three unsuccessful touches before being replaced by Ezgjan Alioski.

Watch Leeds United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

After missing out against Salford, this is one aspect that he’ll have to particularly improve in as the Whites aim to bounce back from a draw against Sabri Lamouchi’s men.

Bielsa has shown trust by saying he’ll select the same team but Harrison must become more careful if Leeds want to achieve all three points.

Helder Costa is currently waiting in the wings and if the former New York City man throws in similar displays, it might not be too long before he is dislodged.

Rangers should still swoop for Ryan Kent, says Noel Whelan

[ad_pod ]

Former Leeds ace Noel Whelan has told Football Insider how good a signing he thinks Ryan Kent would be for Rangers.

What’s he said?

The 22-year-old has been told by Jurgen Klopp that he won’t get another chance out on loan, meaning a permanent move away from Anfield is likely this summer. As a result, the ex-Aberdeen man has tipped the Liverpool winger to be a brilliant bit of business if he were to go back to Steven Gerrard’s side.

“Kent would be a brilliant signing for Rangers or Leeds,” Whelan told Football Insider.

“There’s no chance of him playing regularly at Liverpool, there is just too much attacking depth, so he really needs to move on this summer.

“At Rangers, he would be a standout player. He developed well last season and showed he can be a regular matchwinner.

“He is quick, technically good, can beat a man, dribble, manipulate the ball, can play on both flanks or in the number 10 role, and creates and scores goals.”

His high praise of the wide-man has been reciprocated by many in Scotland, with Kent picking up the Young Player of the Year award last season while on loan at Ibrox.

Despite the club’s clear interest in the player and him seemingly now becoming available for a permanent transfer, there’s no guarantee that the deal will go ahead.

The stumbling blocks

The stars seem to be aligning for a return to Ibrox, but Kent to Rangers is far from a done deal.

Firstly, the reported price of £8m by BBC Sport would be the third-highest in the Light Blues’ history if went through. With the club’s record buy since promotion back to the top flight being £3.5m for Filip Helander, it would go against the grain of their recent activity.

Secondly, with Leeds United in the hunt for the winger, per The Scottish Sun, Gerrard faces tricky opposition to bring his starlet back to the club. The prospect of playing under Marcelo Bielsa must be intriguing, with the Argentine being cited by many of the game’s most prominent figures as an inspiration.

Lastly, Gerrard has already brought in four new wingers to the club this summer. Sheyi Ojo, Jordan Jones, Greg Stewart and Jake Hastie didn’t cost a penny but will have taken a dent out of the wage bill, meaning that the funds could be restricted for the already expensive deal for the winger.

While there are some promising signs that Kent will be a Rangers player, fans shouldn’t hold their breath on account of Whelan’s comments.

With the west London side currently under a transfer embargo for this window and the one after (per Sky Sports News), the Blues have been heavily restricted in their transfer dealings this summer.

With the departure of Eden Hazard to Real Madrid occurring this summer as well (per BBC Sport), the ban has complicated things heading into a new footballing campaign, and yet, fans are still excited about what Lampard can bring to Chelsea in this new era for the London giants.

The Blues defeated Barcelona in Japan 2-1 and were recently on the winning end of an entertaining 5-3 win against Red Bull Salzburg, with new signing Christian Pulisic grabbing a brace against the Austrian side.

Lampard’s reign as manager of Chelsea will be one the Blues supporters hope goes well in what is likely to be an interesting first season for the former midfield icon, but after a successful pre-season and a talented pool of players to choose from, the west London side could surprise a few in 2019/20.
