Agencies boycott Australia coverage

Leading international news agencies, Reuters, the Associated Press (AP) and Agence France Presse (AFP), are set to boycott coverage of all Cricket Australia events, including next week’s first Test between Australia and New Zealand, after a fresh dispute over accreditation terms with the board. The agencies have said they will not provide coverage of matches, training sessions or commercial events in Australia across any of their text, photographic or TV platforms because of the terms and conditions laid down by CA. The first Test in Brisbane starts next Thursday.Reuters, AP and AFP are suspending coverage of all CA events, while picture agency Getty Images will only fulfil their commercial obligations and will not provide editorial coverage of the games.”Reuters is regrettably unable to cover the upcoming cricket events in Australia, following unacceptable accreditation terms for journalists imposed by Cricket Australia,” Christoph Pleitgen, global head of news agency for Thomson Reuters, said. “As in previous instances, this decision compromises our ability to report independently and objectively, and comes at the expense of global fans and sponsors.”We would like to resume our timely, premium coverage as quickly as possible, pending a solution to the current situation.” The major issue for the agencies is CA’s policy of imposing limits on the number of updates allowed on the internet and further restrictions on distributing material to websites not owned or attached to newspapers or sports magazines. There are also concerns about some of the terms of the accreditation, which the agencies believe don’t safeguard the rights of organisations to criticise or comment. Among them is a general clause that nothing should be written which could bring the game into disrepute. This isn’t the first time the agencies have come into conflict with CA. The same situation occurred during the first Test against Sri Lanka, at Brisbane, last November when the three agencies boycotted coverage of the entire match. Last month, Reuters suspended coverage of Australia’s series in India as a result of similar “unacceptable” conditions imposed by the Indian board.Peter Young, the general manager of public affairs for CA, said negotiations were ongoing but added the majority of media outlets had signed the terms and conditions. “We’ve reached agreement with 99.9% of the media who cover cricket in Australia,” he told .”We’re comfortable that they can distribute information to the rest of the world so no cricket fan will have to miss out on anything if the agencies don’t want to cover it. In saying that, we’re still negotiating in good faith and we hope a common sense and pragmatic solution will be found. You never say never.”

Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney was shocking vs Chelsea

In the end, Arsenal’s dismal 2-0 defeat to Chelsea in the Premier League was not in the least bit surprising.

Mikel Arteta’s side were bullied by their London rivals, with goals from Romelu Lukaku and Reece James enough to consign the Gunners to two defeats from their opening two games, with a lack of attacking threat also ensuring that thhey remain goalless too.

While Pablo Mari’s tough day at the office will be the focus of much of the post-match attention, his teammate Kieran Tierney produced one of his poorest displays in an Arsenal shirt.

The Scotland international looked all at sea in trying to cope with James down the right-hand side whilst having to be his usual attacking threat going the other way.

As per Sofascore, Tierney lost 100% of his duels over the course of the game, made no tackles and lost possession 14 times – only Nicolas Pepe lost the ball on more occasions with 15, and that’s despite the Ivorian playing the full 90 minutes, unlike the Scot.

While he gave it his usual effort and commitment, Chelsea’s tactics completely caught Tierney in a muddle, with the former Celtic man providing no successful crosses as he tried to venture forward.

It was no surprise then that Chelsea eventually took advantage of Tierney’s troubles for the second goal, with Mason Mount’s run infield drawing the Scot too far inside, allowing James to burst down on the overlap and fire past Bernd Leno in the Arsenal goal.

And, writing in his post-match player ratings for The Evening Standard, Simon Collings gave him a four, saying: “One of his worst games for Arsenal. In fairness, he wasn’t given much help – but James did have a field day down his side.”

In a flat performance as an entire team, Tierney’s lacklustre display was particularly shocking, especially given just how well he performed against Brentford last week when he created a whopping six key chances.

Arteta will no doubt be feeling let down by the left-back’s performance on Sunday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Arsenal could sign their new Fabregas in this star…

Leicester City linked with Issa Diop

Leicester City could secure their ideal heir to former club captain Wes Morgan this summer after being linked with a move for West Ham United defender Issa Diop.

What’s the story?

According to the Daily Mail, the 24-year-old centre-back is on Leicester’s wish list as Brendan Rodgers looks to add strength in depth to his defence.

The Foxes have been in the market for a new central defender all summer following Morgan’s retirement, and a serious injury picked up by Wesley Fofana has further increased their need for reinforcements.

Heir to Wes Morgan

After departing boyhood club Toulouse in a £22m deal three years ago, Diop settled into life on English shores well, quickly establishing himself in the Irons’ starting XI. The 6 ft 3 gem made 33 Premier League appearances in his debut campaign, earning numerous plaudits from impressed onlookers, including then-Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho.

“Their centre-backs had a fantastic match,” said Mourinho following the Hammers’ 3-1 victory over United back in 2018. “Congratulations to the scout who found Diop, a monster who dictated everything.”However, the former France under-21 defender has struggled to build on his early promise in east London. The likes of Craig Dawson and Angelo Ogbonna moved ahead of Diop in David Moyes’ pecking order last season, limiting the youngster to just 15 top-flight starts. It’s led to speculation that Diop could seek pastures new this summer, and the King Power Stadium could be the ideal destination for him.

Morgan’s decision to hang up his boots has left a sizeable gap in the Leicester backline, while Rodgers has cultivated an enviable reputation of developing promising young talent throughout his managerial career.

The Foxes legend proved to be a no-nonsense centre-half during his time at the club, notably averaging 4.2 headers won and 4.7 clearances per game in the 2018/19 season. In the same campaign, the West Ham giant won 2.3 headers and made 3.7 clearances per match, also illustrating his reliability at the back.

The combination of a new challenge, regular game-time and working under the Northern Irishman could be the perfect cocktail that Diop needs to rediscover his best form.

Therefore, Leicester director of football Jon Rudkin must swoop for the Frenchman in the current transfer window, providing Rodgers will the squad depth required to fight on multiple fronts and giving him a worthy heir to club legend Morgan.

Stunning Davies crushes Lancashire

Scorecard

A magnificent maiden one-day century from Steven Davies played the major part in Worcestershire’s overwhelming 105-run victory over Lancashire, in a match reduced to 25 overs per side due to the weather. The home side, sadly short of fighting spirit on this occasion, succumbed in less than 18 overs as the rampant visitors proved unstoppable in the field. The inconsistent lunchtime weather provided sun one minute, showers the next, but eventually relented to allow play to start at four o’clock. Lancashire, having won the toss and with Glen Chapple as captain in place of the resting Stuart Law, put the visitors in to bat.Worcestershire dominated from the very first ball, a half-volley on leg stump from Sajid Mahmood, which Vikram Solanki neatly glanced for four. In the second over, Davies hit a ball from Chapple for a superb six over extra cover, and the team was off to an ideal start. Solanki greeted Kyle Hogg to the bowling crease with a six over midwicket first ball, and 16 came off the over; he was not entrusted with the ball again. The pair added 70 at eight an over before Solanki chipped a catch to mid-on, departing for 28. Davies was already into the 40s, and he continued to dominate the innings, reaching his 50 off 40 balls. There were brief cameos from Stephen Moore (12) and Ben Smith (15) at the other end, but otherwise it was largely a one-man show; Graeme Hick had a disappointing day with just 3 off 11 balls. It was a tight call for Davies, as he approached his century with the overs running out. His partners did manage to give him the strike when he needed it, and he faced the last ball on 99. He worked it down to third man for what should have been just a single, but a misfield gave him the four and he finished with a superb 103 off 83 balls. Tom Smith, recalled from a loan spell with Leicestershire as a late replacement for Dominic Cork, bowled well to take 2 for 27, while Keedy did a fine job with 1 for 16 in his five overs to bottle up the middle of the innings. It was a tough chase for Lancashire, made more difficult when Lou Vincent holed out in the covers in the first over. Within six overs they were in terminal trouble, Paul Horton and Mal Loye going for 12 apiece, and the total 26 for 3. Steven Croft and Faf du Plessis were quickly out to skiers, and at this stage four wickets had fallen in consecutive overs. At 32 for 5, Lancashire were doomed. After this, it was simply an exercise in damage limitation by Lancashire, and they didn’t even manage this until the indignant captain, Chapple, arrived at the crease. He hammered Matt Mason for 18 off an over, including sixes over square leg and long-on, raising his team from the depths of 48 for 7 – only in the next over to pop up a simple catch and depart for 23.The final dismal score was 84, and the Lancashire supporters who risked the weather to watch the match will be deeply disappointed by their team’s lack of fight. Gareth Andrew ended with 3 for 12 while Gareth Batty, in his three overs, claimed 3 for 2. Davies alone scored 19 more runs than the entire home team, and Worcestershire are currently on a roll.

Everton eyeing Guilherme Arana

An update has emerged regarding Everton’s interest in Brazilian left-back Guilherme Arana.

What’s the talk?

According to Brazilian outlet Torcedores (via TEAMtalk), Everton are interested in signing Atletico Mineiro full-back Guilherme Arana.

The report claims that the Toffees have been sending scouts to watch him play for Brazil at the Olympics, where he is playing alongside Richarlison. They are in the quarter-finals of the competition, with the Blues continuing to track his progress.

Fans would love him

Marcel Brands must sanction a swoop for the left-back this summer as he could be a quality addition to the squad heading into next season, while the fans would likely love him.

Everton are short on cover in the full-back areas and Arana could be a much-needed signing to bolster the depth of Rafa Benitez’s squad. Lucas Digne is the first-choice on the left-hand side of the defence and there is no need for him to be immediately replaced, but behind him there is little in the way of competition.

Niels Nkounkou is still very raw, while Ben Godfrey was forced to play at left-back at times last season as a right-footed centre-back naturally, and bringing Arana in could alleviate any need to do that again. Not only would Digne have a serious challenger for his place in the team, it would also allow the former Norwich man to focus solely on playing at centre-back instead of filling in at full-back.

André Jardine, Brazil’s coach at the Olympics, heaped praise on the 1.76m (5 foot 9) beast as he said of the 24-year-old: “He is going through a spectacular phase, he was the best full-back at the last Brazilian Championship, with a great resourcefulness, defensively and offensively.

“His big message at the last Championship was that he scored goals, gave assists, he even scored a goal on our last call. I talk to Franco a lot. With his approval on the left-back, he really meets the Brazilian National Team. Arana fills our eyes with us at the club and here.”

This illustrates that Arana bombs up and down the left flank as he is able to make an impact at both ends of the pitch. Everton fans would likely appreciate him working hard to get up the pitch, as Digne does, whilst potentially offering some assists and goals from the back.

He has one assist in three games at the Olympics and has averaged a superb SofaScore rating of 7.10 in Tokyo. Therefore, he could be a quality signing for the Blues in an ideal position, and one who Everton supporters would surely love to see competing with Digne for the left-back spot next season.

AND in other news, Brands must “raise the bar” by landing “phenomenal” £195k-p/w colossus for Everton…

South African seamers too hot to handle on Wanderers green top

South Africa new ball bowlers Makhaya Ntini and Shaun Pollock shared seven wickets to condemn Sri Lanka to a comprehensive six-wicket defeat in the opening One-Day International at Wanderers on Wednesday. The visitors were forced to relive their Wanderers nightmare in the first Test earlier in the month as they were bowled out for a meagre 128 on a green and bouncy pitch ill-suited to the limited overs game.Sri Lanka’s new ball bowlers also made early inroads, quickly seeing off openers Herschelle Gibbs and Graeme Smith. Rookie fast bowler Prabath Nissanka then dismissed Boeta Dippenaar and Justin Ontong to leave the home side wobbling on 56 for four. However, by the afternoon the devil in the pitch had been largely been burntaway by the strong African sun, and South Africa eventually cruised to victory thanks to an unbroken 73 run partnership between Jacques Kallis (38*) and Mark Boucher (45*) for the fifth wicket, winning with 20.3 overs to spare.During the Wanderers Test Sri Lanka were bowled out for 192 and 130 and the groundsman – whose preparations for this game had admittedly been hampered by mechanical problems to his two rollers – manufactured a similar seamers’ paradise here. This game had been used as a dummy run for the World Cup with the introduction of stringent security checks and a complicated traffic control system. Those arrangements ran smoothly but there will now be concerns that a similar surface is not produced for the World Cup final in March. That is not to say that Sri Lankans were not culpable. On the contrary, theybatted poorly. They may well have fought back bravely and aggressively atCenturion in the second Test, but the reality is that they remain alarminglyvulnerable on overseas pitches. To the credit of the South Africans, especially Pollock and Ntini who bowledsuperbly, they exploited the surface expertly after winning a crucial toss in the morning. Before the majority of the 12,000 strong crowd had chewed their first biltong of the morning, Sri Lanka had crumpled to 30 for five.Middle order duo Mahela Jayawardene (31) and Russel Arnold (28) briefly raised the tourists’ hopes with a fighting 65 run partnership for the sixth wicket, but after Ntini broke through in his second spell the South Africans soon mopped up the tail.Ntini claimed three for 22 from his 10 overs and Man-of-the-Match Pollock finished with four for 18 from 8.4 overs when he trapped last man Pulasthi Gunaratne lbw to wrap up the innings in the 47th over.Marvan Atapattu had started the morning’s capitulation when he was caught behind off a lifting delivery that jagged back to brush his inside edge. Debutante Jehan Mubarak lasted just ten balls before being palpably lbw to aPollock inswinger.Jayasuriya – back in charge but not form after an ankle injury – drove one boundary through the off-side before being caught at third man from a characteristic off-side slash.Sangakkara – Sri Lanka’s sledger in-chief at Centurion – completely mistimed a back-footed drive and was caught in the covers, and veteran Aravinda de Silva completed a woeful first hour for the tourists as he feathered a catch behind.Fortunately Arnold, who had been in wretched form during the Test series, scoring just runs in four innings, was able to temporarily halt the slide with assistance from Jayawardene, preventing an embarrassingly early finish.Pollock’s decision to call back Ntini for a second spell brought instantaneous success as Arnold was caught off a leading edge. That was followed soon after by the dismissal of Jaywardene, who was brilliantly caught one-handed in the gully by Gibbs off a full-blooded cut stroke.

Nash gives NSW upper hand against Tasmania

HOBART, Nov 23 AAP – A fine all round performance by fast bowler Don Nash gave New South Wales the upper hand in the Pura Cup match against Tasmania in Hobart today.Nash hit a lusty 50 to help boost the Blues first innings to 393 and then took three wickets to leave the Tigers a precarious 5-183 at stumps on the second day.Tasmania suffered from the problem that’s plagued it all season – its batsmen got starts, but couldn’t convert them into a big innings. This was particularly true of Michael Dighton, who briefly illuminated Bellerive Oval with a lovely 54, which included 10 imperious boundaries.Captain Jamie Cox batted for almost two hours for a dogged 25 and Dan Marsh stayed 71 minutes for 22.Scott Mason, the former opener who was recalled to add some barnacle to the middle order, did his job admirably for 124 minutes. He batted with great concentration and occasional pugnacity for 39 before being given lbw to Stuart Clark for 39 just before stumps.Allrounders Shane Watson (19) and Scott Kremerskothen (7) will resume the battle tomorrow, their first target being the 60 more needed to avoid the follow-on.Nash bowled with aggression and accuracy and two of his wickets came when he extracted extra lift that caught an edge.Plenty of other deliveries beat the edge as he gave the batsmen almost nothing they could hit with safety and finished with 3-39 from 19 overs, nine of them maidens. The Blues were hampered by Stuart MacGill being hit on the hand while batting in the morning. The leg spinner didn’t take the field until after tea, when he bowled four relatively expensive overs and left again.NSW resumed in the morning at 6-280 and Tasmania did a poor job of wrapping up the innings, bowling waywardly and dropping two difficult catches.Nash, Nathan Bracken (38 no) and Stuart Clark (24) made them pay with some big but never outrageous hitting.A 56-run eighth wicket stand between Nash and Bracken in 43 minutes was particularly damaging and Clark added insult to injury when he helped Bracken put on a further 41 for the last wicket. It was finally ended when Kremerskothen had Clark caught off the first ball after lunch. The wickets were shared, Damien Wright finishing with three and debutant Adam Griffith, Watson and Kremerskothen taking two each.

Proteas pulverize Pakistan's final dream

TANGIERS-It went down the wire, but it was South Africa who held their nerve to defend a most modest total of 196, in the end winning by eight runs, with nine deliveries remaining unconsumed

Agha Akbar18-Aug-2002TANGIERS-It went down the wire, but it was South Africa who held their nerve to defend a most modest total of 196, in the end winning by eight runs, with nine deliveries remaining unconsumed. With this second defeat on the trot, Pakistan’s dream of making it to the Morocco Cup 2002 final lay in tatters, and Sri Lanka and South Africa stood qualified with one league match still to go.Led by Allan Donald (4 for 43) and Lance Klusener (2 for 21), the Proteas never gave up hope and kept coming back to take wicket after wicket, until they ensured the narrow victory which never seemed possible when Shahid Afridi was tearing into them with unalloyed aggression.Pakistan was off to a bad start, with Imran Nazir gone in the first over, and Shoaib Malik following him after a stand of 49 for the second wicket with Afridi. That turned out to be the best partnership of the match. After Shahid Afridi’s (62, off 40 deliveries, 6 fours, 4 sixes) whirlwind knock helped overcome the early jitters, Pakistan somehow managed to bat themselves out of the match. With 92 runs on the board for the loss of two wickets when Afridi was going great guns, Pakistan was scoring at around five runs an over till the 19th over, and reaching the target of 197 inside 40 overs to earn a bonus point looked probable. From this position of enormous strength, they lost eight wickets to be snatch defeat from the jaws of victory by some rank inept batting. The South Africans bowled exceptionally well, especially Donald, Klusener and Pollock. But it was the Pakistani batsmen who kept throwing their wickets away. The most crucial of these were that of Yousuf Youhana, who needlessly played one down the throat of Nicky Boje at square-leg after Inzamam-ul-Haq had been dropped by Donald in the last over. That started the rout that could not be stemmed.Younis Khan followed next ball, leg before to Klusener. Abdul Razzaq was bowled in the next over by Boje on a spinning delivery. From the excellent position of 92 for three, Pakistan was reduced to six for 119 to give South Africa the vision of a victory.Sensing that Pakistan had hit a trough, the South Africans never let go from here as Donald bowled Rashid Latif and Inzamam smote Justin Ontong for a six but in the process stepped on his wicket. At eight for 163, Wasim Akram and Azhar tried to make a fist of it. But Donald got Akram bowled middle stump, and soon it was all over as skipper Waqar Younis holed out to long-on off Allan Donald with Graeme Smith pouching the catch to bring Pakistan’s innings to a close.Pakistan attack restricts Proteas to under 196:
Earlier, another excellent bowling performance by the Pakistan attack, especially by the new-ball duo of Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis – the two of them sharing five wickets, four of them taken inside first 8 overs — restricted South Africa to 196 for eight.Probably acknowledging that it was desperate times which required desperate measures, both sides strengthened their batting, making two changes apiece. To the extent that for South Africa Pollock came at No 10, while Akram had a similar position in the order for Pakistan.Strengthening the batting, however, didn’t work for the Proteas, in the main because they lost too many wickets too early in the match, starting with the first ball dismissal of Herschelle Gibbs. From five down for 49, they recovered enough, though — because of good hands by Boetta Dippenaar (55, 89 balls, 8 fours), Mark Boucher (57, 99 balls, 5 fours) and a much-restrained Lance Klusener (28, off 42 deliveries).Wasim Akram struck a major blow first ball, as Herschelle Gibbs chased a wide one outside off-stump, guiding it into Rashid Latif’s safe hands. Younis got Jacques Kallis on a fuller delivery next over, and the two most experienced batsmen in the top half of the order were gone. Akram had Smith leg before two balls later, plumb in front playing too far back to an incutter. Justin Ontong took boundaries off Akram and Younis, and was the first to double figures, but Younis had him caught and bowled off a miscued drive. At 29 for four, the South Africans were in deep trouble. After rewarding first spells, Akram (2 for 13 in 5 overs) and Younis (2 for 27 in 6 overs) gave way to Azhar and Razzaq. A 20-run stand between Boeta Dippenaar, who seemed to be the best of the Proteas, and Jonty Rhodes steadied the innings somewhat but Azhar removed Rhodes to put it back on the rocks. From here on, Dippenaar and Boucher quite considerably revived their team’s fortunes with a stand of 78 for the sixth wicket and were getting more adventurous when Azhar Mahmood’s throw from deep square-leg got the former a couple of feet out of his crease. The breakthrough got Pakistan amongst the wickets again. Boucher soldiered on, taking fours off Razzaq, Younis and Azhar, but Azhar got him in his last over, the waist high full hitting the top of middle and leg stumps.Despite the hard-hitters packed in the tail, the late charge never came; only 50 runs came in the last 10 overs for the loss Boucher and Boje. The Pakistani bowlers remained in control throughout the innings; only 4 fours were conceded in the last 10 overs, and just one in the last six.
