Leeds to revisit Ryan Kent with another bid before end of transfer window

Leeds United’s brash summer of spending isn’t slowing up just yet, though they are running out of time if they are to secure any new signings…

What’s the word?

According to Football Insider, the Yorkshiremen are poised to submit another bid for Rangers winger Ryan Kent before the end of the transfer window in a little under two weeks time.

They claim that the Whites are well-aware of a £20m release clause within the 23-year-old’s contract and earlier this summer, they had a £10m bid knocked back by the Scottish giants.

Marcelo Bielsa is a keen admirer of the former Liverpool youngster and fits the profile of being someone who could improve under his coaching.

Winger needed?

United already have Jack Harrison and Helder Costa as first-choice wing options whilst there is some promise in Ian Poveda, though it still appears as if Bielsa wants another winger.

Perhaps Kent could be that man as his form at Ibrox continues to make the headlines. Last season, he provided eight goals and four assists in all competitions and that has continued well into this campaign having already delivered four goals and three assists.

Gordon Strachan has likened the former Reds winger to Sadio Mane, claiming he plays as an “old fashioned inside forward” whilst Kyle Lafferty believes Kent could become a better player than Eden Hazard, he said:

“He has everything in his locker. Ryan’s in the top three of the best I’ve played with and I’ve had Dybala and Belotti as team-mates. I’m more than happy to say that as he provides something special. It’s about how he takes the ball, how he runs with it and I’ve seen him absolutely destroy defenders. He can do that even with three or four defenders around him. Ryan’s a match-winner.”

If Bielsa really wants Kent that bad, then he’s going to have to convince Victor Orta and Andrea Radrizzani into forking out a whopping £20m for his signature.

Having previously missed out on Dan James, it’s perhaps the least they can do. They must trust him after all.

Liverpool: Fans are in awe at Virgil van Dijk footage from Arsenal game

Virgil van Dijk has stood out yet again as one of Liverpool’s strongest players on the pitch following their 3-1 win over Arsenal.

The Reds made it look effortless as they fired three goals past Mikel Arteta’s side on Monday night. Despite falling behing to a goal from Alexandre Lacazette, the reigning Premier League champions hit back and then some as Sadio Mane, Andy Robertson and Diogo Jota were all on the scoresheet.

However, one man who has also impressed many Kopites is their Dutch powerhouse in the heart of the Liverpool defence.

A clip of Van Dijk making several audacious long-range passes to his team’s attack is doing the rounds on Twitter. Compilation account @CF_Comps has grabbed a lot of attention with their latest highlight video.

Loads of Kopites have flocked to the comments to laud their £72m-valued centre-back. One fan has described Van Dijk as ‘absolutely unreal’ whilst another thinks he is the ‘best player in the Premier League’.

Glasgow Rangers: Alan Hutton criticises Alfredo Morelos after game against Aberdeen

There is a lot going on at Glasgow Rangers at the moment, especially in attack as Jermain Defoe is injured, two new strikers have recently signed and Alfredo Morelos is being linked with a move away.

The reshuffle that looks to be happening upfront seems to be nearly completed, but despite the Colombian being rumoured to leave soon, Steven Gerrard still decided to start the forward in their first game of the Scottish Premiership 2020/21 season. The Gers managed to come away with the 1-0 victory against Aberdeen, with Ryan Kent scoring the only goal.

Alan Hutton has been speaking about Morelos following the match to Football Insider, and the former Scottish International said: “He didn’t look himself to me if I’m honest. I’ve always said it does take you a couple of games to get into it, it was a very short pre-season.

“He still looks a little bit heavy for me, he looks big, so look, he’s going to have to work hard. Look, I listened to Steven Gerrard after the game and he must be sick to his back teeth with what he hears about him.

“I totally understand but the thing is it’s not going to go away, the rumours are always going to circulate but I think at the moment he really needs to knuckle down and get his head on that he’s a Rangers player at the moment.”

This is perhaps a little harsh from the ex-Aston Villa right-back. Despite the fact that Morelos did not score, he did pick up a 7.9 rating, per SofaScore, which saw him receive the second-best rating out of anyone who featured in the match.

He picked up an assist for the goal, whilst also completing three of his five attempted dribbles, and made three key passes, per SofaScore, so he clearly was a menace for the Aberdeen defence.

Obviously the rumours will be on his mind, but for his first competitive fixture in around four months, the Colombian definitely put in a good shift, and it shows how good he is that in such a performance, people believe he was not at his best.

Who is Ben Chilwell? – Profile

Name: Ben Chilwell

Club: Leicester City

Date of Birth: 21 December 1996 (age 23)

Position: Left-back

Ben Chilwell – His career so far

Ben Chilwell was born in Milton Keynes, and began his youth career in the academy of Rushden & Diamonds at the age of nine until 12. After three years at their youth academy, Chilwell had a six-week trial at Leicester City, and joined the club later in 2010. Having been awarded with Leicester’s Academy Player of the Year award at the end of the 2014-15 season, Chilwell broke into their first team, making his professional debut on 27 October 2015 in a League Cup tie against Hull City.

Late 2015, Chilwell joined Championship side Huddersfield Town on a youth-loan until January 2016, though later that year the young left-back signed a new contract with Leicester until 2021. Chilwell made his Premier League debut against Everton on Boxing Day 2016, going on to make 19 appearances in total across their title winning campaign.

Chilwell was called up to the full England squad from the under-21 side in September 2018 ahead of a friendly match against Switzerland. He went on to make his debut during this match as a 79th-minute substitute for Danny Rose – Chilwell has gone on to play 11 times for the Three Lions.

Transfer Latest

Ben Chilwell has been strongly linked with a move to Premier League rivals Chelsea as Frank Lampard aims to strengthen his sides defence, especially the left-back position which has needed permanent filling for some time.

Player Profile

Chilwell is an all-rounded left-back, with both attacking and defensive qualities of the highest level. He has a lot of the traits of a modern full-back such as Andrew Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold for Liverpool, with three goals and three assists to his name last season.

The English defender has a lot more potential and can flourish under the right management – he is thought to be valued at around £40m in today’s market.

Total Duds: West Ham signing Jordan Hugill for £9.18m was a waste of money

This article forms part of our Total Duds feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at how a player has fared since being signed or sold, using statistical figures and statements from pundits to prove how bad a deal the club got.

Back in the January transfer window in 2018, West Ham signed Jordan Hugill from Preston on deadline day. They acquired the forward for around £9.18m, per Transfermarkt and he had a decent season at the Championship side whilst he was there in the 2017/18 campaign as he scored eight goals and supplied two assists in 27 appearances.

There was hope that he could replicate this at the Hammers and the Englishman was joining at a good time as the East London side sat 11th in the Premier League.

However, it did not start well for the forward as he featured for only 22 minutes in the 2017/18 season for the Irons and failed to score, per Transfermarkt. This clearly highlighted that he was not rated at the club, which was further proven when they loaned him out to Middlesbrough for the 2018/19 season.

At the Championship side he managed to make 41 appearances, scoring seven times and providing two assists, but clearly this was not enough as the Hammers then loaned him out last season to Queens Park Rangers, where he scored 15 goals in 41 appearances.

With the 28-year-old now returning to the club as his loan has expired, it seems that West Ham want to get rid of him permanently, with Norwich and QPR interested in permanent deals. However, the Canaries only want to pay £2m upfront, potentially rising to £4m.

So far he has still only managed 22 minutes of football at West Ham and the fact he could leave for less than half of his initial transfer fee highlights that he has been a total dud for the Irons.

Newcastle fans loving Paul Smith’s update on Saudi consortium’s plans

Whilst big-money signings are all well and good after a takeover, making major improvements to the club’s stadium and training facilities can be equally as important, and it appears the Saudi consortium looking to buy Newcastle have got exactly that in mind.

According to journalist Paul Smith, they have drawn up a blueprint for a “major makeover” of the club, and have already drawn up plans to demolish the Magpies’ existing training ground and invest a mammoth £25m in order to bring it up to par with their Premier League rivals.

The Greatest Bargains in Premier League history – How much did they cost?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

And after seeing Smith’s update, Newcastle fans flooded to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the matter.

A couple of Newcastle fans revealed their satisfaction at seeing the club focus on the “stuff that matters”.

Unsurprisingly, many Newcastle supporters are thrilled with the idea that the Saudi consortium are looking to make major investments not just in terms of new players, but also off the pitch too.

Manchester City’s owners in particular have done a great job of ensuring the club’s training and youth facilities are amongst the best in the world, and they are already beginning to reap the rewards of that with multiple Premier League titles over the past decade.

And it looks like Newcastle’s potential new owners are looking to follow suit.

Leeds United: Fans react to Harry Kewell’s comments

Fans of Leeds United have been reacting to a post on Twitter, which relays comments made by Harry Kewell after the former Leeds midfielder moved to Galatasary in 2008.

Kewell signed a two-year contract with the Turkish side as a free-agent in 2008, following the expiry of his contract with Liverpool.

However, at the time of his signing with Galatasaray, Kewell came under criticism from fans of Leeds United, as the former Australian international was part of the Leeds side when two of their fans were killed in clashes before a UEFA Cup semi-final against Galatasaray in April 2000.

Ray Fell, then chairman of the Leeds United Supporters’ Club, said at the time: “It’s his career and his choice to make, but many Leeds fans will express their regrets. It’s disappointing, to put it mildly. Time has passed but there are people in Leeds close to the two lads we lost who will find it harder to move on.”

In response, Kewell stated: “It was a tragic thing in football but we can’t live in the past. I am happy and I hope everyone else can be too There were a lot of other clubs out there but this is perfect for me. Galatasaray wanted me from the start. The facilities are great. It’s a fantastic city and I’m willing to learn.”

After the former midfielder’s remarks resurfaced on Twitter recently, fans of the club have flocked to have their say on the matter, with many still outraged at Kewell’s comments, while others have claimed that his words had ruined his legacy at Leeds.

Sunderland must adopt more attacking style to improve results and win over fans

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Sunderland have struggled under Phil Parkinson and though a change to 4-3-3 didn’t yield success against Scunthorpe, it could be a useful option long-term.

On the chalkboard

With more than a month to go until the January transfer window and several important games to be played until then, Parkinson needs to find a solution from the options he has available currently.

Since taking over he has mainly continued Jack Ross’ 4-2-3-1 style, a surprising choice given the Scot’s lack of success, and though the Black Cats seemed to be heading on the right path after the demolition of Tranmere, they have since gone backwards.

That could be due to a lack of quality, but the bigger issue seems to be a lack of confidence, which could be addressed with a more attacking formation.

Key to that is the front-three, and particularly Will Grigg. Sunderland have to find a way of imposing dominance on the opposition, and posing a constant danger in the attacking final third is a good way to do that.

Operating with a 4-3-3 formation could enable that to happen, and in getting wingers to play higher up the pitch and closer to Grigg, Parkinson could start to build self-belief and establish a run of good form.

Attacking mindset

Despite the concerning results of late, there have been good individual performances since Parkinson took over, which indicates that with time he may begin to bring the best out of the players at his disposal.

It is important he does that and gets players like Aiden McGeady and Duncan Watmore to replicate their impressive performances against Gillingham and Tranmere respectively.

4-3-3 would suit those two players, as they both come alive in the opponent’s final third, and playing higher up the pitch they would have a greater chance of receiving the ball in threatening positions.

If given more attacking responsibility they could also provide support and service for Grigg, and that could prove pivotal.

Too often in games he has been left too isolated, having just 15 and 17 touches in recent defeats against Wycombe and Shrewsbury, which made it very difficult for him to get on the scoresheet.

Parkinson has thus far failed to win over the supporters, but a more attacking and entertaining style would at least reinvigorate a fanbase that is becoming increasingly disillusioned with their club, and their owner.

Charlton: Lee Bowyer will be kicking himself that Ivan Toney deal didn’t go through

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Back in the summer, funds were tight at The Valley – presumably, they still are.

So much so that Charlton boss Lee Bowyer sold Dutch right-back Anfernee Dijksteel in order to fund a move for Peterborough striker Ivan Toney.

“The Anfernee money was going to go on Toney. But that didn’t come off.

“We were always trying to keep Lyle [Taylor]. The plan was to play Toney alongside Lyle. That’s why we sold Anfernee [to spend the money in other areas of the pitch].”

Sadly for the Addicks, the League One side rejected all of their bids, and one would assume that Bowyer will be kicking himself that a move for the forward never materialised given Toney’s stunning start to the campaign.

After scoring an eye-catching 23 goals across all competitions in 2018/19, the former Newcastle man has begun the 2019/20 campaign on fire.

The 23-year-old has been smashing the goals in like it’s nothing, finding the back of the net ten times in just 12 League One appearances this season.

Form like that will presumably not go unnoticed by other clubs – Barnsley and another unnamed Championship side were also interested back in the summer – and one assumes that Charlton might regret missing out on Toney.

For one, competition for his signature may potentially increase following his quite ridiculous start to the season, while Toney’s price tag may also rise due to his added importance to Peterborough and his young age – there is definitely room for improvement on what is already an outstanding footballer.

The Addicks haven’t struggled too much without Toney in their ranks as they currently sit just five points off the top of the table, but there could be cause for concern in the near future.

Their main man up top, Lyle Taylor, has scored five goals in six games, but he is still yet to sign a new contract with his current deal set to expire in the summer, and Toney could have become the ideal replacement.

Macauley Bonne is the only other Addicks forward to score a decent amount of goals with four in seven appearances, while Chuks Aneke has just one goal to his name – Tomer Hemed is still yet to score.

Given the lack of firepower behind Taylor, missing out on the deal for Toney could become quite the blunder if the club’s talisman elects not to extend his stay at The Valley, and Bowyer will surely be kicking himself if he ends up with just Bonne, Aneke and Hemed to fire in the goals.
