Derbs, Northants plan Barbados pre-season

Derbyshire will head back to the Caribbean to prepare for their first season in Division One of the County Championship since 2000 and have vowed to maintain their youthful selection policy.Last season’s pre-season trip proved successful as Karl Krikken’s young side, featuring several homegrown players, went on to win promotion for the first time. They will fly out to Barbados for the fourth consecutive year on March 11, 2013 for 12 days, playing practice matches against local opposition and other counties, including Northamptonshire. Two two-day fixtures, a 40-over match and a Twenty20 tournament at the Kensington Oval are scheduled.”Barbados is a tried and tested pre-season venue and it provides ideal preparation ahead of a challenging domestic campaign,” Kirkken, Derbyshire’s head coach, said. “To be guaranteed good weather and consequently time on the field is extremely important for our players at this critical time of year. We’ve certainly felt the benefit from previous visits.”It’s an intense itinerary and one that gives us the best possible chance of hitting the ground running for first division cricket in 2013.”Despite the step up in the Championship, Derbyshire will trust their young squad and resist temptation to greatly increase the playing budget. During his time as academy coach, Kirkken nurtured many of the players recently given a chance in the first team – such as Dan Redfern, Ross Whiteley and Tom Poynton – and who have now signed extended contracts.”Hopefully there are more contracts in the pipeline,” Krikken said. “We would like a top-three batter – we’re talking to Usman Khawaja about coming back, and we have a back-up shortlist, but not many are making moves right now.”But again, we’re not panicking because I’ve already got 16 players I believe to be wholly reliable, who complement each other’s abilities, and who instinctively put the team’s interests before their own – something that hasn’t always been the case at Derbyshire.”Captain Wayne Madsen also signed a new three-year deal as Derbyshire look to continue the careful management that has seen consecutive years of profit under the chairmanship of Chris Grant, and gradual improvement on the field, culminating in last season’s Division Two title. They reeled off four wins in the opening seven matches of their successful campaign and put the bright start down to their pre-season tour. Derbyshire were not the only county to reap the benefits of a West Indies warm-up: Hampshire, the CB40 and FLt20 champions, Warwickshire, who won the County Championship title and promotion-winning Yorkshire all prepared for the 2012 season in Barbados.Joining Derbyshire next year are Northants, who will be hoping for a similar early season boost to the one they enjoyed after touring South Africa in 2011. Despite not winning a match on the trip, they blazed a trail in both the County Championship and CB40, going unbeaten in 12 matches before the FLt20 badly derailed their season. A similar trip was cancelled at the start of this year, with Northamptonshire ultimately finishing second-bottom in Division Two.Newly appointed captain Steven Peters told it will give them a “noticeable advantage” for next season. “We’re at a disadvantage if we start the season and we haven’t been away,” he said. “It’s more valuable than seven or eight sessions back home.”Northamptonshire’s trip is being partly funded by the players, as well as donations from the Northants Supporters Club. The squad will fly out on March 11 and return on March 23.Head coach, David Ripley, added: “Once again there will be an early start to the season, which means it is crucially important that the lads can get as much cricket as possible beforehand. With uncertain weather conditions in March, sometimes outdoor practice can be limited in England. We all saw how the team hit the ground running following the last pre-season tour to South Africa in 2011.”

Hartley and bowlers put Queensland on top

Chris Hartley’s sixth first-class century and a strong performance from the Queensland bowlers gave the Bulls the upper hand in the battle for the Sheffield Shield

Chris Hartley’s sixth first-class century and a strong performance from the Queensland bowlers gave the Bulls the upper hand in the battle for the Sheffield Shield. But at the close of the third day at the Gabba, Ed Cowan was still standing firm for Tasmania and Queensland needed another four wickets before they would know what target they would be chasing in the fourth innings.Tasmania were 101 runs in front at stumps, with Cowan on 59 and Luke Butterworth on 11. Jason Krejza, Brendan Drew and Jackson Bird were the batsmen still to come for Tasmania, who were 6 for 136, and if the Tigers could push their advantage up towards 200 their bowlers would have something to defend in their push for back-to-back titles.Cowan had been cautious but if the fast bowlers dropped short he was especially strong when cutting, and he had struck five boundaries. However, there hadn’t been any top-order support for Cowan as the Queensland fast bowlers reduced the Tigers to 4 for 36 before Tom Triffitt (35) combined with Cowan for a stabilising 51-run stand.Steve Magoffin had angled a ball across Steve Cazzulino, who was caught in the slips for 4, and Nick Kruger was also taken in the cordon for a 12-ball duck off the bowling of Ryan Harris. The big wicket came when the Queensland captain James Hopes brought himself on and struck first ball, nipping a ball back in between bat and pad to bowl Ricky Ponting for 6.The edges kept coming as James Faulkner was caught at slip for 3 off Hopes, before the Cowan-Triffitt stand. Triffitt was bowled by Harris, who was impressive in collecting 2 for 35. The final wicket for the day was the batsman Alex Doolan, who was batting down at No.7 due to a back injury and hooked a catch to fine leg off the bowling of Alister McDermott for 15.The day had started well for Tasmania, when Hopes added only four to his overnight score and was lbw to Jackson Bird for 58. Harris was caught behind off Luke Butterworth for 18 but then came the partnership that could yet prove to be the difference, a 97-run stand between Hartley and Magoffin that took Queensland from a shaky position to well past Tasmania’s total.Hartley’s experience at the Gabba showed as he took few risks but latched on to anything full enough to drive through the off side, and his shots from cover to mid-off were outstanding. He also pulled occasionally and struck the ball down the ground and brought up his century from his 151st delivery with a pull for four off Krejza. It was Hartley’s first Shield hundred in two seasons and it came at the perfect time, as the Bulls aim to improve their conversion rate having made six of the past nine Shield finals for just one title. Hartley had excellent support from Magoffin, who didn’t throw his wicket away and made a valuable 31 from 74 balls before he edged behind off Butterworth, who finished with 4 for 54.Bird collected 4 for 56 as he had Cameron Boyce caught behind for a duck and then ended the innings with the wicket of Hartley, who on 111 left a ball that swung back into him and was trapped in front. It was the end of a fine innings, and one that could be the difference in a challenging match for the batsmen.

Where will Chris Gayle go?

Four days before the first trading window of the IPL shuts, the biggest question surrounds the future of Chris Gayle, the West Indies opener. Gayle turned out for the Royal Challengers Bangalore last season, and topped the run-charts while taking them to the IPL final. However, Gayle joined the Royal Challengers as a replacement player midway through the season and was hence on a one-year contract. This year the Royal Challengers have first rights to his services, but it is up to Gayle whether to accept their offer or make himself available for the February 4 auction.Either way, Gayle stands to cash in on the Twenty20 reputation he has built after hitting two centuries and five half-centuries for the Royal Challengers over last year’s IPL and Champions League T20. Last season, he went unsold in the original auction and when he replaced an injured Dirk Nannes the maximum the Royal Challengers could pay him was $650,000, the price Nannes was bought for. This year, Gayle can be bought for up to $2 million, the purse each franchise is allowed. The Royal Challengers are looking at breaking the bank to retain him before January 20, and if they cannot come to an agreement with him other franchises can bid for him in next month’s auction.”You will have to wait. We will make an announcement soon,” Siddharth Mallya, the owner of the Bangalore franchise, told ESPNcricinfo, without revealing any further details. But the Royal Challengers are hot on the heels of Gayle, who is currently playing in the Big Bash League in Australia for the Sydney Thunder. Should the Royal Challengers manage to sign Gayle before the auction, they will have to disclose the fee they have agreed with him to the IPL authorities, and that amount will be deducted from the franchise’s $2 million purse at the auction.A BCCI official told ESPNcricinfo that the Royal Challengers wanted to sign Gayle but they would have to shell out a large portion of their purse to convince him. “Bangalore want Gayle because they see the cricketing merit in the decision as he helped them to the final last year,” the official said. “But if they decide to sign a deal with him, they will have to pay big money and if they do that they will be left with nothing much at the auction.”As far as Gayle is concerned, he is spoilt for choice. Reportedly the Mumbai Indians, who have already signed Dinesh Karthik (for $2.35 million) and Pragyan Ojha during the transfer window, have expressed their interest in buying Gayle. “Every franchise would like to have Gayle. He turned one IPL on his own,” one of the franchise officials said. According to him Gayle would easily get the maximum $2 million purse available to each franchise. If more than one franchise bids $2 million for Gayle, it will go to a secret tie-breaker in which the competing franchises will submit closed bids.At the moment, it seems, Gayle holds all the aces.

Vamos tentar encurralar o Palmeiras – analisou.

Lee watches Twenty20's rise from joke to juggernaut

Having witnessed the evolution of Twenty20 from its formative days, Australia seamer Brett Lee admits that his team’s attitude towards the format has evolved over the years. As part of the Australian team in New Zealand in 2005, Lee played in the first T20 international. To call it hit and giggle would have been to overstate the seriousness of the occasion. Donning retro uniforms and encouraged to grow their hair out or sport headbands, the two teams were there to entertain, and seemed unaware of the financial juggernaut the format would become.”Certainly the players think that and I think the public are now starting to realise that it is the third format of the game,” Lee told .”It’s a very important format of the game. It used to be, reading through the press and probably from us as well in ’04-05, a bit of a hit and giggle which it probably was back then because nobody knew how to take it on or what to do.”After that New Zealand tour the Australians, as their predecessors had done when one-day cricket emerged in the 1970s, took time to develop a seriousness of approach to the game, and lost the one-off T20 to England at the Rosebowl later that year having trained without taking heed of the match that evening.”No-one knew that if you’ve gone for less than 32 runs off your four overs you’ve had an extremely good game,” Lee said. “People saw you getting hit for 18-20 off your four overs and thought you were a bit expensive but as time goes on, 30 is pretty good. If you go for 40, even then it’s still pretty good.”Attitudes have changed greatly in the space of six years, culminating in the launch of the T20 Big Bash League in Australia. Lee said this reflected a greater understanding of public interest in the format.”It’s about understanding your game, knowing where it can be taken to,” he said. “Now that people are watching Twenty20 cricket, it’s exciting. Kids come down after school, parents come down after work, they don’t have to sit in the hot sun, they can watch it at night, it’s got music – it’s the stuff spectators love.”Nonetheless, in international terms T20 is still best served as an aperitif, and Lee applauded programmers for scheduling the two T20 internationals in Sri Lanka as a prelude to the limited overs and Test series that will follow.”If you were to have it at the end after a Test series it probably wouldn’t work as well,” he said. “Definitely I think the way a series should be run, or a tour should be run, is that you start with your Twenty20s, then your one-dayers and then your Test matches. It just flows in beautifully into the longer form of the game.”As for Sri Lanka, Lee expected a fight, but one from which the tourists could emerge victorious.”They’re a very compact unit and one that’s capable of beating any side around the world,” Lee said. “We’ve had some great bouts with them where we have probably had, on paper, the better side and they’ve played as a team and they’ve played very well.”We know that they’re a very strong side and we know that they’re going to come at us very hard but saying that as well, the squad we’ve got for Twenty20 and one-dayers is very, very strong. I’m really confident in the side we’ve got here to go on and take the series out.”

Tendulkar loses top spot in ICC Test rankings to Kallis

Sachin Tendulkar’s decision to not tour the West Indies has made him concede the top spot in the ICC Test rankings for batsmen to Jacques Kallis, as he has lost ratings points for missing the first Test in Kingston

Sachin Tendulkar’s decision to not tour the West Indies has made him concede the top spot in the ICC Test rankings for batsmen to Jacques Kallis, who also continues to be the top-ranked allrounder.A player loses 1% of his ratings points for every Test he misses, so Tendulkar will lose more points because he will miss the remaining two Tests against West Indies. He will begin next month’s Test series in England in second place, though, as there is some gap between him and Kumar Sangakkara, who is third.Rahul Dravid returned to the top 20 for the first time since November 2010 after his match-winning century at Sabina Park. He earned 45 ratings points, which lifted him nine places to No. 20, after he had slipped following a poor home series against New Zealand in November 2010. VVS Laxman, who had a twin failure in Kingston, dropped out of the top 10, falling five places to No. 13.Ishant Sharma, who took six wickets in Kingston, moved up three places to No. 11 in the ICC Test rankings for bowlers. Dale Steyn continues to be the top-ranked Test bowler, followed by Graeme Swann and James Anderson.

Canterbury take title, drama unfolds in Napier

A round-up of the tenth round of matches from the 2010-11 Plunket Shield

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Apr-2011

Gareth Hopkins’ unusual decision to forfeit an innings has led to a controversial denouement to the Plunket Shield•AFP

Canterbury finished strongly, defeating Northern Districts by eight wickets to take the Plunket Shield 2010/11 title at the Mainpower Oval in Rangiora. Canterbury went into the match in top spot on the points table, but within reach of Central Districts, Northern Districts and Wellington. A strong showing with bat and ball secured the championship for Canterbury though.Choosing to field, hosts Canterbury began ideally, as opening bowler Matthew Henry ripped through the Northern Districts top order to leave them 24 for 3. The visitors didn’t recover, folding for 149. Matthew registered his second five-for in four first class matches, and was well supported by Andrew Ellis who picked up three wickets in 5.1 overs. Canterbury’s innings began poorly, with Rob Nicol being bowled by Graeme Aldridge first ball. But six of the next nine batsmen got past 20, and though the top score was Peter Fulton’s 62, it was enough to build a sizeable first innings lead as they finished with 278. Brent Arnel was the pick of the bowlers, with figures of 4 for 45.Northern Districts did much better in their second innings, with half-centuries from Brook Hatwell and Bradley-John Watling pushing the total to 318. Ellis put up his second strong showing with the ball in the match, claiming 4 for 63. Canterbury’s top order then made short work of the target of 189, chasing it down in 31.2 overs at better than a run a ball.If Neil Wagner’s record six-ball-five-wicket haul and Canterbury’s solid performance to win the title did not grab attention, the drawn match between Central Districts and Auckland at Nelson Park, Napier provided more than it’s share of drama. After piling on the runs on days one and two, and the morning of day three – driven by centuries from Jeet Raval and Andrew de Boorder – Auckland declared at 471 for 4. Needing an outright win (and a Canterbury loss in Rangiora) to challenge for the championship title and with threatening weather on the horizon, Central Districts then took a gamble and declared their first innings at 5 for 1. Auckland captain Gareth Hopkins, in an attempt to push for a victory that would propel the last-placed Auckland into double digit points, responded by forfeiting his team’s second innings. Needing 467 from 175 overs, Central Districts were at 159 for 2 at stumps on day three, but predictably rain intervened on the final day, ruling out play. The teams’ surprising decision-making in the match sparked off a lot of debate. That Hopkins left Auckland so much time to get 467 lead to suspicions of collusion being voiced. At the end of day three, with the Canterbury-Northern Districts match heading into an interesting fourth day, Canterbury chief Lee Germon reportedly lodged a complaint with New Zealand Cricket. But Auckland coach Paul Strang shrugged off negative suggestions. “Gareth is astute and he’s pulling the strings out there,” he told . “If he felt we were a few runs short we would have gone out there and batted and got 20, 30, 40 or 50 or whatever he thought we needed. That’s the trick with a pitch that’s pretty benign. You’ve got to keep the batting team looking at the scoreboard, give them something to play for – that creates pressure in its own right.”Last year, a match between Northern Districts and Auckland was investigated after both teams forfeited an innings to force a result in a rain-effected game, but no evidence of collusion was found then.

Robin Singh eager to start working with U-19 squad

Robin Singh, the former Indian fielding coach, is hoping to apply his expertise to help raise the USA’s standard of cricket, beginning at the junior level.

Robin Singh will be getting a fresh taste of cricket in the USA when he arrives this weekend to coach the USA Under-19 team at the ICC Americas U-19 Division One tournament in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The former Indian fielding coach is hoping to apply his expertise to help raise the country’s standard of cricket, beginning at the junior level.”I’m really excited to get involved with US cricket,” Singh said when reached by telephone in India. “I used to work at doing a lot of development and coaching in Hong Kong and even though the USA is much bigger, I’m familiar with the challenges faced by an Associate country.”Singh was approached by USACA for the position, and while he is only contracted through this tournament, there is the possibility that both sides may work out a deal to keep him involved long term which may also mean taking over the senior team coaching duties as well. One of the major things that Singh hopes to focus on is improving the fitness of the players. However, he acknowledges that he’ll need more time in the future to work with the players in order to get the best results.”I don’t really know too much about the team yet,” he said. “There aren’t too many stats available, but I’ve gotten some information and am hoping to get to know the players as much as possible during the week to get the best out of them.”USA participated in the 2010 U-19 World Cup and will be hoping to make it back for the 2012 edition. Four players in the current squad were part of the team that went to New Zealand for last year’s main event including Salman Ahmad, Hammad Shahid, vice-captain Steven Taylor and captain Abhijit Joshi. USA begins tournament play on February 7 against Argentina.
