Indian board meets IMG officials over IPL

Senior BCCI functionaries met the top brass of IMG in Mumbai today to question their role in the various allegations related to the IPL

Nagraj Gollapudi17-May-2010Senior BCCI functionaries, including Shashank Manohar (president) and N Srinivasan (secretary) met the top brass of IMG in Mumbai on Monday to seek clarifications on their role in the various allegations related to the IPL. The meeting was described by Andrew Wildblood, IMG’s senior vice-president, as “brief, friendly and constructive.”IMG, one of the top global sports management firms, has been a key part of the IPL since its inception, primarily involved in areas such as formulating the franchise bidding, player contracts and auctions, the media rights issues, the broadcast rights and especially the day-to-day running of the league. Its role in the running of the league has come into question since the suspension of Lalit Modi as the IPL chairman. It was expected that the board would clarify whether IMG was aware of Modi’s alleged misdemeanours, including the charges related to rigging of the initial bids for a couple of franchises in 2008.The IMG team in Mumbai also included its senior legal counsels Paul Manning and John Laffhagen, the latter having drafted the player contracts.Manohar had seemingly pointed fingers at IMG immediately after the IPL governing council meeting on April 26, saying the council trusted Modi and the IMG to run the league in a professional manner. He was responding to a query about the culpability of the council in the IPL mess.”An institution functions on trust,” Manohar had said. “If you are expecting every governing council member to come here every morning at 10 and leave at 10 in the night to look at what is happening everywhere, then we don’t need the other staff which is there. Then we don’t need to pay IMG Rs 27 crore [approx $6 million] and we don’t need a CEO to run the IPL. It is their job to do all these things.”This is not the first time IMG has been caught in a web of controversy. The board was unhappy with the original deal signed by the IPL with IMG which involved a management fee of 10% of tournament revenue. IMG was paid Rs 43 crore after IPL 1 and Rs 33 crore after the tournament was shifted to South Africa in 2009. The board then asked IMG to submit a revised proposal but the latter failed to do so within the stipulated deadline and hence the contract was terminated in 2008. Eventually the contract was re-negotiated and both parties settled for a figure of Rs 27 crore as annual payment from the third season.Apart from the IPL controversy, the board was also expected to question IMG’s role in the proposed “parallel IPL” in the UK, a charge that was pressed by Giles Clarke, the ECB chairman recently. Clarke alleged that Modi was trying to induce counties to set-up a rebel Twenty20 league that would undermine the ECB. The reason IMG got dragged into the imbroglio was because of the presence of two of its senior officials – Wildblood and Peter Griffiths (director of operations) at the March 31 meeting, where Modi met representatives from Lancashire, Warwickshire and Yorkshire.IMG vehemently denied their role in setting up any such league and clarified through a statement that they had just facilitated a meeting between Modi and the counties. The BCCI issued a second show-cause to Modi in the Clarke affair, asking him to submit his reply in 15 days. The deadline expires on May 21.

Rangers: Aribo tipped to receive interest

A claim has been made ahead of the January transfer window regarding potential interest in a number of Rangers players.

What’s the talk?

Herald Scotland reporter Chris Jack has admitted that clubs will be in for some of the Gers’ top performers, with Giovanni van Bronkchorst entering his first window in charge of the Ibrox giants.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “I think the main thing for Rangers is holding on to key players. Aribo, he’s going to attract a bit of interest, Glen Kamara will, Morelos may well do, Ryan Kent probably will as well.”

Van Bronckhorst could be scared

This claim will surely leave the Gers coach running scared as Jack’s comments suggest that it could be a stressful transfer window for the club. He seems adamant that clubs will be coming in for Joe Aribo, in particular, with Glen Kamara, Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent also players who could be on their way out if offers arrive.

These are all key players for Van Bronckhorst and he will want to ensure that they remain at Ibrox, as they could be crucial to any success for the club this term. If the Gers want to go as far as possible in the Europa League whilst also winning the Premiership, they will need to keep hold of their top performers.

Morelos and Aribo are ranked third and fourth in terms of outfield players as per average SofaScore ratings this season, whilst Kamara (eighth) and Kent (11) both have scores of 7.03 or higher. This shows how big of a blow it would be to lose them next month, especially Aribo given Jack’s claim on his situation and his form this season.

The ex-Charlton man has averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.20 and produced six goals and three assists in the Premiership. This shows that he is consistently delivering top-class performances whilst also making key contributions in front of goal, which is why Van Bronckhorst will be scared by the prospect of him leaving in the coming weeks.

It is now down to Ross Wilson to stand firm and reject any offers for the 25-year-old’s services if, as Jack suspects, they come in. The Gers chief must work hard to ensure that there are no major sales in January, saving any exits for the summer transfer window when they will have more time to source replacements.

Robinson thrilled as West Ham eye Phillips

Speaking to Football Insider, pundit Paul Robinson, as seen on Sky Sports, has been left thrilled by West Ham United transfer news involving Liverpool defender Nathaniel Phillips.

The Lowdown: West Ham ‘lay groundwork’…

As reported by FI recently, West Ham and manager David Moyes are allegedly laying the groundwork to sign Phillips behind-the-scenes amid their central defensive crisis.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, it is claimed by the outlet that they are ‘lining up a move’ as the club, and recruitment chief Rob Newman, apparently work on his signing.

Other sources somewhat back this, with football.london correspondent Tom Clark explaining last week that West Ham are indeed exploring an offer to sign Phillips in January.

The Latest: Robinson reacts…

Speaking to FI, former England international Robinson has been left thrilled by West Ham as they eye Phillips whilst insisting he would be a ‘brilliant signing’.

Phillips will give West Ham the push they need.

“We have seen Moyes rotate the squad over the past few weeks but even then they are struggling in a couple of areas with injuries.

“I think Phillips would be a brilliant signing. In all honesty, I think it would be a move that works for all parties.

Phillips has not played anywhere near as many games as he would’ve liked having had such a good season last year. He got a taste of it. He clearly wants to leave so it seems a matter of when not if.

“West Ham would be a good fit. Moyes recognises that they need players. He won’t sign anyone for the sake of it though. He would only sign a top player who fits into the system and I think Nat Phillips fits the bill.”

The Verdict: In agreement…

The 24-year-old could leave Anfield for as little as £15 million according to reports, and at that price, he would come as an absolute steal for the club.

Homegrown, still fairly young and proven in the Premier League – he could come as the astute defensive signing which would gift Moyes a big January boost.

Phillips even averaged more clearances per 90 than any Reds player in the top flight last season (WhoScored) – perhaps a sure-fire indicator of his obvious quality.

Leeds sealed dream deal with Joe Gelhardt

There was a time when Leeds United supporters spitefully shook their heads as the club’s recruitment team neglected important areas of the team in the transfer window.

That had never been truer than when someone like Pascal Struijk joined the Whites.

The Dutch defender didn’t receive a particularly warm welcome but he serves as a fine example for needing to be patient.

He has been crucial this season and in a campaign where the likes of Robin Koch and Liam Cooper have been injured, the emergence of the colossal Struijk has been timely.

But it’s at the other end of the pitch that we want to focus on for the time being where another timely breakthrough act has been discovered.

That falls in the form of Joe Gelhardt, a teenager who is very quickly becoming an important figure at Elland Road.

Star striker Patrick Bamford has featured only once since a bad ankle injury back in September as the previously irremovable object from Bielsa’s side was finally dethroned.

Dan James, Rodrigo, Tyler Roberts and Gelhardt have all been utilised at the top of the pitch in Bamford’s absence but of all of them, it’s the lad the Elland Road faithful know as ‘Joffy’ who has caught the eye the most.

Signed for just over £1m in August 2020, his value and estimations are growing rapidly.

It’s clear to see why, too. He already has 25 career goals across senior and youth level and has taken to Bielsa’s methods like a duck to water, winning a crucial penalty against Wolves and scoring against Chelsea in his limited opportunities this season.

His performances have subsequently earned rave reviews with Leeds Live reporter Bergen Cross who hailed the masterclass done in the transfer window by Victor Orta and co.

He said: “Gelhardt may well be the best bit of business the club has done in the last 20 years, if not ever, because he just looks absolutely outrageous, very, very good player.”

The youngster has been so impressive that he was described as a “human wrecking ball” by Bielsa.

The boss added: “I like him, he’s really exciting. He’s fast, he’s aggressive, he gets on the ball, he takes people on. Once he gets into the box, he loves it. That’s where he can do most of his damage.”

It’s clear that Gelhardt has a quite remarkable amount of potential and for that alone, it is a dream deal.

Combine Bielsa’s affection for the player with his growing importance and it’s hard to disagree with Cross’ bold statement.

He’s certainly someone that can loosen the burden on Bamford’s shoulders in the coming years.

AND in other news, Leeds can finally replace Hernandez with 17 G/A “grafter” who “Bielsa quietly admires”…

Maksim Paskotsi: Spurs’ next big thing?

It’s not often that a teenager has made more senior appearances for his national team than his domestic outfit, but that’s the case of Estonia colossus Maksim Paskotsi at Tottenham Hotspur.

During the international break, the 18-year-old, who turns 19 in January, picked up his tenth and 11th caps for the Blueshirts as they were beaten by world no.1 Belgium and the Czech Republic.

In those matches, he played against some pretty star-studded names, ranging from Eden Hazard and Kevin De Bruyne to other Premier League players like Christian Benteke and Vladimir Coufal.

Paskotsi even displayed impressive versatility in playing as a central defender in a back-three and as a right wing-back – that’s got to please his new Tottenham manager Antonio Conte, who deploys a very similar system.

Only a handful of teenagers in Europe have made more appearances for their country than the Spurs academy prodigy, which is a telling sign that the north Londoners could have a future star on their hands.

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-news-updates-transfers-antonio-conte-thfc” title=”Read the latest Spurs news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

Given the recent injury blow to Cristian Romero and doubts over their current backups, including academy graduate Japhet Tanganga, the teenager could save the club millions in upcoming transfer windows as a potential solution to their mini-crisis.

Paskotski is said to be “one of the most talented players in Estonia”, which perhaps isn’t an impossible task given the pedigree that the nation carries. However, according to talent scout Jacek Kulig, he is comparable to Manchester United beast Raphael Varane in playing style.

His tacking and intercepting, pace, anticipation and aerial ability are all thought to be key strengths, which will only bolster his claims in becoming a first-team regular in years to come, by which stage he will eventually be considered a home-grown talent, too.

The Estonian has also proven to be a goal threat, having bagged five times in 20 appearances for the U18s.

Paskotski could save the club, particularly owners ENIC, plenty of money in the future should Conte decide to utilise him in the coming weeks and months. If he’s lining up against some of the best on the international stage, then it can’t hurt to try him out in the cup competitions, at the very least.

Newcastle can sign a Joelinton upgrade in Werner

Newcastle United are interested in signing Chelsea striker Timo Werner as PIF look to get their new era underway at St James’ Park.

What’s the story?

According to German publication BILD, the Magpies would step up their interest in the Germany international if Werner makes it clear that he wants to leave west London.

Journalist Christian Falk added: “Of course, he (Werner) wants to play in the Champions League, but at Chelsea, he said that if it doesn’t work out with the starting eleven, he’ll have to think about something,’ said Bild journalist Christian Falk when asked about Werner’s potential move to Newcastle.

“Then you have to find someone who will pay €20 million in wages, and Newcastle is naturally ideal for that, especially as his management has a new player in Fabian Schar. He’s in constant contact with the club and then with the management, which means the paths are short. As soon as Werner gives a signal that he would like to leave Chelsea, Newcastle are definitely in the conversation.”

An upgrade on Joelinton

Given his struggles at Stamford Bridge, it’s easy to forget that Werner was consistently one of European football’s most lethal strikers in his time at RB Leipzig.

His mixture of pace, movement and clinical finishing made him a nightmare for opposition defences in the Bundesliga, and it was no surprise that he ended his time there with a truly scintillating record of 95 goals in just 159 games – that’s not to mention the 40 assists he chipped in with too.

Having been clocked at 11.11 seconds over 100m, Werner himself said: “There’s no recipe for it. The quickest players just know how to do it automatically. I like to knock the ball three or four meters ahead of me when I’m on the counter or have space in front of me, that way I can increase the distance between a defender and myself.”

The kind of wide-forward that Werner is, makes him a big step-up on the Magpies’ Joelinton, who has desperately struggled for any form during his time at St James’ Park – the big Brazilian has only managed ten goals in 88 games for the club.

If a new manager at Newcastle can help Werner rediscover that form, then they could have an absolute gem on their hands in someone who remains only 25.

The £49.5m-rated star would be a major upgrade on what Newcastle already have in Joelinton.

Meanwhile, Newcastle could make a landmark appointment…
