Dodgers' Simple Plan on Scouting Report to Beat Yankees in World Series Rang True

The Los Angeles Dodgers secured their eighth World Series championship in franchise history earlier this week by following their scouting report that proved to be more than accurate.

The Dodgers' plan? Let the New York Yankees get in their own way.

New York Post's Joel Sherman wrote Thursday that the Dodgers considered New York to be the worst-positioned outfield in baseball heading into the World Series. But that's not all.

"What the Dodgers told their players in scouting meetings was the Yankees were talent over fundamentals," Sherman wrote. "That if you run the bases with purpose and aggression, the Yankees will self-inflict harm as was exposed by [Mookie] Betts, Tommy Edman, Freddie Freeman, etc. That the value was very high to put the ball in play to make the Yankees execute. They mentioned that the Yankees were … the majors’ worst base-running team by every metric."

All of those words rang true in the World Series.

In Game 1, for example, Shohei Ohtani took third base on an error credited to Juan Soto for a bad throw into second base. The next batter, Mookie Betts, hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Ohtani and tie the game 2–2. The Dodgers eventually won on Freddie Freeman's walk-off grand slam.

In Game 3, the Yankees' poor base running was on display when the not-so-speedy Giancarlo Stanton was thrown out at the plate by Teoscar Hernandez. In Game 4, rookie phenom Anthony Volpe failed to score from second base on a double off the wall.

The Yankees' mistakes really came back to haunt them in the fifth inning of Game 5. In one of the worst defensive frames in World Series history, the Yankees made three errors and allowed five runs—all unearned—to score with two outs. Aaron Judge missed a can of corn in center field, Anthony Volpe misfired a throw to third base and starting pitcher Gerrit Cole forgot to cover first base on a routine ground ball to Anthony Rizzo that should've ended the inning before a single run was scored.

The Dodgers were right: The Yankees did get in their own way, paving a path to Los Angeles hosting a championship parade at Gloria Molina Grand Park on Friday.

New York's biggest priority this offseason will be to retain superstar Juan Soto, the biggest name on the free-agent market. But another top priority should be manager Aaron Boone's squad getting back to the fundamentals that cost them a chance at a World Series title.

Robinson, Duffy, Henry step up as New Zealand subdue South Africa

New Zealand’s new coach Rob Walter – who is also South Africa’s old white-ball coach – began his tenure with a win but his previous team made his current one work for it.Chasing 174, South Africa were 111 for 7 in the 14th over before George Linde struck 30 from 20 balls and shared a 37-run stand with Gerald Coetzee. South Africa needed 31 runs from the last three overs but Linde holed out against Jacob Duffy who ended the contest with two wickets in two balls. That meant New Zealand’s joint second-highest score against South Africa of 173 proved to be enough on a surface where short balls proved to be the most challenging. Three of New Zealand’s top five were undone by back of a length deliveries and they were wobbling on 70 for 5 in the 10th over before Tim Robinson and South African-born debutant Bevon Jacobs put on 103 – New Zealand’s second-highest sixth-wicket partnership in T20Is. Their stand, which included 43 runs off the last three overs, is also only the eighth century stand in a men’s T20I for the sixth-wicket or lower.South Africa did not have a partnership anywhere close to that. Their highest was 39 between Dewald Brevis and Linde, also for the sixth wicket, in a shortened line-up. With Senuran Muthusamy in at No.4 and the all-rounders starting from Linde at No.7, South Africa may want to tinker with their combination ahead of Sunday’s clash against Zimbabwe.New Zealand, who were without Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Glenn Phillips and Rachin Ravindra as they were involved in the MLC final, will be pleased with Matt Henry’s return to the side after injuring his shoulder at the Champions Trophy. He finished with 3 for 34.Gerald Coetzee played his first international game since November 2024•Zimbabwe Cricket

Jury’s out as Coetzee hits the comeback trail

Coetzee last played for South Africa in a Test against Sri Lanka in Durban in November last year, where he injured his groin. He made a brief comeback in the SA20 but hurt his hamstring and spent more time on the sidelines. After returning to fitness at the IPL, a lack of long-form bowling meant he was not considered for June’s World Test Championship final but the plan was always to bring him back in white-ball cricket. He made his comeback after nine months and was given the ball in the final over of the powerplay. His first three balls were pacy (without Hawk-Eye it was not possible to tell exactly what speed) and on a good length before he went fuller and then to his signature back-of-a-length. He only gave away a wide in the first over. Robinson pulled the second ball of his second over in front of square but when Daryll Mitchell tried to repeat the dose two balls later, he top-edged and Kwena Maphaka, at deep square leg, did the rest.Coetzee was too short in his third over which cost 13 runs and then lost his lengths in his final over to finish with figures of 1 for 39, which was South Africa’s most expensive.Tim Robinson launches a six•Zimbabwe Cricket

Robinson’s career best powers New Zealand over 170

Robinson announced himself when he advanced down the track to meet the last ball of Linde’s first over and launch it over his head and the sightscreen for the innings’ first six. His first three partners – Mitchell, Mitchell Hay and James Neesham – were dismissed in single figures (Neesham for a duck), but when debutant Bevon Jacobs joined him, runs came easier. The pair saw off Muthusamy and took on the seamers. They were particularly severe on Coetzee, against whom Robinson reached fifty with the shot of the innings. Coetzee banged it in short, Robinson backed away and hit him over backward point for six off the 42nd ball he faced. He was equally adept at taking on the full delivery and sent two Corbin Bosch yorkers for four before finishing with a flourish and pulling Coetzee over square leg for his third six.

Pretorius comes out swinging

After a golden duck in the series opener, Lhuan-dre Pretorius came out with good intent in his second T20I, determined to get some runs. He creamed Henry’s second ball – too full and too wide – through the covers for four and gave the next one, which was much better in line and length, the same treatment. Duffy’s overpitched and Pretorius hit him back over his head for four and then finally went leg-side when he pulled Duffy for his fourth four. Pretorius faced 13 of the first 14 balls in the innings and scored 21 runs from them, including five boundaries. He managed one more when he drove Henry aerially toward mid-on, where Duffy parried it away for four, but then guided a Henry delivery that angled away straight into Tom Seifert’s gloves to end an energetic knock.Mitchell Santner celebrates a wicket with his team-mates•Zimbabwe Cricket

New Zealand’s fielding to the fore

New Zealand threatened to find a South African batter short of the crease when Reeza Hendricks, on 13, only just made it in as a direct hit came in. Three overs later, Rassie van der Dussen was not quite as lucky. He was on 6 when he nudged Mitchell Santner into the leg side and Brevis called him through for a single. Van der Dussen hesitated while Seifert ran around to throw the ball to the stumps at the bowler’s end and missed. Santner had to clean up and was still on the ground when targeted the stumps again and hit. New Zealand did not think they had reacted quickly enough to get a wicket but replays showed van der Dussen was short of his ground. South Africa were 62 for 5 in the ninth over and needed 112 runs from 68 balls to win. Brevis’ 35 and Linde’s 30 took them close but South Africa were bowled out for 152 inside 19 overs to lose by 21 runs.

He's "like Grealish": Emery must unleash Aston Villa star to revive Watkins

Aston Villa know they need to win against Sunderland on Sunday afternoon. But the Stadium of Light will be ready to heap more misery on Unai Emery’s side, who are yet to score in the Premier League this season.

Moreover, Villa fell from the Carabao Cup in midweek, beaten on penalties at Brentford after a 1-1 draw.

It’s not been the best of starts, but here is a squad carrying plenty of quality, and Emery is a master of problem-solving. However, the Villans have one of the oldest average starting line-ups in the league, and some new life needs to be injected.

Well, Harvey Elliott marked his full debut with a goal on Tuesday evening, and the Liverpool loanee will be gunning for another start on Tyne and Wear.

Harvey Elliott announces himself at Aston Villa

Elliott, 22, is contracted to Aston Villa on a short-term deal that runs until the end of the season. However, there is a purchase option worth £35m embedded in the agreement.

He will score better goals than the one at the Gtech, a tame finish weaselling its way past a disappointed Hakon Valdimarsson, who should have done better.

But score Elliott still did, and he also created a chance, completed 91% of his passes and won both of his duels (data via Sofascore) across more than an hour on the field.

A sharp-visioned playmaker, the England U21 star brings skills and style and swagger to the Lions fold, and he will hope to start from an attacking midfield berth, creating for the likes of Ollie Watkins, who has been out of sorts so far.

However, Elliott isn’t the only fresh talent who needs to be thrown in against the Black Cats, with Jadon Sancho also showing flashes of promise against Brentford.

Why Emery should start Jadon Sancho

Signing Sancho on loan was a gamble on Aston Villa’s part. The winger’s elite talent remains inarguable, but off-colour performances at Manchester United and an indifferent loan spell at Stamford Bridge last season underline the importance of an impressive campaign under Emery’s wing.

The England international, last capped against Andorra in 2021, has slid down a morass of turmoil and disappointment since leaving Borussia Dortmund as a bona fide prodigy and joining the Red Devils for £73m. Middling returns have become the norm.

However, he’ll hope to take a leaf from Marcus Rashford’s book and rise to the fore once again at Villa Park. There’s a player in there, all right, having been labelled a “generational” talent by journalist Jamie Jackson upon arrival at Old Trafford.

Fleet-footed and dynamic, the 25-year-old isn’t at the last-chance saloon, but he has the chance to make a change in a Villan side newly blunted in attack. There is an opportunity for such a player to step up and stop being a “supporting act”.

Against Brentford in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, he showed flashes of that quality, crashing a strike against the woodwork and creating two chances for his teammates, data courtesy of Sofascore.

If Sancho can polish his dribbling during the matches to come, he will prove an invaluable asset, perhaps emerging as the man to lift Watkins back up from the dry patch in which he sits.

Ollie Watkins in the 2024/25 Premier League

Watkins has certainly not been at his best so far this season, but he remains a fierce striker in the Premier League, with 32 goals and 23 assists in the top flight since the start of the 2023/24 term.

Success on the ball will come. Emery will ensure it happens. And anyway, Sancho ranks among the top 12% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for progressive carries and the top 16% for successful take-ons per 90, as per FBref.

This fleetness when moving apace has even seen Sancho likened to a former Aston Villa stalwart: after signing for Man United, pundit Ian Wright said that Sancho was “like Grealish” in regard to his skills and gusto on the ball.

Grealish, flying at Everton, was once an almighty talisman at his boyhood Villa before departing for the riches of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in a record-breaking £100m move.

He came and conquered, but he also fell at the Etihad, and has demonstrated this season in David Moyes’ system an ability to rise up once more.

Sancho will likely have noted his countryman’s rebirth, gearing up for one of his own at Aston Villa.

Given the tactical likeness between the two attacking forces, Sancho will know he walks on ground that could see him finally leave his mark on the Premier League, adding athleticism and creativity and grace to a side lacking a goal threat right now. On his A-game, he will elevate Watkins, and indeed the wider scope of Aston Villa’s offensive play.

Worth more than Tel & Kolo Muani: Spurs let "sensational" star leave for £0

The summer transfer window was hugely successful for Tottenham Hotspur, as Thomas Frank attempts to be a success during his first season in charge in North London.

He was handed over £100m to make the changes he craved to the first-team squad, adding new bodies to multiple areas of the Lilywhites side ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Joao Palhinha is just one of the new additions made by the Dane, with the Portuguese international already making an immediate impact with his new side.

The 30-year-old may be a defensive-minded option, but he’s already opened his account for the Lilywhites, netting the second goal in the 2-0 triumph over Manchester City at the Etihad.

He’s just one of numerous additions made by the new boss over recent times, with other players hoping to make a similar impact during their own stint in the Premier League.

Spurs’ moves to land Tel & Kolo Muani this summer

Deadline day was a frantic one for Spurs, as they looked to provide further quality and depth to help build on their excellent start to life under Frank’s guidance.

Randal Kolo Muani moved to North London on a season-long loan from French giants PSG, subsequently fending off competition from Juventus, the club he spent six months on loan at last campaign.

The deal to land the 26-year-old doesn’t include an option to buy next summer, but the deal could see Frank land a new talisman – especially if he can replicate his tally of 10 goals in 22 matches in Italy during 2024/25.

His compatriot Mathys Tel also made a move to join the Lilywhites, but the 20-year-old’s switch to England was a permanent one after spending the second half of the previous year on loan during the Ange Postecoglou tenure.

The hierarchy forked out £30m to land the youngster during the off-season, but such a move has already caused controversy, given the decisions around his selection.

Tel wasn’t selected in the club’s Champions League squad for the group stage – a decision that has surprised many, whilst undoubtedly being an upsetting one for the player himself.

The former Spurs star who’s worth more than Tel & Kolo Muani

Spurs’ youth setup has produced numerous top-level talents over the last couple of years, but none more so than Harry Kane – rising through the academy before cementing his place in the first-team.

The Englishman ended up making over 400 appearances for the Lilywhites, ending his decade-long spell in North London on 280 goals across all competitions.

Such a tally is the highest of any player in the club’s history, overtaking the record set by the late Jimmy Greaves – subsequently cementing his place in the club’s history forever.

He would depart in a £82m transfer to join German giants Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023, with the club banking a huge profit on one of their homegrown talents.

However, the same can’t be said for winger Noni Madueke, with the Englishman failing to make a name for himself during his own stint in North London.

The attacker spent four years in the Lilywhites’ academy side between 2014 and 2018, but was unable to make a jump into the first-team – subsequently leaving the club on a free transfer to join Dutch outfit PSV.

The 23-year-old would go on to spend just shy of four years at the Eredivisie side, racking up a total of 20 goals – before getting his big-money move to Chelsea in January 2023.

Madueke, who’s been labelled “sensational” by content creator George Benson, joined the Blues for a fee in the region of £29m, but made yet another transfer move during the recent summer window.

He moved across the capital to join Spurs’ North London rivals Arsenal, costing a staggering £52m in an attempt to provide needed depth and cover to compatriot Bukayo Saka.

As a result of his big-money switch, the attacker is now valued at £34.6m by Transfermarkt – further highlighting the mistake the Lilywhites made in allowing him to depart for nothing.

His subsequent value is higher than those of Tel and Kolo Muani, with the French duo only currently valued at £30.3m and £25.9m respectively by the same site.

There’s no denying that the aforementioned duo are excellent players and ones that would thrive under Frank’s guidance – but that doesn’t take away from the mistake of allowing Madueke to leave for absolutely nothing.

His tally of 13 Premier League goals is higher than both of the Lilywhites’ new additions, potentially being a more suited option in England’s top-flight – but it’s now down to the new boss to get the best out of the players currently at his disposal.

Not Miley: Newcastle have Anderson 2.0 in 19-year-old "star in the making"

Newcastle United are perhaps ruing their decision to sell academy graduate Elliot Anderson last summer to Nottingham Forest. The England international, who was only capped for the first time last week, moved down to the East Midlands from his boyhood club for reasons relating to PSR.

Yet, he has gone from strength to strength at the City Ground, a testament to his ability that Newcastle fans no doubt saw at St James’ Park, too. That talent has been summed up by Thomas Tuchel, handing the youngster his England debut against Andorra last week.

Having Anderson alongside midfield options like Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes, and Joelinton would have been excellent depth for Eddie Howe. With that being said, it gives the chance for a new academy star to break through, after someone like Lewis Miley.

Miley’s Newcastle career so far

It is easy to forget that England under-1 international Miley is just 19 years of age. He’s been in and around the first team frame at St James’ Park for a number of years, since first making his debut in the 2022/23 campaign.

In total, the Stanley-born midfielder has played 49 games for his boyhood club.

He’s managed to get himself on the scoresheet three times and has chipped in with four assists along the way, too.

Of course, it has not been easy for Miley to establish himself in the Magpies’ midfield with the aforementioned quality they have. However, his versatility may work in his favour, given he’s played as a number six as well as in his preferred number eight role.

The youngster has also struggled with injuries, missing the back end of the 2023/24 campaign and the beginning of the 2024/25 season. Since then, he has been unable to break into the side under Howe.

It remains to be seen if Miley can become Newcastle’s new Anderson, but, for now, it doesn’t seem likely that he can establish himself in the starting lineup. Instead, another teen star at the club might be the person Newcastle turn towards to replace Anderson.

Newcastle’s next Elliot Anderson

There must be something in the air at Newcastle to have developed Anderson and Miley, two young academy midfielders. Well, next on that list could be 19-year-old Alfie Harrison, a versatile midfielder who hails from Manchester.

Described as a “star in the making” by football writer Thomas Hammond, Harrison has shone for the Magpies’ youth team at under-21 level, after originally coming through the ranks at Manchester City.

After playing under-21 football in 2023/24, Harrison had his best campaign yet last season. The Mancunian midfielder, who has the first-team number 44 at St James’ Park, played 20 games in the Premier League 2, scoring three times and assisting seven.

He has also excelled in the EFL Trophy, too. The 19-year-old created three chances in his first game of the competition this season against Huddersfield Town, and also won two ground duels and one tackle, showing great all-round ability.

One of the standout features of his game is the versatility he offers. Whilst he is a midfielder by trade, Harrison can also operate out wide, which will teach him plenty of skills to add to his craft in the middle of the park.

Losing Anderson was certainly a huge blow for the Magpies, but perhaps Howe will decide to unleash a player with the creative talent of Harrison at some stage this season.

He will certainly add quality on the ball, just like their former midfielder.

In The Pipeline

Miley is certainly a great option for Howe to have in and around the squad, but perhaps a player with the skill of Harrison will be able to leapfrog him and become the new Anderson soon enough.

Celtic have a bigger homegrown talent than Donovan & his "ceiling is so high"

Celtic have been the dominant force in Scotland for many, many, years and are currently aiming to win their fifth title in succession in the Scottish Premiership.

The Hoops have won the league title and a domestic cup in each of the last two seasons, after winning the domestic treble in Ange Postecoglou’s final year at the club.

Since Brendan Rodgers returned to the club to replace Postecoglou in the summer of 2023, Celtic have won two Premiership titles, the SFA Cup, and the League Cup.

One, admittedly minor, criticism you could level at the Northern Irish head coach, though, is that he does not offer too many opportunities to academy and young players within the squad, despite the team’s domestic dominance.

As you can see in the table above, no academy player aged 21 or under played more than 87 minutes across the 2023/24 and 2024/25 campaigns for the Scottish giants.

However, Colby Donovan has emerged as a genuine first-team option for Rodgers this season, after impressing in the 2-1 win over Kilmarnock on Sunday.

Why Colby Donovan is a genuine first-team option for Celtic

The 19-year-old academy graduate should be considered a regular option for the first-team moving forward because he has shown that he can deliver in the Premiership.

Kilmarnock away is not an easy game to play. They have only lost five of their 19 home games in the Premiership since the start of last season, and use an artificial pitch.

The Scotland U21 international, who has played 36 times for the club’s B team, adapted to his surroundings fairly quickly after a couple of loose touches early on in the match.

Donovan, as shown in the highlights above, played a crucial role in the winning goal for Celtic with a darting run into the box to tee up James Forrest, whose shot was blocked by an arm to hand Kelechi Iheanacho the chance to score the winner from the spot.

As well as that vital contribution at the top end of the pitch, the 19-year-old right-back also showed that he has the physicality and pace to deal with opposition attackers in the Premiership.

The statistics in the table above illustrate how solid he was out of possession for the Scottish giants, winning 70% of his duels throughout his 90 minutes on the pitch on his full debut in the division.

Whilst this was only one performance, Donovan carried himself as if he had been in the team for years and fully looked the part at right-back for the Hoops, after that nervy start to the game, as mentioned.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

The Scottish right-back is not the only promising young star within the first-team squad, though. In fact, Rodgers may be brewing an even bigger homegrown talent than Donovan in the form of central defender Dane Murray.

Cameron Carter-Vickers and Liam Scales are currently ahead of the 22-year-old titan in the pecking order to start matches, but he was on the bench against Kilmarnock ahead of summer signing Jahmai Simpson-Pusey, which shows how highly the manager rates him.

Why Dane Murray may be a bigger talent than Colby Donovan

The academy graduate has had a long road back to the first-team after suffering two cruciate ligament injuries that kept him out of action for around two years between 2021 and 2023.

Murray had made his debut for the senior side as a teenager against Midtjylland in a Champions League play-off tie in 2021, but those two injuries have set him back in recent seasons.

The Scottish defender spent time on loan at Queen’s Park in the Championship in the 2023/24 and 2024/25 campaigns to build his fitness back up, before his return to Parkhead in January of last season.

Since his return to Celtic, Rodgers has given him opportunities to shine in the first-team and the club rewarded him with a new contract last month.

After Murray signed his new deal, the Hoops head coach said: “It’s great for him because he’s a great boy. He’s got a lot of potential. And I think over the next 12 to 18 months, he’s going to really grow.

“His ceiling is so high. There are areas of the game he needs to clearly work on. But he’s 6ft 4in, he’s quick, he can take the ball. He has a comfort with the ball which aligns with top players. Just, concentration is something that’s key for defenders.”

These comments show how highly rated Murray is by the coaching staff and illustrate how complete he is as a player, because the centre-back has all the attributes needed to make it to the very top.

As you can see in the table above, the 22-year-old colossus’ performances against Livingston and Kairat this season back up Rodgers’ comments, because he was dominant physically, quick enough not to be dribbled past at all, and incredibly reliable with the ball at his feet.

Murray is capable of turning in complete and impressive performances as a centre-back for Celtic, domestically and in Europe, and could develop into a fantastic and complete central defender for the club.

Donovan, meanwhile, is not a complete right-back because he has only delivered two assists in 46 appearances for Celtic at academy and first-team level combined, per Transfermarkt, which shows that the defender needs to work on the threat that he offers in the final third.

Murray, though, has shown that he can deliver defensively and in possession as a centre-back for the Hoops, and Rodgers has made it clear that he believes the 22-year-old star has a huge ceiling to hit.

Crystal Palace could now bid for "incredible" £45m El Khannouss alternative

Crystal Palace are now weighing up whether to make a bid for an “incredible” forward instead of pursuing Leicester City’s Bilal El Khannouss, according to a journalist.

Palace narrow down list of Eze replacements

In a remarkable twist on Wednesday night, it was revealed that Arsenal made a late move to hijack Tottenham Hotspur’s move for Eberechi Eze, and Fabrizio Romano has since confirmed the Gunners have won the race.

Romano has also revealed that Eze is set to undergo a medical on Friday, following tonight’s UEFA Conference League play-off first leg against Fredrikdstad, which will give the England international the opportunity to say goodbye to the fans.

With the 27-year-old now set to leave, Oliver Glasner is faced with the difficult task of bringing in a replacement, and the Eagles are in a strong position to win the race for El Khannouss, having held club-to-club talks with Leicester City.

In a new update on X from Ben Jacobs, it has been revealed that Crystal Palace are close to reaching an agreement for the Moroccan, with a £30m package “broadly in place”, but they are still not 100% committed to signing the midfielder.

Crystal Palace eyeing marquee signing of "incredible" £40m Eze replacement

The Eagles have now set their sights on a new target, who could replace Eberechi Eze.

By
Dominic Lund

Aug 20, 2025

Palace are currently deciding whether to proceed with the move for El Khannouss or bid for Southampton’s Tyler Dibling instead, while Club Brugge’s Christos Tzolis is also of interest, although the Belgian club are reluctant to sanction a departure.

Should the Eagles decide to make a move for Dibling, a deal is likely to be on the expensive side, with a £45m price tag being touted, and there could be competition for the forward’s signature from Everton.

Sensational Dibling could excel at Selhurst Park

The Southampton starlet is able to play at both right-wing and attacking midfield, indicating he could be brought in as a direct replacement for Eze, and the youngster certainly caught the eye in the Premier League last season.

Journalist Alfie House described the 19-year-old as an “incredible” footballer last November, while Fabrizio Romano singled the attacker out for praise after a very impressive performance at Old Trafford.

The Saints were relegated without putting up much of a fight last season, however, which meant the young Englishman was only able to chip in with three goal contributions in the league, despite managing to impress in other ways.

That said, Dibling clearly has the talent to thrive in a better side, and given his age, he could be a fantastic long-term replacement for Eze.

Rangers could forget about Rak-Sakyi by signing "dangerous" £4m talent

Rangers transfer business so far this summer has been solid under Russell Martin as he embarks on his maiden season in charge of the club.

A couple impressed during the 2-0 win over Greek side Panathinaikos in the Champions League qualifier on Tuesday evening, with winger Djeidi Gassama scoring the crucial second goal with a smart finish.

It was a positive second half display by the Ibrox side, and they now have one foot in the next round of qualifiers.

The likes of Max Aarons, Nasser Djiga, Thelo Aasgaard and Joe Rothwell all look excellent signings for the Light Blues, but Martin wont be stopping there when it comes to adding more players.

Others have been linked with a move to the club of late, with names such as Luuk de Jong, Salvatore Esposito and even Jamie Vardy being touted over potential moves to Glasgow.

Much will depend on the money Martin has at his disposal, as he could be waiting for a few players to depart before eyeing any further move.

Robin Propper has completed his move back to former club FC Twente, which will free up some of the wage bill.

One player who has been linked heavily with a move to Rangers is Crystal Palace winger Jesurun Rak-Sakyi. Signing the player would signify a statement of intent by Martin, no doubt about that.

What Martin has said about Rak-Sakyi deal

The Palace winger is of interest to the club and Martin has stated that he has tried to sign him previously.

“He’s a player I liked at Southampton. We tried to take him there and it didn’t quite happen,” said Martin amid the links to the youngster. “So, he’s a player I like and I think he’s a player the recruitment staff like. But, how far that’s gone, I’m not too sure.”

A few days ago, Rangers made an offer to Palace for the 22-year-old. The proposed deal was for Rak-Sakyi to move to Ibrox on a season-long loan ahead of making the move permanent next summer for a fee worth up to £10m.

This was rejected by the Premier League outfit and it remains to be seen whether Martin will adopt a different strategy or move on to other targets.

Last term, the Englishman spent a spell on loan with Sheffield United in the Championship. He scored seven goals and grabbed two assists for the Blades, but it wasn’t enough to see them secure promotion back to the top flight.

Improving his wide options is something Martin is keen to do before the transfer window shuts. A move for Rak-Sakyi would certainly be an interesting one, especially given how much the club were willing to pay for him permanently.

He is certainly a talented player, yet during his spell with Palace, he has made just ten senior appearances, registering zero goal contributions.

Should any proposed move cool down in the coming weeks, Martin could perhaps go after an alternative option – Abu Kamara.

Rangers’ search for a new winger

While Gassama may have been signed, bringing another wide player into the squad could prove advantageous for Martin and his team. A few weeks ago, it was reported via Sky Sports that the Gers were weighing up a potential offer to sign Hull City star Kamara.

Due to Hull’s financial issues, any deal for Kamara – who joined his current side for £4m last year – would likely be a cut-price one, which could suggest this is a more likely move to go ahead compared to the Rak-Sakyi one.

Abu Kamara in action for Hull City.

Furthermore, he is a year younger than the Palace starlet, and he also played in the Championship last season.

Given Palace’s demands for their young talent, perhaps a move for Kamara is the more feasible option out of the two. If so, Martin could forget all about Rak-Sakyi, as Kamara has all the attributes which could see him shine for the Light Blues this season.

Why Rangers want to sign Abu Kamara

Throughout his embryonic career thus far, Kamara has already racked up 95 senior appearances for Hull, Portsmouth and Norwich, scoring 16 goals and grabbing 15 assists for these clubs.

Despite being a year older, Rak-Sakyi has made the same number of senior appearances, although he has scored 22 goals and grabbed 11 assists in the process.

With the two players starring in the second tier last season, it is important to measure how they performed to see who stood out in a range of statistics.

Indeed, Kamara registered a shots on target percentage of 38.9%, while also recording 74 shot-creating actions, taking 494 touches in the final third, completing 519 carries and delivering 55 crosses into the opposition penalty area.

In comparison, Rak-Sakyi registered a shots on target percentage of 34.8% in the Championship last term, along with generating 71 shot-creating actions, taking 405 touches in the final third, completing 427 carries and delivering 34 crosses into the box.

As you can see, Kamara has better stats across all of these performance metrics compared to the Palace winger.

Kamara even created more big chances in the second tier last season compared to Rak-Sakyi (seven vs three) and missed fewer big chances (five vs six), suggesting that he was the better creator of opportunities.

Former teammate Conor Shaughnessy lavished plenty of praise on Kamara during their spell at Portsmouth, saying that “he will be dangerous on the right wing for them” when referencing his return to Hull City after his loan spell.

There is no doubt Kamara will get better as time goes on and experiencing European football at Ibrox will certainly aid his development.

Rak-Sakyi would be a fine signing, especially given his talent. But for the fee mentioned, it looks as though this deal could drag on throughout the summer.

In Kamara, Martin could sign someone who has demonstrated better stats in the same league as the Palace starlet, and he would be available for a cheaper price.
