Time to go: Newcastle must axe 4/10 man who earns as much as Isak

Newcastle were taken over by a Saudi-led consortium in 2021, taking over from previous owner Mike Ashley.

This has sparked massive change at the club since, hiring Eddie Howe to oversee a transition from the bottom half of the Premier League, all the way to Champions League football.

The Magpies spent the best part of £155m in the 2022/23 campaign, before spending a further £128m in the 2023/24 season after qualifying for Champions League football, in an attempt to ready their squad for the demands of extra games.

Last season, Newcastle struggled last season, finishing seventh on 60 points, and only missing out on UEFA Conference League due to Manchester United’s FA Cup triumph. The aim now is to return to European football ready for the next campaign.

But who will still be here in a year? They will be fighting tooth and nail to keep Alexander Isak but another big-name player could head for the exit door.

Alexander Isak at Newcastle

One of, if not the clubs biggest successes in the transfer market since the new ownership took over, is Isak, who joined for a club-record fee of £63m from Real Sociedad back in 2022. Isak made 27 appearances in his debut season for the Magpies, scoring ten goals, providing three assists, and totaling 1680 minutes played.

His second season at the club came with further success, making 40 appearances in all competitions, scoring 25 goals, providing two assists, and totaling 2,973 minutes, with many now viewing Isak as one of the best strikers in the division.

The 25-year-old striker is now in his third season at the club, and is seen as one of their prized assets, earning a sizeable £120k-p/w according to Capology.

However, there is another player at the club who is earning the same wages, but not quite performing to the desired standard.

Kieran Trippier's time to go

Another player who arrived at the club in their new project under new ownership is Kieran Trippier, who joined the Toon back in January 2022 for a fee of around £12m plus add-ons from Atletico Madrid.

Kieran Trippier

But despite the 34-year-old being a brilliant servant in his years at the club, his time could be coming to an end at The Toon, having dropped a poor performance against Fulham last weekend, one that was marked as a 4/10 by the Chronicle.

Trippier is earning as much as the star man, Isak, per week, making £120k, but with Valentino Livramento ready to take over as the starting right-back, the England international’s wages become more feasible to offload, as Newcastle continue to build their squad for the future.

Whilst Trippier is still putting up good passing numbers and creative numbers (something he will always do due to his set piece threat), Livramento is adding far more in the sense of athleticism, speed, and recovery speed for defending transitions.

Livramento adds far more defensive actions per 90 minutes than Trippier, whilst not losing too much attacking threat, as whilst the elder defender offers precise passing, the former Southampton man offers a bombing overlap option to help support Harvey Barnes on the right wing.

As Livramento begins to take over the right-back spot, phasing out Trippier, it may be time for Newcastle to move their high earner on, saving money, and allowing the younger option the keys to that position on a full-time basis.

'More harm will be done' if Yorkshire don't publish racism report, says British MP

Political figures weigh in on Azeem Rafiq’s complaint against former club

George Dobell27-Aug-2021Yorkshire’s reluctance to publish the report into allegations of institutional racism at the club have been branded “unacceptable” by a leading British member of parliament, Kevin Brennan, who has warned Yorkshire that “by suppressing this report’s findings” there is a danger that “more harm will be done to the game of cricket”.”The failure of Yorkshire Cricket club to make public the independent report into racism following complaints from former player Azeem Rafiq is unacceptable,” Brennan, the MP from Cardiff West and previously a minister in the Labour government, said in a statement sent to ESPNcricinfo. “Only through openness and transparency will racism in sport be eradicated and more harm will be done to the game of cricket and the club by suppressing this report’s findings than by making them public, and following through on the recommendations.”Related

While Brennan was explicitly talking in his capacity as a politician, it may prove relevant that he is also a member of the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee (DCMS) in the House of Commons. The committee is charged with scrutinising the administration of various public bodies and can call upon individuals and organisations to explain their actions. They can also, in extreme cases, call for enquiries.Brennan’s intervention follows that of Hilary Benn, the MP for Leeds Central, who retweeted ESPNcricinfo’s piece on the issue with the comment “I trust Yorkshire CCC will now publish this report without delay in the interests of full transparency.”The increased interest of political figures in the matter offers an intriguing possibility of the future direction of this episode. UK laws permit parliamentary privilege to MPs, meaning that comments made within the chamber are immune from libel prosecution. As a result, it is possible that those mentioned in the report could be named in parliament if Yorkshire continue to delay publication of the report.Yorkshire CCC claim that the legal advice they have received informs them that sharing the report – which contains accusations against a number of individuals as well as organisations – could open them up to libel action. But while their reluctance to publish the report without any redaction may be understandable, their reluctance to share the report with either the PCA (the players’ union) or the ECB has underwhelmed many of those in the administration of English cricket. The ECB, as the official regulators of the game, are especially keen they should be allowed to see it.

EXPERIÊNCIA NO EXTERIOR

Rangers already have "dream" Lawrence replacement in forgotten star

Glasgow Rangers look set for a big summer of change during the transfer window as there have already been a number of alterations to the playing squad.

Head of recruitment Nils Koppen has been hard at work to make key additions to Philippe Clement's group at Ibrox and has already landed a number of deals.

Connor Barron, Jefte, Oscar Cortes, Clinton Nsiala, and Liam Kelly have all been brought in to bolster the manager's options across the park, with Hamza Igamane and Yusuf Kabadayi also linked with moves to the club.

The Light Blues have already allowed a number of first-team players to move on from Glasgow, such as Jon McLaughlin, Borna Barisic, Kemar Roofe, John Lundstram, and Ryan Jack as they all departed upon the expiry of their contracts at the end of May.

John Lundstram

Further senior professionals could be on their way out as Birmingham have been linked with an interest in Connor Goldson and Sheffield Wednesday are reportedly keen on Scott Wright.

Another player who could be ditched by the Scottish giants before the summer transfer window slams shut is attacking midfielder Tom Lawrence.

European interest in Rangers attacker

It was recently reported by Turkish outlet Kartal Haber, via the Daily Record, that Besiktas are preparing an offer to sign the Wales international to bolster their squad.

They are currently managed by former Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who signed Lawrence for the Light Blues, and he wants to reunite with the experienced playmaker ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

However, the outlet did not reveal how much the Super Lig side are willing to offer the Scottish Premiership side to sign the former Derby County wizard.

Tom Lawrence

Last month, Football Insider reported that Rangers will demand a fee of around £5m to sell the player they signed from the Rams on a free transfer in the summer of 2022.

It now remains to be seen whether or not Besiktas, or any other potentially interested side, are willing or able to splash out a fee of £5m for the 30-year-old midfielder.

If the Gers are able to cash in on him, for £5m or a lower figure, then they may not even have to go into the market to replace him as Clement may already have a dream replacement in the building in the form of Ianis Hagi.

The Romania international is set to return to the club after the 2024 European Championship following his loan spell at Alaves during the 2023/24 campaign.

Why Rangers should cash in on Tom Lawrence

If a multi-million-pound offer lands on their desk this summer, Rangers should cash in on Lawrence as they may not have another chance to do so.

His current contract expires next summer and that means that he would be allowed to negotiate a pre-contract deal with foreign teams from January onwards, preventing the Gers from being able to sell him in January.

Tom Lawrence

He also turns 31 in January and is heading into the latter stages of his career, which makes it seem unlikely that his performances will improve enough to make his value rise higher than it is now.

The 30-year-old gem's unavailability may also be taken into consideration as he was absent from the matchday squad on 26 occasions during the 2023/24 campaign, and missed 49 games for club and country the previous term.

All of these factors put together suggest that now could be the perfect time for Clement and Koppen to move him on and consider other options to take on his role.

As you can see in the table above, Lawrence's performances on the pitch could also come into play as he was not an integral member of the squad last term.

He only contributed directly to five goals in 23 appearances as an attacking midfielder in the Scottish Premiership, which does not suggest that they would need much to replace his impact in the final third.

Why Ianis Hagi could replace him

Clement could bring Hagi back into the first-team squad after his spell out on loan, having been sent away by Michael Beale, and use the forgotten wizard as his replacement for Lawrence.

The Romanian playmaker, who ex-boss Steven Gerrard dubbed an "absolute dream" to work with, was sent out on loan to Alaves to continue his recovery from a nasty knee injury.

After suffering the blow in January 2022, the 25-year-old ace missed a staggering 69 games for Rangers across 371 days on the sidelines, which meant that it has taken him time to rediscover his form.

Despite that long-term absence, injuries are not a big concern for him moving forward as he only missed three matchday squads for club and country during the entire 2023/24 campaign.

Hagi only produced two goals and two assists in all competitions for Alaves but Clement could look to unlock the Hagi of old, who previously proved his quality in the Premiership.

As you can see in the table above, the impressive whiz racked up 20 direct goal contributions in 38 league starts for Rangers in the 18 months before his knee injury.

Hagi, who has one assist in three Euros games this summer, is a creative midfielder who can also chip in with goals when he is at his best, and offers dynamism with his ability to pass and shoot with either foot.

He can play in the number ten role, as a direct replacement for Lawrence, but his ability to play on either flank means that the Romanian maestro can also be utilised in other roles by Clement.

He's wanted: Rangers must sell £5.6k-p/w man who scored fewer than Silva

The Light Blues must cash in on the underperforming winger this summer.

ByDan Emery Jul 1, 2024

Therefore, the 25-year-old, who still has plenty of years left to get back to his best and develop further, must be given another chance by the Light Blues and brought in to replace the Welshman, after being forgotten about for the past season.

That could then save the club millions, instead of splashing the cash on another midfielder, and free up funds to be used in other areas of the squad.

Report: Sunderland want to seal summer reunion with 25 y/o defender

Sunderland are reportedly interested in sealing a reunion with one of their former players, with the 25-year-old becoming one of the best in his new league.

Sunderland transfer news

It's all change at the Stadium of Light this summer, with Regis Le Bris coming in as the Black Cats' new permanent manager, hoping to mount a Championship playoff push next season.

The Frenchman will know that new signings will be needed in order for that to happen, and Scott Twine has been linked with a move to Sunderland. The Burnley midfielder is seen as a perfect potential replacement for Jobe Bellingham, should the talented youngster move on to pastures new.

The 24-year-old had loan spells at both Hull City and Bristol City in 2023/24, having been deemed surplus to requirements by the Clarets, and he may now be keen to seal a permanent move away from Turf Moor.

Sunderland are also believed to be battling with Watford for the signing of Valencia attacker Declan Frith, who is featuring more for their reserve team currently, and may wish to return to England in search of senior minutes. Meanwhile, Ajax's Ar'jany Martha has emerged as a possible addition, too, being compared to former Black Cats ace Patrick van Aanholt.

Sunderland want reunion with 25-year-old

According to HITC, Sunderland want to bring defender Kenton Richardson back to the club this summer, re-signing him from Gateshead after selling him back in 2022. Derby County and Oxford United are also in the picture, though.

"It is understood that Sunderland are one of the clubs showing an interest in Richardson, but they are not alone. Newly promoted Championship duo Derby and Oxford are also keeping tabs on the situation, along with Peterborough and Barnsley in League One and Notts County in League Two."

The fact that Richardson is only plying his trade in the National League means that Sunderland supporters may not be too excited about the prospect of a reunion happening in the summer transfer window.

That being said, he has been a standout performer in England's fifth tier, as the report states, starting 38 matches in the league and helping Gateshead finish in sixth, only to be thrown out of the playoffs for financial reasons. He also helped his side win the FA Trophy at Wembley, but now looks likely to leave this summer, with his current deal expiring at the end of June.

At 25, the Durham-born Richardson is still a relatively young footballer who has found another level since leaving Sunderland first time around, and if Le Bris sees him as someone who can add depth to his back-line, the new Black Cats boss needs to be trusted.

It's easy for fans to turn their noses up at signing players from the lower leagues, but there is enough evidence throughout history to suggest that it can be a masterstroke at times, not least Jamie Vardy. Richardson has one cap to his name for England's C team, and the fact that he knows Sunderland well already could allow him to slot back into his surroundings with ease.

The north Londoners have also shipped plenty of deadwood, with Eric Dier, Ivan Perisic, Ryan Sessegnon and Japhet Tanganga leaving upon the expiry of their Tottenham contracts. Joe Rodon joined Leeds in a £10 million permanent deal as well, helping to sweeten the deal for Gray, with Tottenham also agreeing to terminate Tanguy Ndombele's contract as the former club-record signing joins OGC Nice on a free transfer.

Tottenham are expected to make another attacking signing after Werner too, as the likes of Wolves winger Pedro Neto, Palace star Eberechi Eze and others become linked with N17 moves.

Club chairman Daniel Levy is ready to back Postecoglou in the coming weeks, according to various reports, and it is believed Spurs are even willing to pay the entirety of Eze's £60 million release clause in their pursuit of a new forward.

"We need change. Change has to happen," said Postecoglou on Spurs' summer transfer business.

"You can’t want to alter your course and expect the same people are going to be on that. It’s just not going to happen. We’ve had two windows and we’ve had some development of players, for sure, but when I say we’ve still got a long way to go, that’s what I’m talking about. It’s impossible to say you’re going to have drastic change and yet expect everyone to be on that journey.

"It’s not for the want of trying. It’s just that we’re going to play a certain way, we’re going to train a certain way and we’re going to have a certain mindset. And that’s not for everyone."

Another interesting player they've been linked with is former academy gem Marcus Edwards, and they could get him on the cheap. Portuguese newspaper Corriere de Manha recently claimed that Sporting value the winger at around £17 million, but Spurs' 35 per cent sell-on clause means that figure would come down to just £11 million if Postecoglou's side bid.

Tottenham consider hijacking Palace bid for Edwards

Football Insider have another update on the matter, and they claim Palace are readying their own bid for the 25-year-old.

However, Levy is still in the background, with FI writing that Tottenham could rival Palace in the race to sign Edwards and hijack Oliver Glasner's side – similarly to how they prised Gray from Brentford's clutches earlier this summer. Spurs have also made an approach by asking to be kept informed about the situation.

The Englishman racked up 15 goal contributions, six goals and nine assists specifically, in 44 appearances across all competitions last season. Edwards has been praised for his form at Sporting in flashes, and it is believed he is open to a Premier League return.
