Finch on retirement: It’ll be sad but it’s time to move on

Aaron Finch believes he might get more emotional in his BBL and Melbourne Renegades farewell than he did when he retired from international cricket for Australia, as he prepares to play his last professional match in the Melbourne derby on Saturday night.Finch has announced his retirement from professional cricket despite having a year to run on his Renegades contract. He has only played four games for Renegades this season and none since he injured his back on December 23.He has been available to play after recovering from that injury but has not been selected. However, with Renegades out of the finals picture, he has been granted a farewell game against Melbourne Stars at Marvel Stadium on Saturday with a crowd of more than 30,000 expected to turn out to say goodbye to one of the iconic figures of the BBL.Finch will retire the competition’s second leading run-scorer behind Chris Lynn and Renegades’ games record-holder having played in each of the 13 seasons of the BBL for the one club. He also captained the side to their lone BBL title in 2018-19. He is also the seventh-highest run-scorer in all T20 cricket.Finch revealed he was not overly emotional in his last game of ODI cricket in 2022. He did not have a T20I farewell as he announced his retirement months after his final game, but he said his BBL farewell will feel different.”I haven’t got emotional around any of my retirements, which is quite strange,” Finch said on Friday. “But maybe tomorrow I will. This has been a huge part of mine and my family’s life for the last 13 years and have put as much time and effort into it as I can and, yeah, it’ll be sad, no doubt.”But it’s time to move on and the next generation of players coming through are seriously good. So it’s in good hands.”Finch said it had been difficult not being selected for most of the season despite being fit and available for the majority of it. He admitted that the transition from international cricket to franchise cricket only had been a challenge.”When you’re no longer captain, I guess that’s taken out of your hands a bit as well because you’re not in selection,” he said. “It’s been difficult no doubt. It’s been something that I’ve been lucky with throughout my career actually that it hasn’t happened a huge amount of times. But to finish up here at Marvel will be really special as well.”From a playing point of view, once you go from hitting balls day in day out, hundreds of balls, 1000s of balls a week to then it, not becomes your second priority, but you just don’t have the time or the resources to hit as many balls as you would want.”Then it takes a bit more catching up to do so. That’s probably been the most difficult part to keep playing in franchises, but to not be in a system where you have access to a lot of resources.”Finch cited the 2018-19 title as his greatest achievement in the BBL but he added that he had loved playing home games at Marvel Stadium under the roof, despite it not being the most popular venue amongst players within the BBL.”The title win was unbelievable,” Finch said. “Especially against the Stars in a game where they well and truly had one hand, almost two hands on the trophy, and to drag it back and win that game was really special.”I think just overall just getting to play here. It’s such an unusual venue for cricket and we’re the only team that does play cricket here. There’s no other games, no international games or anything that happens so it’s really cool.”Finch’s Renegades and Australia team-mate Adam Zampa said players should be grateful for Finch’s contribution to the competition.Aaron Finch picked out the 2018-19 BBL title as a career highlight•Getty Images

“He’s one of those inaugural players from the first year that kind of the competition was built around,” Zampa said. “I don’t think the BBL would have the position it does without players like Finchy. He’s been a mainstay of the Renegades for 13 years now and his contribution, we’ll always be grateful for players like him in particular. It’s exciting to kind of have this opportunity to say goodbye to him.”Stars allrounder Marcus Stoinis was also full of praise for Finch’s contribution to his own career having played almost all of his limited-overs cricket for Australia under Finch’s leadership, including the 2021 T20 World Cup triumph in the UAE.”He’s been great for the BBL, been great for the Renegades, Victorian cricket and Australian cricket,” Stoinis said. “For us, we’ve got a different lens in that he helped nurture us through our early stages of playing for Australia. He captained us pretty much the whole time. He was the one that, in those first games where we weren’t feeling comfortable within ourselves, he threw us the ball, kept us going, educated us.”As much as he’s in the opposition I’m glad that it’s working out that I get to play in the game that is his farewell because he deserves a farewell. I do hope we win. But he deserves to have a great night.”Finch is likely to step into the commentary box full-time after Saturday night’s farewell but he is excited about the future of the BBL after its resurgence this season.”I think the fact that it’s back to 10 games now is a really good thing,” Finch said. “That just puts an emphasis on every single game and with more Test players playing [next year], the amount of Australian cricketers playing, that are the best in the world, is better for the competition and I think in turn that will then attract more internationals, better internationals, because the whole standard of the competition goes up.”So that’s something to be really excited about. Over the last 13 years, the young players come in and have a bigger impact straightaway than probably what they used to.”It’s going to go from strength to strength again. I think it’s a really exciting time for BBL.”

Ferguson upgrade: 49ers can hire "one of the best coaches ever" at Rangers

With at least ten games to go this season, potentially more, there’s still plenty for Rangers to play for.

Prior to the international break, supporters certainly had a good week, didn’t they?

First, the Gers dumped out Fenerbahçe on penalties in the Europa League round of 16, before goals from Nicolas Raskin, Mohamed Diomandé and then Hamza Igamane, the latter coming right at the death, saw them beat fierce rivals Celtic 3-2 in an Old Firm derby at Parkhead.

Despite this victory, the 13-point gap at the top of the Premiership means Rangers are not going to reclaim the title, but they still have European aspirations, and their interim manager will be looking to stake a claim to land the job more permanently.

How Barry Ferguson could become Rangers' permanent manager

Last month, following a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of St Mirren, Philippe Clement was sacked as Rangers manager after 86 matches in charge.

Glasgow Rangers managerPhilippe Clement.

The following day, club-legend Barry Ferguson, who made 412 appearances for Rangers as a player, was appointed interim head coach until the end of the season, assisted by fellow ex-players Neil McCann, Billy Dodds and Allan McGregor.

As noted by Graham Ruthven of Total Soccer Show, many questioned this appointment, considering Ferguson’s, at best, mixed managerial career so far, having previously been in charge of Blackpool, Clyde, Kelty Hearts and Alloa Athletic, winning only nine of 33 matches during an ill-fated spell with the Wasps.

Nevertheless, so far, the rookie manager has exceeded all expectations, notably becoming the first Rangers boss to win their first Glasgow derby at Celtic Park since the legendary Walter Smith back in 1991.

He has also guided them through to the Europa League quarter-finals, thanks largely to a famous 3-1 victory in İstanbul, now set to take on Athletic Club Bilbao for a place in the semis next month.

These victories have led to speculation that Ferguson could land the job permanently, with Paul Gascoigne believing this should be the case, stating “he is Rangers through and through… he’s got the potential to be a great manager”.

However, with Paraag Marathe, President of 49ers Enterprises, poised to complete a takeover of Rangers before the summer, Harry Brent of the Daily Record reports the new owners ‘are expected to look elsewhere’, so could their dream candidate currently be shinning in France?

Rangers' dream new manager

Recent claims have suggested that Liam Rosenior could be one of the leading candidates in the frame to be the next Rangers manager.

The 40-year-old Englishman was appointed as manager of Ligue 1 side Strasbourg last summer, a decision that ‘divided the fanbase’, but he is now earning rave reviews for his performance in France’s Alsace region.

Les Bleu et Blanc, who are owned by Chelsea majority shareholder Todd Boehly, are currently seventh in Ligue 1, thereby on course for European qualification, having only featured in UEFA competition once since 2005/06.

Jack Roberts of Breaking the Lines praises Rosenior’s ‘exceptional ability to work with young players’, while he said himself he wants to “dominate possession, press the ball and be intense in the way we play”.

Meantime, when he was appointed by previous club Hull City, former Crystal Palace and Republic of Ireland striker Clinton Morrison, speaking on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday, described Rosenior as “a top manager”, adding he could well be “one of the best coaches ever”.

Rangers supporter Findlay Marks of the Scottish Football Show expects the new owners will want to make a ‘statement appointment’, doubtful Ferguson fits that brief, but does Rosenior?

Let’s examine his managerial career so far.

As the table underlines, Rosenior may not yet be the big-name appointment the 49ers are looking for but, as noted by Senior Editor Aidan McCartney, he is ‘one of the best young managers’ in Europe right now.

Thus, this would certainly be a shrewd hire, representing a clear upgrade on Ferguson.

Worth more than James: Chelsea have struck gold on "unbelievable" talent

Chelsea have conducted excellent business in the transfer market over the last couple of years, handing Enzo Maresca the platform to be a success.

The Italian has a superb squad at his disposal, having depth in key areas, helping them sit in fourth place in the Premier League – aiming to secure a Champions League place come the end of the campaign.

However, mixing that with the superb academy facilities in West London makes for a great combination, with numerous players making the jump into the senior ranks over the years.

Levi Colwill has cemented his place in Maresca’s backline over the last few months, starting all but two of the league outings since his appointment in the summer.

He’s often been partnered by another player who emerged through the ranks at Cobham, making a name for himself with his excellent performances since his debut.

Reece James’ stats for Chelsea in 2024/25

Full-back Reece James has been a player who has had his injury struggles in recent years, restricting his progress for Chelsea and holding him back from his full potential.

The 25-year-old has made just 11 Premier League appearances in 2024/25, but has still managed to impress, leading to an England call-up for the current international break.

He’s managed to complete 90% of the passes he’s attempted, whilst also creating 0.9 chances per game – having a huge impact in attacking areas despite his defensive role.

James has also managed to catch the eye defensively, winning 5.4 duels per 90 to date, along with 1.1 interceptions – helping the side keep six clean sheets in the league this season.

However, despite his impressive showings after his latest setbacks, he’s now valued lower than one player who’s often filled the void in his absence in recent times.

The Chelsea player who’s worth more than James

His injury issues have allowed numerous players to stake their claim at right-back under Maresca – numerous of whom have featured out of position.

Trevoh Chalobah and Wesley Fofana are just two players who have operated in the aforementioned department but have struggled to match the performance levels of one other first-team member.

Malo Gusto has developed well since his £26m move to join the Blues back in January 2023, providing the goods at right-back within Maresca’s side.

The Frenchman has already featured 66 times for the Blues, with 29 of which coming in the current campaign, the majority of which have been in the Premier League.

He’s impressed in numerous key areas, outperforming James in various departments and showcasing the rise he’s endured since his big-money transfer.

Gusto, who’s previously been dubbed “unbelievable” by journalist Nizaar Kinsella has managed to complete more progressive carries and achieve a higher pass accuracy, highlighting the threat he carries in attack.

However, he’s also managed to win more tackles per 90, whilst also making more blocks, having that defensive solidity to help Maresca in his quest for Champions League football.

As a result of his showings, the 21-year-old has seen his market value to £30m as per Transfermarkt, a fee higher than that of James, who’s only valued at £25m after his injury issues.

Such a deal is evident that the club have recruited well in the transfer market, making the right call in investing in young talents and handing them the platform to improve.

With Gusto and James both on the books, it’s safe to say that the department should be sorted for years to come, with the pair having the opportunity to write themselves in Blues history.

AC Milan make £33m bid for Chelsea star; confident deal will be done

AC Milan have now submitted a £33m offer for a “fantastic” Chelsea player, having identified him as a major target, and they are confident that a deal will be done, according to a new report.

Chelsea's summer transfer plans

The Blues have developed a reputation for stockpiling talented young players, and they are showing no signs of slowing down, having completed an out-of-window double swoop for Sporting CP’s Dario Essugo and Geovany Quenda.

It seems like the west Londoners have no plans to stop there, either, having already made an enquiry over a move for Juventus winger Kenan Yildiz, while they are also looking at AFC Bournemouth centre-back Dean Huijsen.

As such, in order to fund their own transfer business, Enzo Maresca’s side may be forced to cash-in on some players during the summer window, and the manager is willing to sanction the permanent departure of Aston Villa loanee Axel Disasi.

Maresca is also ready to let Arsenal loanee Raheem Sterling leave on a permanent basis, with Juventus eyeing the 30-year-old, and he is not the only winger being targeted by one of Italy’s biggest clubs.

According to a report from Spain, AC Milan have now made a €40m (£33m) bid for Noni Madueke, having identified the 23-year-old as one of their main targets for the summer transfer window.

Chelsea's NoniMaduekein action with Brighton & Hove Albion's Tariq Lamptey

Milan are eyeing replacements for Rafael Leao, who has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, and they believe Madueke could be the perfect candidate.

The Italian giants are confident that a deal will be done for a fee of around £33m, and the huge competition for places at Stamford Bridge could make the move more likely.

"Fantastic" Madueke enjoying impressive campaign

It would be a shame to see the former PSV Eindhoven man leave this summer, given that the current campaign has been his best to date in a Chelsea shirt, picking up seven goals and three assists in the Premier League.

Maresca has also been impressed by the attacker’s contributions going forward, despite admitting there are still plenty of things he could improve.

The Blues are blessed with a lot of attacking options, but the forward was among their most consistent players prior to his recent hamstring injury, and he has admitted striking up a good relationship with Cole Palmer.

“He is cold and I am fire, so it mixes well. He has always got the ability to play the right pass at the right time, so it’s brilliant.”

As such, Chelsea should knock back the alleged bid from AC Milan, given that it doesn’t reflect Madueke’s value to the team.

Forget Osula: Newcastle's 19-year-old starlet can spell the end for Wilson

Newcastle United’s campaign hangs in the balance.

Injuries have soured the mood in the build-up to next week’s Carabao Cup final. Lewis Hall looks to be out for the campaign, while Sven Botman has returned to the medical room once again, joining fellow centre-back Jamal Lascelles, who hasn’t featured at all this season. Anthony Gordon is also suspended after being shown a red card in the FA Cup defeat against Brighton.

However, it’s not all doom and gloom. Eddie Howe’s side have made their second final in three years and stand a great chance of lifting the trophy, with Liverpool sure to be fatigued after a potentially gruelling second-leg Champions League tie with Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday evening.

Newcastle United managerEddieHowe

Alexander Isak’s recent fitness worries present a concern, but fears have been allayed after the free-scoring sensation was withdrawn against the Seagulls.

He should be ready to take on the Reds. And let’s hope so too, with Callum Wilson flattering to deceive as he ostensibly approaches the final stretch of his Magpies journey.

Callum Wilson's future at Newcastle

Wilson has been a fantastic servant for Newcastle, joining from Howe’s Bournemouth for £20m in 2020 and scoring 49 goals across just 118 appearances, adding 11 assists.

Once among the most prolific finishers in Europe, Wilson is nearing the end of his Newcastle contract and it looks like Howe might be gearing up to part ways, with his impact negligible this season.

33 years old, it makes sense for the parties to separate.

The Athletic’s Chris Waugh confirmed in February that Newcastle have the option to extend Wilson’s deal by an extra year, but given his injury issues and loss of potency in front of goal, this may not be the wisest decision.

There remains hope 21-year-old William Osula, signed from Sheffield United for £15m last summer, will come good after a slow start, but Howe may actually find a homegrown forward who could be the perfect Wilson replacement.

The Newcastle teen who could replace Wilson

Newcastle need to strengthen this summer, putting Howe’s squad in an even better position, ready to attack multiple fronts – one of which will hopefully be among Europe’s elite.

In The Pipeline

Osula, who has made ten substitute appearances in the Premier League this season and startlingly hasn’t even taken a single shot, averaging 2.4 touches per game, as per Sofascore, has now proven himself worthy to be Isak’s understudy.

However, Ben Parkinson might have the minerals to do a job.

Newcastle youngster Ben Parkinson

Parkinson, 19, has already featured once for Newcastle’s first team and has provided a consistent striking outlet for the youth side, posting 27 goals and seven assists from 73 matches across U18 and U21 levels. He’s said it himself: “I love scoring goals.”

He’s positionally fluid and ambipedal, though has enjoyed his most potent success this term as the U21s centre-forward, firing home eight goals from 13 matches, providing one assist too.

Though he’s been absent since January with an injury, Parkinson is slated for an imminent return and will be looking to make an appearance or two among the seniors before the campaign reaches its conclusion.

Correspondent Jordan Cronin hailed the teenager as one of the “standouts” during an U21 victory back in December, alongside Botman as the Dutchman hit the final strides of his rehabilitation.

All the pointers suggest he may be a real star down the line, and with such a promising strike record, Howe might just find a prolific new version of Wilson to galvanise the Toon fanbase.

"Decisive" Aston Villa ace an early doubt to face Cardiff after injury blow

Adding to their misery following a 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Crystal Palace, an Aston Villa star is already an early injury doubt to face Cardiff City in the FA Cup this weekend.

Aston Villa injury news

The Villans finally made a strong statement in their comeback victory over Chelsea last weekend, which followed an impressive 2-2 draw against Liverpool. And as a trip to Selhurst Park awaited, it looked like an easy bet that Unai Emery’s side would add to their impressive form. But that turned out to be far from the case.

Once again, the Midlands club took one step forward only to take two steps back in the space of one week and one damaging defeat against Crystal Palace.

Now four points adrift of the Champions League places, Aston Villa must park their European ambitions and turn their attention towards Cardiff City and the last 16 of the FA Cup, where they’ll be hoping to avoid yet another unexpected result. To do that, however, they may have to secure victory without one key man.

As confirmed by Emery, Emiliano Martinez is now an early injury doubt to face Cardiff after coming off at half-time against Crystal Palace through an ill-timed blow.

Emery told reporters: “He was feeling yesterday a little bit of pain. He trained and today he felt good in the warm-up. In the first half he told us he was feeling some pain so we decided to change him. I don’t exactly (the injury). We have to test him.”

Likely left to turn towards Robin Olsen again this weekend, Aston Villa will hope that Martinez’s injury does not result in a lengthy absence with just 10 Premier League games remaining to secure Champions League qualification.

Aston Villa would miss "decisive" Martinez

A World Cup winner and the man who has been crowned Europe’s best goalkeeper for two consecutive seasons, there’s no doubt that Aston Villa would feel the full effect of Martinez’s absence should he miss a number of games.

The Argentina hero hasn’t always been at his very best at Villa Park this season, but remains the undisputed number one and arguably one of the best shot-stoppers in the Premier League.

Emery has always been well aware of Martinez’s talent too, praising his goalkeeper in last season’s penalty shoot-out victory against Lille in the Europa Conference League last eight.

The Spaniard told reporters: “He is being successful individually and with both Argentina and Villa. Having been successful with Argentina, he is progressively getting better with Villa. He is decisive in a lot of matches and of course, he is one of the best goalkeepers. The first, second, third? For me he is the best.”

With the chance to bounce back from defeat against Cardiff, Villa won’t have time to worry about Martinez’s injury. Instead, they must put on an emphatic and convincing display against Championship opposition in the FA Cup.
