Rana and Russell hand Daredevils a drubbing

Is Andre Russell the most valuable T20 player in the world? He has the stats (and the Smart Stats) to back such a claim, and on Monday he added to his vast body of work with a brief and brutal assault that transformed the mood of what had until then been an edgy battle for first-innings points.Russell came in with Kolkata Knight Riders 113 for 4 in the 14th over. He departed 22 balls later, having added 61 to his team’s total in the company of the impressive Nitish Rana. He only faced 12 balls, but he hit six of them for six.Knight Riders finished with exactly 200. This was a difficult target against Knight Riders’ spin attack, on a pitch offering a good amount of turn. Delhi Daredevils needed a strong start; they ended up slipping to 24 for 3. It was all uphill from there, and Daredevils didn’t have the legs for the climb, with none of their batsmen getting into double figures apart from Rishabh Pant and Glenn Maxwell, who threatened briefly to make this a contest with a 62-run stand for the fourth wicket in 33 balls.Daredevils were bowled out for 129, with 5.4 overs still to play.Uthappa and Rana make up for misfiring Narine and LynnChris Lynn likes pace, but doesn’t score as quickly against spin. Sunil Narine likes spin, but isn’t too fond of fast, short bowling (16 off 20 balls against this type of bowling last season, and four dismissals). It’s a hard opening pair to plan against, and Daredevils, having chosen to bowl, went all pace at the start. It worked: Trent Boult started the game with the first maiden of the season, to an off-colour Lynn who struggled for timing, and then sent back Narine with a well-directed bouncer. After that early dose of pace, it was all spin from overs 6-10, presumably in an effort to keep Lynn quiet. Daredevils managed that, as Lynn ended the 10th over batting on 28 off 25, but the batsmen at the other end compensated, with Robin Uthappa and Nitish Rana hitting five sixes between them in that phase. Knight Riders ended the first half of their innings at 85 for 2.Russell ruins Shami’s nightIt remained like that for a while: runs coming quickly at one end but not quite at the other. Mohammed Shami, varying his pace constantly, went for only 11 in his first two overs, the 11th and 13th of Knight Riders’ innings, and sent back Lynn with a well-disguised knuckleball. Vijay Shankar and Chris Morris, meanwhile. went for 12 and 15 against Rana and Dinesh Karthik in the 12th and 14th overs.Neither team could really say it was significantly in front at the start of the 15th over, which began with Russell batting on 0 off 0. Twenty-two came off that over, with Russell ramping, lofting and muscling Shami for three massive sixes. In between, he miscued one, only for Jason Roy to drop him, diving forward after running in from long-on.Rana was the dominant partner in the next over, pulling Morris for six and then holding his shape to carve a slower one over point for four, before Russell versus Shami resumed. Three more sixes came off this over, off three very different deliveries – a wide, full slower ball; a length ball; a bouncer – and 20 runs in all.It took a perfectly directed yorker from Boult to send back Russell in the 18th over. Then Rana played a couple of outrageous shots himself – a middle-stump yorker from Boult squeezed past short third man, a scything square-drive off Morris that made deep point redundant – before falling for 59 off 34 in the penultimate over. With Knight Riders’ batting might almost extinguished, Rahul Tewatia took three wickets and only conceded one run off the last over, but the damage had been done.Early wickets seal the dealRoy came into this match fresh off a match-winning, unbeaten 91 in a chase of not dissimilar magnitude against Mumbai Indians. There would be no repeat here. Piyush Chawla bowled the first over, no doubt because of Roy’s dodgy T20 record against legspin, and had him stumped down the leg side when he spotted him charging out of his crease too early. That was Roy’s 12th dismissal to legspin in 27 innings – in that time he has scored 190 runs against them at a strike rate of roughly 126.Russell’s pace and bounce did for Shreyas Iyer, who fended a rising delivery to slip, and when Gautam Gambhir chopped on against Shivam Mavi, Daredevils had lost a wicket in each of their first three overs. With no option but to keep playing their shots, Pant and Maxwell kept the game alive for a little longer, but with such a large chunk of Daredevils’ resources already depleted, it was a matter of time before Knight Riders would reassert their dominance. Both fell to Kuldeep Yadav; Pant smashed him straight to deep midwicket in the ninth over, and Maxwell, having just struck successive sixes off him in the 11th, holed out attempting a third in a row. Morris and Shankar, the last two recognised batsmen, fell in the space of three stump-to-stump balls from Sunil Narine, enabling him to pick up his 100th and 101st IPL wickets.

Double trouble: one hour, two hat-tricks

Cricket is a funny game, they say, and some of that funniness was on show at the Plunket Shield, New Zealand’s first-class competition. Here’s what happened: two bowlers took a hat-trick almost at the same time, each in his own little corner of New Zealand. If that weren’t coincidental enough, these two players – Wellington’s Logan van Beek and Auckland’s Matt McEwan – both claimed their hat-tricks across two overs, they both previously played for Canterbury, and, erm, they both went to the same school (Christchurch’s St Andrew’s College).According to a New Zealand Cricket (NZC) release, this was the first time in the Plunket Shield’s 112-year history that two hat-tricks were taken on the same day of the competition. Van Beek was the first to complete his set (the 40th Plunket Shield hat-trick), in the fourth and sixth overs as his old team Canterbury capitulated in their second innings down south in Christchurch.Getty Images

Within the hour, McEwan’s strikes followed (the 41st Plunket Shield hat-trick), carving up Northern Districts’ middle order in the 26th and 28th overs of their first innings up north in Auckland. (A video of the two hat-tricks, courtesy NZC, is here.)And all this in the first round of Plunket Shield games after a two-month break to fit in the limited-overs competitions. First-class cricket, back with a bang?

Man United Want ‘Unique’ £55m Amrabat Alternative

Manchester United are still in the market to sign another midfielder despite their Premier League campaign kicking off tomorrow, and now a fresh update has emerged on a potential target.

What's the latest Man United transfer news?

According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United are plotting a move for Everton midfielder Amadou Onana.

As per the report, the Red Devils are assessing an approach for Onana as an alternative for top target Sofyan Amrabat, due to Juventus preparing to challenge the club for the signing of the Moroccan midfielder.

Read the latest Man United transfer news HERE…

It is noted that a move for Onana will depend on Everton's valuation of the player.

How good is Amadou Onana?

There is no doubt that Erik ten Hag will be keen to get business wrapped up as soon as possible, with Man United playing their Premier League opener against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday.

It is no secret that the Dutch coach has his sights set on snapping up the services of Amrabat, however, should that not be an option it will be important to identify alternatives who possess the profile, experience and quality to match what Ten Hag needs in the role.

As a result, the signing of Onana would be a great piece of business as he not only boasts Premier League and Champions League experience but would be a worthy alternative to the Fiorentina ace.

Despite being in a difficult relegation scrap last season, Onana was a stand-out performer at Goodison Park offering consistency and quality in the centre of the pitch throughout the campaign, something he displayed again in Everton's opening clash with Fulham on Saturday.

amadou-onana-premier-league-man-united-transfers

Over his 90-minute performance, the 21-year-old was the highest-rated outfield player on the pitch (7.7), as per SofaScore – delivering three key passes and creating two big chances, as well as tallying up an 87% pass completion rate, winning three duels and completing 100% of his long balls during a display that encompassed the all-round package he provides.

Not only that, Onana – who has a reported £55m price tag – ranked in the top 6% of his positional peers in the Premier League last season per 90 minutes played for tackles in the middle third, percentage of dribblers tackled, passes blocked and aerial duels won, demonstrating his strengths in the defensive attributes needed in his role.

The Belgium international has earned high praise over his short career so far, with ex-Belgium coach Roberto Martinez waxing lyrical about Onana's qualities after selecting him for the 2022 World Cup squad:

"Another unique profile. Someone with such physical presence and dynamism is needed, just think of Fellaini in 2018. He is also a leader on the field who has made strides in his career. From Germany, to France and now the Premier League… He deserves this selection."

With that being said, if Man United could seal a deal for Onana this summer there is no doubt he possesses the perfect profile to fit the role that Ten Hag is keen to fill, and in doing so, could take his career to the next level by being a key influence in the midfield at Old Trafford for years to come.

Man City Keen On "Phenomenal" £300k-p/w Player

Manchester City are reportedly looking at a move for Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich and could make an offer for the player in the coming days.

What’s the latest Man City transfer news?

The Sky Blues and Pep Guardiola have already added to their treble-winning squad this summer by bringing in Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea in a deal worth a total of £30m.

However, Ilkay Gundogan, who played a key role in City’s success last season with two goals in the FA Cup final, has decided to join Barcelona on a free transfer after his contract expired at the Etihad.

Therefore, it looks as if Kovacic will fill the void left by Gundogan ahead of the 2023/24 season, but more new faces could arrive before the window shuts on September 1.

Fellow Croatia international, Josko Gvardiol, has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano even claiming on Wednesday that the RB Leipzig man had even completed the first part of a City medical.

However, speculation has since cooled on the defender, but it looks as if another Bundesliga star is of interest in Kimmich.

The Faithful MUFC relayed news from Spain regarding Kimmich in the last 48 hours, where City were mentioned. It is believed that City, along with rivals Manchester United and Liverpool, all want to sign the Germany international this summer, with Kimmich keen on leaving the Allianz Arena.

All three English clubs are expected to make offers by sending proposals in the coming days, with the report saying on City:

“Manchester City have shown a clear interest in Kimmich after losing the opportunity to sign Declan Rice, who eventually joined Arsenal. The need to strengthen their midfield has led the 'Citizens' to set their sights on the versatile German player, who excels both defensively and offensively.”

joshua-kimmich-transfer-gossip-arsenal-bayern-munich-edu-arteta-granit-xhaka

Who is Joshua Kimmich?

Kimmich is 28 years of age and has been with Bayern since 2015, with his current contract running until 2025. Capable of playing as a right-back, holding midfielder or central midfielder, the £300,000-a-week man has already worked under Guardiola.

He made 36 appearances under the City boss during his time at Bayern, with Guardiola hailing the player seven years ago. Since then, Kimmich has gone from strength to strength, making close to 350 Bayern appearances and winning a total of 20 honours in Munich. Jose Mourinho previously praised Kimmich for his versatility, describing him as a “phenomenal” player.

"I see him as a top right-back, left-back, centre-back, No.6, No.8, No.10… he has the qualities to be anything!

"I think he looks to me, very intelligent related to football, very intelligent, understands the moments of the games and understands the difference between positions and understands what he has to do here and what he has to do there.

"I think he’s phenomenal, an absolutely phenomenal player."

Therefore, should Kimmich move to the Etihad, he would provide options in a number of areas, something which Guardiola could love, especially as right-back Kyle Walker is being linked with a move to Bayern Munich, and it looks as if a deal is one to watch.

Wolves: Insider wowed by "really good goalkeeper" Wolves want

Wolverhampton Wanderers bringing Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher to Molineux this summer would be an 'underrated' piece of business, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Is Caoimhin Kelleher moving to Wolverhampton Wanderers?

According to The Daily Mail, Wolves are keen to land Kelleher this summer, though any deal to sign the Republic of Ireland international would cost in the region of £20 million.

First-team openings have been hard to come by for the 24-year-old behind Alisson and it is now believed that he is ready to strike out on his own and leave Liverpool to try and gain senior involvement as a number-one goalkeeper elsewhere.

Nottingham Forest have turned their attention towards Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa and have identified the Portuguese stopper and Manchester United backup goalkeeper Dean Henderson as targets to strengthen their last line of defence, as per Telegraph Sport.

The £10k-a-week ace has also attracted interest from Tottenham Hotspur, Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford this window as speculation continues to swirl over his future, according to The Athletic.

Last term, Kelleher appeared just four times for Liverpool across all competitions, keeping two clean sheets in the process, as per Transfermarkt.

Kelleher's international manager, Stephen Kenny, has tipped the Cork-born man to leave Liverpool to seek more regular opportunities in the off-season, as per BBC Sport, stating: ""It looks like he will be on the move this summer, and it can only benefit him because he needs to play games. He has been starved of games this year and that has been a problem for him."

Speaking to Football FanCast, transfer insider Jones thinks that Kelleher would be a 'brilliant' addition to wherever he ends up if he chooses to leave Liverpool.

Jones told FFC: "Whoever gets Kelleher is going to be getting an underrated signing. He's a really good goalkeeper and more than that, he's got such determination to make it to the top level and become a number one that I think he'll be brilliant. I'm a really, really big admirer of him and I love the way that he's been able to step in for Liverpool in some big moments and just show complete confidence."

Who else is on Wolverhampton Wanderers' radar this summer?

According to The Athletic, Wolves are currently in discussions with West Ham United over a potential deal for veteran defender Aaron Cresswell, who could join for a fee in the region of £5 million.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist Jones has also revealed that Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo is someone who is garnering attention from eyes inside Molineux.

Fulham's Tosin Adarabioyo

Bristol City playmaker Alex Scott is reportedly edging closer to a move to Wolves as the Old Gold prepare to submit a third bid for the 19-year-old, who is valued at £25 million by his current employers, as per Football Insider.

Old Gold boss Lopetegui is a big admirer of Scott and made inroads to try and bring him to the West Midlands-based outfit in January before his advances were eventually blocked by Bristol City.

Wolves are set for a busy few weeks of action in the market and it will be intriguing to see who enters the fold at Molineux ahead of the new season getting underway.

Villa Could Land "Electrifying" £50m Bailey Upgrade

Aston Villa are reportedly eyeing Bayer Leverkusen gem Moussa Diaby, as Unai Emery prepares to add firepower to his squad at Villa Park.

After firing the Villans into Europe, the natural progression would be to add high profile names to the ranks in the Midlands, which is said to be on the agenda if recent reports are to be believed.

Could Aston Villa sign Moussa Diaby?

As reported by the Daily Mail, Villa have joined the race to sign the highly-coveted Diaby, with the Bundesliga sensation having also been linked to Arsenal already this summer.

The report claims that the Midlands side have expressed their interest in the £50m forward, in a move that could break the club’s record transfer fee.

It’s mentioned that Emery desires a wide player this transfer window, with Villa said to have ‘made a check’ on the Frenchman’s situation.

How good is Moussa Diaby?

Developing through the ranks of Paris Saint Germain’s academy, the 24-year-old winger made his mark in Europe after signing for Leverkusen in 2019.

Fast-forward four years and the Frenchman has contributed to 97 goals in Germany, scoring 49 and assisting 48 in all competitions for Die Werkself.

Hailed as “electrifying” by journalist Aaron Stokes, the Paris-born gem could be a revelation under Emery, and provide a firm upgrade to options already on show at Villa Park.

Deployed primarily as a right-winger, Diaby has the capabilities to be played on the opposite flank as well as through the middle as a striker, however, he provides a more potent threat on goal on the right as a left-footed player.

Bayer Leverkusen's Moussa Diaby

His versatility along the front line could be vital for Emery to revolutionise his inherited squad at Villa Park, and equip better options in the final third to prompt the club to reach further heights during his first full season in charge.

The Frenchman could arrive in the Midlands to a familiar face, with Leon Bailey being his former teammate at Leverkusen, however the Jamaican could be less thrilled to see the 24-year-old on such an occasion.

Branded as “inconsistent” by Villa legend Gabriel Agbonlahor via Football Insider, Bailey could have his position in the squad threatened by the potential arrival of Diaby, who has outperformed the winger since his Bundesliga exit.

When comparing the two on their respective 2022/23 campaigns, it could suggest worrying times ahead for the 25-year-old.

As per FBref, Diaby averaged 0.30 non-penalty goals per 90, as well as showing a threat in possession with an average of 4.17 progressive carries and 1.83 carries into the penalty area per 90 in the Bundesliga, as a marker of his creative prowess.

Bailey registered lower averages in such areas, recording 0.18 non-penalty goals per 90, with 3.89 progressive carries and 1.74 carries into the penalty area per 90.

The two show similar threat in the progression of their 1v1 ability, with the Frenchman averaging 0.47 successful take-ons that led to a shot attempt, fractionally more than the Villa man who averaged 0.46 per 90.

Diaby could prove to be a stronger outlet for those around him also, averaging 1.93 key passes and 0.40 through balls per 90 to Bailey’s 1.37 key passes and 0.18 through balls, via FBref comparisons, suggesting that the Jamaican may have to raise the bar to maintain his spot.

Monchi could then pull off a masterclass in signing Diaby as an attacking upgrade, such is his status as one of the most threatening wingers in Europe.
