Fast bowlers finally end Australia's worst ODI streak

After seven losses in a row, Australia secured a hard-fought win as Marcus Stoinis took three wickets

The Report by Liam Brickhill09-Nov-2018Australia 231 (Carey 47, Lynn 44, Rabada 4-54, Pretorius 3-32) beat South Africa 9 for 224 (Miller 51, du Plessis 47, Stoinis 3-35)Australia secured a cathartic, series-levelling victory in the second ODI against South Africa in Adelaide, holding the visitors to 9 for 224 to win by seven runs. The bowling attacks slugged it out as batsmen on either side struggled to build on their starts, with four men reaching the 40s but none able to play the decisive innings. Australia were bowled out an over and a half shy of their 50 overs for 231, and South Africa fell short despite David Miller’s fifty.Cross-seamed deliveries and cutters brought the most profit for bowlers on both sides, Dwaine Pretorius picking up 3 for 32 in the afternoon and Marcus Stoinis making several crucial breakthroughs for a return of 3 for 35 that turned the match decisively. Kagiso Rabada’s extra bounce brought him 4 for 54, with three of those dismissals being caught behind, but South Africa’s efforts with the ball were ultimately bettered by Australia’s to keep the series alive heading into the third match in Hobart on Sunday.Marcus Stoinis is pumped•Getty ImagesSouth Africa’s top order made a lot of the same errors in execution as Australia’s had earlier in the day, as well as coming up with a few of their own. Reeza Hendricks nicked an off-stump outswinger from Josh Hazlewood, but Quinton de Kock and Heinrich Klaasen fell to deliveries they should have scored off, de Kock flicking off his pads against Mitchell Starc straight to Adam Zampa at fine leg and Klaasen pulling a half tracker into Chris Lynn’s lap at midwicket. Even more reproachable was Aiden Markram’s dismissal, run out for 19 taking on Stoinis’ arm for an unlikely third to ruin what had been a mostly fluent start in the Powerplay despite the pace and swing of Starc with the new ball. The upshot was that South Africa were four down inside 15 overs in their chase, but with Miller and Faf du Plessis at the crease they steadied the chase. There was parity in the scoreline through the first 20 overs of both innings, though South Africa had lost more early wickets to be 4 for 95 to Australia’s 2 for 96.Du Plessis and Miller were doing a commendable job of absorbing the pressure placed upon them when – against the run of play – du Plessis chopped a short ball from Pat Cummins onto his own stumps to fall for 47.After 35 overs, the scorelines were still neck and neck, with South Africa having reached 5 for 162, and when Pretorius spliced a pull tamely to midwicket shortly before the match entered the final 10 overs, the set-up was virtually identical to what had transpired in Australia’s innings. Where Alex Carey had been their only set batsman at the death in the first innings, for South Africa that job fell to Miller. He brought up a 68-ball fifty in the 41st over – the first batsman of the series to reach the mark – but the pressure upon him increased significantly when Stoinis beat Dale Steyn with another cross-seamed delivery. South Africa were 7 for 184 with 48 still needed from 50 ballsThat soon became 8 for 187 when Stoinis trapped Miller in front for 51, a review overturning Umpire Michael Gough’s original not out decision. Australia finally pulled ahead of South Africa as the visitors’ tail briefly wagged but never really threatened to overturn their total as Aaron Finch expertly marshaled his bowling resources.Australia’s batsmen had crumbled in similar fashion to the sustained pressure of a South African attack that gave no quarter in the afternoon. Aaron Finch, Shaun Marsh, Lynn and Carey all got in and then got out, and every time Australia built up a little momentum, South Africa found a breakthrough, repeatedly exhibiting their ability to prise set batsmen from the crease.Or rather, Australia’s batsmen repeatedly found ways to get out, with poor shot selection throughout the top order. Travis Head fell playing across his front pad early, Marsh wafted outside off stump to be caught behind for 22, and Finch dragged on against Pretorius for 41.Australia’s innings slowed as Imran Tahir tied Lynn and Carey down with a tight, wicket-to-wicket line, and with singles difficult to come by, Lynn banked on his boundary-hitting ability to keep the score ticking over. But the same attacking instincts lead to his dismissal for a run-a-ball 44 when he greeted Rabada’s return to the attack in the 27th over with 18 off the first four balls, and then gloved a bouncer off the fifth. Having been carted to all corners in the previous four deliveries, Rabada roared his celebration at the dismissal as he ran past the departing batsman – possibly putting himself in danger of a sanction from match referee Jeff Crowe. The procession continued as Glenn Maxwell flashed a cut off Pretorius through to de Kock, Stoinis heaved across the line to present Hendricks with a stinging chance at midwicket, and Cummins and Starc were both beaten for pace by Steyn.Following the pattern set by those ahead of him in the order, Carey battled his way to 47 and then misjudged the bounce on a length delivery from Rabada, guiding an edge through to de Kock for his fourth catch behind the stumps. Zampa gave the innings just a little oomph with a quickfire 22 and those runs, plus his fightback with the ball after an expensive five overs, would prove vital in the eventual outcome.

Jake Ball, the Nottinghamshire and England pace bowler, has been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a back problem.Ball picked up the problem in the T20 Blast against Derbyshire at the beginning of August and has not been able to play since.Nottinghamshire face Somerset in the final T20 Blast quarter-final on Sunday and are currently third in Division One of the County Championship. Ball had taken 28 Championship wickets at 22.25 in six matches, but had only managed three wickets in six T20 matches at an economy of 9.26.”I’m extremely disappointed to get the news, I’d hoped to be back for the final parts of the season but unfortunately that isn’t possible,” Ball said.”I’ll be following and supporting the boys and hopefully we can get through to Finals Day and have a go at defending our title.”For me I’ll be working hard on my rehab so that I can have a full winter programme and be raring to go for next season.”Ball featured occasionally for England during the 2018 season, playing the final ODI against Australia at Old Trafford – where he held his nerve with the bat to allow Jos Buttler to secure a one-wicket win – and was also part of two of the T20Is against India. He might have been in the frame for a spot on the one-day tour of Sri Lanka in October if there had been any injuries to the first-choice pace attack.

Liverpool: Mohamed Salah’s goal & stats record vs Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur host Liverpool in the Premier League this weekend. It means yet another fixture against Mohamed Salah – this will be the 19th time they've faced the Egyptian.

It's a remarkable number, given Salah only joined Liverpool in 2017. But his history against Spurs goes far beyond that. In fact, the forward has worn the colours of four different clubs against Tottenham.

This is quite the history, then, and it includes fixtures across the Premier League and European competition. There's the small matter of a Champions League final, too.

So just what has Salah accomplished across the 18 meetings with Spurs so far? Let's have a look at find out.

What is Mohamed Salah's goal record against Tottenham?

As you might expect, Salah's record here is very good. It's pretty fantastic against all clubs, mind, particularly those he's primarily faced since joining Liverpool.

But Salah first faced Tottenham back in 2013 as part of a Basel side thriving in the Europa League. They met Spurs in the quarter-finals and the Egyptian scored a vital goal in the second leg. Both games finished 2-2, with the Swiss team winning on penalties.

Two years later – and after a disappointing spell with Chelsea – Salah faced Spurs in the Europa League once more, this time with Fiorentina. And, again, he scored as the Italians triumphed 3-1 on aggregate.

Two years later, he was at Liverpool and scoring in both games against Tottenham in that debut season. Salah has been fairly prolific since, wracking up a total of 11 goals in his 18 appearances vs Spurs in all competitions.

In fact, only one team has conceded more to Salah than Spurs (Manchester United).

What is Mohamed Salah's head-to-head record against Tottenham?

Salah's head-to-head record is pretty much always great against English sides, such has been Liverpool's overall form since 2017. Across 18 meetings so far, he's won 11 – funnily enough the same number of goals he has.

Spurs have only actually beaten Salah twice, too. There are a couple of strange things about that, notable how the defeats were with Chelsea and Liverpool, rather than Basel and Fiorentina. Salah's only appearance for the Blues against Spurs was a defeat (though, he only played 18 minutes).

But on top of that, there's the nature of the defeats: 5-3 with Chelsea, 4-1 with Liverpool. Not exactly tight, narrow defeats, then.

Overall, though, Salah's record against Tottenham is fantastic. He's unbeaten in his last 12, dating back to the first time he represented Liverpool against them.

What is Mohamed Salah's Premier League record against Tottenham?

Salah's first Premier League appearance against Spurs was a disaster. He came on as a substitute for Chelsea, playing the last 18 minutes at White Hart Lane in a 5-3 defeat.

His second? Liverpool went to Spurs and while Salah scored, his team lost 4-1. Not exactly a happy hunting ground at the time, then.

To say things have turned around since then would be an understatement. Liverpool have come up against Tottenham 11 more times in the Premier League and Salah has started every fixture. They are completely unbeaten in that time, with only three draws.

Salah has seven goals in that period, too, to go with the strike he had in the 4-1 defeat. All in all, Tottenham haven't gotten the better of the Egyptian and Liverpool since 2017.

What is Mohamed Salah's record against Tottenham in Europe?

Well, if his Premier League record impressed, just look at this one.

Salah has faced Tottenham in both the Europa League and the Champions League. In doing so, he's represented three different clubs – Basel, Fiorentina and Liverpool.

The first European meetings were in 2013's Europa League quarter-finals. Salah scored in the second leg before Basel won on penalties. The second was two years later in the Europa League first knockout round. The forward also scored in the second leg as Fiorentina won 3-1 on aggregate.

So that's two ties, two wins, and two goals. But neither compare to 2019 when Salah was the star for Liverpool as they faced Tottenham in the UEFA Champions League final.

This was a bizarre game, really. Liverpool won an early penalty for handball and up stepped Salah to score it. The Reds were then essentially able to see out the rest of the game, limiting Spurs to very little before Divock Origi wrapped things up for 2-0.

It's the biggest goal in the biggest game of Salah's career – and he'll likely never top it.

What is Mohamed Salah's record at Tottenham?

Okay, so how does Salah actually do when playing at Spurs? Well, he's not as productive as he is at home.

Only three of Salah's 11 goals have come in away fixtures – and it's notable that he scored twice in his most recent visit. Before last season, the record read played eight, scored one.

But then you can easily argue that the most recent result is really the most relevant one here by far. We also want to note that Salah only has one assist against Tottenham, and it did come in an away fixture back in January 2020.

Not too much to shout about, then, but with reason for optimism heading into this upcoming fixture. Spurs, though, usually do find a way to shut Salah down on their own patch.

How did Mohamed Salah do against Tottenham last season?

Salah absolutely thrived against Spurs last time out – even if Liverpool did all they could to throw things away. The Reds narrowly picked up two wins should have been a lot more comfortable.

The away tie was first. Salah scored twice inside 40 minutes to send Liverpool into the break 2-0 up. A tight second half saw Spurs pull one back but the Reds held on to win.

The home tie was one to remember. Liverpool ran riot – 3-0 up after 15 minutes and Salah got the third. It was remarkable. What was even more remarkable than that was how Spurs fought back for 3-3 as Richarlison equalised on 93 minutes.

And then we got even more remarkable. Liverpool, having thrown it away, found a last-minute winner as Diogo Jota slotted home for 4-3.

Two wins for Liverpool, then, and three goals for Salah. Spurs will be out for revenge, in other words.

Tottenham 1-2 Liverpool (Salah: 11th, 40th) Liverpool 4-3 Tottenham (Salah: 15th) How has Mohamed Salah started the season?

Liverpool forward Mo Salah.

Salah's future was in doubt towards the end of the transfer window, putting a weird light on his form. A massive, potentially world-record offer, from Saudi Arabia was rejected by Liverpool. We imagine that one will come back around.

But on the pitch, Salah has been exactly what you'd expect: fantastic. There is a weird little quirk about his form, though.

Salah has three Premier League goals – all of which have come in home fixtures. He also has four Premier League assists – all of which have come in away fixtures. Judging by that, you can expect the forward to be at his creative best against Tottenham.

He does have an away goal, though. Salah came off the bench for Liverpool against LASK in the Europa League, playing 16 minutes and scoring an excellent goal to wrap the game up at 3-1.

In short, Salah is thriving. He's played seven games, one from the bench, and has eight goal contributions – four goals, four assists. Tottenham beware.

How have Liverpool and Tottenham started the season?

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk.

Both teams are flying right now despite real doubts during the transfer window. Liverpool, after all, lost Roberto Firmino, Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Firmino had already been replaced but the other exits required a mass overhaul in midfield.

Rejections from key targets made that difficult but despite that, Jurgen Klopp's team have only dropped two points in six games. They're second in the Premier League and look completely rejuvenated after last season – even if they're yet to manage a clean sheet.

Tottenham also had a big transfer window, losing Harry Kane to Bayern Munich and then not really replacing him. It doesn't appear to have mattered, though, and new boss Ange Postecoglu has them playing wonderful football and winning games. A 2-0 win against Manchester United raised eyebrows, as did a 98th-minute comeback for three points against Sheffield United.

Spurs are now fourth – four points off top and two behind Liverpool.

When is Tottenham vs Liverpool?

Liverpool forward Mo Salah.

Tottenham host Liverpool at 17:30 UK time on Saturday, September 30th. It promises to be a huge game for both teams.

They're each looking to make a loud statement, after all. Win this one and they'll appear like Manchester City's greatest early challenger while also highlighting that any summer doubts weren't necessary.

Expect a thrilling fixture here, then. Two flying teams that usually put on a show regardless of their form.

Newcastle: Toon star who lost possession 19x has now made himself undroppable

Newcastle United returned to winning ways after their 0-0 draw with AC Milan as they romped to a remarkable 8-0 victory over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane in the Premier League on Sunday.

Dan Burn, Sven Botman, Sean Longstaff, Callum Wilson, Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes, Alexander Isak, and Miguel Almiron all found the back of the net in a thumping performance from the Magpies which saw eight goalscorers in a Premier League match for the first time ever.

That said, one of those who didn't get on the scoresheet, Kieran Trippier, deserves some praise for his industrious display down the right flank.

How did Kieran Trippier perform against Sheffield United?

Trippier produced an outstanding performance at the back for Eddie Howe's side as he provided three assists from his right-sided berth with his exceptional crossing ability.

He assisted Burn's header with an excellent inswinging corner that was met by the towering defender at the back post to make the score 2-0 at the time.

Another giant defender got his head on the end of a set-piece from the England international to make it three just a few minutes later as Sven Botman brilliantly guided a free-kick into the far corner with a terrific finish.

Trippier completed his hat-trick of assists just before the hour mark as his perfectly weighted cross into the six-yard box allowed Wilson to convert from close range.

Newcastle defender Sven Botman.

The former Atletico Madrid star was not the only star of the show as Anthony Gordon also stood out as one of Howe's shining lights against the Blades.

How did Anthony Gordon perform against Sheffield United?

The former Everton winger only directly contributed to two of the eight goals but was the catalyst for a lot of Newcastle's play throughout the game with his electric performance out wide.

Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon.

He came on to replace the injured Harvey Barnes in the first half and sparked the game into life almost immediately with his assist for Longstaff's opening goal by keeping the ball in play before providing a perfect cutback for the midfielder.

Gordon was regularly pressing and harassing Sheffield United's defenders and set the tone for the rest of his teammates as they piled constant pressure on their opponents, which in turn led to their ruthless display at the top end of the pitch.

The exciting winger, who was hailed as "outstanding" by Sky Sports commentator Jamie Carragher during their coverage of the match, had 50 touches of the ball throughout the match and showcased his creativity with a number of fantastic passes and crosses.

Gordon, who assisted the first goal, created three 'big chances' for his teammates – more than any other player on the pitch – and completed 100% (2/2) of his attempted dribbles, as per Sofascore.

He also displayed his ability to disrupt the opposition when they had possession with three tackles and one interception, which showed that the English starlet put the hard work in off the ball to win it back for his side, despite the more-than-comfortable scoreline.

Sofascore rewarded him with a rating of 9.4 for his performance which happened to be the joint-highest of the match alongside Guimaraes, with Trippier just behind on a 9.3.

Even if he did lose the ball a worrying 19 times throughout the clash, Gordon was truly rampant and played a crucial role in Newcastle's play in and out of possession to set the tone for their thumping victory in Yorkshire on Sunday.

As Aaron Stokes of the Chronicle suggested at full-time, he has just made himself truly "undroppable" with such a lively outing.

Northeast shows brave defiance but Virdi's twirl the talk

Hampshire’s recent batting signing made a big impression, but Surrey were not to be denied

Paul Edwards at Kia Oval23-Apr-2018
Scorecard”The truth is that if old Gareth Batty hadn’t suffered a back spasm, Virdi would never have played in that match at all.” In such a fashion might a Surrey supporter begin his favourite tale of how a 19-year-old offspinner took four wickets on two unseasonably benign April days and helped his team to a 139-run victory against Hampshire. His listeners in the pub will order a final pint and then listen attentively, albeit to a story they already know quite well. They might guess that Sam Northeast’s first hundred for his new side will be downplayed but they can fill in those gaps themselves. They will recall that at a time when England were looking for batsmen who could bat long Northeast defied Surrey’s attack for nearly a day and made 129, an innings that was only ended when Ben Foakes’ brilliant one-gloved diving catch off Matt Dunn settled the match. An epic effort, some called it, although the praise was more muted in Kent, the county he had left in the close season. Until he was dismissed Northeast hardly looked in trouble, even when Rory Burns gave Jade Dernbach three forward square legs, the fielders standing so close they could have held a seance. In the pub, meanwhile, our storyteller might be impersonating Amar Virdi’s exultant scamper up the pitch when he trapped a sweeping Rilee Rossouw for 29 inside an hour of the final morning at The Oval. If so, other drinkers might be disturbed, but the landlord, a benevolent fellow, will know there is no mischief in it, just as there was no gloating about Virdi’s celebrations, merely the precious joy of youth. And for once this will not be a tale given wings by alcohol. Virdi did not even bowl in Hampshire’s first innings yet his 4 for 79 was a fitting counterpart to this season of daring growth. The trees are forming their generous arcades in Tooting Graveney and there are even blossoms shading the thickets of brickwork surrounding The Oval. To see young cricketers do well in September is to receive reassurance about the following year; to watch players like Virdi excel in springtime is to feel consonance with the seasons.”Eyes, ears are old. But not the sense of spring. / some inward watcher warns. It was not difficult to summon Siegfried Sassoon’s lines in “Another Spring” to mind on this fresh Monday at The Oval where the brisk wind helped Virdi’s drift. They fitted the mood perfectly as Kyle Abbott drove the spinner’s well-flighted ball to short mid-on, where Burns took the catch. By then, though, Liam Dawson had inside-edged a back foot drive off Dernbach into his stumps and it was only Northeast’s sound technique which allowed Hampshire to lunch on 212 for 7.The same patient skill was again in evidence during an afternoon session in which Surrey took only the wicket of Chris Wood, who was leg before to Sam Curran after hanging around for 55 minutes in making 26. That innings, though, was the prelude to nearly 90 minutes propping and blocking by Brad Wheal, who was at the wicket when Northeast pushed the single which took him to his 171-ball century. There were times during that 68-run stand when the Oval pigeons looked more of a threat to the batsmen’s sangfroid than the bowlers. They were certainly just as stubborn, defying thrown caps, waved bats and, no doubt, the occasional Anglo-Saxon rebuke. In the end it was Dernbach, himself no stranger to the caustic rejoinder, who took the ninth wicket with the fifth delivery after tea when his slower-ball yorker made Wheal the 17th batsmen in the match to fall leg before. Then, with 23.4 overs left to be bowled Dunn ran in from the Pavilion End and nipped one wickedly away from Northeast.”So anyway,” our storyteller in the pub will conclude, “that’s how a young bloke who wasn’t supposed to be playing in the match ended up helping to win it for Surrey. Their next game was against Lancashire at Old Trafford. And do you know what happened there? Well…””Time, gents, ,” calls the landlord. “You’ll have to tell them that story another day.” And, indeed, he will.

West Ham In The Race For "Complete" Teenage Coufal Upgrade

West Ham United are in the race to sign one of Spain’s most gifted and promising youngsters…

What’s the latest West Ham transfer news?

According to Marca Valladolid, the Irons are in a fight to sign Real Valladolid’s Ivan Fresneda, after Crystal Palace opened talks with the Spanish club with a view to making an offer.

Read the latest West Ham transfer news HERE…

Chelsea and Sporting CP are also said to be interested in the right-back.

As previously reported by SPORT, the 18-year-old is valued at around €15m (£13m) by Valladolid, who recently suffered relegation to La Liga 2.

Would Ivan Fresneda be a good signing for West Ham?

The defender was born in the Spanish capital, and joined Real Madrid’s youth setup in 2014, before leaving the club in 2018. He eventually signed for Valladolid in 2020, and despite only forging 26 appearances for the senior side, has firmly established himself as one of the continent’s most eye-catching talents.

This perspective has been reinforced by Matt Clark of the LaLiga Lowdown, who highlighted Fresneda’s accomplished profile and limitless potential, saying: “He is a remarkably complete right-back despite his young age, balancing his defensive duties with the odd attack too.

"He has that coveted combination of physicality and technical ability. Tall but agile, quick and athletic, he is also strong in the tackle and reads the game very well for someone so green when it comes to first-team football.”

The teen’s defensive acumen is mirrored by his rank within the best 9% in Europe’s top five leagues among his positional peers for blocks per 90 and clearances per 90, as well as the highest 21% for tackles per 90.

Moreover, The Athletic revealed he is a high-quality ball winner, winning 75% of his duels, with only one LaLiga full-back, his teammate Luis Perez, possessing a better success rate.

Following the end of last year, Fresneda was just one of seven players aged 17 or younger to play over 1,000 minutes of first-team football in Europe’s big five leagues, to signify his growing quality and importance to his team.

Ivan-Fresneda

Therefore, a player on this trajectory is more than capable of becoming a useful asset for a Premier League side. From a West Ham perspective, Fresneda can be viewed as an ageing and less dynamic Vladimir Coufal.

The 31-year-old has been a solid and reliable servant for the Hammers, having featured in 91 of the club’s last 116 domestic games.

His lack of pace, directness, and attacking threat are major drawbacks to his game, and he fails to embody the full nature of the ‘modern full-back.’

Fresneda, who played for a far worse side last year, demonstrated that he can outperform Coufal in this respect. Over the past 365 days, the prodigy scores better than the Czech for progressive carries per 90 (2.48 vs 2.37), successful take-ons per 90 (0.77 vs 0.13), and pass completion per 90 (77% vs 62.2%).

Whilst his offensive output isn’t prolific, as he failed to record any assists last term, this is mainly due to the lack of quality in Valladolid forwards, who managed just 33 goals in the league, the second-lowest in the division.

Therefore, Fresneda, who has been hailed as someone with “good technique” and “great energy” by Emmanuel Petit, could flourish at the London Stadium.

New Zealand inflict another collapse to seal innings victory

West Indies’ resistance came undone on the fourth day as they lost eight wickets in under one-and-a-half sessions to lose by an innings

The Report by Andrew Fidel Fernando04-Dec-2017
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Neil Wagner rejoices after having Roston Chase caught at leg slip•Marty MelvilleAFP/Getty ImagesThe defiance that West Indies had found on day three wilted, their wickets fell in a heap for the second time in the Test, and New Zealand sped to an innings-and-67-run victory – the hosts’ quicks having wiped the opposition out with the second new ball. Following the top-order partnerships West Indies had mounted on Sunday, it was the rate of their demise on Monday that was dispiriting. They added only 105 to the overnight score, and lost their last seven wickets for 62 runs, in the space of 20 overs. The New Zealand quicks shared the wickets around, as the opposition perished to a series of poor strokes. Matt Henry added the wicket of Roston Chase to the two dismissals he had effected on day three, to finish with figures of 3 for 57. Trent Boult, Neil Wagner and Colin de Grandhomme claimed two wickets apiece meanwhile – Wagner’s wickets particularly significant, after he had been clobbered by the top order on Sunday. This result means that New Zealand go to the second Test without having been stretched at Wellington. Although there were difficult moments in the field, particularly while Shimron Hetmyer and Kraigg Brathwaite batted together on the third evening, no bowler was required to deliver more than 45 overs in the Test, and at no point did West Indies muster a century stand. It was the wicket of innings top-scorer Brathwaite – the only dismissal that went to a spinner in this innings – that set West Indies’ slide into motion. Having begun the day on 79, Brathwaite had progressed without incident into the 90s, as New Zealand rested their frontline quicks so they might be deployed only after the second new ball became available. Even before the 80th over rolled around, however, Brathwaite lost his wicket. Having nudged a legside Mitchell Santner delivery to the fine leg boundary, he misjudged the pace of the very next Santner delivery, and it brushed his back pad before it hit his bat. The ensuing lbw appeal was turned down on the field, but the batsman was given out upon review. Only 17 runs had been added to the overnight score at that stage. Then, from the 86th over, came the rapid collapse. Shai Hope, whose innings had been defined by its reticence, was dismissed playing a defensive shot – a Boult lifter finding his outside edge, then Kane Williamson’s hands in the gully. Roston Chase, who had hit Boult for consecutive boundaries to get his innings under way, did not last long following Hope’s exit, inside-edging a wide Henry ball on to his stumps.West Indies went to lunch with five wickets remaining, but New Zealand needed less than an hour after resumption to close the game out. Debutant Sunil Ambris edged de Grandhomme to wide slip, first ball after the break. Then, next over, Shane Dowrich slashed Wagner to point – it was the first ball Dowrich had faced in the session. The tail was in no mood to resist. Kemar Roach, Jason Holder and Miguel Cummins were all out in the space of 28 balls. What was particularly disappointing for the West Indies was that the pitch had long since begun to favour batsman, and though the second new ball offered the New Zealand seamers bounce and carry, there was no dramatic movement. The only positive for the visitors, apart from some decent top-order scores, is that they now have an extra day of preparation for the Hamilton Test, which begins on Saturday.
