Arne Slot is no Brendan Rodgers: Liverpool boss SHOULD bench Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and star men for Real Madrid showdown ahead of huge Premier League fixtures

The Reds are basically guaranteed at least a Champions League play-off spot, so the focus should be on Sunday's huge clash with Manchester City

Florentino Perez has ongoing issues with UEFA's governance of the European game, so it's hardly surprising that the Real Madrid president is not a fan of the new Champions League format.

"It has increased the number of matches," the Spaniard said, "but reduced the value of each match." Of course, the irony of supporting a European Super League that would have yielded the exact same result was lost on Perez, but that doesn't mean he's wrong.

On the contrary, Madrid's meeting with Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday perfectly proves the point. What should have been one of the marquee matches of the league phase has been stripped of almost all jeopardy – certainly from Liverpool's perspective.

Consequently, Arne Slot should consider doing something that outraged Reds – and an awful lot of interested observers – when Liverpool faced Madrid at Santiago Bernabeu almost exactly 10 years ago…

Getty'Rodgers raised the white flag'

When the Liverpool teamsheet dropped ahead of the Champions League clash with Madrid on November 5, 2014, both the English and Spanish press were stunned. Brendan Rodgers had made seven changes to the side that had played Newcastle in the Premier League the previous weekend, with Steven Gerrard, Raheem Sterling, Philippe Coutinho and Jordan Henderson among those dropped to the bench.

Former Liverpool striker and Spanish football pundit Michael Robinson labelled it an "incredible starting 11" – and not in a good way. "It's one thing to give players rest and another to not respect the contest," the Irishman posted on Twitter. "I think Rodgers has made a mistake. Thousands of Liverpool fans have come to the Bernabeu to see five key players on the bench. Rodgers has raised the white flag of surrender before the game has started."

Robinson's sentiments were shared by presenter Gary Lineker, who said Rodgers had "thrown in the towel".

"Selecting a weakened side in Europe's premier competition, especially against Real Madrid, is unbefitting of a club of Liverpool's stature," the ex-England forward argued. "If I were one of Liverpool's star players, I'd be choked to be left out of a game at the Bernabeu against the European champions."

AdvertisementGetty'Far from throwing in the towel'

Rodgers defended his line-up after the game, effectively arguing that his second string's spirited showing in only losing 1-0 to Karim Benzema's first-half effort had vindicated his decision.

"The performance was far from throwing in the towel," he claimed. "Right to the very end my players put in a performance befitting of the wonderful club this is. That would be my answer [to the criticism]."

However, Rodgers lost an awful lot of credibility when he claimed that a team containing the likes of Lazar Markovic, Fabio Borini and Joe Allen "could get a result" and they had been "unfortunate" not to do so. It was also ludicrous for Rodgers to suggest that he hadn't been resting players for a must-win match with then-Premier League leaders Chelsea just four days later.

The Northern Irishman was under intense pressure at the time. Liverpool had blown a glorious chance to end the club's top-flight title drought the season before and made an atrocious start to the 2014-15 season. They were seventh in the Premier League table – and already 12 points behind leaders Chelsea – when they arrived in Madrid.

Rodgers, then, had clearly prioritised the Premier League – even though Liverpool were just as desperate for points in the Champions League, having already been beaten in Basel and lost at home to Madrid (they would eventually be eliminated after finishing third in weak group that also contained Ludogorets).

Getty'Devastated'

The rights and wrongs of the decision are still debated by Liverpool fans to this day. But what do we know for sure?

Firstly, treating the game "like a friendly on a summer to America", as put it, "greatly damaged" Liverpool's reputation in Spain. Secondly, the ageing Gerrard was among those upset by being benched for such a big game at the Bernabeu, and later admitted that the whole episode played a part in his decision to leave Liverpool at the end of the season.

"It was Real Madrid and I wanted to play," the Kop icon wrote in his autobiography. "When I was told I wasn't playing, for the sake of the team and the squad and my relationship with Brendan, I took it and I accepted it. But I sat on that bench devastated because I wanted to play, so it is one of those situations. It sort of pushed me making a decision to move on and try something different."

When one also considers that Liverpool lost their next game, against Chelsea, it's clear that Rodgers' controversial call could not have worked out any worse, as an awful lot of fans began to lose faith in him and were more than happy to see him sacked less than a year later.

gettyChance to pile pressure on Madrid

So, should Slot even consider resting his star men for Wednesday's meeting with Madrid at Anfield? After all, if Liverpool maintain their 100 percent recent in this season's Champions League by beating Los Blancos, they'd have a 73% chance of finishing in the top eight, which means progressing directly to the last 16 and avoiding two extra games in the play-off round. Essentially, the higher up the table Liverpool finish, the easier life should be for them going forward.

Mohamed Salah & Co. also have plenty of history with Madrid and would undoubtedly relish piling more pressure on Carlo Ancelotti's men, who only have six points on the board so far. Another defeat would actually put the reigning champions at risk of elimination, given their next outing is against unbeaten Atalanta in Bergamo.

However, even if Liverpool win, it's still highly likely that Madrid will find their way into the last 16 one way or another, given the farcically forgiving format. The Reds, then, really should only be thinking about themselves, and the cold, hard truth is that the meeting with Madrid pales into insignificance compared to Sunday's showdown with Manchester City.

Nottingham Forest hit gold on ace who’s worth more than Anderson & Niakhate

Nottingham Forest boss Nuno Espírito Santo has the opportunity to make his mark on the squad this summer for the first time since his arrival at the club back in December.

The former Wolves manager replaced Steve Cooper halfway through the campaign, unable to fully implement his system across to the players, but showing glimpses of promise towards the end of the season.

He was heavily reliant on striker Chris Wood to do the business for the Reds, with the New Zealand international scoring 14 Premier League goals – proving a lot of doubters wrong in the process.

However, with the new season just over a month away now, the Reds boss will still want to invest further into his playing squad to pull further clear of the drop zone in 2024/25.

Nottingham Forest’s transfer business this summer

Forest are no stranger to a transfer or two, making over 30 new additions to the squad since promotion back to the Premier League back in the 2021/22 season.

Nuno has wasted no time in further adding to his squad this summer, signing the likes of goalkeeper Carlos Miguel, young winger Eric da Silva Moreira and Newcastle star Elliot Anderson, with the latter costing £35m with Odysseas Vlachodimos going in the other direction.

Elliot Anderson for Newcastle

However, to avoid another PSR breach this season, the club have had to balance the books by parting ways with two important squad members.

Orel Mangala and Moussa Niakhate both left the City Ground to join French side Lyon, with the pair leaving the club for £20m and £27m respectively.

Whilst they’ve undoubtedly left a hole in Nuno’s squad, the club’s recent recruitment has provided hope that they can identify a suitable replacement to further improve the Reds squad.

Their excellent recruitment can be demonstrated by multiple players within the Forest first-team, including one talent who’s already proven to be value for money, with his market value taking a huge increase as a result.

Callum Hudson-Odoi’s market value in 2024

After arriving at the club from Chelsea during the summer of 2023, winger Callum Hudson-Odoi looked as though he would be a shrewd addition to the club after joining the Reds for a deal in the region of £3m last summer.

He made an instant impact on his first appearance for the Reds, scoring a goal-of-the-season contender against Vincent Kompany's Burnley side to secure a vital point for his new team.

However, fast forward to nearly a year on from his move to Trentside, he’s excelled in his first campaign in the East Midlands, scoring eight and providing one assist in his 29 outings for the club.

His form has seen strong interest from fellow Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur, with the Reds valuing Hudson-Odoi at £40m – an increase of 1,230% from the fee they paid for him less than 12 months ago.

He’s been an excellent addition to the club, becoming a crucial player under Nuno towards the tail end of the campaign – scoring three goals in the final three matches of the season.

Next season provides a fresh opportunity for the 23-year-old to build on the progress he’s made in recent months, potentially seeing his market value increase further.

European champions submit first bid for "wonderful" in-demand Celtic star

Whilst it's been a quiet summer so far on the incomings front, Celtic have now reportedly received their first offer from Atalanta to sign one of Brendan Rodgers' best players.

Celtic transfer news

There's no doubt that the Bhoys should feel confident about their current squad, given that they just won the Scottish Premiership for a third consecutive season, but with a new campaign just a month away, there may be some concerns over their lack of arrivals. So far, Celtic are yet to welcome a single addition, with their search to find a replacement for Joe Hart and land a permanent deal for Adam Idah reportedly ongoing.

Idah would be a particularly solid deal to kickstart a quiet summer for the Scottish champions, with his best form coming in a Celtic shirt last season and his goal sealing the Scottish Cup in dramatic fashion against Rangers. Reports suggest that Celtic are set to make an improved offer to sign the Norwich striker, but as one attacking talent arrives, those in Glasgow could lose arguably Rodgers' best player.

ByDan Emery Jul 10, 2024

According to reports relayed by Fabrizio Romano, Europa League winners Atalanta have made their first bid to sign Matt O'Riley from Celtic this summer, joining the race for the Dane's signature alongside the likes of Southampton and Leicester City. The Serie A club reportedly see O'Riley as an ideal replacement for Teun Koopmeiners, who has emerged as a target for Juventus this summer.

It remains to be seen just how much Atalanta have tabled to Celtic, but previous reports suggested that the Scottish giants value their midfielder at a hefty £30m this summer.

Why Celtic must keep "wonderful" O'Riley

Whilst it's likely an uphill battle, Celtic should do everything in their power to keep hold of O'Riley this summer and if they do sanction a sale, they must ensure that their price tag is matched. Given their low profile in the summer transfer window so far and how fast the new season is approaching, the Bhoys may not be well placed to find an adequate replacement against the clock, either, sparking further concerns.

It's no surprise that Rodgers was so full of praise for the Dane in an excellent campaign last time out, saying via Glasgow Live: "When I looked at his numbers and everything else I think I said to him you need to score more goals as he didn't do it enough. He was a bit like Jamesie Forrest when I first came into the club. He didn't score enough for the talent they had and I was looking at Matt from last season and his first goal was in February. You can't have that talent and be waiting that long.

"It is all about arriving in the areas and finding composure to finish. I really like him, his build-up play is good, he takes the ball, and he needs to work on his pressing and intensity but he is a wonderful footballer and he is a good guy as well."

Spurs could land the dream Son partner in £50m "warrior"

After an eventful Premier League season that saw them just fall out of the Champions League places and into the Europa League, Tottenham Hotspur look set for a busy summer.

Ange Postecoglou has had a year to figure out who he wants to keep in his team and the players he'd like to add.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou

Based on recent reports, he's a big fan of a player touted to be the club's first permanent edition of the window, a player who could work brilliantly with Son Heung-min.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report from The Athletic, Tottenham have maintained their interest in Chelsea's star midfielder, Conor Gallagher.

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher

The report claims that club officials and Postecoglou are big fans of the England international, and while the player would rather remain at Stamford Bridge, the Blues are prepared to listen to offers for their academy star.

The Athletic does not mention how much a potential deal could cost the Lilywhites, but journalist Ben Jacobs has reported that £50m should be enough to secure the player's signature.

Conor Gallagher for Chelsea

It would be an expensive move for Daniel Levy and Co to sign off, but with his performances this season, it would probably be worth it, especially as he could end up working brilliantly with Son.

Why Gallagher would work brilliantly with Son

There are several reasons why the boyhood Chelsea fan would be a brilliant teammate for the Lilywhites captain, but one of the most important is workrate.

England manager Gareth Southgate described the Cobham graduate as having "tremendous drive" and a pressing ability "as good as anyone in the league" earlier this season, which is immediately evident to anyone who watches the Cobham graduate.

Likewise, in his column for the BBC, pundit Michael Brown described the 24-year-old as someone with an 'unbelievable attitude' who 'covers an incredible amount of ground', which could be an incredibly useful attribute when playing alongside the soon-to-be 32 Son.

The South Korean is still an incredible footballer, as evidenced by his haul of 27 goals and assists this season, but as players get older, their ability to constantly sprint up and down the pitch will naturally diminish, and the former Bayer Leverkusen man is no different.

He might be able to continue as normal in the next season or two, but eventually, it will make more sense to allow the 122-capped international to stay forward and use a more active midfield to make up for his lost defensive output, which is precisely where the Chelsea man comes into play.

That said, while the Epsom-born "warrior", as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig, is willing to put in the hard yards for his team, he's not just an athlete. In 50 games this season, he scored seven goals and provided nine assists, more than James Maddison managed and more than Giovani Lo Celso and Rodrigo Bentancur returned combined.

Ultimately, while it might not be the most exciting transfer on the surface, adding the incredibly hardworking Gallagher to Postecoglou's high-intensity system could help supercharge the Lilywhites and allow Son to play to his strengths: scoring goals.

Wants to quit: £300k-p/w Man City star ready to leave as PSG eye transfer

One Manchester City star is now looking to leave the Etihad Stadium this summer despite Pep Guardiola's admiration for him, according to a new report.

However, despite City sitting top of the pile in six of the past seven seasons, it could be a summer of change on the blue side of Manchester. There have been rumours on a number of star players potentially leaving the Etihad, with Kevin de Bruyne's future unclear amid interest from Saudi Arabia.

Meanwhile, first-choice goalkeeper Ederson could also head for the exit door, with the Brazilian also having interest from the Saudi Pro League. Stefan Ortega’s future could also be decided in the next few weeks, with new contract talks stalling.

To make matters worse, an outfield star seemingly has his heart set on a move away over the coming months.

Bernardo Silva ready to leave Man City

According to Football Insider, Bernardo Silva has made a transfer decision and wants to leave the Etihad this summer. Paris Saint-Germain have made the midfielder a top target, with the £300,000-a-week star is now ready to quit after winning a sixth Premier League title in seven years.

As can be seen, his stint with the Sky Blues has been extremely successful, with Guardiola praising the 29-year-old on a number of occasions.

"Everybody loves him and we want him. He's really important for him to stay with us", said Guardiola after Silva’s FA Cup double against Newcastle United in March.

Back in October, the City boss also called Silva irreplaceable: "I could stay here and talk for 10 minutes on what Bernardo Silva means for me and our team. He is a player that is beyond good in all departments – solidarity, intelligence, he understands everything.

"We are in love with him. The problem is he has no big cars, he dress maybe not for high style. He is humble and everybody loves him in the locker room. We were lucky not to lose him. He is irreplaceable. I know he is happy here."

Sunderland eyeing move for "interesting" manager who could replicate Tuchel

It's been a difficult few months for Sunderland, who ended their Championship campaign with more of a whimper than anything else, but a new manager could now finally be on the horizon in what has been dubbed a shock move.

Sunderland manager news

If the Black Cats could go back, then the decision to part ways with Tony Mowbray may have never been made, especially since his replacement was Michael Beale. The former Rangers boss endured a nightmare spell to all but end Sunderland's play-off hopes, before Mike Dodds was handed the role on an interim basis.

Sunderland told £3,000-a-week star who Mowbray loved is going to leave

It could be a frustrating summer for the Black Cats…

By
Tom Cunningham

May 11, 2024

By the end of the Championship season, Sunderland found themselves 16th with the top six nothing more than a pipe dream and now their next appointment must be the right one. In that regard, the likes of Paul Heckingbottom and Steve Cooper have both been linked with moves to take the job, albeit without any announcement arriving.

Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper.

Both managers took charge in the Premier League this season before losing their jobs at Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest respectively. Out of a job ever since, the Sunderland job represents an opportunity that may come their way, unless the Black Cats opt for a reported shock target.

According to The Sun, Sunderland are eyeing a move for Bo Svensson, who left Mainz in November last year after two years in charge. The 44-year-old is reportedly a 'shock' target and could make his first foray into English football to follow in the footsteps of both Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel, who also went from Mainz to an eventual move to England, albeit with stops along the way.

Having previously been linked with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Svensson is certainly a manager who is rated highly and could now be left with the responsibility of taking Sunderland back into the Championship's top six.

"Interesting" Svensson can thrive where Beale failed

In need of a revival, turning to Svensson could be Sunderland's best bet. The former Mainz boss guided the Bundesliga side up to eighth in his best season at the club, before a drop off resulted in his exit at the end of last year.

Utilising a 3-4-2-1 formation, which is interestingly the same system that Xabi Alonso has enjoyed so much success with at Bayer Leverkusen, Svensson's style would help keep up the form of Jack Clarke all whilst adding the defensive cover that the Black Cats so desperately lack these days.

Having thrived in Germany's top flight for a period of time, the Dane should be more than capable of stepping into the Championship to do the job that Beal ultimately failed to do when handed the responsibility.

The appointment, should it take place, represents a more exciting option than the more familiar Cooper and Heckingbottom too, especially if Sunderland allow Svensson to build a project. Described as "interesting" by Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig, the young manager is certainly one to keep an eye on in the coming months, as the Black Cats weigh up their move.

David Willey enjoys five-star return after 'rollercoaster' England ride

Seamer had fallen out of love with the game but grabbed opportunity after recall to face Ireland

Matt Roller at the Ageas Bowl30-Jul-2020After missing out on World Cup selection last summer, David Willey wondered whether that was that for him in an England shirt.Coming into this series, he had missed England’s last 22 white-ball games, and had accepted that his international career was “probably done”. He had trudged his way through the county season after his 11th-hour omission last year, admitting that his main aim was to get off the field as soon as possible rather than placing too much emphasis on how he performed. It was in the Abu Dhabi T10, immediately after England’s T20I series in New Zealand, that he endured his lowest moments. “I just didn’t want to be there,” he said. “I didn’t want to go to the ground. When I was at the ground, I didn’t want to be there, and I wanted to get back to the hotel. I’d fallen out of love with the game, I think.”ALSO READ: Willey refreshed and relishing recall after thinking England career was overEight months later he was smiling again at the Ageas Bowl, celebrating four early wickets before adding one more at the death to complete a maiden international five-wicket haul as England romped to a comfortable victory against Ireland.”Circumstances have given me this opportunity,” he said. “I didn’t get a look in over the winter, I missed out there. The extended break has been really good for me. The timing for all of this has worked out perfectly for me and it was the icing on the cake.”Willey made technical adjustments during lockdown, hoping to find more swing with the new ball. Primarily, he tried to force himself to be more upright in his release, having released he had gone “past perpendicular” in the last couple of years when looking at video footage. He spent “a lot of time” on self-analysis, watching old clips alongside Richard Pyrah, his bowling coach at Yorkshire. “He’s had me badgering him at all times of the day in the winter and fortunately he has invested some time in me,” he said. “I feel like I’m moving in the right direction and I feel like my best cricket is probably still to come.”The knock-on effect was that he bowled from tighter to the stumps at the Ageas Bowl, and seemed to have found an extra half-yard of pace, too.His wickets came more through an attacking line and length than excessive movement. CricViz suggested he had never swung the ball so little in the first 20 overs, though he found more seam movement than in 33 of his 45 previous innings.According to ESPNcricinfo’s ball-by-ball data, the vast majority of his opening, six-over spell comprised either good-length (18) or full (nine) balls, plus two bouncers and seven back-of-a-length balls. He bowled straight, too, with 14 of his 36 balls arriving in line with the stumps.First to go was Paul Stirling, who chipped an inswinger to short midwicket, before Balbirnie edged behind playing at a ball in the channel which nibbled away late. Gareth Delany, the only man to really go after England, was caught at backward point driving at a full ball in the channel, before Lorcan Tucker was trapped in front by an inswinger on a length. It was heartening to see Willey grinning and bumping elbows with his team-mates, looking as though he was beginning to remember the feeling of enjoying himself on a cricket pitch. When he came back in his final spell, taking the final wicket as Craig Young plinked to mid-off to seal his five-for, he could scarcely conceal his joy.”My success has come when I’ve pitched the ball up previously and really that was what I tried to do today,” he said. “I kept the ball full which kept me in the game and I reaped the rewards of that.”It’s an unbelievable squad. You look at the players that still aren’t getting a look-in and the guys that went home from this camp: there are some brilliant cricketers sat on the sidelines that are still trying to find a way in.”It was just special to be out there playing for England again. The main priority was to enjoy it. I’ve gone away and worked quite hard to get back near my best. It’s been a rollercoaster, but I was just out there enjoying my cricket today.”For Ireland, inexperience against the angle was a possible explanation. They had faced under 50 overs of left-arm seam bowling in ODIs since 2018 coming into this series, significantly fewer than any other Full Member. While this was as poor as a start as you could imagine, the only way they will improve is through increased exposure.
