    WHAT HAPPENED?

Milan announced on Saturday that U.S international Christian Pulisic has earned the club's monthly MVP honors for his performances across multiple competitions.

The month began in Saudi Arabia, where Pulisic scored goals in back-to-back games to help Milan win the Supercoppa Italiana with triumphs over rivals Juventus and AC Milan. Back in Serie A, Pulisic scored against Parma to net his first goal since October before then scoring in the Champions League against Dinamo Zagreb.

Pulisic has now won AC Milan's monthly MVP twice this season, having previously claimed the award back in September. Also nominated for January were Rafael Leao, Strahinja Pavlovic, and Tijani Reijnders.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The award is another deserved one for Pulisic, who continues to have a standout season for Milan. Pulisic now has 12 goals in all competitions, with four of those goals coming in just seven Champions League matches.

He's Milan's joint-leading scorer in Serie A, level with Tijani Reijnders in three fewer games, while the American is also the club's joint-leading assister, level with Leao and Youssouf Fofana despite playing fewer matches as well.

Pulisic's personal success hasn't quite translated to Serie A success, though. Manager Paulo Fonseca was let go just before the new year, paving the way for the arrival of Sergio Conceicao. Milan currently sit seventh in Serie A, five points out of fourth-place with a game in hand. Additionally, they're in the playoff round of the Champions League, where they'll take on Feyenoord in mid-February.

A helpless Los Blancos side completely surrendered in front of their arch-rivals as they suffered a thumping 5-2 defeat against Barcelona in the final of the Spanish Super Cup in Jeddah on Sunday. Mbappe opened the scoring for Real with an early goal but they could hold on to their lead for just 17 minutes as Lamine Yamal scored a brilliant solo goal to bring his side back into the game, after which the floodgates opened for the Catalan club.

After the mauling at the hands of their rivals, manager Ancelotti did not shy away from pointing out the shortcomings of his players as he admitted that Mbappe was the only player who had a decent outing in El Clasico.

WHAT CARLO ANCELOTTI SAID

Speaking to reporters after the match, the Italian coach said: "You have to defend well to win these games. Barcelona deserved to win, they defended better than us. The team is not looking good, but I’m not going to point the finger at anyone. Mbappe had a good game, he was probably the only one who played well. I’m not going to name names on this, but we were not good from the first minute, and did not perform."

Defiant Jack Leaning fifty allows Kent to hold out for draw against Lancashire

A defiant half-century from Jack Leaning enabled Kent to cling on for a draw at Emirates Old Trafford as Lancashire confirmed their qualification for Division One of the LV=Insurance County Championship.Leaning’s unbeaten 53 from 199 balls ensured the visitors were eight down at the close of day four in a rain-affected match that had been dominated by the hosts since James Anderson’s 7 for 19 helped dismiss Kent for just 74 in their first innings.Lancashire pushed hard for the win with Tom Hartley’s best first-class figures of 4 for 42 giving them more than a sniff as the clock ticked down on a gloomy afternoon in Manchester.Play finally got underway at 1.10pm with Lancashire declaring overnight on 259 for 9 and a first-innings deficit of 185 for Kent to contend with.Subtract the England-bound Zak Crawley from the equation and this looked a big ask for a batting line up blown away by Anderson in similar conditions on day two. That impression was strengthened in the fourth over when Ollie Robinson had a horrible swipe at a wide delivery from Luke Wood and was caught by wicketkeeper Dane Vilas for 2.Anderson quickly weighed in with his 1,003rd first-class wicket after Jordan Cox edged one to second slip Rob Jones, whose parry found its way into the hands of a grateful Luke Wells standing next to him.Related

Kent were suddenly 31 for 2 and their prospects worsened when skipper Joe Denly clipped an innocuous delivery from Danny Lamb’s first over straight to Alex Davies at midwicket for 17 to leave the visitors 40 for 3.With the fourth-day pitch expected to turn, Lancashire might have rued Matt Parkinson’s England call up but the leg spinner’s replacement has been in fine form in the Vitality Blast and Hartley claimed Heino Kuhn for his first red ball wicket of the season when Kuhn edged to Wells at slip for 21.When Crawley’s substitute, Tawenda Mueye, was trapped in front by Hartley for 7, swiftly followed in the same way by Darren Stevens for 17 courtesy of Wells’ part-time leg spin, the writing was on the wall for Kent at 129 for 6 with only Leaning offering any resistance.Just before the last hour was called, Hartley struck again, claiming two wickets in three balls as first Matt Milnes edged behind for two and then Harry Podmore was clean bowled for a duck. But Leaning and an impressive James Logan, who finished unbeaten on 3, hung on to see out time and allow Kent a share of the spoils.

Player sold by Leeds for £8m struggling at new club, hooked in 2-1 defeat

One of Leeds United’s long list of summer departures is already enduring a nightmare start to his career at his new club.

The Whites will be glad to see the back of the summer transfer window, as it was a very difficult few months for the Championship side, as they lost several key players. But despite the departures, the Yorkshire side are living up to early season predictions, remaining unbeaten in the opening four league games of the season.

Leeds have an agreement in place to sign a new player.

ByBrett Worthington Sep 2, 2024 Leeds lose £137m in star players

Leeds brought in eight new players over the course of the summer, which was crucial given that they lost a whole host of key individuals over the three-month period.

The Whites saw 19 players leave Elland Road, with most of the money coming from four big moves as they sold Archie Gray to Tottenham Hotspur, Luis Sinisterra to Bournemouth, Crysencio Summerville to West Ham and saw Georginio Rutter join Brighton towards the end of the transfer window.

Georginio Rutter

Archie Gray

Crysencio Summerville

Luis Sinisterra

All four players were key for Leeds last season and would have been key again in this campaign as the club bids to return to the top flight. However, Premier League clubs came sniffing around, and in the end, what the club was offered was too good to turn down, as they racked up about £137m in total from summer sales.

Rutter was the last big departure, as he wrote an emotional farewell to fans on Instagram: “It’s hard for me to say goodbye, but the time has come for me to move on. When I joined Leeds, I knew I was becoming part of something special, but I didn’t realise how much this club would mean to me. Leeds United has been more than just a team for me – it’s been like a family that has supported and helped me grow.

“From day one, you, the fans, have always been there, cheering me on and showing me what it means to play for Leeds. You made me feel at home, and I will always remember that.

“My time here was full of hard work, great moments, and strong friendships. I’m leaving as a better player and a better person, and I’m really thankful for that. Even though I’m heading in a new direction, Leeds United will always be a part of who I am. I wish you all the best for the future and the challenges ahead. Thank you for everything, Leeds. I’ll never forget you. MOT, Georginio.”

£8m Leeds sale struggling at new club

Midfielder Glen Kamara is another player who left Elland Road this summer, as he joined French side Rennes. The Ligue 1 side are said to have bought Kamara for around £8 million after he played 42 times for the Yorkshire side last season.

Rennes may be considered a step up for the player, but it has been a difficult start for both the club and Kamara this season, as his new side have suffered two defeats out of three games. And while he has started all three, the Finland international was subbed off after 72 minutes over the weekend.

In the 2-1 defeat at Reims, Kamara had 39 touches of the ball and finished the game with an accurate passing rate of 87%. But the midfielder lost possession of the ball nine times and was dribbled past once in the 72 minutes he played. He finished that game with a Sofascore rating of 6.5 and was given a brutal 3/10 by the national media in France.

According to Stade Rennes Online, relayed by Leeds United News, Kamara struggled with the switch to playing in a two-man defensive midfield situation: “Efficient in the diamond, he completely sank as a pair in front of the defence. Nine ball losses at half-time, difficulties in passing, his pair with Matusiwa perforated without managing to create anything.”

Maresca may now personally green-light Chelsea exit for 2024 summer signing

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca could now be ready to green-light a late summer exit for one player they've only just signed this transfer window.

Chelsea set for busy end to summer transfer window

The west Londoners appear set to have a busy end to the summer, despite already making 12 signings in total over the course of these last few months.

Chelsea now open talks to sign £250k-per-week ace who's open to joining

It’s set to be a busy end to the window at Stamford Bridge.

ByEmilio Galantini Aug 28, 2024

Chelsea confirmed the arrivals of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Marc Guiu, Renato Veiga, Estevao Willian, Filip Jorgensen, Tosin Adarabioyo, Aaron Anselmino, Caleb Wiley, Omari Kellyman, Pedro Neto, Estevao Willian and Joao Felix for a total of around £271 million (including the £51m spent on Estevao), but Todd Boehly and BlueCo have showed no sign of slowing down as we fast approach the August 31 cut-off.

Widespread reports in the media indicate that Maresca wants to sign a prolific new striker for Chelsea before the deadline, with both Brentford's Ivan Toney and Napoli star Victor Osimhen the subject of late-window interest from Stamford Bridge.

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen

Chelsea made an inquiry over Toney earlier this week, according to an array of reliable sources like The Telegraph, while Maresca's side are believed to remain in ongoing talks to sign Osimhen as they scour the market for multiple centre-forward options.

Joao Felix is Chelsea's latest high-profile recruit, with the Portugal international enjoying a second debut to remember during their thumping 6-2 win at Wolves last weekend. Felix came off the bench to score on his return to the Premier League, but the 24-year-old may not be Maresca's final blockbuster transfer of the summer.

A new striker certainly seems like a very real possibility as we approach the final days, and it could spell bad news for Guiu. The 18-year-old joined Chelsea from Barcelona earlier this summer, to the tune of £5 million, and he made his debut off the bench during their opening weekend defeat to champions Man City at home.

Guiu played 24 minutes during the loss, and according to GiveMeSport, that could well be the only bit of action he sees in a Chelsea shirt this season.

Maresca could green-light surprise Chelsea exit for Guiu

GMS write that Maresca could personally sanction a Chelsea departure for Guiu, just weeks after they brought him in from Barcelona.

It is believed the current surroundings at Chelsea mean he's not guaranteed consistent game time in west London, so the club and Maresca could look to loan him out in the coming days to further his development.

There could be serious interest in taking the teenage striker on a temporary deal late in the window, and that is something which Chelsea chiefs are apparently willing to entertain.

If Chelsea manage to get a star striker like Toney and Osimhen over the line, Guiu's surroundings will be increasingly difficult for him, so this could well be one to watch.

Ipswich Town also in talks to sign another £30m forward alongside Szmodics

Ipswich Town are also in talks to sign a £30m "animal" alongside new signing Sammie Szmodics.

Ipswich Town making moves before Premier League opener

The Tractor Boys make their long-awaited return to the Premier League on Saturday as they host Liverpool in Arne Slot’s first game in charge of the Reds. After keeping hold of manager Kieran McKenna, Ipswich have been active in the transfer window, sealing six new signings before activity went into overdrive in recent days.

It was first revealed on Thursday that Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips will be moving to Portman Road on a season-long loan deal. A transfer, which has now been confirmed, doesn’t include an option to buy but the England international will surely rival Sam Morsy, Massimo Luongo and Jack Taylor in the heart of midfield.

Hours later, it was confirmed that the club have also agreed a deal with Blackburn Rovers for long-term target Szmodics. The attacker has been on the club’s transfer wishlist all summer and a transfer has also been officially completed.

However, Szmodics isn’t the only attacking target on the radar, with another update sharing talks over a further addition in the final third.

Ipswich Town hold Armando Broja talks

According to reliable reporter Stuart Wilson of the East Anglian Daily Times, Ipswich Town are also in discussions with Chelsea over a move for striker Armando Broja. He states that due to Broja’s £30m valuation, Ipswich would initially look to take the Albania international on loan.

Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth has since backed this claim up, saying on X: “Ipswich Town interested in signing Chelsea forward Armando Broja. Ipswich exploring conditions of a season long loan. Chelsea listening to offers.”

Chelsea striker Armando Broja.

The 22-year-old could be a smart option on loan alongside Phillips, with George Hirst’s pre-season knee injury set to keep him out for up to eight weeks.

Broja has had a number of loan spells away from Stamford Bridge, spending time with Vitesse, Southampton and Fulham. He scored 11 goals over in the Netherlands and netted nine goals with the Saints, however, he failed to score in eight appearances with Fulham for the second half of the previous campaign.

Described as an "animal" by The Athletic's Jacob Tanswell, Broja was also praised by Frank Lampard, who added: “He’s a very nice, very good lad and a very talented young boy. He came into us at the start of the Covid times, trained with us and showed the attributes that I think you’re seeing now in the Premier League at Southampton.

"He’s fast, strong, has a real eye for goal and he’s a very, very good young player so I’m very aware of his strengths in a Southampton team playing very well.”

A move could therefore be one to keep an eye on in what could be an extremely busy end to the window for McKenna and Ipswich chiefs behind the scenes.

Andre Fletcher 89 not out; Adelaide Strikers 68 all out

Andre Fletcher has repaid Melbourne Stars’ faith in him with a stunning 89 not out before Adam Zampa claimed 5 for 17 to set up a huge 111-run victory over Adelaide Strikers at the MCG.The Strikers were bowled out for just 68 chasing 180, their lowest total in BBL history, the third-lowest overall, and it was also the fourth-largest defeat by any team.Fletcher had not passed 18 in the first nine matches in the tournament but he overcame a lack of strike in the first 10 overs to reach his first half-century in T20 cricket in more than 12 months before destroying the Strikers’ quicks in the Power Surge to set up a match-winning total of 2 for 179.Fletcher revealed he received a phone call of encouragement from West Indies great Brian Lara a few days earlier, which inspired his innings.Andre Fletcher produced a spellbinding innings•Getty Images

He got good support from Glenn Maxwell (37 off 28) and Hilton Cartwright (30 not out off 17), though Cartwright’s innings possibly cost him a century. The Strikers attack lacked penetration without Rashid Khan and Peter Siddle, although Liam O’Connor and Daniel Worrall bowled tidily. The Strikers then succumbed to the Stars’ spin trio as they raced through the overs with rain looming on the radar. Maxwell and Zahir Khan set it up in the Powerplay and finished with 4 for 31 from eight overs combined. Zampa then finished the job as the rain began to fall claiming his second T20 five-wicket haul.Stoinis go-slowIt was a bizarre innings from Marcus Stoinis. He admitted to the media on Thursday that he had been struggling with how to build an innings under the new rules, having at times gone too hard in the four-over Powerplay and he even revealed he forgot about the Power Surge in the last game. Fletcher’s lean tournament has no doubt also played a part in his indecision. Stoinis faced 14 dots in total including 10 in Worrall’s first two overs. He has the confidence he can catch up but he never did, holing out to long-off to a borderline waist-high full toss from Danny Briggs for 13 off 26.Fletcher faced just 15 balls and reached his highest total of the tournament of 22 while Stoinis was at the crease. Maxwell walked out at No.3 and avoided his third consecutive golden duck, but the Stars crawled to 1 for 57 after 10 overs with O’Connor stepping into Rashid’s enormous shoes and bowling and excellent four-over spell. However, he wasn’t able to take any wickets to expose the Stars’ middle order. Maxwell and Fletcher opted not to take the Power Surge despite both men being set at the start of the 15th over and Maxwell holed out to long-on at an inopportune time.Spiceman runs hotFletcher hadn’t reached fifty in his last 30 T20 innings dating back to his century in the Bangladesh Premier League in 2019. Here, he got to his 50 off 36 balls at the end of the 16th and the relief on his face was palpable. The Stars took the Power Surge and Fletcher filled his boots. He torched Wes Agar and Worrall for four fours and two sixes as both quicks got their lengths horribly wrong delivering a mix of full tosses and length balls. Fletcher delivered a contemptuous no-look strike off Worrall over the long-on off the last ball of the Surge. He was 82 not out with 12 balls left in the innings but only faced two more. Cartwright made 30 not out off 17 balls with two sixes, two fours, and three twos leaving Fletcher to watch at the other end. Fletcher finally got on strike last ball of the innings and deposited Briggs over the sightscreen. He was emotional as he walked off the ground and received a lengthy embrace from his skipper Maxwell. He later revealed that the emotion was for his late uncle.Rain rush wrecks StrikersWith rain looming on the radar, Maxwell decided to race through three overs of spin in the Powerplay to get through five overs as quickly as possible. The gamble paid huge dividends as the Strikers slumped to 2 for 10. Alex Carey promoted himself to open with Phil Salt and both men fell cheaply. Salt gloved an attempted reverse sweep off Zahir to the keeper while Carey was clean bowled trying to launch Maxwell over long-on. Maxwell kept the spin attack rolling bowling just two overs of pace in the first 10 as the Stars defended just 57 to claim the Bash Boost point. Matt Renshaw and Jon Wells did not score a boundary off the spinners with Renshaw holing out to Zampa in the 10th over.Zampa shrugs off shoulder concernZampa hurt his shoulder diving in the field and had to spend some time sitting on the dug-out when he wasn’t bowling. But it didn’t affect his legspin as he put on another masterclass. The damage had been done by Maxwell and Zahir but Zampa was still needed to close out the 10th over and secure the Bash Boost point. He was far too good for the Strikers tail claiming four of the last five wickets.

After his impressive spell at Feyenoord, Kokcu made a high-profile move to Benfica in 2023 for a reported fee of around £20 million. In addition to his European exploits, Kokcu has been equally influential in the Primeira Liga, where he has registered two goals and three assists.

  • WHAT KOKCU'S FATHER SAID

However, Benfica are unlikely to part ways with the midfielder easily, and any potential transfer would reportedly cost Liverpool at least £67m. This gives hope to Halis that the Portuguese giants will be open to selling the midfielder if the right offer comes in.

“The most important thing now is Orkun’s focus, that he does well with Benfica,” he said. "But of course, players and trainers don’t have just one station, the staff knows that too. In modern football, clubs think about finances, about making a profit. Orkun is a player who has the potential to make a profit with the next step. The fans and the club are also fine with that, of course. That was also the project. We’ll see where he ends up.”
