Sri Lanka guard against travel weariness

The injuries to two major Sri Lankan bowlers will help Bangladesh as they look to bounce back after a massive defeat in Mirpur

Big PictureHaving received their fourth-worst clobbering in Mirpur, Bangladesh need to find their resolve to make the Chittagong Test more of a contest. Peppered by bouncers in the first Test, the Bangladesh batsmen appeared more interested in providing short-lived entertainment than working through the tough periods. The end result was the kind of performance that diminished the advances Bangladesh have made in Test cricket.Though the batting was their most conspicuous failure, Bangladesh will also want to eliminate the fielding mistakes that squandered key chances in Mirpur. Their bowling was not as toothless as Sri Lanka’s total of 730 for 6 suggests, but they too could do with a boost in spirit. Two injuries to major Sri Lanka players will make Bangladesh’s task easier in the second Test, however. Rangana Herath’s problematic knee has flared up and Shaminda Eranga has a thigh strain after a month of heavy work, ruling both out of the Test.*Perhaps in light of their workload over the past month (they played 18 Test-match days in January), Sri Lanka have had an unusually casual lead-in to the second Test. They trained at a low intensity on both days before the Test, perhaps also concerned that sore bodies could lead to more injury. Some players may also be beginning to experience tour fatigue. Sri Lanka were in the UAE since the first week of December, and had fewer than 48 hours at home before they left for Bangladesh. With the limited-overs matches and Asia Cup also on the horizon, there is no end in sight. Their challenge will be to stay motivated and in control of their cricket. There have been four series since 2010 where Sri Lanka have taken a 1-0 lead, then finished with a series-leveling loss, and while Bangladesh will have to improve substantially to push the visitors, Sri Lanka should be wary of allowing their effort to subside.Form guide (last five matches, most recent first)
Bangladesh: LDDWL
Sri Lanka: WLWDW
In the spotlightDilruwan Perera’s best contribution on debut had been his 95 from No. 8, but in Mirpur he showcased an appetite for wickets as well, as he extracted more turn than any other bowler. Sri Lanka require a reliable bowling allrounder to balance their side, and having tasted Test success, Perera will hope to sustain it. A bagful in Hearath’s absence will go some way to ensuring he is picked for the England tour in June.Tamim Iqbal made 6 and 11 in the first Test, and there is pressure on him to score in this game. He doesn’t have three cheap innings on the trot on too many occasions, and will be expected to make a bigger contribution.Pitch and conditionsThe pitch is a typical Chittagong wicket – slow and flat. There will be far less bounce on offer for the faster bowlers, and runs will be available readily. The outfield is a little hard because there was a water shortage for three weeks last month, which affected the ground area. The grass has re-grown but the sandy base has remained.Teams newsMarshall Ayub is ruled out with a wrist injury and has been replaced by Imrul Kayes. The other major news is the dropping of Robiul Islam, which means that Rubel Hossain, who averages 81.23 in 19 Tests, has been retained. These were confirmed when chief selector Faruque Ahmed announced the 12-man team, which means that either of Abdur Razzak or Mahmudullah will make the playing XI.Bangladesh: 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Shamsur Rahman, 3 Imrul Kayes, 4 Mominul Haque, 5 Shakib Al Hasan, 6 Mushfiqur Rahim (capt & wk), 7 Nasir Hossain, 8 Mahmudullah/Abdur Razzak, 9 Sohag Gazi, 10 Rubel Hossain, 11 Al-Amin HossainNuwan Pradeep and Ajantha Mendis are the likeliest replacements for Eranga and Herath. Sri Lanka will almost certainly stay with the same side elsewhere.Sri Lanka (probable): 1 Dimuth Karunaratne, 2 Kaushal Silva, 3 Kumar Sangakkara, 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Dinesh Chandimal (wk), 6 Angelo Mathews (capt), 7 Kithuruwan Vithanage, 8 Dilruwan Perera, 9 Ajantha Mendis, 10 Suranga Lakmal, 11 Nuwan PradeepStats and trivia There have been five centuries at this ground by Bangladesh batsmen, two of which were scored in the last Test here in October. Kumar Sangakkara has passed 50 in his last five innings against BangladeshAngelo Mathews averages 99.60 in his last four TestsQuotes”Senior players like me, Tamim and Shakib have to take up the responsibilty to get the runs.”
“We’re not very worried if Eranga and Herath can’t play tomorrow. We have Nuwan Pradeep who took a lot of wickets in the one Test that he played, in Dubai, so we have some bench strength.”
* February 3 12.00pm GMT This story was updated after it was confirmed that Herath and Eranga will miss the Test

Rawat century leads Railways fightback

Mahesh Rawat and Arindam Ghosh’s unbroken 191-run stand for the sixth wicket helped Railways recover from a slow start, and make 233 for 5 heading into the third day

The Report by Rachna Shetty in Kolkata09-Jan-2014
ScorecardFile photo: Mahesh Rawat’s unbeaten 105 helped Railways recover from a poor start•Fotocorp

Mahesh Rawat and Arindam Ghosh shared an unbroken 191 for the sixth wicket to help Railways make a strong comeback after the side were reeling at 42 for 5 on the second day of their quarter-final clash against Bengal at Eden Gardens. Rawat finished unbeaten on 105, while Arindam Ghosh was batting on 78 not out, as Railways reached 233 for 5 at the close of play. After dismissing Bengal for 317 in the morning session, the Railways innings moved in fits and starts, with a wicket usually following close on the heels of a productive over. It happened to Railways’ opener Amit Paunikar, who struck three fours off Bengal pacer Sourav Sarkar, before a ball from Ashok Dinda sneaked past his defenses to knock over the off stump. It happened once again when Nitin Bhille smacked two fours off Sarkar before Shivakant Shukla, his partner at the other end, was trapped leg before in Shib Paul’s first over of the innings. But the manner in which the first five overs after lunch progressed would have made Bengal and the raucous fans at Eden Gardens confident of a win. Jonathan Rongsen was out for a 15-ball duck when Abhimanyu Easwaran held on to an edge at third slip off Paul. In the next over, Dinda induced an edge from Bhille, and followed that up with the wicket of Karn Sharma. Suddenly, Railways were tottering at 42 for 5.However Rawat counterattacked by hitting Dinda for six successive fours in two overs before settling down to play an innings of consummate ease. In spite of his aggression, Rawat’s innings was chanceless and the ease with which he struck boundaries negated any feelings of dominance that Bengal had.At the other end, Ghosh’s tight technique and calm approach was the perfect foil for Rawat’s attack. While Rawat found batting against Paul a tad tougher than against Dinda, Ghosh played the seamers and spinners with equanimity and an ease that comes with the familiarity of having playing alongside his opponents for many seasons.Ghosh and Rawat have been involved in two hundred-plus stands this season, and they continued in the same vein on Thursday, frustrating Bengal with their version of the good cop, bad cop routine. Rawat reached his sixth fifty of the season with a six over midwicket off Lahiri from 48 balls, and in the third session, Ghosh opened up to execute a few copybook drives around the ground. Ghosh then made the most of a dropped chance by Abhimanyu Easwaran at second slip to bring up his fifty, his glee evident with a joyful leap in the air.Rawat’s century, his third of this season and the ninth of his first-class career, followed soon after as the batsman swept through the 90s with a brace of fours. He reached the landmark with a hard-run single to mid-on, from 117 balls with 17 fours and a six.Bengal captain Laxmi Shukla was effusive in his praise for the two batsmen, but also outlined his focus for the third morning.”Rawat and Arindam batted very well,” Shukla said. “Our attack, Dinda, Sarkar and Maco bowled very well, but the batsmen didn’t give us chance. I think we can make a strong comeback. The wicket is still slow. It is a good pitch but the early morning moisture on the wicket will be important for us.”On the second morning, the moisture in the pitch also brought an early reward for Railways as Ranjitkumar Mali bowled Dinda for 17. The Railways pacers found help early on but Wriddhiman Saha’s stoic innings, and a useful 14 from Paul helped the side reach 317. Saha was bowled by Upadhyay for 87 off 165 balls, with 11 fours and a six.Still, it was a total Bengal would have taken given they were 233 for 8 on the first evening, and if the hosts strike early on, the 84 runs added by the last two wickets may yet prove to be crucial.

One Dhaka Gladiators owner found guilty of corruption

One of the owners of Dhaka Gladiators, Shihab Jishan Chowdury, has been found guilty of “being party to an effort to fix” a match in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2013. Six others, including Kent allrounder Darren Stevens, have been discharged as not guilty by the tribunal investigating alleged corruption in the BPL, but both the ICC and Bangladesh Cricket Board said they were “disappointed” by the outcome and may yet consider an appeal.Mahbubul Alam and Mosharraf Hossain were also found not guilty by the tribunal, as were Salim Chowdhury, the Dhaka Gladiators owner, Gaurav Rawat, CEO of the Gladiators franchise, and Mohammad Rafique, the bowling coach.Bangladesh batsman Mohammad Ashraful had earlier confessed to being involved in corruption in the BPL, as did one other player, who is yet to be named. The quantum of punishment for Shihab, Ashraful and the other player will be pronounced at a later date. The incident of alleged match and spot-fixing came to light in May 2013 when BCB president Nazmul Hassan confirmed that a Bangladesh player had been questioned by the ICC. Ashraful was the first player to admit to being involved in corruption, after which formal charges were laid against nine individuals, including six players from the Dhaka Gladiators franchise. The BCB decided “not to involve” Ashraful in any kind of cricket until investigations into the matter were complete, and appointed a disciplinary panel, from which an anti-corruption tribunal was formed to probe the issue. The tribunal held a preliminary hearing in November last year and the full hearing of the tribunal began in January. The charges against the players were drawn up following an investigation carried out by the ICC’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit. Stevens had been charged for failing to report a corrupt approach during the tournament. Bangladesh cricketers, Mosharraf and Mahbubul had pleaded not guilty against charges of fixing during a preliminary tribunal hearing.Following the tribunal’s ruling, Mosharraf said: “I am absolutely delighted by the verdict. There was a lot of pressure on me, but I feel relieved. Now I will start playing domestic cricket again, try to get a place in the national team. I was never involved in these sort of things, never talked to anyone about this. I just got embroiled. But thanks to the judges, now I can play again.”Stevens said in a statement: “I can assure all of the fans of the Dhaka Gladiators, the people of Bangladesh and all cricket followers, that I have always played the game of cricket honestly, with integrity and to the best of my ability. I have loved playing cricket in Bangladesh, as well as everywhere else in the world and I hope that I will be allowed to continue to play cricket globally.”The ICC, however, said it was “surprised and disappointed” with the outcome of the probe. In a statement issued with the BCB, it said: “The ICC and the BCB have received the determination and are surprised and obviously disappointed with the outcome. Both organisations await the tribunal’s detailed written determination setting out the reasons for the outcome, which will be provided shortly, and will consider it carefully before determining the next steps, including whether to appeal any aspect(s) of the judgment. In the meantime, no further comment will be made by either the ICC or the BCB.”
