Chris Hartley’s sixth first-class century and a strong performance from the Queensland bowlers gave the Bulls the upper hand in the battle for the Sheffield Shield. But at the close of the third day at the Gabba, Ed Cowan was still standing firm for Tasmania and Queensland needed another four wickets before they would know what target they would be chasing in the fourth innings.Tasmania were 101 runs in front at stumps, with Cowan on 59 and Luke Butterworth on 11. Jason Krejza, Brendan Drew and Jackson Bird were the batsmen still to come for Tasmania, who were 6 for 136, and if the Tigers could push their advantage up towards 200 their bowlers would have something to defend in their push for back-to-back titles.Cowan had been cautious but if the fast bowlers dropped short he was especially strong when cutting, and he had struck five boundaries. However, there hadn’t been any top-order support for Cowan as the Queensland fast bowlers reduced the Tigers to 4 for 36 before Tom Triffitt (35) combined with Cowan for a stabilising 51-run stand.Steve Magoffin had angled a ball across Steve Cazzulino, who was caught in the slips for 4, and Nick Kruger was also taken in the cordon for a 12-ball duck off the bowling of Ryan Harris. The big wicket came when the Queensland captain James Hopes brought himself on and struck first ball, nipping a ball back in between bat and pad to bowl Ricky Ponting for 6.The edges kept coming as James Faulkner was caught at slip for 3 off Hopes, before the Cowan-Triffitt stand. Triffitt was bowled by Harris, who was impressive in collecting 2 for 35. The final wicket for the day was the batsman Alex Doolan, who was batting down at No.7 due to a back injury and hooked a catch to fine leg off the bowling of Alister McDermott for 15.The day had started well for Tasmania, when Hopes added only four to his overnight score and was lbw to Jackson Bird for 58. Harris was caught behind off Luke Butterworth for 18 but then came the partnership that could yet prove to be the difference, a 97-run stand between Hartley and Magoffin that took Queensland from a shaky position to well past Tasmania’s total.Hartley’s experience at the Gabba showed as he took few risks but latched on to anything full enough to drive through the off side, and his shots from cover to mid-off were outstanding. He also pulled occasionally and struck the ball down the ground and brought up his century from his 151st delivery with a pull for four off Krejza.It was Hartley’s first Shield hundred in two seasons and it came at the perfect time, as the Bulls aim to improve their conversion rate having made six of the past nine Shield finals for just one title. Hartley had excellent support from Magoffin, who didn’t throw his wicket away and made a valuable 31 from 74 balls before he edged behind off Butterworth, who finished with 4 for 54.Bird collected 4 for 56 as he had Cameron Boyce caught behind for a duck and then ended the innings with the wicket of Hartley, who on 111 left a ball that swung back into him and was trapped in front. It was the end of a fine innings, and one that could be the difference in a challenging match for the batsmen.

وأردف: “الآن سيكون من الصعب الفوز بلقب هذا الموسم، يبدو مستحيلاً، سنحتاج إلى معجزة حقًا، لذلك هناك نوع مختلف من التحفيز ومن الصعب تعديله، لقد رسمنا خطًا ونعلم أن المراكز الأربعة الأولى هي كل شيء نسعى له الآن”.

Nick Compton has been rewarded for his prolific start to the season with a recall to the Lions side. Compton has not been involved in the England set-up since early 2007 but, after 685 first-class runs and three centuries in the first few weeks of the 2012 season, he has forced his way back into contention.While Compton might not be the most eye-catching batsman on the county circuit, he has a sound defensive technique, leaves the ball well and has the patience to play long innings. Such qualities are not common among developing top-order batsmen and have provided Compton, who is 29 in June, with a chance to follow his grandfather Denis into the England Test team.Compton is one of a 12-man squad named to face West Indies in a four-day fixture at Northampton commencing Thursday May 10. The squad will be captained by James Taylor, 22, who moved to Nottinghamshire from Leicestershire over the winter, and also includes Samit Patel and nine of the squad that toured Bangladesh or Sri Lanka with England Lions over the winter.The only player in the squad uncapped at Lions level is Kent allrounder Matt Coles, who spent the winter on the Potential England Performance Programme in Loughborough and Chennai before being added to the Lions squad for the final stages of their Sri Lanka tour. With 21 first-class wickets already, Coles is currently the second-highest wicket-taker in the 2012 first-class season. He also recently made his maiden first-class century, an unbeaten 103 against Yorkshire.There is also a recall for Michael Carberry. At 31 years of age, Carberry is relatively old by comparison with recent Lions selections. Back to health and fitness following a blood clot on his lung, he is still seen as a viable alternative for an opening position should injury strike Andrew Strauss or Alastair Cook and could yet add to the odd Test cap he earned in March 2010.Northamptonshire’s Jack Brooks, 27, is also included in a squad that marks an attempt from the selectors to balance a desire to see the best young players with a view to long-term selection, with a need to ensure there are suitable replacements available should injury strike in the shorter term.England Lions squad

The absence of Graeme Onions and Ravi Bopara from the squad, both of whom have been in fine early season form, is a firm indication that the pair are in contention for a place in the 13-man Test squad to take on West Indies on May 17.There is also no place in the Lions squad for Steven Davies – Jonny Bairstow will keep wicket – Varun Chopra or Luke Wells, with Joe Root winning the top-order selection battle.Geoff Miller, the national selector, said: “Many of the players included in this squad have worked hard on our overseas tours and training camps over the winter or have shown good early season form. West Indies will no doubt be challenging opposition and this fixture will present an opportunity for players to show that they are capable of taking the next step and representing England at Test level in the future.”While the absence of Chopra may fuel suggestions that Ashely Giles, the England selector and Warwickshire director of cricket, has used his influence to ensure his county side are not weakened, it is worth noting that Warwickshire do not have a game during the Lions fixture.

ESPNcricinfo staff10-May-2012Hampshire have registered Bilal Shafayat, the former Nottinghamshire batsman, on a short-term deal as they seek to cover the absence of Michael Carberry and Jimmy Adams.Shafayat, who was released by Nottinghamshire in 2010, has been a part of Hampshire’s second XI set-up for the last two seasons, making a double-hundred against Glamorgan and a century against Middlesex in 2011 and 39* then 77 against Essex last week at West End.It means Shafayat, who represented England at Under-19s level in 2001, will be available on a match-by-match basis for selection for the first XI should he be required, although he has no formal contract. He has been added to the squad for the Championship match against Derbyshire.Hampshire’s manager, Giles White, said; “Bilal will provide back-up for our batting line-up over the next few games. Having missed Jimmy Adams and Michael Carberry for different reasons in the last few matches we thought it wise to have some additional strength in depth in case of any further losses.”Bilal has proven a very able cricketer in our second XI as well as for Nottinghamshire so I’m sure he’ll be able to step into the side should he be required.”

Usman has been a part of the Pakistan Under-19 set-up since 2009. During the team’s tour of South Africa in January, which included a triangular tournament and a bilateral series, Usman picked up 15 wickets from 10 matches at an average of 23.80.The side will be led by the 17-year old batsman Babar Azam who recently played as part of the PCB Blues team in Twenty20 practise matches for Pakistan’s top-rung players. He also scored 265 runs, with two half-centuries and a hundred from five matches, in this year’s Faysal Bank One Day National Cup.Left-arm fast bowler Zia-ul-Haq, who represents Pakistan International Airlines, has also been included in the squad along with opening batsman Faraz Ali. Most of the players that won the three-match youth ODI series against South Africa have been retained, including wicket-keeper Salman Afridi, who had replaced Saifullah Bangash.Pakistan will play India in the opening game of the U-19 Asia Cup on June 24. The other participating teams include Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Nepal, Malaysia and Qatar. The tournament will be a precursor to the U-19 World Cup in Australia during August.
