Big PictureNot for the first time the first first-class game of the Indian domestic season will be reduced to a sideshow. Last year, the Irani Cup clashed with Australia’s two-Test series in India, and this time it will fight a losing battle with the four-day game’s ultimate foe, Twenty20 cricket. It’s not so much a battle for hearts and minds of most of Indian cricket fans – that appears to have been settled – but one for putting the best team available on the field.

Many who would presumably have found a place in the Rest of India squad for the Irani Cup are representing their IPL franchises in the Champions League Twenty20. Those yet to prove a point in Test cricket, Suresh Raina and Virat Kohli for example, are unavailable, and so are those who could have a Test future – R Ashwin and S Badrinath.Fans are not the only ones neglecting the start of the first-class season. The Irani Cup could have done without the selection fiasco that raised questions about the selectors’ professionalism and their communication with state associations vis-à-vis the availability of players. At a time when Indian domestic cricket is struggling to stay relevant to the needs of upcoming cricketers in the wake of other, more lucrative, options, the selection blunders and the scheduling are all the more concerning.For many players with an eye on India’s international assignments in the months to come, this is the first opportunity to attract attention. Seven members of Rest of India are part of India’s ODI squad against England, and will also be keen to stake their claim for the home series against West Indies in November.Ajinkya Rahane impressed in the limited-overs games in England, and his selection owed much to his prolific run in the previous domestic season, during which he averaged 87 in the Ranji Trophy. He’s part of a strong squad with an attacking batting line-up – Manish Pandey was the fourth-highest run-getter in 2010-11, the captain Parthiv Patel is back in the Indian squad and opener Shikhar Dhawan will want to make a return to the national side.The bowlers will be under greater scrutiny. Many would have liked to have a look at the Jharkhand seamer Varun Aaron during the ODIs in England, and he is likely to share the new ball with Umesh Yadav, who had a satisfactory tour with India Emerging Players to Australia and is in the ODI squad against England. Rahul Sharma, the legspinner, shone in this year’s IPL and won a national call-up, and joins the race for the regular spinner’s spot in the absence of Harbhajan Singh.Rest of India’s opponents, Rajasthan, made history by winning the Ranji Trophy for the first time but had problems in the build-up to this match. Pankaj Singh and Deepak Chahar, the seamers who took 20 wickets in three Super League games and 63 in the Plate League, have suffered injuries. Pankaj is out – he was replaced by Aniket Choudhary – while Chahar reportedly split the webbing of his palm, but may play. Vacancies may fill up with the return of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir, but he won’t want to waste time getting into the groove should an opportunity arise.Ashok Menaria led India in the 2010 Under-19 World Cup, and after recovering from injury was elected by Rajasthan for the Ranji Trophy quarter-finals last season. He answered their call with centuries in each knockout game. He has had a run in the IPL, cracked 112 in a high-scoring game in the Emerging Players Tournament, and also bowls left-arm spin. Against a formidable Rest of India line-up, much may depend on how Menaria delivers for Rajasthan.Pitch and conditionsThe track at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur reportedly has some grass on it, and Parthiv didn’t mind that. “We have three very good medium-pacers in side in Varun Aaron, Umesh Yadav and R Vinay Kumar. A tendência se manteve antes e depois da semifinal do Paulistão. O Fluminense vive uma campanha quase perfeita na Taça BH Sub-17. A “geração de ouro” que disputa a Taça BH Sub-17 é considerada por muitos como a mais promissora entre as que estão sendo desenvolvidas em Xerém. Os números no torneio não colocam a expectativa abaixo: a equipe está com 100% de aproveitamento e vem de duas goleadas na fase de mata-mata.

Entre os principais destaques do torneio, os atacantes Marcos Paulo e João Pedro lideram o quesito com quatro gols cada. Mas apesar do ataque estar vivendo grande fase, a defesa também chama atenção: foram apenas dois gols sofridos no torneio, o que coloca o Tricolor como a melhor defesa entre as equipes que estão classificadas para a semifinal.

Toda máquina precisa de engrenagens para funcionar. O caminho entre defesa e ataque passa pelo meio de campo e dois personagens despontam como pilares da equipes: a dupla de volantes. A FORÇA DO CRUZ-MALTINO

O Vasco também apresenta uma de suas melhores gerações da categoria. Em todos os setores, mostra força e jogadores promissores. A chegada às semifinais já é a melhor campanha da equipe desde que a Taça BH mudou para a categoria sub-17. Com três vitórias e dois empates, o time chega embalado depois de garantir a classificação nos pênaltis contra o forte Internacional.

Além de peças promissoras no setor ofensivo, o time de Celso Martins conta com um trunfo debaixo das traves: Lucão, de 1,90m e 17 anos. O goleiro foi responsável por defender duas cobranças nas quartas e boa atuação durante a partida. Mas, além da eficiência na posição, se sobressai por conta da liderança e experiência – conquistada nas Seleções de base – dentro de campo.

– Tudo que você faz dentro do campo começa nos treinamentos. Pude ajudar a equipe nos pênaltis. Quando você vira capitão muito cedo, tem uma responsabilidade gigante. Sempre falo com os meninos: ‘qualquer coisa, podem recorrer a mim’. Estarei ali sempre para ajudar, passando confiança e tranquilidade, procuro sempre ficar calmo. – Por mim, jogaria futsal para sempre, acho muito legal. Minhas balançadas e pisadas na bola, aprendi no salão. Dou um jeito de usar isso no campo e acho que esse meu perfil pode ajudar muito o Vasco no futuro. Meu sonho é honrar essa camisa e, um dia, chegar ao profissional – afirma Nathan ao LANCE!.

No setor ofensivo, o Vasco ainda conta com atletas promissores como o atacante Talles Magno, e os meia Vinícius e Brendon – este, recém-chegado do Palmeiras e com passagens por Seleções de base. Autor do golaço contra o Internacional na última partida, Vinícius, destro, comenta a batida de perna esquerda e mantém pés no chão para o clássico.

– Me inspirei no Felipe (ídolo do Vasco) naquele chute. Sempre tem algo para acrescentar, mas estamos no melhor caminho. Estamos motivados e queremos seguir fazendo a nossa parte. Bate uma ansiedade para chegar na decisão, mas não podemos tirar os pés do chão – afirma o camisa 7.

RIVALIDADE SÓ DENTRO DE CAMPO

Quem acompanhou o Carioca sub-20sabe bem que o clássico pegou fogo dentro e fora de campo. Nas Laranjeiras e em São Januário, brigas entre atletas e torcidas. Clima bem diferente do momento vivido pelos garotos em Belo Horizonte. Antes da decisão, as delegações almoçaram juntas na cidade.

– O que acontece nas quatro linhas, tem que ficar nas quatro linhas. Que vença o melhor, o mais competente, mas sem nada que possa aflorar brigas fora de campo – afirma Celso Martins, técnico do Vasco.

– Como duas equipes do Rio classificaram-se, a ideia é mostrar que o futebol é muito mais do que um jogo. É uma ferramenta de socialização. É um momento que os dois clubes querem a classificação, mas todos são profissionais. Os rivais não são inimigos, são colegas de profissão, de sonho – ressalta Eduardo Oliveira, técnico do Fluminense.

The Sydney Cricket Ground’s venerable MA Noble, Bradman and Messenger stands will be demolished and replaced by a vast new $186 million construction in time for the ground’s next Ashes Test in January 2014. On the occasion of the ground’s 100th Test, the SCG Trust chairman Rodney Cavalier announced the redevelopment, which is being funded with the help of the federal and state governments.”The new stands are another moment in the ground’s evolution,” Cavalier said. “The design instructions made it expressly clear that, when the work is completed, the stands will look like they have always belonged inside one of the world’s greatest cricket grounds. Just as the Victor Trumper Stand fits in so beautifully.”The Noble, Bradman and Messenger stands no longer meet the requirements of the modern day spectator. Their useful life is fast drawing to a close. Sightlines are obstructed by roof supporting pylons. The on-going costs of maintaining the existing stands continue to increase year on year. Additions, renovations and other upgrades have not greatly improved the viewing environment, access and egress for spectators, particularly the elderly and the disabled.”Built in 1936, 1973 and 1984 respectively, the three stands have dominated the northern end of the ground, but will make way for a complex that will increase the ground’s capacity to about 48,000 and update amenities for spectators, as well as broadcasters and media, currently housed in the Noble/Bradman stands.Sydney’s marriage of old and new will be maintained by the retention of the Members Pavillion and the Ladies Stand, to the west of the new complex.
