The English domestic season will again be launched in the Middle East next year with the Champion County, Nottinghamshire, taking on MCC in Abu Dhabi with the possibility of using the fixture for further trails of coloured cricket balls. The match will take place from March 27 to 30 at the Zayed International Cricket Stadium which hosted the match between Durham and MCC in 2010. That match was a day/night encounter using pink balls as MCC took the opportunity to explore the possibility of floodlit first-class cricket. No decision has yet been taken on the exact nature of the 2011 match, but it could include the use of a new white ball and players using a variance of coloured clothing. These details will be discussed at an MCC cricket committee meeting in Perth before the third Ashes Test later this month. An MCC spokesman told ESPNcricinfo that they are keen to work closely with the ECB and ICC to make the most of the fixture.John Stephenson, the MCC head of cricket, hopes to build on last year’s success. “It is an excellent ground for competitive first-class cricket and, played in good weather, will be ideal preparation for the players ahead of an English season. The fixture also provides a perfect platform for us to use as valuable research and development for the world game.”MCC believes they made positive strides with the pink ball although reviews from those who took part in the match were mixed with concerns raised about the seam. However, Michael Di Venuto and Kyle Coetzer didn’t appear to have many problems as they both hit hundreds to set up Durham’s 311-run victory.MCC also confirmed that Lord’s had successfully bid to host the CB40 final at the end of the 2011 season. The match will be played on September 17 and will be a traditional daytime encounter rather than the floodlit final between Somerset and Warwickshire last season. That game attracted criticism for making it difficult for fans to attend because of problems getting home and also because of the cooler evening weather in September.

Shakib Al Hasan, the Bangladesh captain, has praised the way his team bounced back after losing the opening ODI of their five-match series against Zimbabwe. The home side won the final ODI in Chittagong by six wickets, led by Tamim Iqbal’s aggressive 95, which included seven sixes, to take the series 3-1, with one game washed out.”We came back really hard at them, played really good cricket,” Shakib said. The Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium is among the venues for the World Cup, and Shakib was happy with the way the pitch played. “The track played really well though the outfield was slow. There was some spin later on but the batsmen handled it really well.”Along with Tamim, who recently returned from injury, Junaid Siddique was also among the runs, scoring a half-century. The improvement in the performance of the top order, Shakib said, was a satisfying development. “Our top order hasn’t been scoring runs, today they did and I’m happy about that. Our fast bowlers have bowled well in the last couple of games and the fielding has been good. Though we have dropped some catches, our body language has been good.”Bangladesh have now won two consecutive ODI series – the first being the 4-0 whitewash of New Zealand – and are faring well in their preparation of the World Cup. This year began on a poor note for them, with 14 straight losses, before a maiden ODI over England triggered a change in fortune. They take on Canada and Pakistan, in Chittagong and Mirpur respectively – days prior to their first World Cup game, against India on February 19.

Robin Singh will be getting a fresh taste of cricket in the USA when he arrives this weekend to coach the USA Under-19 team at the ICC Americas U-19 Division One tournament in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The former Indian fielding coach is hoping to apply his expertise to help raise the country’s standard of cricket, beginning at the junior level.”I’m really excited to get involved with US cricket,” Singh said when reached by telephone in India. “I used to work at doing a lot of development and coaching in Hong Kong and even though the USA is much bigger, I’m familiar with the challenges faced by an Associate country.”Singh was approached by USACA for the position, and while he is only contracted through this tournament, there is the possibility that both sides may work out a deal to keep him involved long term which may also mean taking over the senior team coaching duties as well. One of the major things that Singh hopes to focus on is improving the fitness of the players. However, he acknowledges that he’ll need more time in the future to work with the players in order to get the best results.”I don’t really know too much about the team yet,” he said. “There aren’t too many stats available, but I’ve gotten some information and am hoping to get to know the players as much as possible during the week to get the best out of them.”USA participated in the 2010 U-19 World Cup and will be hoping to make it back for the 2012 edition. Four players in the current squad were part of the team that went to New Zealand for last year’s main event including Salman Ahmad, Hammad Shahid, vice-captain Steven Taylor and captain Abhijit Joshi. USA begins tournament play on February 7 against Argentina.

Slow-start story 'laughable' – Haddin

Brad Haddin, the Australian opener, has rubbished reports that the ICC’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit were looking into Australia’s slow start in their Group A match against Zimbabwe

Brad Haddin, the Australian opener, has rubbished reports that the ICC’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) were looking into Australia’s slow start in their Group A match against Zimbabwe in Ahmedabad.”It’s quite a laughable story. It’s a joke,” Haddin told reporters during a net session at the SSC in Colombo. “We just got off the mark a bit slowly.”Haddin and Shane Watson, the Australian openers, scored five runs in the first two overs and only 28 in the first ten. Australia eventually went on to score 262 for 6, after which their bowlers secured a 91-run victory. The story, which was reported by , was also criticised by Australian team manager Steve Bernard, who said that “it was the silliest thing I’ve heard this week – and I’ve heard a lot of silly things since I’ve been here”.”I’ve just heard the story a moment ago and I’m not sure how to respond, except to say it would make a cat laugh. It’s the most ludicrous thing I’ve ever heard in my life that a side can be 0-5 after two overs and that that’s suspicious.”The ICC said it did not comment on any ACSU matter, including whether or not a match had been investigated. In the last few years however, with the advent of spread betting, the ACSU has been on high alert to keep an eye on unusual scoring patterns. Since the spot-fixing scandal, they have been keeping tabs by monitoring a large number of matches.

Australia eager for action after washout

As Australia head towards the business end of the tournament, Ricky Ponting said it was “not ideal” preparation, and his batsmen will be keen for some time at the crease when they take on Kenya and Canada

Australia’s batsmen will enter next Sunday’s match against Kenya having not had an innings for 15 days, after their wash-out in Colombo on Saturday. And as they head towards the business end of the tournament, Ricky Ponting said it was “not ideal” preparation, and his batsmen will be keen for some time at the crease when they take on Kenya and Canada in Bangalore. The rain pelted down after 32.5 overs of Sri Lanka’s innings on Saturday, denying the Australians a chance to chase what would have been a challenging total. And because of the comfortable victory over New Zealand in Nagpur a week earlier, several men will have had nothing but net practice since their tournament opener against Zimbabwe in Ahmedabad on February 21.”It’s not ideal, but we’ve known that was a chance to happen right the way through, before the tournament even started,” Ponting said. “If you look a bit deeper than that, some of our middle-order players haven’t even got much exposure in the first couple of games either.”We’ll have to think about what’s going to be the right thing for us to do as far as our team composition and where we bat guys and how we use the bowlers in the two games coming up. I don’t want to be tinkering with things too much and changing things around too much, but after a game like today where you’re 30 overs in and it’s washed out, it just makes us think that little bit more about it.”That might mean a chance up the order for David Hussey, who has faced only eight balls in the World Cup, or Steven Smith, who has spent only four deliveries at the crease. Adding to the squeeze is Michael Hussey, who’s been called up as the injured Doug Bollinger’s replacement.Although the washout is unlikely to hurt Australia considerably, it was less than ideal for the Sri Lankans, who now have only five points from four matches. If Australia win as expected against Kenya and Canada, it will extend their unbeaten run in World Cup matches to 34, and it could mean their final pool match against Pakistan is a battle to finish on top of Group A.”We want to win every game we play, it’s as simple as that,” Ponting said. “We won’t be talking about anything else. We’ve got two of the lesser lights, the minnow teams coming up in the next week, so hopefully we can get the results we require out of those games and then we know we’ve got to come back here and play what looks to be a very good Pakistan side.”
