Newcastle: Dean Jones makes Matt Targett claim

A major Newcastle United update has emerged on Matt Targett and his future at St. James’ Park.

What’s the talk?

Transfer insider Dean Jones has revealed that Eddie Howe has made a decision on whether or not he wants to keep the left-back at the club beyond the end of his loan spell.

90Min recently reported that the Toon have an agreement in place with Aston Villa to sign him permanently for £15m, whilst Leicester, Wolves and Leeds are also keen on his services.

The head coach has now given the green light for PIF to complete this deal. Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “Newcastle were always open-minded about it. They weren’t sure whether they would want him long-term or not.

“From what I’m told, Eddie Howe has now decided, along with the recruitment team, that this is a good addition to this team.”

Supporters will be buzzing

The Newcastle supporters will surely be buzzing with this news as Targett will be an excellent addition to the squad ahead of next season.

Left-back was a problem position for the club in the first-half of the campaign as Matt Ritchie struggled badly in the back four. The Scot averaged a dismal WhoScored rating of 6.42 across 14 starts in the division as he failed to prove that he is a reliable option to call upon at this point in his career.

It was an area that PIF had to address in the January transfer window and they opted to bring Targett in on loan from fellow top-flight side Aston Villa. Since coming through the door, he has started 12 matches and averaged a superb WhoScored rating of 6.99.

Ritchie has averaged 2.0 tackles and interceptions per game this term and his English teammate has proven himself to be a major upgrade with 3.9 per match. The ex-Southampton defender has performed to a higher standard than the former Cherries winger and been more active defensively, helping to build a solid base at the back for the likes of Allan Saint-Maximin and Bruno Guimaraes to work their magic in the final third.

This shows that Targett has made an instant impact at St. James’ Park since joining on loan and that is why the fans will be keen to see him sign on a permanent basis. Therefore, they will be buzzing with Howe’s decision to push for the £15m agreement to be completed as the full-back will be able to kick on again next season and continue to prove that he is a solid option at Premier League level.

Rohit slams double-century as Mumbai dominate

A round-up of the second day of the second round of matches in the Super League of the Ranji Trophy

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Nov-2010Group AR Ashwin was in his element on the second day•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Rohit Sharma may have been demoted in the BCCI contracts lists that were announced today, but he hit back, pounding his third first-class double-century as Mumbai bossed over Bengal at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Resuming at 287 for 4, Mumbai suffered early setbacks when Abhishek Nayar and Ajit Agarkar fell within the first eight overs of play. Rohit was in no mood to relent though, and found a willing partner in No. 8 Iqbal Abdulla to take the game away from the hosts. Abdulla fell 18 short of his second first-class ton, after swinging 12 fours in an aggressive effort. Rohit had looked ominous in his brief stay on the first evening and carried on in the same vein, stroking 23 fours and three sixes to push Mumbai towards 600. Butter-fingered Bengal let themselves down in the field, with Shreevats Goswami, Wriddhiman Saha and Ashok Dinda dropping easy catches off Rohit. Ramesh Powar and Dhawal Kulkarni chipped in to help Rohit reach 200 at which point Wasim Jaffer declared. There was more trouble for Bengal before stumps, with Aavishkar Salvi removing opener Arindam Das cheaply, leaving them facing a mountain on day three.Form Guide – Tracking ESPNcricinfo’s players to watch this season

R Ashwin: Came into his own on the second day, running through Delhi with his ninth first-class five-for

Rohit Sharma: Made the most of three dropped chances and scored a fluent double-ton

Virat Kohli: Could not convert his century into a mammoth effort and his untimely exit gave TN an opening

Piyush Chawla: Scored a sparkling 79, but the real challenge will come when he bowls tomorrow

Ravindra Jadeja: Failed with the bat in the first innings, but will hope to make it up with the ball

Jaidev Unadkat: Made an instant impact before stumps and will want to make further dents on the third day

Abhinav Mukund: His cheap dismissal heralded a top-order collapse for TN

Delhi ran into an inspired spell of offspin from R Ashwin to stumble from a position of strength, before their bowlers wrested back the initiative against Tamil Nadu on an intriguing day of cricket at the at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The slide began early, with centurion Virat Kohli driving Ashwin straight to midwicket after adding 20 to his overnight 119. His exit gave TN an opening and Ashwin pushed through with purpose, registering his ninth five-wicket haul at the first-class level, as Delhi lost 7 for 23 to fold up for 318. The hosts held the upper hand when they came out to bat, but they had to contend with Delhi’s fired-up attack. Pawan Suyal removed Abhinav Mukund cheaply and, despite holding firm for a 45-run stand, neither Srikkanth Anirudha nor Arun Karthik could kick-start TN’s reply. Dinesh Karthik and R Satish fared even worse as left-arm spinner Vikas Mishra got into the groove, reducing the home side to 82 for 5. Delhi bowled to a plan, with Suyal and Parvinder Awana bowled fast early on and used the short ball to good effect before Mishra dried up the runs with a good line and length and forced the batsmen into mistakes. S Badrinath responded with a mix of caution and aggression, striking two sixes and three fours in his unbeaten 45 off 127 balls, to take his side to stumps without further loss.Assam got themselves back into their match at the Karnail Singh Stadium in Delhi, reducing Railways to 164 for 8 by stumps on the second day. Resuming their innings at 174 for 7, Assam added only 13 more runs in the hazy morning before being bowled out. Dhiraj Goswami, the fast bowler, then struck twice in his opening spell as Railways stuttered to 33 for 4. TP Singh scored 41, but Assam continued to take wickets at regular intervals and it took a 30-run eighth-wicket partnership between allrounder JP Yadav and left-arm spinner Murali Kartik to get Railways close to Assam’s score. While it was the spinners who had taken the bulk of the wickets for Railways, the seamers did the damage for Assam, with Goswami taking 4 for 43 and Ranjitkumar Mali finishing with 2 for 31. Railways will start day three 23 runs behind in a match that looks destined for a result.Gujarat seamer Ishwar Choudhary picked up four wickets as Saurashtra folded up for 262 in their first innings at the Lalabhai Contractor Stadium in Surat. Rains stayed away after washing out the opening day, and Gujarat dominated from the outset after choosing to field. Opener Bhushan Chauhan resisted with a doughty 41, but regular strikes at the other end reduced the visitors to 104 for 4. Captain Jaydev Shah counterattacked, hitting three sixes and eleven fours in his 94, and repaired the innings in a 119-run stand for the fifth wicket, with Sagar Jogiyani. The lower order, however, could not contribute much and Gujarat wrapped up the innings with six overs to stumps. Seamer Jaidev Unadkat made a breakthrough in the final passage of play, leaving Gujarat at 20 for 1 and the game evenly poised going into the third day.Group BRobin Uthappa celebrated his 25th birthday by marching to his 11th first-class ton as Karnataka seized the first-innings lead against Punjab at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali. The visitors finished the day at 346 for 6, 103 runs ahead of Punjab who were bowled out on the opening day. It was a tough day for the home bowlers after the early hope fuelled by the cheap dismissals of Karnataka’s openers. Ganesh Satish blunted the attack with a half-century and added 130 runs for the third wicket with Uthappa as Karnataka assumed control of proceedings. Uthappa was in his usual attacking mindset, caning 16 fours and two sixes in his 149 that came off 182 balls. After Satish was run out, Manish Pandey joined in the fun, scoring 49 off 61 balls. After conceding the lead, Punjab managed to pull things back marginally with three late wickets, but Karnataka held all the aces going into the third day.Yusuf Pathan piled up the misery on Haryana with a typically brutal 195 off 138 balls as Baroda took a 343-run first-innings lead at the Bansi Lal Cricket Stadium in Rohtak. Haryana had been bowled out for 127 on day one and had an equally disastrous start to the second day, with Yusuf and opener Connor Williams (114 off 316) adding another 192 to their overnight stand of 87. Haryana captain Rahul Dewan was forced to use nine different bowlers before eventually dismissing Baroda for 470. Yusuf bashed nineteen fours and ten sixes, before he was bowled by part-timer Nitin Saini, five short of his second first-class double century. Thanks to Yusuf, Baroda maintained an innings run-rate of 4.12, giving them ample time to push for a win.Parvinder Singh and Piyush Chawla scored contrasting half-centuries for Uttar Pradesh as they reached 403 in their first innings against Orissa at the Dr Akhilesh Das Stadium in Lucknow. While Chawla scored at a strike-rate of more than 70, middle-order batsman Singh took 206 balls for his 78. It was slow progress for UP who only marginally improved on their slow first-day run-rate, getting 229 runs at 2.65 on day two. Orissa were left with just one over to face, which they negotiated safely.

Aguirre chega ao Rio e cogita usar a 13 do Bota: 'Seria lindo'

MatériaMais Notícias

Ele chegou.

Haryana pip Services on net run-rate

A round-up of the eleventh day of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Twenty20 tournament

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Oct-2010North ZoneHarshad Khadiwale’s aggressive half-century took Maharashtra to the knock-outs with a five-run win against Baroda•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Delhi crushed Services’ hopes of qualifying for the knock-out stage with an easy nine-wicket victory at the Palam B Ground. Delhi overhauled Services’ score of 124 with 18 balls to spare, leaving them tied on points with Haryana, but behind on net run-rate in the North Zone table.Medium-pacer Kapil Yadav took 3 for 18 for Delhi, while opener Irfan Khan was the only Services’ batsman to get going, with a score of 46 off 39 balls. The rest of Delhi’s attack supported Yadav well as Services finished with a below-par score. Opener Puneet Bisht set the tone for Delhi’s chase with 24 off 16 balls, and after his exit Chetan Sharma settled down to finish unbeaten on 65. Mithun Manhas stayed with Sharma as Delhi eased home by nine wickets, giving them a spotless record going into the next round.Haryana qualified past the group stage despite a nine-wicket loss to Himachal Pradesh in their final group match at the Palam A Ground. Choosing to bat, Haryana stumbled to 14 for 4 in the fifth over before a lower-order recovery took the score into triple figures. Left-arm spinner Kuldeep Diwan finished with 3 for 25, while Ashok Thakur supported him with 2 for 19, leaving Himachal chasing 109 for a win.Sangram Singh scored 58 of 57 balls, and his 92-run opening stand with Manvinder Bisla put the result beyond doubt, but Haryana managed to qualify for the next round on net run-rate courtesy of Delhi beating Services by a similar margin. Himachal finished fourth in the North Zone table.Punjab beat Jammu & Kashmir by 29 runs in the battle of the North Zone also-rans, at the Palam A Ground in Delhi. Punjab chose to bat and were sent on their way by a 40-run opening stand off 4.2 overs between Jaskaran Singh and Sarul Kanwar. Ravi Inder Singh, Amit Parashar and Bipul Sharma ensured that the momentum was maintained as Punjab surged to a strong score. Abid Nabi suffered the most, conceding 40 runs in his four overs as J&K faced a chase of 141.Opener Arshad Bhatt held one end up with a steady 43, but the steady loss of wickets at the other end meant that J&K gradually lost steam. Seamer Manpreet Gony finished with 3 for 17 as Punjab closed the J&K innings at 111 for 6.West ZoneBaroda frittered away a dominant position against Maharashtra and the chance to make the knock-out stage at the Reliance Stadium in Vadodara, falling short of the target of 153 by five runs, after being 99 for 1 at one stage. Pinal Shah’s half-century got Baroda off to a strong start, and they needed 54 off 53 deliveries with nine wickets remaining. However, offspinner Ganesh Gaikwad ran through the middle order, taking 4 for 28, including the wicket of Pinal for 61. With 12 needed off the last over, Baroda lost two wickets to finish at 147 for 7.Openers Harshad Khadiwale and Nikhil Paradkar had smashed 109 in 71 balls to give Maharashtra a solid platform. Khadiwale was the more aggressive of the duo, slamming 59 off 34 balls while Paradkar made 49 off 40. But Baroda’s spinners picked up six wickets as Maharashtra’s middle order collapsed to 131 for 7. They recovered somewhat to post 152, which proved just enough to take them through.Left-arm seamer Jaidev Unadkat’s incisive three-wicket burst gave Saurashtra a three-run win in a low-scoring scrap against Gujarat in Vadodara. Defending a paltry 89 on a pitch where run-scoring was not easy, Saurashtra’s fast-bowling attack, led by Unadkat, struck at regular intervals to reduce Gujarat to 56 for 5. A watchful 18-run stand between Rujul Bhatt and Rohit Dahiya brought Gujarat back in the game, but Unadkat removed both off successive balls before a spate of run-outs left the hosts three short.Siddharth Trivedi was the main threat when Saurashtra batted, as he picked two of three early wickets that left the visitors gasping at 3 for 3. Shitanshu Kotak and Jaydev Shah then featured in the best partnership of the game, but Saurasthra stumbled again following their 41-run alliance. No. 8 Sandip Maniar’s late onslaught lifted them from 64 for 8 to their final score of 89, which in the end analysis proved just enough for Saurashtra’s first win in the tournament, while Gujarat finished their engagements winless.Central ZoneMadhya Pradesh surged into the top spot of Central Zone with a hard-fought nine-run win against Railways who were bowled out with one over to spare in Jaipur. Needing a win to progress to the knock-out stage, MP began well with Naman Ojha anchoring their innings with a boundary-filled 49 off 38 balls. Sanjay Bangar slowed down proceedings in the middle overs with a tight spell of 3 for 22, but Amarjeet Singh went on the attack in the end overs, smashing five fours and two sixes in his 37 off 15 balls.Railways’ chase was derailed early as opening bowlers TP Sudhindra and Anand Rajan reduced them to 40 for 6 in seven overs. However, a late counterattack led by tail-enders DP Salvi, Shadab Khan and Murali Kartik brought them roaring back into the game. Kartik and Shadab lifted the score from 81 for 8 in the 13th over to 139 in the 19th. With 10 needed from eight balls, Kartik was run-out before Amarjeet, who had bled 40 runs in his first 3.5 overs, finished the game by castling Shadab with his last ball.Amit Paunikar’s unbeaten half-century took Vidarbha to the knock-outs with a 34-run win against Rajasthan at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. Paunikar didn’t let the loss of two wickets in the first two overs bother him, and added 65 runs in 43 deliveries with Ravi Jangid. After Jangid fell for a quick 36, Paunikar carried on, hitting three sixes and six fours in his unbeaten 78 off 56. Vidarbha surged to 169 as 36 runs came off the last three overs.Rajasthan began well, with Dishant Yagnik hammering three sixes in his 36 off 22 balls to lift the score to 49 in the sixth over. Aakash Chopra’s steady 42 kept them in the chase, taking them to 110 for 2 with six overs to go. However, offspinner Akshay Wakhare took two wickets in three balls to stem the scoring, and also effected two run-outs to turn the tables. Rajasthan managed only 25 runs off the last six overs as Vidharbha completed their third win in four group games.

Aston Villa: Media blown away by Iroegbunam

Aston Villa midfielder Tim Iroegbunam was at the centre of huge praise from the media for his display against Norwich City this afternoon.

The Lowdown: Villa cruise…

Steven Gerrard’s side cruised to a 2-0 victory at home to the Canaries with goals from Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings in either half cementing all three points.

Villa’s first win in six games was the perfect response to an otherwise regrettable recent run as Gerrard and co get back on track and look to finish 2021/2022 on a positive note.

One huge positive from today was the assured and noteworthy full Premier League debut for young midfielder Iroegbunam.

The Latest: Media rave…

The 18-year-old, on his first full English top flight start, seriously impressed a few journalists during the win over Norwich today.

Lauded for playing in defensive midfield with ‘aplomb’, it seems as if Gerrard and Villa may have a ‘proper talent’ on their hands.

Here’s how the media reacted:

“Big positive from the first 45 was Tim Iroegbunam. Grew into the game and showed great awareness. Just 18 and playing DM with aplomb in the Premier League. Looks a proper talent.” – Mark Samuels, as seen on The Guardian.

“Tim Iroegbunam comes off. A great debut for the 18-year-old, especially off the ball. Step by step, baby.” – Luis Miguel Echegaray, Que Golazo Podcast, CBS Sports.

“Standing ovation for Tim Iroegbunam as he is replaced by Douglas Luiz. A bright performance from the 18-year-old.” Gregg Evans, The Athletic.

The Verdict: Bright future…At just 18, the talented homegrown ace certainly proved his worth on his first full league start.According to SofaScore, Iroegbunam won a brilliant 4/6 duels in total – proving to hold his own as an anchor in front of the back four – and even managed a higher match rating than first team captain Tyrone Mings. If the starlet continues in this vain, Gerrard may have a real prospect on his hands.

Gostei bastante do curso, aprendi coisas importantes.

– A turmame recebeu super bem.

– Muita coisa me agradou no Jornalismo.

OGrêmio Osasco ainda vai jogar a Copa Paulista nesta temporada.

Mount booked for Chelsea vs Everton

Adam Jones has been left stunned by what Mason Mount did which saw him get a yellow card for Chelsea against Everton in the Premier League this afternoon.

The Lowdown: Mount cautioned

The 23-year-old found himself cautioned by the referee after he appeared to push Yerry Mina to the ground after a collision between the two players in the first half.

This sparked a brawl between both teams on the pitch, as things started to get a little heated at Goodison Park.

The Latest: Jones reacts

Taking to Twitter, Liverpool Echo journalist Jones gave his instant reaction to Mount’s antics, claiming that it was ‘very strange’ and ‘unnecessary’ from the England international.

In response to the incident, he tweeted: “Very strange one, that. Looked very off-the-ball and unnecessary.”

The Verdict: Unnecessary

As Jones rightfully points out, Mount pushing Mina back to the ground after their collision was completely unnecessary, and almost warranted the yellow card more than his actual challenge.

Still, the Colombia international did not let that faze him, as Everton got to half-time on level terms, before Richarlison gave them an early lead in the second half.

Nonetheless, the important thing was that Mina did not react to Mount’s antics, instead keeping his cool as the Toffees fought for all three points to close the gap on both Leeds United and Burnley.
