Everton now plotting summer move to sign "amazing" £50m Kubo alternative

Setting their sights on signing another attacking addition this summer, the Friedkin Group are now reportedly plotting a move to sign a talented £50 million star for Everton.

Friedkin could hand Everton £150m spree

Friedkin are in a strong position to make some much-needed changes at Everton this summer. As revealed by earlier reports, the Toffees are able to spend as much as £150m if they please ahead of next season, having already signed Thierno Barry, Mark Travers and Carlos Alcaraz on a permanent deal.

Villarreal's Thierno Barry

As they head into a new era at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, David Moyes still reportedly wants to sign two midfielders to soften the blow of Abdoulaye Doucoure’s exit and a new winger.

Several targets have emerged who would tick those boxes too, with the likes of James McAtee and Takefusa Kubo chief among their priorities. Both would be excellent additions, especially the latter, who came through at Real Madrid and has since thrived at Real Sociedad.

The Japan international, whilst not at his true best last season, still managed seven goals and four assists; the type of numbers that would see Everton land an instant upgrade on former loanee Jack Harrison.

Whether Moyes’ side can agree a deal with Sociedad in the coming weeks is the big question.

The Merseyside club are reportedly preparing to submit an offer worth around £35m, which they hope will be enough to advance any deal to sign Kubo. The move would mark Everton’s second La Liga signing of the summer after Barry and would once again steal plenty of headlines.

That said, Kubo isn’t the only option on their shortlist.

Indeed, reports are now suggesting that Friedkin have set their sights on another talented winger.

Everton plotting Tyler Dibling swoop

As reported by The Times’ Paul Joyce, Friedkin are now plotting a fresh swoop to sign Tyler Dibling from relegated Southampton this summer. The teenage talent was one of few standouts for the Saints in a season to forget last time out, and he could now get the chance to retain his Premier League place.

Dibling won’t come cheap, however. There are claims that Southampton are looking to secure as much as £50m to sell the 19-year-old this summer in what would make him Everton’s joint-record signing with Richarlison.

The big question will be whether Dibling is worthy of breaking that record, and based on Russell Martin’s praise last season, the answer is a resounding yes.

Southampton's TylerDiblingin action with Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers and Ian Maatsen

The former Southampton boss told reporters:

“Tyler was unfortunate not to play earlier because he had an amazing pre-season.

“So he has an incredible belief in himself in a really nice, humble and modest way. But he has to just keep living at 100 per cent and understand where that is and understand what’s got him this far.

“I think he has a brilliant support network with his family. He has a lot of trust from us and he has that back. It’s not always plain sailing with young players.”

Masood, Shafique hundreds see Pakistan take control

Second-wicket stand of 253 sets platform but late wickets lift England amid searing heat

Alan Gardner07-Oct-2024

Shan Masood’s first hundred as Pakistan Test captain set the tone for a vastly improved display from the hosts at the start of their series with England. Abdullah Shafique slipstreamed Masood to end a run of poor form with his fifth Test century as England’s inexperienced attack was made to toil on a day of high temperatures and hard yakka in Multan.Things could have been worse for the touring side, who were staring down the barrel after Masood and Shafique assembled a near-chanceless double-century stand to see Pakistan to 261 for 1 during the evening session. But after Gus Atkinson conjured a breakthrough and Jack Leach saw off Masood for a sparkling 151, the late wicket of Babar Azam meant England could reflect on their efforts with some satisfaction. There was no doubt about this being Pakistan’s day, however. Without a win in home Tests since 2021 and on a run of five consecutive defeats – including a 2-0 humbling against Bangladesh – since Masood took on the captaincy late last year, they were buoyed by a mammoth top-order partnership. In placid conditions, it quickly became clear that an England attack led by a 35-year-old Chris Woakes, and featuring the debutant Brydon Carse among three bowlers who had never played a game in Pakistan before, was facing a steep learning curve. The bulk of the contest was taken up by Pakistan’s second-wicket stand, eventually worth 253. England had arrived in the country amid talk of spicy pitches and a fragile home batting line-up, but Masood’s assertive innings – the second-fastest Test hundred by a Pakistan captain – and a more dogged effort from Shafique shut the door after England had bagged Saim Ayub cheaply in the fourth over. That was to be their only success for two-and-a-bit sessions as Ollie Pope, again standing in for the injured Ben Stokes, shuffled through six bowlers as the temperature hovered in the high 30s C. On 16, Masood successfully overturned an lbw decision granted to Carse, who touched 90mph in his first spell in Test cricket before flagging in the heat; a cut off the same bowler landed fractionally short of Pope at point when he had made 133. In between, there was not much other than crisp strokeplay.Masood’s first boundary came via an edge off Carse but he quickly kicked up the gears when Shoaib Bashir came on to bowl, as Pakistan seemingly looked to put pressure on England’s designated No. 1 spinner. After being hit on the pad by one that didn’t turn, Masood responded by thumping four of Bashir’s next eight balls to the rope, the pick a skip down the track and launch through cover as he sped towards a 43-ball half-century during the morning session. After lunch, Pope tested him with the short-ball ploy, Masood perhaps a little fortunate when top-edging Atkinson all the way over fine leg for six. But a more authentic loft down the ground off Leach took Masood into the 90s, before he drilled the returning Woakes through cover point and then tickled his 102nd ball for a single to bring up a first Test century in four years and 27 innings, going back to Pakistan’s 2020 tour of England.Shafique, searching for form after six single-figure scores in seven Test innings, overcame a watchful start when he was troubled on both edges by Woakes. The closest England came to breaking the stand came during the morning session when Pope missed the stumps at the non-striker’s end after Shafique chanced a non-existent run to mid-on.England take a drink on a hot day in Multan•Getty Images

Following Masood’s lead, Shafique pounced on Bashir with lunch approaching, doubling his number of boundaries with a volley of 4-4-6 – the last of which brought up his fifty, from 77 balls. He was the less fluent of the pair but, nevertheless, they were both largely untroubled as the stand pushed on past 200 deep into the afternoon, Pope taking his DRS record as captain to 11-0 when unsuccessfully reviewing for a catch at slip off Masood. After some tough moments leading the side in Stokes’ absence during England’s 2-1 win over Sri Lanka last month, Pope again found his captaincy skills stretched to their limit. He could take some credit for conjuring a mini-oasis in the middle of a Multan desert, as two wickets fell in the space of 17 balls after tea – though the heat also played its part, with both batters suffering visibly from cramp.Shafique, on 94 at the interval, had gone to his hundred soon after with another straight six but could only add a couple of runs to his score. Carse again missed out on a maiden Test wicket when a gloved pull just cleared leg slip, before England switched tactics, employing a ring field with Atkinson bowling dry in the channel: it only took four balls for Shafique to pop up a tired drive to cover. With Leach bringing a semblance of control from the other end, he was rewarded during a spell of three consecutive maidens with the wicket of Masood, who misjudged the flight to skew a return catch to the bowler – giving Leach his first Test wicket since the tour of India in January.Saud Shakeel swept and reverse-swept three boundaries in one Leach over as he and Babar put on a measured stand of 61. But England were given another lift with the shadows beginning to lengthen as Woakes – playing his first overseas Test since March 2022 – beat Babar’s inside edge with the second new ball to win an lbw decision that was upheld on review. It extended Babar’s run without a Test fifty that goes back to December 2022 and could prove a vital fillip for Woakes as he seeks to repay England’s faith in him despite an average north of 50 away from home.England’s initial success in removing Ayub might have raised expectations but Masood’s decision to bat (Pope said he would have done the same) was soon backed up, despite an initial tinge of green to the surface. There was little movement on offer for England’s opening pair of Woakes and Atkinson, and it was something of a surprise when Ayub gloved an innocuous-looking short ball to the keeper. The dismissal extended Shafique and Ayub’s miserable run as an opening pair, failing to reach double-figures for the seventh time in a row. Atkinson, having enjoyed a stunning debut during England’s home summer, had a wicket with his 10th ball on tour. Both he and his team-mates had to wait 56 overs before they had a second.

West Ham establish contact to sign "terrific" £40m+ Premier League starlet

With just under a month to go until the transfer window slams shut, West Ham United have now reportedly established direct contact to sign a Premier League rival.

Potter: West Ham still "working" on incomings

Having so far welcomed just four fresh faces in the form of Daniel Cummings, El Hadji Malick Diouf, Kyle Walker-Peters and Callum Wilson, West Ham still look short on the quality to improve on last season.

However, with a few weeks remaining until deadline day, Graham Potter has insisted that the Hammers are still working on potential incomings. He told reporters: “We’re working behind the scenes and if there’s an opportunity to strengthen, we will.”

To that end, it seems as though a new goalkeeper took West Ham’s immediate priority following Wilson’s arrival, with Botafogo’s John Victor currently the favourite to arrive this month. The Hammers have reportedly held advanced talks to sign the Brazilian, who would instantly have the task of battling for Alphonse Areola’s starting role.

When compared, it is the potential new arrival that stands out for his quality. That said, whether that will remain the case in the Premier League is the question that West Ham must ask themselves.

Meanwhile, away from their defensive third, those at the London Stadium have also set their sights on other potential reinforcements before the transfer window slams shut.

Having strengthened in attack and added to their backline, West Ham have now reportedly made their first move to sign a midfield arrival who knows all about the Premier League.

West Ham establish contact to sign Ramsey

As reported by Caught Offside, West Ham have now established direct contact to sign Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa this summer. The Villans are reportedly demanding as much as £43m to sell their midfield graduate, with Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur joining the Hammers in an all-Premier League race.

The 24-year-old struggled with injuries once again last season and started just 19 Premier League games. But his quality in those games cannot be ignored. By the end of the campaign, Ramsey had one goal and five assists to his name in a total of 29 appearances at the heart of Unai Emery’s side.

West Ham have already taken a risk on the injury-prone Wilson – albeit a far cheaper one – and should now consider adding Ramsey to their summer additions.

A player who Steven Gerrard once backed to become a “terrific” player, Ramsey would have every opportunity to become that at West Ham if he swapped the Midlands for the London Stadium this summer.

Imrul Kayes announces red-ball retirement

The batter, whose career was most notable for his opening partnership with Tamim Iqbal, played the last of his 39 Tests in 2019

Imrul Kayes has announced his retirement from Test and first-class cricket. He said in a video message on his Facebook page that his last red-ball match will be Khulna Division’s National Cricket League (NCL) match against Dhaka Division at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka next week. He will, however, continue to play white-ball cricket.”On November 16, I will retire from Test and first-class cricket. It is the most difficult and emotional decision of my life,” he said.Imrul played the last of his 39 Tests at Eden Gardens in 2019, in the first day-night Test match in India. Batting mostly at the top of the order and occasionally at No. 3, he made 1797 runs at an average of 24.28, with three centuries and four fifties.Imrul’s Test career was however more about his opening partnership with Tamim Iqbal. They remain Bangladesh’s most prolific opening pair by far, having added 2336 runs in 53 innings. The next-highest aggregate for a Bangladesh opening pair currently is 665 runs between Javed Omar and Nafees Iqbal. Imrul and Tamim’s average first-wicket partnership of 45.80 is also the best of any Bangladesh opening pair. They put on four century stands, the first of them a 185-run partnership at Lord’s in 2010, and the last a world-record 312 against Pakistan in Khulna in 2015. It helped Bangladesh save the Test match after conceding a 296-run first-innings lead, and remains the only 300-plus opening stand in the third or fourth innings of a Test match. The last time they opened together was in the 2018 home Test series against Sri Lanka.Imrul is now 70 runs short of the 8000-run mark in first-class cricket. He will have a chance to complete the feat in Mirpur, where his farewell game begins on November 16.

Fewer touches than Raya: 5/10 Arsenal dud showed why Berta has to sign Eze

Okay, so that might have just been Arsenal’s third official pre-season friendly, but we can admit that losing a North London Derby always hurts.

Mikel Arteta’s side looked to continue their perfect record this afternoon, but Tottenham Hotspur had other ideas.

The Lilywhites scored in the first half, and while there were a few chances to draw level, the Gunners just did not look anywhere near as sharp as they have in the two games prior.

Unfortunately, several players stood out for all the wrong reasons, including one who was so underwhelming, he showed just why Andrea Berta needs to get Eberechi Eze to the Emirates before the Premier League season starts.

Arsenal's underwhelming stars

While there is no need to go in too hard on anyone in a pre-season friendly, there were more than a few starters this afternoon who’ll really need to bounce back in a significant way against Villarreal next week, such as Kai Havertz.

Performance in Numbers

Want data and stats? Football FanCast’s Performance in Numbers series provides you with the latest match analysis from across Europe.

The German set up two goals for the team against Newcastle United in the last game, but was entirely ineffective against Spurs today, offering little to no threat as a goalscorer or creator.

In fact, the most notable thing the German did was take out Djed Spence with a sliding tackle after being nutmegged by Cristian Romero, and therefore more than deserving of the 5/10 match rating he received from the Standard’s Simon Collings.

Another player to get a 5/10 was David Raya, who was lobbed from the halfway line by Pape Matar Sarr after Myles Lewis Skelly lost possession.

It wasn’t just the goal, though, as the Spaniard looked off his game for practically the entire match and, as Collings put it, was ‘unusually shaky when trying to deal with set-pieces’.

Arsenal'sDavidRayaapplauds fans after the match

However, there was another starter who really let himself down, someone whose lacklustre display only further made the case for why Berta and Co need to sign Eze as soon as possible: Gabriel Martinelli.

Martinelli's lacklustre showing against Spurs

Unfortunately, it really was a game to forget for Martinelli this afternoon, as while Bukayo Saka endeavoured to make something happen on the opposite flank, he failed to do much of anything.

In the first half, the Brazilian international failed to make the most of the space available to him and was easily dealt with by Pedro Porro.

Then, in the second half, as Spurs began to sit back more, he was completely unable to get past the Lilywhites’ low-block.

Arsenal's GabrielMartinellireacts

We weren’t the only ones disappointed with the former Ituano gem either, who took fewer touches than Raya, as Collings dished out another 5/10 rating for the 23-year-old, writing that it was a ‘quiet game’ for the winger.

It was his inability to have any discernible impact whatsoever in the second half that truly highlighted the need for a player like Eze this summer, as while the Crystal Palace ace spent most of last season in midfield, he’s also an accomplished and creative winger.

For example, in 32 appearances off the left for the Eagles, the 27-year-old “magician,” as dubbed by pundit Micah Richards, has scored six goals and provided six assists, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 2.66 games.

In contrast, the Gunners’ number 11 has scored 40 goals and provided 26 assists in 179 appearances there, which comes out to a worse average of a goal involvement every 2.71 games.

Moreover, he’s achieved those numbers in a team that have been challenging for the title over the last three years, whereas Palace are a mid-table side at best.

Ultimately, we aren’t saying Arsenal need to sell Martinelli, but the game today once again made it crystal clear that against a low-block, he’s incredibly ineffective, and therefore, Berta should be doing what he can to bring in Eze, as he’s got the creativity to help the club solve that problem on the left.

Patterson's revival continues as New South Wales cement complete control

Late wickets for Jackson Bird left South Australia facing the prospect of their first defeat of the season

Kurtis Patterson has taken the next step in his revival as a first-class cricketer, hitting another half-century as New South Wales rammed home their advantage over South Australia.Dropped from NSW’s Sheffield Shield side for most of last summer and fearing his career could be over, Patterson made it three straight half-centuries for the Blues on Friday. With NSW well on top, Patterson struck 71 to help NSW to 394 late on day two and a first-innings lead of 284 at Karen Rolton Oval.Related

South Australia went to stumps at 53 for 3, still needing 231 more runs to make NSW bat again. Paceman Jackson Bird had taken 2 for 15 to follow his first innings heroics of 7 for 46.Patterson took his time through the majority of his innings, crunching two boundaries through the covers and another through mid on. The two-time Test representative eventually lost his leg stump trying to glance Brendan Doggett, but Patterson has now clearly given himself a second life as a first-class cricketer. He has made scores of 91, 66 and 71 since his return earlier this month, after only being recalled when NSW found themselves short on batters through Australia A duties.Patterson was one of four NSW players to pass 50 against the previously-undefeated South Australians. After Nic Maddinson hit 69 on the opening evening, Oliver Davies blasted his way to 56 on day two by regularly taking on spinner Lloyd Pope down the ground.Wearing a floppy hat, Davies used his feet to hit Pope for four through cover, down the ground for a big six and then over cover for four again in quick succession.Matthew Gilkes also hit 55, while Nathan McAndrew took 4 for 90 for South Australia and Doggett 3 for 90. No South Australians were, however, able to replicate the joy of NSW veteran Bird on day one, who set up the Blues’ dominance.
