India fast bowler Umesh Yadav has signed with Essex for the final three matches of the County Championship season.Umesh will replace New Zealand quick Doug Bracewell in the squad, joining Simon Harmer as the second overseas player.Essex sit second in Division One heading into the final month of the English summer, 17 points behind leaders and defending champions Surrey. Their next Championship game is against Middlesex, starting on September 4, and they finish the season with fixtures against Hampshire and Northamptonshire.Umesh turned out for Middlesex last year and played three Championship games for them, picking up four wickets at 71.50. A quad injury, which he suffered during a game against Gloucestershire in the Royal London One-Day Cup, ended his stint early.”I am really pleased to join Essex and make what I hope will be some valuable contributions to the team’s success this year,” Umesh said in an Essex press release. “I enjoyed playing in England with Middlesex last season, and it will be good to return and test myself in those conditions again, especially in the midst of a title race.”He has played 57 Tests, 75 ODIs and nine T20Is for India, and has picked up a combined 288 international wickets. His most recent appearance for India came at the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia in June, where he claimed a match-haul of 2 for 131 as India lost by 209 runs at The Oval.”Umesh is a superb signing for us, and we all know what he will be able to bring to our attack at a crucial time of the season,” Essex head coach Anthony McGrath said.”He is vastly experienced and has taken wickets at the top levels of the game for more than a decade now, so as well as contributing during our run-in, we hope he can pass on some of his wisdom to our young players too.”

Batters in focus as West Indies look to go back-to-back against India

Given India had a longish tail in Tarouba, they could consider bringing in Jaiswal for one of the wristspinners

Big picture: Fearless approach sets the toneIn the first T20I on Thursday, there was a hint of the fearlessness and the freedom with which both West Indies and India batted. Despite losing both opening batters inside three balls of the fifth over, Nicholas Pooran pumped Yuzvendra Chahal for a four and a six off the next three deliveries. Next over, he deposited Axar Patel for a six and four.Fast forward to the run chase where India too lost both openers early. They were scoring at less than a run a ball two deliveries into the final over of the powerplay when debutant Tilak Varma pulled back-to-back sixes to show us just a glimpse of the future. Both teams are filled with eye-catching hitters and the T20 format offers the perfect stage to entertain only it was the bowlers who shone the brightest. India’s spinners did not let the odd boundary throw them off their plans and West Indies’ seamers used their change of pace to pull off a fine defence. The last time West Indies beat India in successive T20Is was in 2016. That only four runs separated the teams in Tarouba perhaps points towards a closely contested five-match series.Form guideWest Indies WWLWL (Last five completed T20Is; most recent first)
India LWWLW
In the spotlight: Shepherd and HardikRomario Shepherd has faced just 185 balls across 13 innings in T20Is and sent 34 of them for a six or a four. That’s a balls per boundary ratio of 5.44, which fits a player who usually bats at No. 6 or lower. He has a strike rate of 205.88 in the last five overs in T20Is this year, the second-best for any batter to have faced at least 30 deliveries in that phase. While he managed just four from six balls on a used pitch against India, his two previous T20I knocks were an unbeaten 44 off 22 and another unbeaten 41 off 18 – both against South Africa in March 2023. If Shepherd can keep this form going, then he all but becomes a shoo-in ahead of next year’s T20 World Cup.Contrast that with Hardik Pandya’s recent form. When he first came into the side, he was a finisher. Now he seems to prefer batting up the order. But it’s not entirely working. Since the T20Is against New Zealand last November, India’s short-format captain strikes at only 106.31 in the middle overs, hitting just one out of the 95 balls he has faced for six. If that’s him biding his time for the death, then a strike rate of 119.23 doesn’t quite make the job well done territory. All but set to lead a refreshed and a much younger T20I side of India in the medium term, he will be keen to show the way before it gets too late.Romario Shepherd has been one of the fiercest strikers at the death•Associated Press

Team news: How do India shorten their tail?West Indies wouldn’t want to tinker with a winning combination, especially since one more victory would take them close to a series win.West Indies (probable): 1 Brandon King, 2 Kyle Mayers, 3 Johnson Charles (wk), 4 Nicholas Pooran, 5 Shimron Hetmyer, 6 Rovman Powell (capt), 7 Jason Holder, 8 Romario Shepherd, 9 Akeal Hosein, 10 Alzarri Joseph, 11 Obed McCoyPlaying three spinners in Tarouba left India with four No. 11s. So even as they needed only 37 from the final 27 balls, once the last recognised batter – Axar- fell it became a tall ask, though Arshdeep Singh did give West Indies a scare. That might force India to play Yashasvi Jaiswal, the only spare batter in the squad, leading to a toss up between Kuldeep and Chahal.India (probable): 1 Shubman Gill, 2 Ishan Kishan (wk), 3 Yashasvi Jaiswal, 4 Suryakumar Yadav, 5 Tilak Varma, 6 Hardik Pandya (capt), 7 Sanju Samson, 8 Axar Patel, 9 Kuldeep Yadav/Yuzvendra Chahal, 10 Arshdeep Singh, 11 Mukesh KumarPitch and conditions: Rain expectedTwo of the last five T20Is at Providence Stadium in Guyana have been washed out. The scores batting first in the three completed games were 146, 157 and 163, with the chasing team winning twice. Going by that trend, prepare for more middling scores and more rain.Stats and trivia With a minimum of 40 wickets while playing for Full Members in T20Is, only four have an average less than 15, and an economy rate under seven. Kuldeep is one of them. Kyle Mayers averages only 20.81 as opener in T20Is. That is the second-lowest for any West Indies batter to have opened at least 20 times in the format. West Indies and India had played a T20I at Providence in 2019 too. But no member from the visitors’ playing XI from that game is part of the squad for the ongoing T20I series.Quotes”This series will be decided on how the West Indian batters bat spin in those middle overs. If we bat spin good during the middle overs, then we have lot of batters and a lot of power in the back end… That makes left-handers – [Shimron] Hetmyer, [Nicholas] Pooran and Kyle Mayers – very important.”

“That’s his way of playing – he has a lot of attacking shots. He played really well despite being on debut, and despite the pressure of a run chase. There were some beautiful strokes, and he should back himself. I believe he will win a lot of matches for his side in the future.”

New Zealand came into the tournament with only 12 of their 15-player squad available for the first game, with Kane Williamson and Tim Southee recovering from serious injuries and Lockie Ferguson suffering back stiffness. By the time they play their next match, on Friday, they should have all 15 players available and the performance against Netherlands could help them decide who to pick.Let’s start with the obvious: when captain Williamson is ready for competitive cricket, he’ll slot straight back in at No. 3, which would ordinarily leave room for only two of Devon Conway, Will Young and Rachin Ravindra. All three have put good numbers on the board at this tournament, Young becoming the latest to do so. He came back from a second-ball duck against England to score his sixth half-century this year and third in six innings, making a strong claim to continue as an opener.Read the full analysis from Firdose MoondaNews headlinesFormer England captain Eoin Morgan has played down Jofra Archer’s hopes of featuring in any part in the World Cup as he continues his comeback from long-term injuries.

Buttler: ‘If players can’t dive, does that question the integrity of the game?’

Six matches down, 42 to come… it’s too soon to form any broad judgements about the destiny of the 2023 World Cup. However, as England’s chastened cricketers head for the tournament’s highest peak in Dharamsala, they do so with clear reason to doubt their readiness to scale the heights that they conquered so memorably on home soil four years ago. It’s not that Jos Buttler’s men cannot bounce back from that unfathomably vast drubbing against New Zealand in Ahmedabad. Resilience has been an under-appreciated feature of the champion team that they have built up over the past eight years – perhaps never better demonstrated than in their backs-to-the-wall escape from the group stage in 2019.Full previewBangladesh (possible): 1 Tanzid Hasan, 2 Litton Das, 3 Najmul Hossain Shanto, 4 Shakib Al Hasan (capt), 5 Towhid Hridoy, 6 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 7 Mehidy Hasan Miraz, 8 Mahmudullah/Mahedi Hasan, 9 Taskin Ahmed, 10 Shoriful Islam, 11 Mustafizur RahmanEngland (possible): 1 Jonny Bairstow, 2 Dawid Malan, 3 Joe Root, 4 Harry Brook, 5 Jos Buttler (capt & wk), 6 Liam Livingstone, 7 Sam Curran, 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Mark Wood, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 Reece Topley.Pakistan vs Sri Lanka, Hyderabad (2pm IST; 8.30pm GMT; 7.30pm AEDT)Saud Shakeel is a form player for Pakistan•Associated Press

Both sides have played one game in this World Cup, have shaken hands and introduced themselves to this World Cup. Neither has quite made the best first impression, but Pakistan have two points and a win pinned to their lapel, while Sri Lanka remain unadorned at the points table. Williamson: 'When you get to finals, things start again'

He is used to his side being underestimated, even after reaching the final of the previous two 50-over World Cups

Williamson lauds ‘incredible’ Ravindra: ‘Fantastic contributions at such a young age’

Kane Williamson consigned 45 matches across six weeks to the history books on the eve of the World Cup semi-final in Mumbai. His New Zealand side finished fourth in the group stages with five wins and four defeats while their opponents India were unbeaten and top of the table. But Williamson considers those positions irrelevant.”Come finals time, everything starts again,” he said, repeatedly drawing a line under the group stages in several answers during his pre-match press conference at the Wankhede Stadium. “It’s great to have got to the final stages and then take a fresh approach, because it does start again.”New Zealand started the World Cup with four consecutive wins, then suffered four consecutive defeats to jeopardise their semi-final spot. They were on the cusp of the knockout stages after a five-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in Bengaluru which boosted their net run rate, before Afghanistan and Pakistan’s defeats confirmed their progress.Related

They have had to manage a number of injuries throughout the World Cup: Matt Henry returned home after seven group games with a hamstring tear; Williamson himself fractured his thumb after returning from a ligament damage; and several others have overcome niggles or illnesses. On Wednesday, they will pick from a full squad of 15.”When you get to finals, things start again,” Williamson reiterated. “Prior to that, you’re really focusing on six weeks of good cricket to hold you in good stead at the back end of round-robin play… Teams work hard to get to this stage: they have to play a lot of good cricket within the format of the tournament to get here, over such a long period of time.”He chuckled when one reporter suggested that India would view their opponents as “a bit tricky,” saying: “Every game in this tournament is a tricky one. As we’ve seen throughout, any team can beat anybody on the day, whether that’s [because of] the quality in both sides, but also the changing conditions and how that has an impact.”They face a daunting challenge: to become the first side at this World Cup to beat India who have been the standout team with both bat and ball, sweeping all-comers aside. “We know it’s going to be a really tough challenge: they’re a side that’s been playing extremely well,” Williamson said. The last time India and New Zealand met in the World Cup semi-final•Getty Images

He is used to his side being underestimated, even after reaching the final of the previous two 50-over World Cups: “The underdog thing – from what you guys [the press] write, I don’t think it has changed too much. But that’s fine, and India have been exceptional: one of, if not the best team going around, and playing cricket that matches that.”But we know as well, on our day, when we play our best cricket, it certainly gives us the best chance. And, come finals time, anything can happen… It’s very much a focus on our cricket again: we’ve played some good cricket throughout, we’ve had a couple of narrow losses and a few wins along the way which have put us in this position we’re in.”Williamson has only made three appearances at this tournament due to his injuries – though that represents three more games than he initially expected to play when he ruptured his ACL in the IPL earlier this year. “It’s been an interesting journey, from not being a chance to getting close and it becoming a reality and something to target.”[I was] certainly feeling really grateful to be here, and then to get back and then break my thumb… it was quite frustrating and testing. It hadn’t ruled me out, so I still was grateful for that and it’s nice to be fitter than perhaps I was yesterday… these tournaments are special, and world events in India certainly add to that.”Wednesday’s semi-final is a repeat of four years ago, when New Zealand prevailed by 18 runs in a slow-burning, rain-affected epic. “I think the game will be a little bit different: it might be played over one day rather than two, looking at the weather,” Williamson said. “It’s a great occasion.”The crowd at Old Trafford was dominated by Indian fans in the 2019 semi-final, and the Wankhede will be even more partisan on Wednesday night. “We’re expecting a fairly blue crowd that will be supporting their team and no doubt, they’ll be very passionate about that,” Williamson said.”When you get the opportunity to play in front of those sorts of crowds, it is special. We remember over the years, a number of different crowds that we’ve had that haven’t always been our own fans – in fact, often they’re not; we have got a small country, that doesn’t always fill out the stadium.”But you still appreciate the atmosphere that it brings, and I’m sure there’ll be a good one tomorrow. Guys have all different levels of experience with those things, but to me, it’s about embracing it. Not many people get that opportunity: cricket in India, playing against India in a World Cup semi-final is special, and something to appreciate and look forward to.”
