Best January deal since Bruno: Man Utd enquire over dream Tel alternative

Perhaps the best January signing Manchester United have ever made was a deal to bring Bruno Fernandes to Old Trafford. He signed from Sporting CP for upwards of £67.7m including add-ons, the fifth most expensive January deal of all time.

Fernandes’ impact on the club has been unfathomable. He is the United captain and has played 268 times for the club. In that time, he has scored 88 goals and registered 77 assists, a remarkable record.

Perhaps United’s most recent reported January target can have the same impact as their Portuguese Magnifico.

Man Utd's search for a striker

The player in question here is Juventus forward Dusan Vlahovic. According to a report from Graeme Bailey, the Red Devils are thought to have enquired about his current ‘situation at Juventus’, and could pursue a late move.

They will face competition from some big Premier League rivals. North Londoners Arsenal and top four contenders Aston Villa have also asked Juve about the striker’s situation. Given it seems unlikely he will sign a new deal, there is a chance they could bring him in.

Why Vlahovic would be a good signing

Despite a lack of opportunities under Juventus manager Thiago Motta, Vlahoivc has still been in impressive form during the 2024/25 campaign. He has played 28 games so far this term and has 13 goals and two assists in that time.

Perhaps the striker’s most significant contribution this campaign came against Manchester City in the Champions League. He scored one goal in Juve’s 2-0 win over the Premier League champions. It is certainly a strike that will resonate with the Red Devils fans.

Should United get a deal for the Serbian “monster” – as hailed by analyst Ben Mattinson – over the line, he could be a perfect alternative signing to Bayern Munich attacker Mathys Tel. The Frenchman seems unlikely to make the move to Old Trafford, according to Jamie Jackson.

Mathys Tel

Now, there is no doubt that Vlahovic and Tel are slightly different players. The Juve man is an out-and-out centre-forward, whereas Tel is more versatile and can play up front or out on the wing.

However, United need goals at the minute, so it is surely not much of an issue for the Red Devils. In fact, to get an idea of how good of an alternative Tel would be to Vlahovic, you can compare them statistically on FBref.

Using data from the past two domestic top-flight seasons in Italy and Germany respectively, Vlahovic’s natural striker instinct shines through, as shown by his expected goals tally of 0.65xG compared to just 0.31xG for Tel.

Furthermore, the Serbian international is someone who can bring teammates into the game and actually averages 0.93 key passes per 90 minutes over the past two seasons. That is slightly more than Tel, who plays 0.9 key passes per game.

Signing Vlahoivc could be the perfect alternative move to Tel. The Frenchman seems unattainable for United now, but the chance to sign Vlahovic, a “deadly” striker as Mattinson described him, might be too good to be true.

This could be United’s dream signing, and perhaps end up being their best January addition since Fernandes five years ago.

Shanaka: 'If you can control your emotions, as a team you can go very far'

“The loss to Afghanistan was unexpected but we didn’t panic,” says Asia Cup-winning Sri Lanka captain

Sri Lanka’s white-ball captain Dasun Shanaka refused to take the credit for the side’s Asia Cup triumph, and instead heaped praise on his players for making his job easy.”Whether it’s Wanindu [Hasaranga], Chamika [Karunaratne] or Bhanuka [Rajapaksa], everyone gets down to the same level and works together,” said a relaxed Shanaka, facing local media for the first time since Sri Lanka’s victory on Sunday.”When Wanindu goes and gives some advice to a younger player, a lot of the time it’s useful. Similarly, we always consult the players before taking decisions. This is why it makes my job easy; I can’t take the credit, as a team each person involved deserves the credit.”Related

Shanaka hopes Asia Cup win triggers 'the turnaround' Sri Lanka cricket needs

He is not wrong though. This Sri Lanka side is the quintessential ‘more than the sum of its parts’ unit – it’s unlikely that many of their players would find their way into the starting XIs of any of the other top T20I sides.Yet they’ve strung five wins on the trot to lift the Asia Cup. A win that had looked improbable, especially after they had been trounced by Afghanistan in the opening game of the tournament. Their odds of winning the tournament were already low, and plunged to borderline nonexistent after that defeat. But Shanaka never panicked.A tactical of elements go into the making of such a victory, but for Shanaka, having a more democratic approach to decision-making and keeping his players relaxed and in an optimal mindset to perform their skills in high-pressure situations was just as crucial.”As a captain, the best thing I can do is give a player the confidence to perform their skills.” he said. “I also don’t get upset if they make a mistake. A lot of cricket is about emotions; if you can control your emotions, as a team you can go very far.”I don’t like to put limits and pressure on players. If you put a limit on a player, you can’t get the best out of them on the field. It’s just as important to get them feeling good on the ground as well as off it. As a side, we’ve started to understand that. So the players were quite relaxed and the results followed from that.”The loss to Afghanistan was Sri Lanka’s first and last of the tournament, with each subsequent win more impressive than the previous one. For Sri Lankan fans watching at home and in the stands, what they were seeing was hardly believable. Was this really the same team that had lost a home and away series to Australia, and was comprehensively beaten in India earlier this year? Shanaka understands their apprehensions, though he himself never shared such feelings of uncertainty – even after Sri Lanka were bowled out for 105 by Afghanistan.”At the start, the goal was to make it to the second round and just perform well in the tournament, because we felt we had a good side,” he said. “But the loss to Afghanistan was unexpected. We never expected to lose like that – they were not a side we expected to lose like that to. We had gone to the tournament well prepared, our fitness levels were very good, we just needed to trust that. So we didn’t panic or change too many things because we knew the talent we had in the side.”One of the most impressive aspects of Sri Lanka’s performance was that their wins came in almost exclusively must-win scenarios – something that makes them more memorable. And in such high-stakes games, Shanaka was aware that the team that handled the pressure better would invariably come out on top.”When you talk about cricket, there’s always pressure. At no time will you be playing a game without pressure. Every team comes well prepared nowadays. The analysis has gotten to such a level now, that we know that in every game, teams come knowing what our weaknesses are and how to play us. I’ve always said that we have a good variety, whether it comes to batting or bowling. As a captain, that’s always great to have in giving us the best chance to win.””As a captain, the best thing I can do is give a player the confidence to perform their skills”•Getty Images

Sri Lanka’s next assignment is the T20 World Cup in Australia, one which they will first have to qualify for. Preparations for the tournament will begin on September 25, when the team heads off for a training camp in Pallekele, Kandy – where pitches are as close to those in Australia as one can find in Sri Lanka.”I think our skill level is quite high, while our fitness levels are also really good. The only thing is seeing how well we will be able to adjust to the conditions [in Australia]. So the camp in Kandy will help our players in getting used to conditions that are similar to those in Australia, so we will get a better idea of how to bat and bowl. We also had a tour of Australia earlier this year, which would have given the players a better idea on how to play in those conditions.”The fact that this Sri Lankan side is largely made up of players yet to hit the traditional peak years also gives Shanaka reason for optimism for the future.”The average age of the side is just 24-25 years. Pathum Nissanka, Charith Asalanka, Wanindu Hasaranga, they are still 23-24 years of age. A player’s best years are usually between the ages of 28 and 33, so to even get to that level, there’s still some five years to go. It’s looking at that that I say our future looks good. In a similar vein, Dilshan Madushanka is just 21 years old, Maheesh Theekshana is 22 – if those cricketers continue to progress well, then our cricket will be well looked after for the next ten years at least.”

BOM INÍCIO DO NÁUTICO

Williams: 'Definitely a big skill gap' between Zimbabwe and Australia

“Playing against teams like this is a good thing to bring a little bit more match awareness in the future”

Andrew McGlashan31-Aug-2022

Sean Williams top-scored for Zimbabwe on his return from injury•Getty Images

It’s hard to sugarcoat an ODI loss that comes in less time than the length of one innings, but Zimbabwe are determined to keep the bigger picture in mind on their brief tour of Australia.Sean Williams, who top-scored for Zimbabwe with 29 in their 96 all out on his return from injury, echoed the comments of coach Dave Houghton from a day before, about the skill gap between the two teams, but said that it would only be bridged by more experience against top opposition.Mitchell Starc ran through the Zimbabwe top order with three wickets and Josh Hazlewood was a handful with the new ball. Cameron Green backed up his five wickets in the opening game with two more, as he also found considerable bounce from a tricky surface, while Adam Zampa’s legspin wrapped things up inside 28 overs.Related

'I like the challenge' – Madhevere hopes for a run at No. 3

Williams conceded the extra pace of Australia’s quicks added to the challenge, but it was their relentlessness in finding movement and building pressure that was the biggest difference.”You can call it a bad day, it’s also a good sign of the difference between the two sides,” he said. “Without being too negative about the whole thing there’s definitely a skill gap between the teams, quite a big one as well, but it’s a good opportunity… playing against teams like this is a good thing to bring a little bit more match awareness in the future for the [T20] World Cup, and when we get back down to our kind of level, we’ll be that much better.”It’s obviously a bit different when we face 140 clicks to run down to that, or to run down to 130, it’s a very big difference, so they could push us off our lengths whereas we couldn’t. We do face that pace often, so it’s not really the pace, it’s more the skill level of swinging the ball late, hitting a good area consistently and how to get you off that length. The top level will run at that pace, or sit back and pull it, but when you go down a level that pace is difficult… it’s a different game.”Williams also hoped that Zimbabwe may get a bit of luck at the toss in the final game of the series on Saturday, having twice been inserted by Aaron Finch with early-morning starts. Their openers, Innocent Kaia and Tadiwanashe Marumani, combatted it well in the first match, and were singled out for praise by Houghton, but on Wednesday, they were 14 for 3 in the seventh over against Starc.”The wickets have been tough, losing the toss twice hasn’t been the greatest thing,” Williams said. “I felt that even we gave them a little bit of a run for their money at the top of the order this afternoon [Australia were 16 for 2, but ended up winning by eight wickets]. There’s a lot of work to be done, but don’t want to be negative. It’s a positive thing, a lot of our guys can play at this level.”

Their next Kristoffer Ajer: Celtic in talks to sign "towering" star for £0

Fair to say, this season is going rather well at Parkhead for Celtic.

Brendan Rodgers’ side are currently ten points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership, with a game in hand, are through to the fifth round of the Scottish Cup and have already got their hands on the League Cup, defeating Rangers on penalties in December.

Meantime, the Hoops have reached the Champions League knockout stages for the first time in 12 seasons, so go into Wednesday night’s clash with Aston Villa with the pressure off, still seeking to finish as high up the table as possible.

In the transfer market, it’s been a mixed week for the Celtic support, with fans’ favourite Jota returning from Stade Rennais, 18 months after departing for the Saudi Pro League, although this did heartbreakingly see Kyōgo Furuhashi go in the opposite direction.

Now, could the Scottish champions be in the market for a new centre-back?

Celtic looking to bolster their back-line

According to a report by Anthony Joseph of Sky Sports News, Celtic are “interested” in Odense centre-back Tobias Slotsager.

The report notes that talks have already taken place with the defender’s agents and with the player out of contact in the summer, he could be signed on a Bosman.

So who is Tobias Slotsager?

What the experts say about Tobias Slotsager

Well, Slotsager is a 19-year-old centre-back, who’s been with Odense Boldklub since the age of 13, making his professional debut three years later against Vejle Boldklub in May 2022.

In total, he’s now made 59 appearances for OB, earning rave reviews, despite the fact the Striwerne were actually relegated from the Danish Superligaen last season, thereby dropping out of the top flight for the first time since 1999.

Despite his team’s struggles, Jamie Rietiker-Wright of Sport Republic believes Slotsager is “a special young defender”. Further reviews come from Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout who labelled him a “complete & elegant centre-back”, while a report by Dutch outlet Voetbal Primeur described him as a “towering defender”, exclaiming he is “one of the greatest talents” in football right now.

Slotsager featured in the Guardian’s Next Generation series for 2023, in which Michael Yokhin noted he is “tactically astute way beyond his age”, while Odense youth coach Tonny Hermansen stated “Tobias is a player with huge potential, and we believe that he could go really far. Despite all the praise, [he] keeps his feet on the ground and continues to work hard in every training session”.

How Tobias Slotsager could be Celtic's next Ajer

A move for Slotsager would be reminiscent of when Celtic signed an 18-year-old Kristoffer Ajer from Eliteserien outfit Start in 2016, for a reported £650,000.

Ajer would go on to make 176 appearances for Celtic, winning nine major trophies, before being sold to Brentford for £13.5m, representing a massive profit.

So, let’s compare Ajer’s time in Norway to Slotsager’s career in Denmark so far.

As shown in the table, Ajer was similarly inexperienced when he joined Celtic as Slotsager is now, having made a similar number of appearances and minutes at similar levels; Denmark’s top-flight is currently ranked 16th by UEFA, albeit OB are currently in the second-tier, while the Norwegian first division actually came in at 22nd when Ajer most-recently played there in 2016.

Former Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer.

In terms of the other statistics, Ajer does come out on top, but that does not mean Slotsager’s numbers are not impressive because, as noted by Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout, the teenager ranked first in last season’s Superligaen for % of defensive duels won (82.5%).

Given he is still only 19, Slotsager may not be ready to have an immediate impact in Celtic’s first team, similar to Ajer, who spent the second half of his first season in Scotland on loan at Kilmarnock, but this young defender appears to be a special talent, so the Premiership champions should do everything in their power to snap-up his future.

Nottingham Forest keen on signing "exceptional" £30m Premier League player

Nottingham Forest are keen on signing an “exceptional” Premier League player this summer, and he is now expected to leave his club, according to a report.

Forest planning for the summer

Forest could be in a strong position to attract some top-quality players in the summer given their unexpected push for Europe this season, and they have already started weighing up their options.

The Tricky Trees are said to be readying a new move for Brentford forward Yoane Wissa after having a £22m bid knocked back in January, with manager Nuno Espirito Santo believed to be a big fan of the 28-year-old.

The Bees were insistent that Wissa was not for sale in the winter, and while it remains to be seen whether they soften their stance over the next few months, Nuno has now started to identify potential alternative targets.

Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta is one of the names on the list, with the striker still deliberating over whether to commit to a new contract at Selhurst Park.

Forest are clearly looking to refresh their attacking options in the summer, but they are also looking to strengthen at the other end of the pitch, with a report from The Boot Room revealing that they still hold an active interest in Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

NewcastleUnited's Jacob Murphy in action with Liverpool's CaoimhinKelleher

The Tricky Trees were keen on a move for Kelleher last summer, at which point the Reds were unwilling to sanction his departure, but there is now a feeling he will leave the Premier League leaders this summer.

Arne Slot is ready to sell the Irishman, who could be brought in to replace Matz Sels, despite Nuno being happy with his goalkeeper’s performances this season.

Kelleher outperforming Sels on key metrics

Although it must be noted that Kelleher has a stronger defence in front of him with the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate making up the backline at Anfield, he has outperformed Sels on some key metrics over the past year.

Not only that, but the Ireland international has also been described as “exceptional” by former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, and he has received high praise from teammate Andy Robertson this season.

The 26-year-old is unlikely to come cheap, with reports indicating the Reds could look to hold out for a fee of £30m, but there are clear indications he could be a real upgrade for Forest between the sticks.

That said, signing a new ‘keeper may not be a priority given that Sels has been largely dependable this season, and Nuno is happy with his performances.
