Jordan Cox 94 leads Kent to victory at Somerset

Klaassen, Linde and Stewart claim two wickets each to seal comfortable win

Sick of the sight of him. That’s what Somerset will be when it comes to Jordan Cox. One suspects they won’t be the last county either.Cox broke Somerset hearts in the 2021 Blast Final with an unbeaten 58 from 28 and a candidate for catch of, well, cricket. This time he had a Taunton crowd scuttling for cover with 94 off just 47 balls, a statistician-pleasing strike-rate of 200, and, most importantly, Kent’s title defence belatedly up and running.Kent posted 202 for 7 all in and, in response, Somerset stumbled to 44 for 3 in the powerplay. Will Smeed, Tom Banton and Rilee Rossouw had all been and gone: thereafter they were simply limping and waiting to be put down.As the Group stages near halfway, meaningful glances can be had at the table. Kent fans will wince: this was just their second victory of the season. But this format is all about momentum: if the Spitfires can find it, reaching the quarter-finals is not impossible. Somerset had theirs checked but are still excellently placed.Cox was afforded one lifeline en-route to a career best, Lewis Gregory putting down a chance that ought to have been taken. Cox had 53 then and should have been the latest Ben Green victim. But this was a supreme knock. Kent were looking sub-par relatively late in the innings but Cox was unflustered. The first of his six sixes came in the 12th over. It was a remarkable shot off Craig Overton, released from the England Test squad. Cox danced inside a short ball, swivelled and disturbed the graves t’other side of Gimblett’s Hill.Back into his shell he went, until over 18 which – by the way – started with Kent 148 for 5. From deep in his crease, Josh Davey was struck effortlessly down the ground. A wide later came a charge and a loft over cover. The over cost 26, George Linde also helping himself to a four and a six.Related

Then came Green’s punishment. Tom Abell deployed more protection for the leg-side perimeter than is seen at many top-flight football matches. It mattered not: three times the ball sailed towards the Fan Zone with 47 off overs 18 and 19.Cox first came to the attention of those outside Canterbury and its surrounds in 2020. A 423-run stand with Jack Leaning saw Cox make an unbeaten 238 from 570 balls (with 50 boundaries). Not out overnight, Cox had spent the morning warm-ups asking each team-mate for details of their respective first-class bests. He also informed them they would be surpassed, and in several cases that came true. Swagger then, but also the goods to back it up.The Cox drop was not the only catch Somerset shelled. It was a rare off night in the field for them. Overton, usually with hats like buckets, found a hole in them and gifted Alex Blake six. When the following delivery was rifled towards the Taunton flyover, Overton avoided Davey’s gaze. Then redemption: Blake smashed in Overton’s direction again. Only fools make the same mistake twice.Kent’s start was stodgy, just 13 taken in the opening trio by Joe Denly and Tawanda Muyeye as both struggled to circumnavigate fielders. Then came Overton and Denly hit him over the top. Next, Muyeye performed an audacious flick over his head for six. Overton’s nostrils flared. But Muyeye immediately drove straight at Abell. Out wandered Grant Stewart and, having miscued one straight up, he was caught by Roelof van der Merwe.Denly and Cox were steady but struggled for fluency. Even so, on a small ground they ticked over nicely enough. They had added 89 for the third wicket when Overton returned. Abell regularly turns to his leading man when a partnership needs breaking and break it he did with Denly on 41 off 36 balls.Overton now has 35 T20 wickets for Somerset since 2019 began and 25 of those have seen off top-three batters. Oddly neither he, nor Gregory completed their spells.Post-interval Smeed took just two off Fred Klaasen’s opener. Unused to being tied down, Smeed eyed up cow corner and was bowled off his back thigh pad by Linde. An over later, Klaassen had his 50th T20 victim for Kent, Banton edging behind having just hit back-to-back boundaries. Then the big one. And it was a gamble from Sam Billings who threw Leaning the ball in over four. Rossouw – who had scored six from his first ball from Linde – swept, missed and was done. A cursory glance back at the stumps only reconfirmed that they had shattered. From there it was a near impossible task. Abell made a typically brisk 43. When he fell, van der Merwe wandered out. Surely, he couldn’t do it twice in a row? An unbeaten 48 from just 15 balls to win Thursday’s west country derby remained fresh in the memory. No. It was not for lack of trying though. There was still time for another Overton moment. Leaning felt he had fairly caught Green on the boundary off Matt Milnes. Umpire Hassan Adnan shot across to his colleague Russell Warren to suggest Leaning had crossed the line. Overton almost did in remonstrating with Billings, before signalling six much to the crowd’s delight. Eventually, Green stayed put and six was indeed added.Billings later thought he had caught Green off Stewart but Green was given not-out and again Overton gesticulated with his bat. Later in the same over, an Overton top-edge went up and up and Billings covered much ground to claim the catch, before shushing the crowd.Green ended with 40 from 28 but the final ten overs were simply going through the motions as Kent claimed an emphatic victory, the wickets shared: Klaassen, Linde and Stewart each with two.

Forget Elliott: Slot must sell 6/10 dud who’s "not a Liverpool player"

Liverpool advanced to the fourth round of the FA Cup with a comprehensive 4-0 victory over lowly Accrington Stanley, with Arne Slot tasting victory for the first time in 2025.

While the Reds have been imperious in their performances this season, a Premier League draw against Manchester United preceded a miserable first-leg defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in their Carabao Cup semi-final tie.

To have been stumped once again at Anfield this afternoon would have been a calamity, but Slot’s much-changed side still needed to overcome their opponent’s physicality and get the job done.

Trent celebrates scoring against Accrington Stanley

It was a big opportunity for some. Rio Ngumoha, 16, showed his precocious quality, but it was Harvey Elliott who was perhaps the biggest winner on the afternoon.

Harvey Elliott stakes his claim

Accrington Stanley might be struggling in League Two, but there’s something about the FA Cup, it ekes out quality unknown to those lower-down outfits when pitted against giants.

But Elliott placated the giant-killing beast, with The Athletic’s James Pearce hailing the 21-year-old’s “brilliant” performance. It’s been a tough campaign for the playmaker, fracturing his foot in September and thus languishing on the fringes of the Slot project.

Elliott’s role has been so peripheral that he’s been at the centre of transfer rumours linking him with Brighton & Hove Albion and even Borussia Dortmund in Germany. In fairness, if he doesn’t earn opportunities, the diminutive ace will be justified in wishing to move away, such is his immense talent.

Trent Alexander-Arnold

Liverpool have to keep him on the books, allowing him to bloom under Slot’s wing. The same, however, can’t be said for Darwin Nunez, who must be sweating over his place after another performance that left plenty to be desired.

Why Slot must sell Darwin Nunez

Nunez continues to frustrate. He missed two great opportunities this afternoon while showcasing the drive and tenacity that speaks of his ambition and determination to succeed in a Liverpool shirt.

Indeed, club legend Robbie Fowler even claimed that the more he watches the former Benfica man, the more he believes the striker is “not a Liverpool player”.

The problem, however, is that Nunez is failing to prove himself as the centre-forward that Slot’s system needs. The Liverpool Echo’s Ian Doyle gave him a 6/10 match rating, acknowledging his endeavour and work in setting up Diogo Jota’s opening goal, but is it enough?

That’s now four goals and four assists apiece across 26 appearances this season, marking a regression in output since Jurgen Klopp left Merseyside.

While FSG have more pressing transfer priorities, there’s no question that the din surrounding Nunez’s place in the team is getting louder and louder, especially with recent reports revealing that the Uruguayan has been informed that he needs to improve, lest he be formally transfer-listed and focus be placed on buying a successor.

It may have already started. As per Football Insider, sporting director Richard Hughes would consider accepting bids in the £60m ballpark for Liverpool’s record signing.

Darwin Nunez

The 25-year-old won’t want this to happen, will be desperate to prove his worth. That said, Jota scored and Chiesa opened his account for the club after an injury-hit start to his Liverpool career. Might he be in the process of leapfrogging his fellow frontliner?

Liverpool will surely feel that they can do better, and must seek to cash in on Nunez for the best price possible.

Alice Davidson-Richards seizes day that she always hoped would come again

Debutant feels ‘bloody brilliant’ after starring alongside former school captain

“Bloody brilliant” is how it feels to score a century on your Test debut, in case you were wondering. Just ask Alice Davidson-Richards.One of four players in the England XI making her Test debut, Davidson-Richards, a 28-year-old allrounder, scored 107 and shared a 207-run stand for the sixth wicket with Nat Sciver, which was poignant for many reasons.Sciver, nearly two years her senior, captained Davidson-Richards in their school cricket team at Epsom College, where they also played hockey and netball together before they joined the England set-up and shared car journeys to training.”It means quite a lot having Nat there,” Davidson-Richards said as the pair faced the media after rescuing their side from 121 for 5 and securing a 44-run lead on the second day of the Test with South Africa in Taunton, Sciver still unbeaten on 119 at the close.”When we started driving up to Loughborough together however many years ago, to being out there playing a Test match together is really, really special.”But then their international careers diverged. Davidson-Richards played one ODI and five T20Is, all in 2018, and that was that until her recall for this match. Sciver, meanwhile, is playing her eighth Test and has 180 white-ball internationals to her name, including a pivotal role in England’s World Cup campaign earlier this year when they finished runners-up.Asked whether she thought her international career had been over, Davidson-Richards said: “I don’t think completely.””I’ve always had like a deep-rooted faith in how good I could be and it was just knowing how to get there,” she added. “And everything that’s happened before has allowed me to get to here so I’m absolutely fine with everything that’s happened before, to be the player that I am now and the person I am now.Related

Centuries to Nat Sciver and Alice Davidson-Richards put England back in front

“It stopped being at the forefront of my mind and ended up being, if I can be the best player I can be for the South East Stars and doing it that way, then everything else on top of that is a plus.”Davidson-Richards has also stuck around long enough to be part of England’s newly professionalised domestic structure. She is one of South East Stars’ six contracted players and plays for Northern Superchargers in the Hundred. She has also made a mental shift that has proven invaluable.”I’m a lot nicer to myself to be honest,” said Davidson-Richards, who took also took a wicket in South Africa’s innings. “I put a lot less on myself doing well all the time.”It’s a more well-rounded approach: ‘How can I help the team?’ Rather than, ‘have I done well, or not done well?’ And I think that’s something that really brings out the best in me and that enjoyment side as well is a big factor for me.””Some of it’s just getting old, not that 28 is old, but I’ve been told that I’m old a few times,” she laughed as Sciver rolled her eyes in jest. “So I think it’s a little bit of that. I’ve definitely talked to some of the coaches back at home and not necessarily a sports psych but I just talk to friends, people, who have helped me on through.”Davidson-Richards saw Sciver to her fifty while facing 45 balls for her first nine runs. But she ended up unleashing 17 fours on the way to her 107 which ended on what turned out to be the last ball of the day when she sent a Tumi Sekhukhune delivery to Lizelle Lee at backward point.Sciver, meanwhile, rated her maiden Test century as “definitely up there” with her five ODI hundreds, including two unbeaten centuries against Australia at the World Cup in April, one of those in the final as England finished runners-up.”For it to be in a Test match is really very special – a format we don’t get to play much of but one that I love so I’m really happy,” Sciver said.It also sweetened her involvement in Heather Knight’s run out for just 8 on the first ball after lunch. Knight’s dive was in vain after Sciver worked Nadine de Klerk towards square leg and called for a single but then the slightest of hesitations mid-run from both of them found Knight short of her ground as Sekhukhune fired the ball to wicketkeeper Sinalo Jafta.”I was feeling very guilty,” Sciver said. “It was a bit of hesitation from everyone. I did say, ‘yes’. But she has forgiven me, apparently,” she added with a smile. “If I didn’t get to a hundred, maybe she wouldn’t have forgiven me.”

Brighton to battle with German giants Bayern Munich for £68m "elite talent"

Brighton & Hove Albion are set to battle it out with German giants Bayern Munich for a young player who has been described as an “elite talent”, according to a new report.

Brighton latest news

After a worrying run of no wins in eight Premier League games, Brighton are now back to winning ways having taken six points from their last two matches. The Seagulls first beat struggling Ipswich Town 2-0 at Portman Road, before they then thumped Manchester United 3-1 at the weekend.

Yankuba Minteh, Kaoru Mitoma and Georginio Rutter were all on the scoresheet in a comprehensive win for Fabian Hurzeler’s side, which the German manager described as “a good game for us”.

Brighton & Hove Albion manager Fabian Hurzeler shakes hands with CarlosBaleba

“After the first goal we got a bit passive but after they scored we dominated and controlled the game,” he said after the match. “We deserved to win. We changed some small margins at half-time which made us stronger and of course we had some great individual quality on the pitch. It’s all about how intense you press and stay in your structure and we did that well.”

On his side finally turning draws into wins again, Hurlezer said: “In the Premier League every game is competitive and unpredictable.

“You have to work for the momentum you make and in the last two games and in the FA Cup game we’ve had that belief. If you can outwork an opponent then you can outplay them and I’m happy that we’ve been able to do that in the recent games.”

Brighton to battle Bayern for Diomande

Despite being ninth in the Premier League table, Hurzeler still reportedly wants to add some new players to his squad in the January transfer window. According to Tipsbladet, per Sports Witness, one of those is Sporting CP defender Ousmane Diomande.

The 21-year-old centre-back has been a regular for Sporting since joining them from Danish side FC Midtjylland in 2023, making 80 appearances and scoring four goals.

Tipsbladet claim that Brighton are set to battle none other than Bayern Munich for the signature of the Ivory Coast international, with both clubs having already made contact with Sporting about a potential move.

The Portuguese club, however, are insisting that Diomande’s £68 million release clause must be activated if he’s to leave the Estádio José Alvalade this month.

Sporting CP's Daniel Braganca reacts withOusmaneDiomandeafter being substituted

Diomande, who was signed by Sporting while the now Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim was in charge, has previously been described by football talent scout Jacek Kulig as an “elite talent”.

“You rarely see a player with such high ball-playing and pure defender skills,” Kulig wrote on X of Diomande. “There are some tactical improvements but I’m quite sure this kid will play for the best teams in the world.”

The defender’s former Ivory Coast boss Jean-Louis Gasset has also heaped similar praise on him, saying, according to the Express: “He’s one of the 25 best under-19 central defenders in the world and he does everything well. He plays in Portugal, he’s going to play in top leagues, he’s going to play in the Champions League or the Europa League.”

Steven Croft, Rob Jones set up Lancashire's comeback win

Unbroken 154-run stand leads recovery after Alex Thomson’s early strikes

Steven Croft resurrected Lancashire with 87 not out•Getty Images

Steven Croft and Rob Jones put on a record-breaking, unbroken 154 to set up a 39-run victory for Lancashire over Derbyshire in the Royal London Cup match at Emirates Old Trafford.Croft made an unbeaten 87 and Jones was 70 not out as the home side recovered from 67 for 4 to post 221 for 4 in their fifty overs.Despite a resolute innings from Shan Masood, who was last out for 82, that proved too many for Derbyshire on a sluggish pitch and the visitors were dismissed for 182, Will Williams taking career-best List A figures of 4 for 20Lancashire’s openers got off to a slow start, scoring only 31 runs off the first ten overs of their innings as Sam Conners and Ben Aitchison maintained a tight line and length. Conners also took the first wicket when he had the in-form Luke Wells caught behind by Brooke Guest for seven but Keaton Jennings and Josh Bohannon then put on 36 before Alex Thomson took three wickets in 13 balls. With his third ball the offspinner had Bohannon leg before wicket for 15 when the Lancastrian played across the line and he followed that four overs later by removing Jennings and Washington Sundar.Having made 33, Jennings effectively yorked himself when he came forward and played over the top of a full-length delivery from Thomson and Washington drove his first ball straight to mid-off where Billy Godleman took a two-handed catch above his head.Related

That left Lancashire on 67 for 4 in the 21st over but the Derbyshire bowlers enjoyed no further successes as Croft and Jones blunted Godleman’s attack before settling for modest acceleration on a pitch unsuited to fast scoring.Croft passed his half-century in 73 balls with four fours and Jones reached the same mark off 71 deliveries after hitting a solitary four. However, the pair scored 40 runs off the last six overs and in the process they broke Lancashire’s fifth-wicket record in List A cricket, the previous mark of 128 being held jointly by Mike Atkinson and Mike Watkinson vs Oxfordshire at Christ Church, Oxford in 1992 and Jason Gallian and Neil Fairbrother vs Leicestershire at Grace Road in 1997.The most successful Derbyshire bowler was Thomson, who took 3 for 25 from five overs, but Mark Watt conceded only 33 runs from his ten overs and Conners took one wicket for 41 from ten overs, two of which were bowled at the death. The visitors’ pursuit of 222 began as badly as their hosts had done. In the fifth over, Luis Reece was caught at deep square leg for 17 by the substitute fielder George Bell off Williams and six balls later Liam Hurt brought one back off the seam to bowl Godleman for one.Harry Came was perhaps unfortunate to be given out caught down the leg side for a single but when Brooke Guest chipped Washington to Croft at midwicket, Derbyshire were 53 for 4 after 16 overs.Masood and Anuj Daj then began much the same work of repair as Croft and Jones had accomplished for Lancashire and at the halfway point of their innings the visitors were 89 for four, two runs better off than Lancashire at the same stage.Although, Dal played on to Hurt for 15 in the 27th over, Mattie McKiernan helped Masood add 48 in 12 overs to keep Derbyshire in the hunt. McKiernan was leg before to Williams for 27 and Thomson caught and bowled by Wells for 2 to leave Derbyshire needing 76 off the last ten overs.Jack Morley, who finished with 1 for 37, and Washington took further wickets and the game ended when Masood holed out on the deep midwicket boundary, Jones taking the low, diving catch off Williams when 22 balls remained in the game.
