Freedman hoping to sign "great" prospect who’s wowed Crystal Palace scouts

In dire need of reinforcements following such a disappointing start to the season, Dougie Freedman is now reportedly plotting a move to sign an attacking addition for Crystal Palace.

Crystal Palace transfer news

Those at Selhurst Park had a mixed summer transfer window. Whilst they managed to welcome the likes of Eddie Nketiah and Maxence Lacroix, they were only able to fund those deals after both Michael Olise and Joachim Andersen swapped South London for Bayern Munich and Fulham respectively.

And so far, Oliver Glasner’s side have felt that impact in full, having failed to win once in their opening seven Premier League games.

He's outperforming Mateta: Crystal Palace missed out on the "perfect" CF

Palace nearly signed player described as “perfect” back in 2023

ByConnor Holden Oct 9, 2024

Their latest defeat came at the hands of league-leaders Liverpool, who battled past the Eagles to win 1-0 and pile the pressure on winless Palace and manager Glasner.

Sitting on just three points and inside the relegation zone, it’s certainly not been the opening that the former Eintracht Frankfurt boss would have wanted after such an excellent start to his tenure in the second-half of last season. But things could yet change with the help of the transfer window in 2025.

According to GiveMeSport, sporting director Dougie Freedman is now plotting a move to sign Dario Osorio from Midtjylland after Crystal Palace officials were impressed by the Chilean right-winger.

That said, the South London side aren’t the only ones interested, with both Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United reportedly eyeing moves for the 20-year-old who has earned comparisons with Angel Di Maria.

In a move that could replace Olise once and for all, Palace would be making quite the statement by also beating both Spurs and Manchester United to Osorio’s signature. A man in-demand, Osorio will be one to watch when 2025 arrives.

"Great" Osorio could finally replace Olise

Whilst Ismaila Sarr was supposed to take up the responsibility of replacing Olise’s quality, it remains to be seen whether the former Watford star will rediscover his best form at Selhurst Park, leaving the door ajar for Osorio. So far this season, the young winger has only shown glimpses of what he’s capable of, with three goals and one assist in 16 appearances, but last season’s numbers highlighted what he’s capable of at his best.

With nine goals and two assists in 16 appearances last season, Osorio attracted plenty of interest which has only continued into the current campaign. So much so that Midtjylland chief Ove Pederson was forced to speak about the interest, saying via TeamTalk in the summer: “You will understand that we cannot comment on possible offers for our players.

“We cannot advance anything. Simply put, this is not the way we work. I can only tell you that Dario Osorio is a great player and has had a great season.”

Battling some of the Premier League’s top sides, Crystal Palace will be desperate to win the race to sign Osorio and perhaps finally find their replacement for Olise when 2025 arrives.

Desperate West Indies and Bangladesh seek first win in Super 12s

Batting has let West Indies down in both matches, while Bangladesh will need an all-round show to post victory

Big PictureComing off two defeats in as many matches, both West Indies and Bangladesh will be aiming to open their account in the Super 12s of the T20 World Cup when they meet in Sharjah on Friday. Bangladesh and West Indies are currently placed fifth and sixth respectively in Group A, and they have to get over their losses quickly if they are to advance to the semi-finals.Batting has been a concern for both teams. After their batting blow-out in the first match against England, West Indies bettered their 55 by 88 runs against South Africa. However, that was also not enough to notch up a win. In a line-up consisting of Chris Gayle, Nicholas Pooran, Shimron Hetmyer, Kieron Pollard, Andre Russell and Dwayne Bravo in the middle order, Lendl Simmons’ 16 off 35 against England hurt the team and gave others little time to recover. Though captain Kieron Pollard did not blame Simmons alone for West Indies’ batting meltdown, he admitted that the team have to bat as a unit to move up in the points table.Related

Bangladesh bungle with match-ups obsession

For Bangladesh, they need to fire in all departments. Despite posting a competitive total of 171 for 4 against Sri Lanka, they lost the game due to sloppy fielding and poor bowling. In the second game, Bangladesh toiled against England with both and ball as they lost the match by eight wickets after posting a below-par 124 for 9. VAR decisions table: Liverpool 6th, Arsenal miles behind, Wolves dead last

Wolverhampton Wanderers come in last for overturned VAR decisions in the Premier League since it was introduced five years ago. It has so far been a frustrating campaign for the Midlands side, as they are yet to win in the league, sitting joint bottom of the table with one point, and those frustrations only increased as Wolves were on the end of a controversial VAR decision on Sunday against Manchester City.

Wolves fans spot new Chris Kavanagh mistake before Man City's goal (Video)

Wolves fans will be even more furious with Sunday’s defeat to Man City after seeing this incident.

ByBrett Worthington Oct 21, 2024 Controversial VAR decisions continue

There were a few incidents over the weekend involving VAR that have left supporters unhappy. One of them being Arsenal, as they saw defender William Saliba sent off in their clash against AFC Bournemouth for a tackle that Gunners believe was very similar to what Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo did against Liverpool and escaped punishment.

Wolves were also once again on the end of a decision that looks to be a controversial one, as Man City’s John Stones headed home a winner in injury time after the goal was originally ruled out for offside because of Bernado Silva. However, the goal was given by referee Chris Kavanagh, a decision that Gary O’Neil believes shows there “could be an unconscious bias” towards the bigger Premier League teams.

O’Neil said after the game: “I can categorically tell you they don’t mean to. They are 100 percent honest. I just know, from a human point of view, it’s tough. I feel different playing Manchester City than someone else in the Carabao Cup first round. I’m sure they feel it; they are human. I don’t know if I’m miles off; it just feels there could be.”

That has now resulted in the FA contacting O’Neil over his comments he made, but a table of overturned VAR decisions has now emerged, ranking Wolves dead last with -20 out of the teams who have been in the top flight continually since its introduction. They are 23 worse off than rivals Aston Villa and 25 behind Sunday’s opponents Man City, with West Ham being the next worst of teams with -7.

This table from ESPN editor Dale Johnson is a pure ranking of VAR overturns, so while it does not suggest whether any amount of the decisions were ultimately right/wrong, the sheer disparity to the rest of the league will ignite the fury of Wolves supporters and O’Neil.

The worst VAR decisions against Wolves

The VAR table isn’t pretty reading for Wolves and their supporters, and while all 20 of those overturns will not be wrong, it’s fair to say a few have caused justified anger. Of course, the most recent was Sunday’s goal for Man City, where it was judged that Bernado Silva was not obstructing the goalkeeper in an offside position.

However, last season, Wolves scored a very similar goal against West Ham United, and as you can see below, the goal was eventually ruled out, as a Wolves player was deemed to be blocking the goalkeeper in an offside position.

Another decision that the Midlands side faced was against rivals Villa last season, as they conceded a penalty in a situation where it looked as though Ollie Watkins ran into goalkeeper Jose Sa as he tried to catch the ball.

Perhaps the most memorable call that Wolves did not get was against Manchester United last season, as goalkeeper Andre Onana came out and clattered Sasa Kalajdzic in the box in the final moments of a 1-0 United win.

Verdão abre 2 a 0 cedo e quase goleia no primeiro tempo

Ange can silence Osimhen by unleashing "world-class" Spurs star

It’s been an interesting season for Tottenham Hotspur so far this year.

Ange Postecoglou’s side have played some of the most entertaining football in the Premier League this season and have picked up some big wins along the way, like the ones against Manchester United and Aston Villa, but slip-ups against the likes of Brighton & Hove Albion and Crystal Palace see them remain out of the top four at present.

However, where the North Londoners have been inconsistent in the league, they have been exemplary and remain undefeated in both the League Cup and Europa League.

In fact, the Lilywhites are second out of 36 teams in the latter, and with that, they can afford to rest a few players for the game against Galatasaray tonight, especially as one of the stars Postecoglou should start is more than good enough to help shut down Victor Osimhen.

Why Postecoglou should rest starters

Okay, there is certainly an argument to be made that, given the strength of Galatasaray and the intimidation factor their stadium can provide, Postecoglou should be looking to start his absolute strongest lineup tonight.

However, there are a couple of reasons why this might not be necessary or the best idea, with the first being quite obvious: injuries.

The club’s campaign was utterly derailed by a rash of unfortunate injuries around this time last year, and given how injury-prone the likes of Micky van de Ven, James Maddison, and Rodrigo Bentancur seem to be, it feels unwise to risk them tonight, especially when there is a potential banana skin waiting for the team on Saturday in the guise of Ipswich Town.

Micky van de Ven withdrawn due to injury

The second reason is that tonight’s game is the perfect opportunity to hand out more game time to those who might not start every week and to put them into what could be the most hostile environment of the season to test their mettle.

Moreover, as we saw against Manchester City and in the game against Aston Villa, the players outside of Postecoglou’s first-choice XI are good enough to make a difference in challenging games, and there is one player in particular who deserves to start, someone who could play a significant role in keeping Victor Osimhen quiet.

The Spurs ace who deserves to start against Galatasaray

As we said, several players deserve to start in Turkey tonight, but in this case, we are talking about Yves Bissouma in particular.

The Mali international has made ten appearances for Postecoglou this season, but in the last two games, he started on the bench, with Bentancur and Pape Matar Sarr the manager’s preferred midfielders to play alongside the incredible Dejan Kulusevski.

Yet, in both games, he came off the bench to play a significant role in two outstanding wins.

Against City, he played the entire second half and was a constant nuisance for the Champions’ attackers, earning himself a 9/10 match rating from LondonWorld’s Rahman Osman for his tireless defensive work and sensational goal-line clearance to deny Nico O’Reilly from grabbing an equaliser.

The “world-class” defensive midfielder, as dubbed by Sky Sports presenter Adam Smith, didn’t do anything quite as eye-catching in his 34 minutes of action against Villa, but was once again a constant throne in the opposition’s side.

He won 100% of his ground duels, made two clearances, one interception, one tackle, lost the ball just twice, maintained a passing accuracy of 100% and took 29 touches.

He was so effective that despite his relatively short time on the pitch, the Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick awarded him an 8/10 on the night, writing that he ‘impressed again off the bench, snapping into tackles and helping Spurs to win the midfield battle in the second half.’

So, with back-to-back brilliant displays off the bench against two of the best teams in England, it would be fair to say the former Brighton & Hove Albion star has more than earned a chance to start tonight’s Europa League clash.

Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma

Ultimately, if he can keep the likes of Phil Foden, Ollie Watkins, Bernardo Silva and Savinnho quiet in the space of a week, he should be able to handle Osimhen, who’s not been playing top opposition week in and week out this season.

JOGO QUENTE

OLHA A CHUVA!

DISPUTA INTENSA

Rory Burns looks to hit top gear with 'decent sort of experience' in Australia

England opener says he has “got a good picture” of how Australia’s quicks operate

While the return of Ben Stokes has been considered a huge boost to England’s chances of winning the Ashes, Rory Burns knows his role at the top of the order could hold the key to glory in Australia.Burns is part of England’s advanced squad that arrived in Australia on Saturday, while the rest of the contingent is in the UAE at the T20 World Cup. The group that touched down in Queensland is undergoing 14-day hotel quarantine but will get to train under strict biosecure protocols at the Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast during their quarantine period, with batting coach Graham Thorpe overseeing the squad as the head coach Chris Silverwood is in the UAE.Related

Root: Stokes will do everything he can to be ready for Ashes

Gabba no longer such a 'stronghold' for Australia, warns Root

England’s last two series triumphs in Australia, in 2010-11 and 1986-87, have been underpinned by superb batting displays from a senior opener. Alastair Cook piled up 766 runs in 2010-11, with three centuries, including 235 not out in Brisbane, and absorbed 1438 deliveries across five Test matches. Cook also made 244 not out at the MCG in 2017 in the only Test England haven’t lost in their last two series down under. Chris Broad also faced over 1000 deliveries in 1986-87, piling up three hundreds in England’s 2-1 series triumph. Michael Vaughan too scored three centuries on the unsuccessful 2002-03 Ashes tour.Burns knows he would need to produce something similar at the top if England were to regain the Ashes.”That’d be nice wouldn’t it,” Burns said from hotel quarantine on the Gold Coast. “Obviously, some good names on that list.”Generally, sides that do well, their top order performs, tries to get scores together as a team and a group, lets your middle order have the best use of conditions there as well.”Burns hasn’t toured Australia before with England or England Lions but has had three stints in Australia playing grade cricket in Adelaide and Sydney. He played alongside Australia’s Travis Head at Tea Tree Gully in Adelaide in 2012-13, where the pair shared a 154-run stand in a game. He also had stints at St George and Randwick-Petersham in Sydney, making centuries for both clubs, playing alongside Australia players Moises Henriques and Nathan Ellis.”I’ve got a decent sort of experience of conditions out here, playing grade cricket,” Burns said. “Got a T20 hundred [for Randwick], which is probably not the thing to bring up in this call, obviously, we’re looking at the red-ball format, but yeah, I did alright.”Obviously, the majority of places that I’ve toured in my career so far with England, I actually haven’t been to, so it’s nice that I’ve been here and I’ve got some experience of conditions out here.”Plans can start being formulated a fraction earlier. But it all depends where you go. I’ve never been to Brisbane or Queensland before, so wickets and surfaces change depending on where you are. It’s good to have some experience in Australia, but I’m trying not to formulate too many opinions off just that.”Burns has another connection within the Australia dressing room having worked closely with current Australia batting coach Michael Di Venuto at Surrey when Di Venuto was his head coach.”We spoke about batting a lot, you know, certain shots that you can or can’t play,” Burns said. “The way he set up, he was very much pull and cut and quite aggressive. So he’s given me a few snippets along the way, and I’m looking forward to catching up with him at some stage.”But the left-hand batter will draw more from his performances against Australia in the 2019 Ashes in England. In a torrid series for most of the openers on both sides, Burns stood tall, scoring a century at Edgbaston and two more half-centuries in the face of some high-quality bowling from Australia’s quicks, particularly Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood.”They’re very good operators,” Burns said. “They don’t give you a lot of bad stuff. And they’re pretty relentless when they get it right, and they obviously bowl at a good pace. For me, what I’d say I’d taken out of it is the fact that I’ve been able to see them, I’ve been able to play against them before. You know, I’ve got a sort of a good picture of how they operate. So it allows me to put my best sort of plan together and prep for them.”

O treinador, porém, justificou a mudança.
