New Zealand's wholesale changes show immense strength in depth

Unprecedented six changes also highlight WTC’s impact on international cricket

Matt Roller10-Jun-2021New Zealand have never previously made six changes to their side within a series and that they did so at Edgbaston and still managed to take seven wickets after being asked to bowl on a flat pitch was evidence of two things: firstly, unprecedented strength in depth within their Test squad, and secondly, the extent of the World Test Championship’s impact on international cricket.Tom Latham, their stand-in captain, insisted in his pre-match press conference that beating England was “higher on our priority list” than the WTC final, but that he was saying it in the first place was proof of the inverse: Kane Williamson was ruled out through elbow pain here but would surely be risked against India if he suffered the same ailment next week.Tim Southee, Kyle Jamieson and Colin de Grandhomme were all rotated out to manage their workloads ahead of the same fixture, and while BJ Watling’s stiff back and Mitchell Santner’s cut finger might well have caused them to miss out under any circumstances, the presence of ready-made replacements in Tom Blundell and Ajaz Patel and Trent Boult’s return meant only a limited drop-off in the quality of New Zealand’s side.Trent Boult celebrates with his team-mates after dismissing James Bracey•Getty Images

It has been clear for some time that the notion of teams knowing their ‘best XI’ is anachronistic in this era of international cricket but in the Covid era of enlarged squads, bubble fatigue, variety in conditions and a punishing schedule, squad depth is more relevant than ever. India proved as much during their improbable series win in Australia at the start of this year, and with New Zealand fielding 17 players across these two Tests, they are showing that the era of “Hadlee at one end, Ilford seconds at the other” is long gone. The only time a team has used more than that in a two-match series was when Sri Lanka rested seven players after an innings-and-196-run win against a struggling Bangladesh in 2002, which led Sanath Jayasuriya to complain he had never seen some of his new side before and drew the disapproval of the government’s sports minister – though they still won the second Test by 288 runs.It is no great surprise that depth at times has been an issue in a country of only five million people. In early 2020, injuries and illness forced them to make five changes for the third Test against Australia in Sydney; the result was a 279-run hammering to confirm a 3-0 series defeat, which seemed to confirm their over-reliance on a small core of senior players.Related

Zak Crawley shows England's batting woes in young line-up

But in the 18 months since, they have made strides forwards: Jamieson, Daryl Mitchell and Devon Conway have made fine starts to their respective careers, Blundell looks ready to take the gloves full-time once Watling retires, and Patel and Matt Henry have slotted in without fuss. The true test of depth will come tomorrow, when a batting line-up shorn of its linchpin comes up against England’s four seamers, but on a dry pitch with few obvious demons, it would be no surprise if they took a lead into the third day.”We knew there were some [injury] doubts, and we obviously always fall back on our squad,” Henry said at the close. “We’ve got a big squad here and everyone seems to have a good understanding of where they sit and experience as well. As a squad, we’re pretty confident and happy with what we have in the sheds. That’s what’s been the foundation of this squad: that depth, and trusting that when you come in, you know what your role is.”It was Patel who made the strongest case for retention in next week’s final on the first day, though Henry bowled better than his figures suggested – in keeping with the rest of his Test career – and Mitchell nagged away tirelessly on a length. While England had opted not to field a frontline spinner for the second Test in a row – and the fifth time since Chris Silverwood became head coach in late 2019 – Patel showed the benefits of picking one, providing the control that had eluded Santner at Lord’s as he conceded only 2.42 runs an over in a holding role.He made two important breakthroughs, too, ending stands of 42 and 47 when Ollie Pope edged behind and Olly Stone was pinned lbw on the sweep. Pitches at the Ageas Bowl are more spin-friendly than in the majority of England, and with India’s line-up dominated by right-handers, Patel’s ability to turn the ball away from the bat makes him a more persuasive option than a fifth seamer in next week’s final.Ajaz Patel made a strong case for retention•Getty Images

Furthermore, New Zealand’s willingness to make changes demonstrated the transformative effect that the WTC has had on Test cricket – for better or for worse. This series – which is not part of the Championship – has always been unusual, a late addition to an already-crowded schedule to thank broadcasters and host venues and provide New Zealand with preparation ahead of next week’s final, but the meeting of sides ranked No. 2 and No. 4 in the world can rarely have felt so much like a support act. With England’s multi-format players missing and New Zealand happy to rotate ahead of the main event, the fact there are no points at stake seems to have taken something away, even with a 17,000-strong Edgbaston crowd adding to the spectacle on Thursday. Much of the criticism of England’s final-day go-slow at Lord’s rested on the point that there was nothing to lose: while the WTC’s first cycle has struggled to spark much enthusiasm, it is becoming increasingly apparent that it is shaping teams’ approaches.

£100m+ Kevin De Bruyne successor who Pep loves now open to joining Man City

Manchester City have just received a big transfer boost in their pursuit of finding a successor to Kevin de Bruyne, according to a new report. The Blues are back in Premier League action this weekend as they welcome Brentford to the Etihad, and Pep Guardiola will be hoping his side can make it four wins from four.

Man City have already sold Alvarez 2.0, he's now outperforming Grealish

They sold him for double their money

ByJoe Nuttall Sep 8, 2024 Man City transfer news

Man City had a very quiet and uneventful summer transfer window, as they brought just two players to the club, with İlkay Gündoğan already a known entity as well, returning after a season at FC Barcelona.

The transfer window is now closed, but that isn’t stopping the transfer speculation from continuing. Midfielder Rodri has been linked with a move to Real Madrid in recent days, despite the fact that he still has three years left to run on his contract, and City are looking to tie him down to a new deal to fight off that interest.

Striker Erling Haaland is also being linked with a move to Madrid, with the European Champions keen on signing him at the end of this season. According to the report, Real Madrid are willing to pay the striker’s £19.5 million salary he earns at City now, as President Florentino Perez is a huge fan of the Norwegian and has made him one of their top targets for next summer.

It is claimed a clause in the striker's contract would allow him to leave the Premier League side for a reasonable price, but after a few worrying rumours in recent weeks, City have just been given a boost in their pursuit of a top signing.

£100m+ De Bruyne successor now open to joining Man City

According to Manchester City insider Tolmie’s Hairdoo on X, relayed by City Extra, Bayern Munich and Germany international Jamal Musiala is open to joining Man City in 2025. The report states that the 21-year-old has delayed contract talks with the German giants, which means he will have just one year remaining on his contract at the Allianz from next summer.

Despite that, Munich will still demand a hefty fee, looking to get at least £100 million for the youngster if a new deal cannot be agreed. This comes as Kevin de Bruyne is in the final year of his contract at the Etihad, and even though he has said talks will be held over a new deal, he won’t have long left at the top level.

City have been linked with a move for Musiala before now, with reports stating that Guardiola has been “dreaming” of signing the Germany international.

Filling the shoes of de Bruyne would be very difficult for Musiala, but both players have very similar backgrounds, with them both starring in the Bundesliga after struggling to break through in England as a youngster. The 21-year-old is still in the early stages of his career, but he isn’t that far behind the quality that de Bruyne shows week in and week out, as the pair are both excellent at creating chances for their teammates.

Fator casa!

Not just Gomes: Man Utd must activate buyback clause to re-sign amazing ace

There’s always a real sense of intrigue when a player chooses to fly the nest at Manchester United, with supporters no doubt torn between wishing the star well, while also hoping that his exit doesn’t come back to bite them.

In the case of Angel Gomes, for instance, the Red Devils will certainly be ruing letting him slip from their grasp back in 2020, with the Englishman leaving on a free after limited game time under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, having made just ten first-team appearances for the club in all competitions.

The youngest player to feature for the first team since Duncan Edwards after replacing Wayne Rooney at the age of just 16 and 263 days back in 2017, Gomes has since gone on to flourish in France, via a stint in Portugal, at Ligue 1 side Lille, culminating in a first senior England call-up last month.

Last season in the league, the 24-year-old created 15 ‘big chances’ and provided eight assists from his deep-lying midfield berth, with speculation rife that United are among the clubs who are eyeing a potential move for the diminutive playmaker next summer.

With less than 12 months to run on his existing deal, the 5 foot 6 sensation surely won’t be short of suitors, with the Red Devils plotting a potential Paul Pogba repeat in bringing back an asset they previously let go for nothing.

Paul-Pogba-Man-Utd-France

The one-time Boavista loanee may not be the only asset that INEOS could look to bring back to Old Trafford, however, with there another rising star who could be worthy of a second chance in the near future.

Man Utd have a chance to right a wrong

In cases like Pogba and Gomes, talented youngsters perhaps need to move on from the United bubble in order to flourish, allowing them the chance to gain regular game time away from the intense scrutiny that life in Manchester provides.

There is no harm in then plucking those talents once they have realised their potential elsewhere, however, with the club likely to be keeping a close watch on the likes of Willy Kambwala and Hannibal Mejbri in the coming years – two players who have buyback clauses in the deals that took them to Villarreal and Burnley, respectively.

The same could also be said of a certain Alvaro Fernandez, with the promising Spaniard having made the move to Benfica on an initial £5m deal over the summer after a six-month loan spell – a move that also includes a buyback (as well as a sell-on clause)

The 21-year-old departed after failing to make a first-team appearance for the club, with the towering left-back having arrived from Real Madrid as part of a trio of Spanish imports in the summer of 2020, alongside Marc Jurado (Barcelona) and Alejandro Garnacho (Atletico Madrid).

While Garnacho has since gone on to sparkle, both Jurado and Fernandez have fallen by the wayside, although after a bright start to life in Portugal, a return to United in the near future should be in store to help aid the club’s left-back woes.

Alvaro Fernandez's start at Benfica

Described as a “quality” player with an “amazing engine” by talent scout Jacek Kulig during his time in United’s youth ranks – where he notably made 47 U21 appearances, providing 14 goals and assists – the youngster notably sparkled during the 2022/23 campaign on loan at Preston North End.

That stint at Deepdale saw Fernandez register six assists in 42 games in all competitions as an illustration of his attacking prowess, having been hailed as “immaculate” by then-boss Ryan Lowe.

With Tyrell Malacia subsequently missing the entirety of last season through injury, and with Luke Shaw enduring his own stints on the sidelines, the hope was that Fernandez would come into the first-team picture.

Ultimately, however, he was sent on loan to Granada for the first half of the campaign, before joining his current side on an initial temporary deal in the winter window – even with Sergio Reguilon’s own loan having been cut short in January.

Yet again, United have been forced to start the new campaign without a recognised left-back, while the Spaniard has flourished again in Lisbon, notably averaging 1.8 key passes per game from his six outings in Liga Portugal in 2024/25. Only Amad Diallo (2.4) has bettered that return among those back at United in the Premier League.

He also impressed during his first Champions League start against FK Crvena zvezda last week, providing three key passes from his defensive berth in that 2-1 win, while also completing three of his five crosses.

The Spain U21 international remains rather raw, but at a time when Erik ten Hag’s side are so lacking in that left-sided department – with Harry Amass still also just 17 – he could well have been a worthy part of the Red Devils squad this season.

Thankfully, while the club have let him slip from their grasp, the inclusion of that buyback clause ensures that they could have first dibs over re-signing the 6 foot 1 ace in future, allowing Ten Hag and co the chance to rectify their mistake.

Roger Telemachus: South African cricket was controlled by a clique of white players

Former fast bowler says they were in part responsible for his exclusion from the XI at the 2007 World Cup

South African cricket was controlled by a clique of white players nicknamed “the big five,” according to former fast bowler Roger Telemachus. Testifying at the Social Justice and Nation-Building (SJN) hearings, Telemachus explained how the moniker was coined at the 2007 World Cup, where he was part of the squad but did not play a game.”That is where the big five started. They control selection. They control everything. They used to go to the coach and say this is how we are going to play. This is where we gave the name to these players,” Telemachus said.He did not name which players made up the clique but when asked to confirm its make-up, Telemachus said: “This is a group of white players.”This is not the first time a clique has been mentioned in South African cricket. Herschelle Gibbs wrote about a group of players who controlled the national team in his autobiography in 2010 and the recent and turbulent overhaul of Cricket South Africa (CSA) also included references to a small set of players wielding all the power.Related

Telemachus claimed the clique was partly responsible for his being reduced to a passenger at the World Cup 14 years ago, but he also indicated there was political interference.”A week before the semi-final I was told I will definitely be playing the semi-final. I asked the coach what was the reason and he said one of our fast bowlers has a niggle,” Telemachus said. “But before that, Makhaya Ntini was out of form and the day before, apparently, they (team management) got an email from CSA that the ANC (African National Congress, South Africa’s ruling party) are putting pressure on them because there are no black African cricketers in the team.”That is the reason why the coach came to me and said, ‘Sorry, this is the story, unfortunately you can’t play.’ He showed me the mail. My question to them was why can’t Roger Telemachus and Makhaya Ntini play together in the semi-final? No answers, nothing happened. I was left out. I called my family and told them I am going to play and they should watch out for me. And then I was told I wouldn’t play. I almost got physical with that coach. The assistant coach had to stop me. I was furious, I was hurt.”Incidentally, neither Telemachus nor Ntini played in that match against Australia, which South Africa lost by seven wickets.Ntini was dropped for the previous game against England and was not brought back into the team for the knockout match after struggling through the tournament. Telemachus had not played an ODI since September 2006, did not feature at the World Cup and never played again for South Africa. He claims he was given no explanation for why he was left out. “When I confronted them, they couldn’t give me answers. Even when we returned from West Indies I never got answers.”Asked how he thought the clique was formed, Telemachus said, “they were good friends off the cricket field, good friends on the cricket field, they had their social lives together, even when there weren’t tours. That was how they hooked up and discussed things.”While the SJN aims to provide a platform for those involved in cricket to recount historical incidents of racial discrimination, it is also looking at any continuing bias in the game today.Telemachus recently lost his position as coach of the Kwa-Zulu Natal provincial union to the Dolphins coach Imraan Khan. This has been the norm since the dissolution of the franchise system last summer. Franchise coaches are taking over at most of the bigger provincial teams. The Dolphins used to have two feeder teams linked to them – Kwa-Zulu Natal Coastal and Kwa-Zulu Natal Inland. The Inland team has appointed Michael Smith, the former head coach of Martizburg College. Telemachus, who has a Level 4 coaching certificate, took aim at the process South African teams use to appoint a coach, which he said was not based on credentials.”The appointment of the national coach is unfair,” he said. “The guy was never asked for an interview. He was appointed by the director of cricket (Graeme Smith). I’ve got no issues with Mark Boucher. I’ve got no issues with the guy who has been appointed KZN-Inland coach (Michael Smith). I have got issues with people who made these decisions.”The SJN hearings are due to run for the next two weeks after which transformation ombudsman Advocate Dumisa Ntsebeza, will produce a report and recommendations to CSA.

Adam Rossington's captain's innings lifts Northamptonshire from difficulty

Northamptonshire 232 for 5 (Rossington 66*) vs GloucestershireAdam Rossington’s unbeaten 66 rescued Northamptonshire as the LV= Insurance Championship returned on a grey, cool day at Bristol with the visitors making 232 for 5 having lost the toss.Northants were reduced to 147 for 5 before captain Rossington made his fourth half-century of the summer. He and Harry Gouldstone, who made 32 not out, took the visitors to an early close in steady shape, with 25 overs chalked off the day due to bad light.Rossington has grown as a batsman since being handed the Championship captaincy midway through the 2019 season and here was the latest of his captain’s innings. He drove Matt Taylor through cover and Tom Price past his left boot for early boundaries. Ben Charlesworth was pulled wide of long leg and Graeme van Buuren worked fine for four more, just after reaching a half-century in 58 deliveries.Further boundaries followed in what proved to be the day’s last action. He drove and edged Taylor between slip and gully and then, looking to whip to leg, saw a leading edge fall just short of the cordon. Perhaps the misjudgements gave the umpires encouragement to take the players off.Gouldstone was also very easy on the eye. A 20-year-old born in Kettering, he made his first-class debut in this fixture, abandoned after just one session due to Covid, a year ago. He appeared to have plenty of time as he punched Price off the back foot past point, worked Charlesworth through square leg and drove him through cover to raise the fifty partnership – perhaps the day’s best shot. With fixtures in Division Two and Three taking on the same context as juvenile contests at the same stage of the flat-racing season – prep for next summer and the chance to collect some prize money – performances like Gouldstone’s are essential to keep September relevant. In that regard, Gloucestershire had 21-year-old Price playing his fourth first-class match. He took the first two wickets – the prize scalp of Ricardo Vasconcelos, who edged a ball of tight line low to second slip for 37, and Luke Procter, who sent a skier back to the bowler trying to pull.Taylor also took two. Emilio Gay’s pleasant 44 ended lbw when he was struck in line but above the knee roll. Rob Keogh then shouldered arms but edged into his middle stump.
