Josh Philippe believes he’s batting as well as he ever has ahead of the BBL final at the SCG on Saturday, with his form earning him the Player of the Tournament title, but is eager to develop into an all-format player.Heading into the final Philippe is the second-highest scorer in the competition behind Alex Hales and has a chance of taking top spot with Hales’ Sydney Thunder side eliminated. Philippe pipped Hales and Jhye Richardson to the individual award with votes cast by the on-field umpires throughout the season.Since joining the Sydney Sixers for the 2018-19 season, having played one match for his home club Perth Scorchers, Philippe is the third-highest scorer in the BBL behind Marcus Stoinis and D’Arcy Short. This season’s tally of 499 runs has bettered his 487 from last season when he was a key figure in the Sixers’ title including a matchwinning innings in the final.Related

He praised the environment at the Sixers where he has formed a strong connection with coach Greg Shipperd and will speak to him even when not on duty in the BBL.”Playing under Greg Shipperd, he’s the most recognised coach in Australia, he’s been around forever and he’s been a massive help for my game,” he said. “He’s always been a phone call away even when I haven’t been in Sydney. He keeps it super simple and allows me to play with freedom.BBL Player of the Tournament voting

“Also, playing under Moises [Henriques], he’s no different. The way they let me play my game, almost like no-consequence cricket, it’s pretty special to go out there at bat feeling like I’m back by every player in the team and all the staff.”He also pinpointed his time at the IPL, where he played for Royal Challenge Bangalore, for helping fine-tune some technical aspects.”I feel like I’m hitting the ball better than ever,” he said. “Some of the technical stuff I’ve really tried to iron out the creases over the pre-season. Getting the opportunity to be over at the IPL, being around guys like AB de Villiers, Virat Kohli, guys like that, see how they go about their business and for me seeing how simple they take the game.”I’ve definitely tried to over-think less and just back my ability this season, the result doesn’t matter, I just try to play my way to the best of my ability.”While the IPL may have aided his T20 game, it has also meant no chance to build on a first-class career for Western Australia that is stalled on 19 games. He was in the UAE when the tournament was played in Adelaide earlier this season and with the next IPL scheduled for April, and the T20 tour of New Zealand straight after the BBL, it would appear unlikely he’ll get any Sheffield Shield cricket this season.”The dream as a kid, I’ve said it before, is to get a baggy green,” he said. “I definitely want to try and establish myself at first-class level as well. The dream would be to be considered as an all-format player. I definitely want to chip away and work my red-ball game. I just hope next season there’s an opportunity there for me.”In the shorter term, his international debut could come later this month in New Zealand where he has made a strong case to be at the top of the order alongside captain Aaron Finch. There are various wicketkeeping options in the squad with Matthew Wade and Ben McDermott also touring but not having the gloves wouldn’t be an issue.”I’ve fielded a lot in my career so it doesn’t worry me,” he said. “Whatever that role looks like I feel like I’ll be ready to take it with both hands.”

Virat Kohli on Ishant Sharma: '100 Tests for a fast bowler is as good as 150 Tests for a batsman'

“Very happy to see him enjoy his bowling over the last four-five years and really become that stalwart of the Indian fast-bowling group”

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Feb-2021

“To maintain his body so well, to play 100 Tests, this longevity is rare to see among the fast bowlers today,” Virat Kohli said of Ishant Sharma•BCCI

Virat Kohli kicked his sleeping room-mate, Ishant Sharma, out of the bed to inform him he had been selected for India. That was 15-odd years ago. Things haven’t changed much over time. To Sharma, the Ahmedabad Test starting Wednesday is just another Test; to Kohli, the fast bowler’s 100th is as good as the 150th for a batsman in modern cricket. On the eve of the Test, Kohli paid rich tribute to his “dear friend” and his attack’s spearhead.”I have known Ishant for many years now,” Kohli said. “He started playing state cricket with me from his first season onwards. We have been room-mates for many years in state cricket, in Ranji Trophy cricket. When he got selected for India, he was fast asleep in the afternoon, and I had to kick him off the bed and say you have been selected. And he wouldn’t believe me. That’s how far we go back.Related

Ishant on Perth, 2008: 'At 19 you don't plan. You just bowl'

Ishant – from unlucky workhorse to master quick

“I couldn’t be happier for him. Playing 100 Test matches as a fast bowler is no mean feat. Especially in our conditions where things get so difficult. But he persevered, he kept working hard. That’s been his essence from day one. Very hard-working guy, very honest about the game, about his ability, about what he brings to the table. Very self-assured.”Looking at Sharma’s top-notch performances in the last four-five years, it is easy to forget he spent a majority of his career as the workhorse of an incomplete attack with some ordinary figures. Sharma’s turnaround began when he learnt under Jason Gillespie at Sussex how to bowl fuller without sacrificing his pace. It also coincided with India managing a more complete attack, which meant Sharma was not so easy to see off. His best years have also coincided with Kohli’s captaincy.”I was most excited to work with him and really bring the best out of him as an attacking fast bowler,” Kohli said. “Something that clicked immediately [when I took up captaincy]. He knows my mindset. He knows me inside out. There is a big trust factor. I know him inside out. I know he will respond to advice, he knows I am going to listen to his plans as well. I think it has worked really well for both of us. Not just for him as a fast bowler, but for me as a captain to have that kind of experience and the kind of consistency he brings along with the attacking lines and lengths he bowls.”I have just been very, very happy to see him enjoy his bowling over the last four-five years and really become that stalwart of the Indian fast-bowling group. Couldn’t be happier for him. Really, really excited I am going to be present on the field when he plays his 100th game. To see the smile on his face and just run in and bowl will be great to watch for a dear friend of mine.”Kohli said he was in awe of Sharma’s conditioning, motivation and commitment. “To maintain his body so well, to play 100 Tests, this longevity is rare to see among the fast bowlers today. Sometimes you lose motivation too. He has the skill, mind you, to play the shorter formats. If he wanted, he could have improved his four-over and ten-over cricket and could easily be a regular in IPL and present a case for himself in one-day cricket. But he dedicated all his commitment and attention to Test cricket, prioritised it. To play 100 Tests for a fast bowler is as good as 150 Tests for a batsman. I hope he plays for many more years and inspires the next group of fast bowlers too.”Perhaps Sharma’s conditioning is too good for Kohli too, at least when you look at his full head of hair. “If you captain and wear helmets for a long time, you will also lose your hair,” Kohli joked. “If he bats for a long time, he will also lose his hair. Thankfully it doesn’t come down to that, and when it does his role is different.”

Boehly now working to sell "the future of Chelsea" after £21m signing

Chelsea are believed to closing in on a £16.8 million deal for Mike Penders from KRC Genk, who would spend the season back out on loan at the Jupiler Pro League side to aid his development, with Enzo Maresca and co also chasing a move for Gremio wonderkid Gabriel Mec (Ben Jacobs).

The two players would join Tosin Adarabioyo (Fulham), Omari Kellyman (Aston Villa), Renato Veiga (FC Basel), Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (Leicester City), Filip Jorgensen (Villarreal), Marc Guiu (Barcelona), Estevao Willian (Palmeiras), Caleb Wiley (Atlanta United) and Aaron Anselmino (Boca Juniors) in sealing moves to west London.

Jorgensen comes as one of the latest arrivals, putting pen to paper on a long-term seven-year contract after impressing as Villarreal's number-one shot-stopper over 37 appearances last season.

"This move is a dream come true," said Jorgensen (via BBC).

"I am very excited to have signed for Chelsea, one of the biggest clubs in the world. I can't wait to get to know everyone and to start playing with all my new teammates."

The Dane will come in and compete with Robert Sanchez for a starting place between the sticks, which will make for interesting viewing, but it comes as bad news for Serbia goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic.

The 24-year-old made 31 appearances in all competitions over 23/24, becoming Chelsea's temporary number one, but it is now believed Boehly and co are attempting to find him a new club.

Chelsea offer Petrovic out to new clubs in attempt to sell

According to GiveMeSport and journalist Ben Jacobs, Chelsea have offered Petrovic to Genoa and other clubs abroad, and he could well find himself sold before deadline day on 30th August – despite becoming Mauricio Pochettino's favourite last season.

Maresca's possession-heavy style means the Italian favours keepers who are adept at playing the ball out, with the £21 million Jorgensen and Sanchez more suited than Petrovic. Dusan Tadic called his fellow Serbian "the future of Chelsea" last year, but it now appears his future is far away from the club.

“Dorde is a great goalkeeper and a great talent and it’s very nice to see him play for Chelsea," said Tadic.

“I saw immediately in training what a great goalkeeper he is. He’s [also] a very good guy and professional. Actually I am not surprised [to see him play at Chelsea] because in the past we were also looking at him for Ajax. And I remember they asked me about him.

"He’s the future of Chelsea."

EXPERIÊNCIA NO EXTERIOR

Alzarri Joseph, the West Indies fast bowler, is to join Worcestershire as their overseas player for the opening weeks of the 2021 season.Joseph, who is currently playing against Sri Lanka in the first Test in Antigua, will fly into the UK from the Caribbean on April 4, and will be available to Worcestershire for their first seven County Championship fixtures. The ongoing Test is Joseph’s 15th, in which he has claimed 34 wickets, in addition to a further 54 in 34 ODIs. He was part of the West Indies squad that toured England during last summer’s bio-secure Test series, claiming three wickets in his two Test appearances at Southampton and Manchester.”I am thrilled to be joining Worcestershire for the early part of the summer,” Joseph said.”When I heard the club was interested in me, I had no hesitation in saying yes. The club has a strong squad with a nice balance of youth and experience, and I’m really looking forward to working with bowling coach Alan Richardson.”I would also like to thank Cricket West Indies for allowing me the opportunity to go and experience county cricket”Joseph, 24, first played for West Indies as a 19-year-old in 2016, having starred at that year’s Under-19 World Cup with 13 wickets in six games. His batting has become an increasingly valuable part of his game, with scores of 86 against New Zealand in Hamilton in December, and 82 versus Bangladesh in Dhaka in February, having been dismissed in single figures in his first 14 Test innings. His most spectacular moment to date, however, came at the IPL in 2019, when he claimed figures of 6 for 12 on debut for Mumbai Indians against Sunrisers Hyderabad – the best performance by a bowler in the competition’s history.”He is a quality performer, and we are delighted to have signed him for the best part of two months,” said Paul Pridgeon, Worcestershire Cricket Steering Group Chairman.”With it looking like Josh Tongue and Pat Brown may not be match fit for the start of the season, Alex Gidman [Head Coach] and Joe Leach [Club Captain] both felt they needed another seamer.”Alzarri is going to be available for seven matches and is an exciting prospect.”

£200k-per-week star prepared to leave Chelsea after message from Maresca

A £200,000-per-week member of the Chelsea squad is prepared to leave amid interest from Premier League champions Man City, and coming after a message from new head coach Enzo Maresca recently.

Players who could be next to leave Chelsea this summer

Midfielder Conor Gallagher's move to Atletico Madrid is now on standby, coming after the Blues' move for their striker, Samu Omorodion, collapsed due to rumoured contractual issues (Sky Sports).

Chelsea could now offer £150k-per-week ace with Lukaku to seal Osimhen deal

The Nigerian is back on their radar after failing to sign Omorodion.

1 ByEmilio Galantini Aug 13, 2024

Omorodion was meant to join Chelsea on a seven-year contract in a transfer worth around £35 million (Fabrizio Romano), which would've paved the way for Gallagher to complete his move to Atletico, but the transfer domino has ceased for now thanks to a breakdown in terms regarding the former.

Chelsea's midfielder has now been forced to fly back to London, despite completing his Atletico medical, with all the necessary documentation also completed.

As Chelsea open talks to sign Joao Felix as an Atletico alternative to Omorodion, and one who could re-open the door for Gallagher to make his La Liga move, there are still a host of other players expected to depart Stamford Bridge before deadline day.

Wantaway striker Romelu Lukaku has agreed a three-year deal to join Napoli, a transfer which will have a profound effect on Chelsea's potential deal for Victor Osimhen, as it is believed the two clubs could strike a deal for the latter to join Maresca and the former to reunite with Antonio Conte.

Uncertainty also surrounds the futures of goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, defender Trevoh Chalobah, midfielder Cesare Casadei and striker Armando Broja – who have all been linked with an exit in the past fortnight.

Romano has even claimed that £325,000-per-week winger Raheem Sterling will be allowed to leave Chelsea if Felix joins, despite the England winger knowing Maresca well from their time together at City.

Ben Chilwell prepared to leave Chelsea after Maresca message

According to TEAMtalk, another big-name Englishman who could opt to leave west London is left-back Ben Chilwell.

The £200,000-per-week defender was injured for large periods last season but did captain the club on many occasions. He unfortunately missed out on a place in Gareth Southgate's England squad for Euro 2024 due to his lack of action, and Chilwell has been linked with a Chelsea exit previously this summer.

Now, TT say Chilwell is prepared to leave Chelsea and Man City are considering whether to move in, coming after a press conference message from Maresca left a bitter taste in the 27-year-old's mouth regarding his suitability.

“The Chilly situation is a bit delicate," said Maresca.

“We are trying to find a solution for him in terms of a position. He probably needs a bit of time. By delicate I mean in terms of finding his best position, not in terms of [his future at the club].

“We want players that can perform at 100 percent in their positions. I am sure, for instance, Malo [Gusto] and Reece [James] can both do the work required of them in the next two-three days and they can both finish with more assists, or be more dangerous, than they were in the past. In that position, they are good enough to make ‘last passes’ or get some assists because their quality is very good.”

Chilwell has apparently taken a 'dim view' towards this suggestion that he doesn't have enough quality to start in his usual position, and it is a situation which Pep Guardiola's side are open to pouncing on. It is believed Chelsea would demand a minimum of £40 million to consider selling before deadline day.

Man Utd struck gold on "baller" worth way more than McTominay & Casemiro

The Premier League is back, and Manchester United got their campaign underway with a hard-fought win over Fulham, who caused them some real trouble last season.

Erik ten Hag's side may have only won the game 1-0, but they looked pretty good throughout the 90 minutes and gave the fans a reason to be hopeful ahead of a long ten months that'll hopefully end in Champions League qualification.

One of the best players in the first half was Casemiro, who showed why he could still be helpful for the team. Likewise, while he could be sold in the coming weeks, Scott McTominay came on for a late cameo and looked okay.

However, while they both looked perfectly fine in their time on the pitch, another starter has seen his valuation skyrocket past theirs'.

Casemiro and McTominay's valuation in 2024

So, based on recent reports, it does look as if McTominay's time at Old Trafford could be coming to an end, with Fulham particularly keen on bringing him to Craven Cottage this summer.

The West Londoners had a second offer rejected for the Scottish international earlier this month worth around £20m, but now it looks like they could come in with a third, improved offer.

However, Marco Silva's side are unwilling to match United's £30m valuation of the player, instead looking to seal the deal at around £25m, although whether the Red Devils are willing to accept that remains to be seen.

Some out there may question such a valuation on the 27-year-old's head, but given that he scored ten goals and provided three assists from 43 appearances last season, it seems more than fair.

Now, while the Lancaster-born ace has seen his stock rise slightly over the last year, his midfield partner, Casemiro, has seen his value plummet.

For example, he joined the three-time European champions for a whopping £70m in the summer of 2022, and while he enjoyed a stellar first season at the club, he struggled last year and, as a result, his valuation from Transfermarkt has plunged to just €20m, which converts to just £17m.

That might seem egregious for such a decorated player, but his fall from grace in the back half of last year was dramatic, with Jamie Carragher claiming that his "legs have gone", which was reportedly also the opinion of the club's coaching staff earlier this summer.

However, with all of that said, while Casemiro's value has plunged and McTominay's has risen, neither player is worth anywhere near as much as one of their young teammates.

Kobbie Mainoo's valuation in 2024

Of course, who else was it going to be? The young midfielder who has seen his valuation explode in the last year or so is 19-year-old Kobbie Mainoo.

According to Transfermarkt, the Stockport-born gem is now worth €55m, which converts to around £47m, meaning he is currently worth at least £17m more than McTominay and a massive £30m more than Casemiro.

There may be some people out there who believe this valuation is just too much for a player his age, but based on his performances over the last year or so and his importance to United and England, it's entirely justified.

For example, despite being so young, he made 32 first-team appearances for the Red Devils last season, in which he scored five goals and provided one assist, meaning he averaged a goal involvement once every 5.33 despite playing all of his games in central and defensive midfield.

Moreover, following his impressive showing at the Euros this summer, the "absolute baller", as dubbed by U23 scout Antonio Mango, already has nine senior England caps to his name, which is a glowing endorsement of his immense talent and sky-high potential.

Ultimately, while some may be surprised to see that Mainoo is already worth substantially more than some of his more senior teammates, they shouldn't be, especially as his valuation will keep soaring if he keeps performing at this level.
