Fee agreed, medical done: Newcastle will sign teenage gem ahead of Man Utd

Newcastle United have seemingly sealed two senior signings for Eddie Howe already this summer and PIF have also beaten Man Utd to a potential star in the making.

Newcastle transfer latest

The Magpies are already making preparations ahead of the 2024/25 season, and with the summer transfer window set to open, Howe has already admitted the club need to be “smart” with their business.

"I think with our current situation and the landscape of the financial position I am not sure we are able to recruit ready made elite players. The players you are trying to get across, I don't think we are in a position to do that and I don't think we were in a position to do that last year.

"So I think we have to be really smart with our recruitment. I think we have to be maybe different to some of the other clubs we are in and around. It is all about the individual player not what bracket they're in. And what they can do for us and how they can take the team or squad forward."

Two permanent signings already appear to be waiting in the wings, though. Lewis Hall’s loan move from Chelsea is set to become a full-time transfer, whereas Newcastle appear to have won the race to sign defender Lloyd Kelly on a free after he left AFC Bournemouth.

After Hall and Kelly, Newcastle appear to be targeting a new goalkeeper, with Burnley’s James Trafford a top target at St James’ Park. A cut-price move could also be on the cards for Leicester City forward Kelechi Iheanacho, and by the looks of things, the club have also won the race to sign a teenage gem ahead of a number of clubs.

Newcastle to sign teenage midfielder ahead of Man Utd

According to NUFC Blog, Newcastle are set to secure the signing of Chukwudi “CJ” Afumuzor from Portsmouth. Aged just 14, Afumuzor will go into Newcastle’s academy and has already completed a medical with the Magpies, with a fee being agreed with Portsmouth last month.

Aston Villa, Manchester United and Brighton & Hove Albion were also keen on Afumuzor, but it is Newcastle who have won the race after presenting the best offer.

Report: Newcastle make move to seal significant off-field appointment

Talks have accelerated over a move to St James’ Park.

ByHenry Jackson Jun 11, 2024

The teenager is described as a ‘combative midfielder who operates best as a No.8’. They add that Afumuzor, who already stands at 5ft 9, ‘has been praised for his engine, ball-winning qualities and ability to drive forward at opposition defences’, scoring more than 20 goals for Portsmouth’s youth teams last season.

He looks set to go into Newcastle’s U15 ranks next year, and who knows, in years to come, we could see him make the first team breakthrough at St James’ Park, with the report adding that Afumuzor will be ‘the first of many Academy signings set to arrive this summer’.

– Em função do calendário, praticamente diluímos o time.

Leicester could sign "outstanding" Vardy heir as first Potter signing

Leicester City will hope that they can consolidate themselves as a Premier League club again from next season onwards after the disaster of slipping down to the Championship was immediately rectified by going back up as second-tier champions.

Enzo Maresca is now gone from the Foxes hot seat after being the mastermind from the dug-out that steered the East Midlands side back up to the top flight, but that doesn't have to completely disorientate the newly promoted team, especially if Graham Potter walks in as the Italian's successor soon.

Named as the frontrunner for the King Power Stadium vacancy, the former Chelsea manager could well fancy the task of managing the Foxes, especially if recent developments surrounding a transfer embargo being lifted turn out to be true.

This could see a transfer spree occur off the back of the positive news, with a new striker potentially following Potter into the building.

Potter's first potential signing at the King Power

According to a report from Italian outlet GialloRossi.net last month, Leicester City hold an interest in AS Roma striker Tammy Abraham this summer, with a new development potentially piquing the interest of the Foxes even further.

Indeed, journalist Matt Law, writing for the Telegraph, further speculated about interest coming from the Premier League for the ex-Chelsea centre-forward earlier this week, with the likes of Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa all queueing up for his services, as his Serie A employers place a reasonable £20m price-tag above his head.

What Abraham could offer Leicester

It could be a risky capture by the newly promoted outfit, however, owing to Abraham only completing eight league games last season across an injury-ravaged campaign, but it could well be a signing that shows Leicester mean business after taking the Championship by storm to return to the top-flight.

Potter would also love the new addition of the 26-year-old striker to strengthen the Leicester ranks, if both faces do end up joining the East Midlands side, with Abdul Fatawu a potential teammate he could cause havoc with up-front.

Fatawu – who looks to be edging closer to a permanent switch to Leicester – could explode into life in the Premier League operating from an inside forward position next to Abraham.

He bagged seven goals in the Championship whilst on loan, with three of those coming in just one game against Southampton back in April.

Thus, the thought of the winger playing alongside a prolific striker – of which Leicester will need once 20-goal Jamie Vardy eventually departs – is a tantalising one indeed.

He could be a perfect Vardy heir when the seasoned striker hangs up his boots, alongside being a major upgrade on the likes of Patson Daka waiting in the wings as a reserve option to lead the line.

Abraham would give Potter another option he can use in his preferred 3-4-2-1 formation if he was to take over the reins at the King Power, with the lofty 6 foot 4 presence playing up top in this formation last time out when donning a Roma strip under Daniele De Rossi.

Abraham will aim to prove he's a Premier League calibre striker for the Foxes if a move comes to fruition, only finding himself 16 goals shy of Iheanacho's haul at the level already, and will act as his replacement if signed with the ex-Manchester City striker now allowed to leave for nothing.

He certainly showed himself to be a goal machine in Serie A, with 17 goals managed in his debut season when relocating. Writer Henry Winter even described him as being "outstanding" performing in Italy.

Abraham would be a superb signing but combining him with Potter would be of great benefit to Leicester, particularly when you consider he helped to make Brighton a distinguished top-flight outfit as boss.

Potter could find his next Dunk by reviving Leicester's £50k-p/w gem

Graham Potter could get even more out of this defender if appointed as Leicester City boss.

Leicestershire let Finals Day appearance slip as Samit Patel hauls Notts through

Nottinghamshire progress on higher Powerplay score after securing dramatic tie off last ball

Leicestershire let a golden opportunity slip through their grasp – literally as well as figuratively – to allow Nottinghamshire to book their place in a Vitality T20 Blast semi-final against Lancashire. With 17 runs required from the final seven balls, it seemed Leicestershire had held their nerve in a thrilling East Midlands derby. But then Arron Lilley, fielding at midwicket, made a fearsome mess of an apparently simple piece of ground fielding to concede four to Samit Patel when there should have been a single.Worse was to follow. After Patel had struck a six in the final over, two were required from the final ball to send Nottinghamshire through. When Imad Wasim could only mistime the ball to mid-on, it looked as if he would be limited to a single. But Dieter Klein failed to pick up the ball cleanly and allowed it to pass him by.With the scores finishing level, the winner was to be decided by the side who had lost fewer wickets. But when that, too, was equal, the qualifier was the score after the Powerplay overs. It meant Nottinghamshire qualified for Finals DayPerhaps those fielding errors were the result of pressure, perhaps they were the result of the ball having become slippery in the dew but for a Leicestershire side who had fought back from an awful start with the bat and had held their nerve admirably with the ball it was a bitterly disappointing way to let the game slip away.”We got away with that,” Dan Christian, the Nottinghamshire captain, admitted to Sky afterwards. It was hard to disagree.False startBy managing just 22 runs in the Powerplay, Leicestershire gave themselves a mountain to climb in the rest of the game. Perhaps surprised by a surface that offered impressive bounce and carry, they managed only one run from the first over and none at all from the third. It represented the fourth worst Powerplay performance by a team batting first in the competition this season. It wasn’t just the lack of runs, either. Leicestershire also lost two wickets in those first six overs and another from the first ball of the seventh. At 22 for 3, having only managed two boundaries, it looked as if this could be a one-sided encounter. They did stage something of a comeback. Harry Swindells and Colin Ackermann put on 66 in eight overs, including a spell where they hit 46 off four overs, and by taking 97 off the final 10 overs of the innings, they did give themselves a chance. But, bearing in mind the manner in which the result was decided, that slow start came back to haunt them.Hanging in thereLeicestershire’s bowlers didn’t deserve to be on the wrong side of this result. They were immaculate almost throughout. With seven bowlers used and only one of them – the unfortunate Lilley, who went for 14 from his only one – proving expensive, it might be harsh to pick out any of them in a performance that was characterised by its strength as a unit. But Gavin Griffiths, who was on a hat-trick after Ben Duckett lost his leg stump missing a heave across the line and Chris Nash was brilliantly caught after chipping to mid-on, and Will Davis, who came on for the 14th over and nailed his slower-balls nervelessly, were especially impressive among the seamers.Ackerman enjoyed a fine all-round performance, too. After contributing 43 with the bat, he claimed three wickets with his waspish offbreaks including the apparently key ones of Joe Clarke, who looked in sublime touch before mishitting one to long off, and Tom Moores, who looked as if he were taking his side to victory before he lost his off stump to one that gripped just enough to beat his stroke. But non one bowled better than left-arm spinner Callum Parkinson. Despite bowling his first three overs in the Powerplay, the spell only cost 17 runs. He then returned for the 15th over with Nottinghamshire desperate for quick runs and conceded just four more.More than that, though, he produced the ball of the night to account for Alex Hales. Pitching on leg stump, gripping and spinning past Hales’ bat, it hit middle stump and suggested that his brother Matt may not be the only international spinner in the family. It really was a lovely piece of bowling.Harry Swindells drives powerfully•Getty Images

Samit’s upThis must have been a frustrating season for Patel. Despite having represented England in all three formats of the game, he currently finds himself struggling to maintain a place in Nottinghamshire’s top seven and had faced only seven balls (and made a top score of 4 not out) in the competition before this game. But, aged 35 and a veteran of 287 games in this format, he showed his composure and his class here. Yes, he had some fortune with the fielding, for sure. But the six he hit from the fourth ball of the final over – a glorious drive that flew over long-off – must have been partially responsible for ratcheting up the pressure that resulted in Klein’s misfield.Even before that final over, there had been three fours and a sense that Patel knew that if he could take the game deep enough, if he could put some pressure back on Leicestershire, he would be giving his team a chance. Ultimately, he held his nerve and they didn’t.Giant-scaringWith no side having won this tournament as many times as Leicestershire, it probably sounds incongruous to suggest they were on the verge of a giant killing. But the last of their three victories, in 2011, came the last time they reached Finals Day. Only once since, in 2017, had they reached a quarter-final before this. They have a young side with only three internationals including Klein, who has represented Germany twice.Nottinghamshire, meanwhile, had six internationals in their side including two overseas players. It’s only a partially unfair joke to suggest their youth system has its base at Leicestershire Grace Road; it’s far from unusual for them to utilise their superior spending power to lure the best players away from Leicestershire: Stuart Broad, James Taylor and Harry Gurney among them. But though it is Notts who progress, and although you suspect this result will sting long into the winter, Leicestershire may feel they made their point rather eloquently in this game. They might not have any money, they might not have many big names and they might not have an especially lovely recent record. But with a fine team spirit, with some clever plans put in place by their enterprising coach, Paul Nixon, they showed once again that they are a team to be respected in this format, at least.

Liverpool could forget Gordon by signing "mind-blowing" £49m talent

Liverpool's summer transfer window is shaping up to be something of a puzzle. Where, exactly, do Liverpool need to strengthen? What, precisely, is Arne Slot's primary concern heading into his first term as Anfield's head coach?

The lion's share of the Reds supporters would cry for reinforcements in defence; Joel Matip's contract expired last month and Ibrahima Konate suffered a landslide in form at the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

Leny Yoro continues to present himself as a jewel waiting to be whipped from LOSC Lille but Liverpool, interested though they are, are resigned to Real Madrid winning that race.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

Klopp redesigned Liverpool's midfield last summer but there remains a feeling that a long-term star needs to be signed at No. 6. Whether such a player is welcomed by September comes down to options and the right opportunity.

But, of course, there's been a more notable kernel of the Merseyside outfit's focus over recent days. Indeed, recent reports have suggested that the Reds have been in the market for Anthony Gordon, but it wasn't to be.

Liverpool's interest in Anthony Gordon

It's been known for several months that Liverpool are interested in strengthening their flanks, though the right-hand side seems to be the more pressing concern, with Mohamed Salah entering the final year of his contract and little in the way of alternatives.

Mohamed Salah for Liverpool

However, that hasn't stopped rumours surfacing regarding Newcastle United's Gordon, who was actually offered to the Anfield side last weekend as Eddie Howe's outfit scrambled to stay in line with the Premier League's profit and sustainability (PSR) rules.

Reports suggested that Newcastle had canvassed an interesting proposal Liverpool's way, asking for cash plus centre-back Jarell Quansah for the England international's sale. Liverpool turned the offer down, never making an actual move for his signing.

The Magpies will probably now save their prized slices of silver, having placated PSR after selling Yankuba Minteh to Brighton & Hove Albion for £30m and cashing in on homegrown talent Eliott Anderson, who signed for Nottingham Forest for £35m.

Gordon alternatives

With the ex-Everton player unlikely to be moving back to Merseyside this summer, he does want to move to the club he grew up supporting, though Newcastle's £100m asking price is a steely deterrent.

Luckily, Liverpool have mapped out a list of alternatives, with Spain's Euro 2024 sensation Nico Williams on the shortlist. According to Caught Offside, Slot's side could turn to the Athletic Bilbao star this summer.

Williams is one of the hottest names on the block right now given his influential role in his nation's international campaign, and with a £49m release clause, it's no wonder so many top European teams have taken note.

Barcelona, Arsenal and Chelsea are among the rival suitors for the fleet-footed winger, so Liverpool will need to act with dispatch to get this one over the line.

What Nico Williams could bring to Liverpool

Pace, and lots of it. Williams is only 21 but he's enjoyed an emphatic introduction to his professional career, starring alongside his brother (Inaki, 30) in the Basque Country and ending Bilbao's 40-year wait for a trophy after defeating Mallorca in the Copa del Rey final in April.

Last season, the "mind-blowing" – as remarked by scout Antonio Mango – Spaniard scored eight goals across 37 matches in all competitions, though his haul of 19 assists highlights his staggering playmaking ability that derives from his blistering, ballsy style of play, barrelling forwards and splitting backlines asunder, stretching and dragging defenders out of position.

As per FBref – to underscore this point – Williams ranks among the top 2% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 7% for progressive carries and the top 6% for successful take-ons per 90.

Gordon, while we're on the topic, ranks only among the top 33% for progressive carries and the top 50% for successful take-ons per 90. He's fast, yes, but not with the same unceasing volume as his Basque-born counterpart.

It's no surprise that he has been described as a "pace demon" by podcaster Adam Keys, offering skills that would provide Liverpool with Gordon's package and more.

The Newcastle man has been hailed for his "unbelievable" 2023/24 campaign by his Tyneside teammate Bruno Guimaraes, who was gobsmacked by his attacking abilities, posting 12 goals and 11 assists last year and winning the club's Player of the Season award for his daring and dynamic performances.

As the table above shows, Williams is producing a rather almighty campaign with Spain at the ongoing Euros, proving to be a deadly wide attacking option with boxes of pace and a load of creative quality besides.

Is this isolated? A case of international tournament syndrome, where players eclipse expectations and play like prime Diego Maradona, garbed in their country's colours?

Perhaps not. Williams averaged 1.5 dribbles, 2.8 dribbles, 4.2 ball recoveries and 5.2 successful duels per game in La Liga last season.

He's shaping into quite the talented player, and given that he's available for a slice of the price that would be required to bring in Gordon, it's surely a no-brainer. Liverpool just need to beat off some of Europe's most illustrious outfits for his signature.

Warwickshire have sacked their head coach, Jim Troughton, after a review into their disappointing season. The club will begin a recruitment process to find a new head coach shortly. David Saker, currently bowling coach with Sri Lanka, is likely to be a strong contender. He lived near Birmingham when he was England’s bowling coach and has previously been linked with the role. It is also understood he has had contact with the club in recent weeks. Another former England bowling coach, Ottis Gibson, may well be another strong candidateIn the meantime, Paul Farbrace – Warwickshire’s director of sport – will oversee training when the players report back in mid-November. He will be supported by Graeme Welch (bowling coach), Tony Frost (batting coach) and Ian Westwood (second XI coach) who all retain their existing jobs.As revealed by ESPNcricinfo in September, Farbrace led a review into Warwickshire’s season following a disappointing campaign which saw the club finish without a win in their five Bob Willis Trophy matches and unable to qualify for the quarter-finals of the T20 Blast.ALSO READ: Farbrace leads Warwickshire review as club lines up fresh bloodSuch modest results were no aberration. Warwickshire were relegated in the County Championship at the end of Troughton’s first season as first-team coach (2017) and, while they won promotion the following year, they just survived in the top division in 2019 when they finished seventh. They also reached the final of the Blast in 2017, but finished bottom of the North Group in the One Day Cup that season and, in 2019, and failed to qualify for the knock-out stages in either white-ball competition. For a club with Warwickshire’s history and resources, that was deemed inadequate. There were mitigating factors. It is understood Troughton was encouraged to provide opportunities for younger players in 2020, in particular, so the likes of Jeetan Patel, Tim Ambrose and Ian Bell did not always feature. Equally, the last few seasons have seen experienced players such as Jonathan Trott, Keith Barker and Varun Chopra leave the club. In most cases, however, better management might have persuaded them to stay.More than that, Troughton may be thought of as the victim of a youth system that has delivered much less than might be anticipated in a region with a large population and strong club structure. In particular, the club has failed to harness the talent and enthusiasm of the local Asian community. It is an issue of which the current management are painfully aware and determined to rectify. The episode ends – for now, at least – Troughton’s long and generally highly successful career at the club spanning more than 30 years. Having played for the club from Under-11s level, he first came to prominence with an eye-catching innings which helped Warwickshire win the 2002 Benson and Hedges Cup final. He soon broke into the England ODI team (he played six ODIs in 2003) and was a member of the Warwickshire team which won the 2004 County Championship. By the time they won it again, in 2012, he was captain.Despite recent results, he remained a popular figure with players and supporters and offered a typically dignified statement in trying circumstances when his departure was announced.”It is with great sadness that I will be leaving the club I’ve loved since the age of 11,” Troughton said. “I cannot thank the players and my management team enough for their efforts and support over the last four years. They are a credit to the badge, and I hope they continue the important work of driving forwards performance and development and build on the important culture of this fantastic club.”I’d also like to thank the members for their support over my 20 years affiliated with Warwickshire CCC. You will always have a place in my heart.”

Tottenham consider Crystal Palace hijack with approach made for £11m forward

Tottenham are considering a hijack on Crystal Palace as they make an approach to sign one £11 million forward wanted by the Eagles.

Postecoglou calls for drastic change as Spurs work to back him

So far, Spurs have agreed to two major signings in the form of a loan extension for winger Timo Werner and a £40 million deal to sign English sensation Archie Gray from Leeds United.

The north Londoners have also shipped plenty of deadwood, with Eric Dier, Ivan Perisic, Ryan Sessegnon and Japhet Tanganga leaving upon the expiry of their Tottenham contracts. Joe Rodon joined Leeds in a £10 million permanent deal as well, helping to sweeten the deal for Gray, with Tottenham also agreeing to terminate Tanguy Ndombele's contract as the former club-record signing joins OGC Nice on a free transfer.

Tottenham are expected to make another attacking signing after Werner too, as the likes of Wolves winger Pedro Neto, Palace star Eberechi Eze and others become linked with N17 moves.

Club chairman Daniel Levy is ready to back Postecoglou in the coming weeks, according to various reports, and it is believed Spurs are even willing to pay the entirety of Eze's £60 million release clause in their pursuit of a new forward.

"We need change. Change has to happen," said Postecoglou on Spurs' summer transfer business.

"You can’t want to alter your course and expect the same people are going to be on that. It’s just not going to happen. We’ve had two windows and we’ve had some development of players, for sure, but when I say we’ve still got a long way to go, that’s what I’m talking about. It’s impossible to say you’re going to have drastic change and yet expect everyone to be on that journey.

"It’s not for the want of trying. It’s just that we’re going to play a certain way, we’re going to train a certain way and we’re going to have a certain mindset. And that’s not for everyone."

Another interesting player they've been linked with is former academy gem Marcus Edwards, and they could get him on the cheap. Portuguese newspaper Corriere de Manha recently claimed that Sporting value the winger at around £17 million, but Spurs' 35 per cent sell-on clause means that figure would come down to just £11 million if Postecoglou's side bid.

Tottenham consider hijacking Palace bid for Edwards

Football Insider have another update on the matter, and they claim Palace are readying their own bid for the 25-year-old.

However, Levy is still in the background, with FI writing that Tottenham could rival Palace in the race to sign Edwards and hijack Oliver Glasner's side – similarly to how they prised Gray from Brentford's clutches earlier this summer. Spurs have also made an approach by asking to be kept informed about the situation.

The Englishman racked up 15 goal contributions, six goals and nine assists specifically, in 44 appearances across all competitions last season. Edwards has been praised for his form at Sporting in flashes, and it is believed he is open to a Premier League return.
