Gil arrived at N17 with a lot of promise, with members of the press even calling him a "very, very exciting talent" and "potential star in the making" (David Cartlidge), however, he has failed to establish himself as a regular first-teamer under multiple head coaches since then.

Out of Tottenham's senior squad members, only the consistently injured Manor Solomon played fewer Premier League minutes than the Spaniard last season, and Gil refused to go out on loan to Brighton in January as he wanted to battle his way into Ange Postecoglou's plans.

Antonio Conte also didn't favour Gil, despite comparing him to Man City star Bernardo Silva and revealing the 23-year-old's burning desire to become an "important" player.

"I'm sure about Gil's future because we're talking about a player who sees football," said Conte to the media in late 2022.

"When I ask him something in the training session, he understands quickly and also his desire is to become an important player. If I have to compare him with someone I can see him like Bernardo Silva at [Man City] in his structure, but, for me, at this moment Silva is physically stronger than him but we are talking about this type of player."

Gil has gone out on loan to spells back to Spain with Valencia and ex-club Sevilla during his time at Spurs, but reports suggest he could leave permanently this summer in search of more game time. Feyenoord are rumoured to have made several offers to sign Gil already, with their club director Dennis te Kloese confirming their interest as well.

A return to his homeland hasn't been ruled out yet, so it will be interesting to see where Gil may end up, as his time with Tottenham looks likely to end soon.

Ex-Tottenham scout hints Lange could swap Gil for Rayan Cherki

If Gil does secure his move away soon, Postecoglou will need a replacement, and Tottenham are believed to be targeting Lyon sensation Rayan Cherki as an option in that regard.

Spurs apparently view Cherki as a "huge talent", amid reports he'd cost around £21 million to prise away from France. Speaking to Tottenham News, former Spurs scout King suggests technical director Lange could replace Gil with Cherki as we approach the summer window's opening.

“He sounds as though he would be an ideal replacement for Gil,” King said.

“If Gil or Giovani Lo Celso are to leave, then Tottenham need to be looking at replacements of a similar or higher level. Cherki is playing for a decent club. Players are going to be leaving so replacements need to be lined up.”

Keaton Jennings scored his maiden T20 century to haunt his former club Durham and hand Lancashire Lightning a winning start to their Vitality Blast North Group campaign at Emirates Riverside.Jennings put the home side’s attack to the sword with an outstanding knock of 108, sharing a record-breaking opening stand with Alex Davies of 170 for the Red Rose. He blasted 10 fours and three sixes to reach three figures for the first time in the format, propelling his team to a total of 190 for 3 from their 20 overs.Durham were under pressure from the off in their chase and were never able to match the required run rate. Alex Lees offered a resistance scoring 51 with a couple of maximums, but the total was always out of their reach, with the Lightning clinching the win by 27 runs.Lancashire won the toss and elected to bat first in murky conditions under lights at Emirates Riverside. Jennings took the early initiative to get the scoreboard moving for the visitors, while Davies waited patiently and capitalised in the fifth over, smashing Matty Potts for four boundaries in a row.The Lightning openers continued to press and brought up their fifty partnership from the penultimate ball of the Powerplay. Paul Coughlin was the next Durham bowler to struggle as Jennings drilled two boundaries to the fence, including a shoulder-high full toss that was signaled as a no-ball.Jennings continued his assault, reaching his half-century from only 33 balls in style clipping Brydon Carse over midwicket for a maximum. The pair put on a stand of 64 for the third wicket before Steven Croft turned one past Bedingham and Davies completed the stumping, removing the South African for 33.Lees tried to inject pace by blasting Tom Hartley over cow corner, and produced a similar stroke to bring up his half-century from 38 balls. However, once he was caught on the boundary off Matt Parkinson the Lightning closed out the victory, despite a late flurry of boundaries from Carse.

Rangers want to sign 20-year-old whizkid

According to Football Scotland, the Gers want to sign Penarol whizkid Damian Garcia to bolster their options in the middle of the park ahead of next season.

The report claims that the talented young midfielder is on the club's shortlist of targets to improve the team, following the signing of Oscar Cortes on loan from Lens earlier this month.

It states that head of recruitment Koppen has flown to Cancun for the TransferRoom summit to discuss potential deals with other club chiefs, and that Penarol had a representative at the event.

Football Scotland then goes on to speculate that talks could have taken place between the two representatives, of Rangers and Penarol, over a potential deal to sign Garcia.

Whilst it remains to be seen how far advanced a move may or may not be for the Uruguay U20 international, the Gers are seemingly keen to sign the South American gem and he could be an exciting replacement for Jack this summer.

South American football writer Nathan Joyes described it as an "exciting" link for Rangers due to the profile of signing it would represent, which is one of the reasons why it could be a fantastic deal in response to the Scotland international's exit.

The Light Blues would be bringing in a 20-year-old whizkid with plenty of years left ahead of him to grow and develop to replace a 32-year-old veteran who did not have much, if any, development left to go through.

Along with being a long-term signing due to his age and potential, Garcia could also come in as an immediate upgrade on the former Aberdeen maestro.

As you can see in the table above, Garcia's form in Uruguay during the 2024 season has been more impressive than Jack's was during the 2023/24 Scottish Premiership campaign.

They both provide a similar threat in possession in terms of scoring and creating goals but the 20-year-old offers considerably more from a defensive perspective, with his superb ability to recover the ball and make interceptions to cut out opposition attacks.

This is why the 5 foot 10 prospect could be an exciting replacement for Jack as he is a young gem who has already displayed fantastic quality at first-team level this year, particularly when it comes to his work out of possession in the middle of the park.

He will have to test negative for Covid-19 before he is allowed to join the squad again.”I am very sorry that this has happened,” Cox said in a statement. “I fully understand the consequences, and I want to apologise to everyone. The visitors did tiptoe into a lead but having ended the day on 123 for 6, ahead by 25, they’ll need an extraordinary effort from the tail to set Essex a tricky fourth-innings chase.Earlier, Wheater posted a three-year high score to give Essex a commanding first-innings lead of 98, as they pocketed four bonus points.After 15 wickets had fallen on the opening day at the Cloudfm County Ground, Chelmsford, batting seemed much easier for the most part on the day two. Wheater used the friendlier conditions to his advantage with a mature innings, partnered well by Ryan ten Doeschate and Simon Harmer.The home side’s morning, in which they lost just three wickets, was spoiled slightly by a back spasm suffered by ten Doeschate.
