Tahuhu, Devine smother India despite Mandhana's record fifty

Lea Tahuhu and Sophie Devine headlined New Zealand’s all-round dominance in the T20I series opener where India left out Mithali Raj and then lost nine wickets for 35 runs, and the match

Mandhana on how India lost after ‘cruising’

Mithali Raj was dropped from India’s starting XI for a second straight T20I, in the series opener against New Zealand in Wellington, their first match in the format since her controversial omission from the XI for the semi-final of the World T20 in the Caribbean late last year. Then, like in that semi-final against England, Smriti Mandhana helped India get off to a promising start, this time in collaboration with Jemimah Rodrigues, after which they suffered a collapse. In Wellington, on Wednesday, Mandhana smashed the fastest T20I fifty for India women, surpassing her own record, before the side lost nine wickets for 34 in a chase of 160. The New Zealand fightback, sparked by a momentum-shifting catch by substitute fielder Hannah Rowe, was led by fast bowler Lea Tahuhu, wristspinner Amelia Kerr, and offspinner Leigh Kasperek.Having lost her opening partner, debutant Priya Punia, in the first over, Mandhana negated the hosts’ early advantage, carrying on with the form that had earned her the Player-of-the-Series award in the preceding ODIs. She bunted seven fours and three sixes on her way to a 24-ball half-century, besting her previous record of 25 balls, against England in March 2018.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

She put on 98 runs with No. 3 Rodrigues, and with the team needing 70 at the halfway mark with nine wickets in hand, there was little to suggest the chase was in jeopardy. But then came the one-handed catch from Rowe at deep extra cover, off Kerr’s bowling.Four balls later, Tahuhu dismissed Rodrigues, who fell for 39 attempting a cut only to edge it to Martin. Tahuhu’s next over turned out to be a double-wicket maiden, as she accounted for Dayalan Hemalatha and Anuja Patil.Even as the asking rate mounted, with India needing 38 off the last three overs, Harmanpreet Kaur’s big-hitting offered hope. She slog-swept a six off Kerr in the 18th over but off the next ball, a charge down the track led to her being stumped by Martin for a 15-ball 17. There was no lower-order rearguard as Kasperek removed Deepti Sharma and wicketkeeper Taniya Bhatia the next over, and Sophie Devine picked up the last wicket in the final over.”My job is to go out there and bowl fast and intimidate a little bit and get the energy up around the group but it’s not the be-all and end-all,” Tahuhu said at the post-match press conference. “They bat really deep. But certainly we needed to get out Mandhana and Rodrigues; [they] played outstandingly out there today. But it did show there’s a bit of a vulnerability in the middle order, so we’ll look into that as we go into the next game. Obviously Mandhana’s good on the short ball, so we just tried to talk about trying to bowl a little bit fuller. Then when we broke that partnership, we really jumped in.”Devine had earlier provided the boost for New Zealand’s score of 159 for 4 with a blistering 48-ball 62, her ninth T20I fifty. Making deft use of her feet and the crease, Devine blunted India’s attack as no bowler aside from Deepti conceded less than 7.50 runs per over. Devine found able assistance from Amy Satterthwaite, the pair adding 69 for the third wicket for the home side.Once Devine fell in the 16th over, Martin, along with Frances McKay, gave New Zealand more impetus. Martin, who had missed the ODI series due to work commitments, smashed 27 off 14, and helped the side add 51 off the last five overs, as her partnership with McKay yielded 38 off 3.3 overs.

Michael Neser rocks Western Australia on 15-wicket day

The Warriors bounce back to reduce visiting Queensland to 5 for 71 after folding for 138 in their first hit

The Report by Alex Malcolm20-Mar-2019

Michael Neser has put his name in lights as a potential Ashes tourist after a stunning five-wicket haul on a day when fast bowlers dominated at the WACA.Neser took 5 for 15 from 15 overs, with all five dismissals caught behind the wicket, to help bowl Western Australia out for just 138 on a green seamer. The Warriors bounced back emphatically late in the day, reducing the visitors to 5 for 66 before Neser and Sam Heazlett steadied the ship with a calming, unbeaten 29-run stand to see the Bulls to stumps.Neser now has 30 wickets at an average of 23.30 for the season and 451 runs and counting at an average of 50.11 with five half-centuries.There was no hesitation from Bulls captain Jimmy Peirson to bowl after winning the toss and Neser revelled in the conditions. He squared up both Cameron Bancroft and D’Arcy Short with balls that seamed a long way before they were edged into the safe hands of Joe Burns and Marnus Labuschagne respectively. Mitchell Marsh also fell caught at slip to Neser attempting to defend on the front foot.Sam Whiteman was one of the few WA batsmen who looked comfortable against the moving ball, leaving decisively and pouncing on the odd loose delivery. He and Hilton Cartwright guided the home side to lunch but both fell shortly after. Cartwright was caught in the gully before Whiteman fell for 38, closing the face too soon be caught and bowled off the leading edge to Mark Steketee. The rot then set in. WA lost their last seven wickets for just 69 runs. Neser took two of the last four to complete just his second five-wicket haul in first-class cricket.Queensland’s innings started horrendously, slumping to 3 for 18. Joel Paris’ late and prodigious swing accounted for Matt Renshaw and Labuschagne before Charlie Hemphrey was bowled shouldering arms to Mitch Marsh.Joe Burns made 31 out of 49 in the difficult batting conditions before fending at and edging Liam Guthrie to second slip where Bancroft held the sharp chance.Peirson sliced a catch to the gully off Kelly to leave the Bulls in a worse position than the Warriors were at five-down. But Heazlett and Neser were solid in the fading light to reach stumps 43 runs behind with five first-innings wickets in hand.

Man Utd in talks to sign £60m star who could send McTominay packing

Manchester United are in need of improvement heading into the second half of the campaign after a dismal first few months of the 2023/24 season.

The Red Devils are currently eighth in the Premier League table and have lost nine of their first 20 matches in the division, which has left them nine points adrift of the top four.

Erik ten Hag's side also finished bottom of their Champions League group, with one win from six matches, and do not have knockout football in Europe to look forward to over the coming months.

The January transfer window officially opened for business last week and this has provided the club with an opportunity to give the fans some optimism.

All confirmed Premier League done deals: January transfer window 2024

With the January transfer window coming towards its conclusion, FFC has all the info for tracking your club’s winter transfer activity.

ByLuke Randall Feb 1, 2024

An impressive signing or two to bolster the squad could improve the mood around Old Trafford and increase the chances of a successful end to the campaign.

Manchester United transfer news – Amadou Onana

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his group appear to be hard at work to do just that as it has been reported that the club are attempting to sign Everton star Amadou Onana.

FootballTransfers claim that United have opened talks with the Toffees as they look to strike a deal to bring the central midfielder to Manchester this month.

The report states that ten Hag identified Onana as a target during the summer transfer window but the Red Devils did not have the funds to snap him up. This led to a loan deal for Sofyan Amrabat from Fiorentina as an alternative.

However, FootballTransfers add that the funds are now there for United to make one significant addition to their squad, whilst any other deals would likely be loans at this time.

Everton midfielder Amadou Onana.

It reports that the Premier League giants appreciate his versatility and ability to play in the number six position, which is why they would like to sign the talented youngster and are now in talks with Everton.

Football Insider, meanwhile, have claimed that fellow top-flight side Arsenal are exploring a possible swoop for the Belgium international and that the Toffees are set to demand a fee of £60m for his services.

If United can secure a deal for Onana ahead of the Gunners then the impressive dynamo could send Scott McTominay packing, due to his superior quality in the middle of the park.

FootballTransfers' report on the Everton star adds that Sean Dyche's team have identified the Scotland international as a major transfer target to improve their team.

Dyche wants proven Premier League performers and the Toffees have a long-standing interest in the United academy graduate, which means that there is enough interest there for the club to shift McTominay on this month.

Ten Hag could bring Onana in and then sanction a departure for the Scottish giant, which the report suggests would benefit both teams with Financial Fair Play (FFP) restrictions.

McTominay's season in numbers

The 27-year-old has featured fairly regularly for the club so far this season with 17 appearances in United's 20 Premier League matches so far.

He has started 12 games in the top-flight and contributed at the top end of the pitch with five goals, zero assists, and one 'big chance' created.

McTominay does not get too involved in the build-up play in possession. He has averaged 31.43 passes per 90 in the Premier League this season, which is within the bottom 9% of his positional peers.

This means that the Scottish midfielder also ranks within the bottom 15% for progressive passes (2.91) and the bottom 17% for Expected Assisted Goals (0.03) per 90.

These statistics show that the towering number 39 does not offer much quality on the ball to progress the play or to create opportunities for his teammates.

On the defensive side of the game, he has averaged 2.3 tackles and interceptions combined and 3.0 ball recoveries per match to go along with a duel success rate of 51%.

McTominay is not an outstanding operator out of possession and has not showcased his strength as opposition players have almost got the better of him as much as he has of them.

The statistics that show why United should sign Onana

The United dud could now be sent packing by Onana as the Everton star has the potential to offer more on and off the ball in the middle of the park.

Signed from Lille in the summer of 2022, the 22-year-old ace has 18 months of experience in the Premier League under his belt and has proven his quality at that level.

The Belgian whiz, who was once described as a "one-man army" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, could, firstly, offer more to United in build-up play.

Onana has averaged 42.84 passes per 90 in the top-flight this season and has made 4.73 progressive passes per 90 in that time, which means that the Everton star looks to get on the ball to progress play far more often than McTominay does from a central midfield position.

The £60m-rated dynamo ranks within the top 15% of his positional peers in the Premier League this season for Expected Assisted Goals (0.16) per 90 and this shows that his progressive passing has led to him being an excellent creator for his side.

These statistics indicate that the United target would be an upgrade for ten Hag in terms of what he is able to offer in deep build-up and in-and-round the box with his progressive and creative passing in comparison to McTominay.

However, Onana also has the defensive and physical qualities to provide more than the Scotland international out of possession in midfield.

The Toffees titan has made 3.2 tackles and interceptions combined and 6.5 ball recoveries per match to go along with a duel success rate of 65% across 16 Premier League appearances this season.

As you can see in the table above, Onana has outperformed McTominay in a number of key defensive metrics this season for Everton.

Couple this with his superior progressive qualities in possession and it illustrates why United can send the Scottish midfielder packing by signing the Toffees star.

Paulo Henrique Ganso e Matheus Ferraz seguem fora. Marcos Paulo e Wellington Silva devem ser barrados novamente. Ambos estão de saída do Tricolor.

MS Dhoni's on-field outburst 'probably not' right – Jos Buttler

Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming said that Dhoni took the field only to get clarity since there was confusion about the no-ball decision

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Apr-20191:46

Dhoni was fired up by the way the no-ball decision was handled – Fleming

Rajasthan Royals batsman Jos Buttler believes Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni’s decision to step onto the field to protest an umpiring call was “probably not” the right thing to do in the last over of their match on Thursday night. The incident took place with Super Kings needing eight runs off three balls. Ben Stokes bowled a waist-high full toss to Mitchell Santner, and even though umpire Ulhas Gandhe had signalled a no-ball immediately, square-leg umpire Bruce Oxenford later shook his head to overturn the original decision. That led to lengthy discussions mainly between Santner’s partner Ravindra Jadeja and the umpires before Dhoni, who had been dismissed off the previous ball, walked out to join them. Dhoni was later fined 50% of his match fees for a Code of Conduct breach.”I’m not sure if that’s the right thing to do or not,” Buttler said at the post-match press conference of Dhoni’s decision to walk out on the field. “Obviously the tensions are running high in the IPL and every run counts. Yeah, it was a big moment in the game, but whether stepping onto the pitch is quite right? No, probably not.”Obviously, it’s a bit controversial. The umpires came to a decision but I was at the boundary so I wasn’t quite sure what was going on.”Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming later said that Dhoni took the field only to get clarity since there was confusion about the no-ball decision. He did not say if it was the right thing to do or not.”What wasn’t right was the confusion around the decision. It’s above my paygrade to really get further than that,” Fleming said.”My understanding and discussing it with the captain was we saw a no-ball called, and then there was confusion. Our understanding was that the umpire at the bowler’s end had called the no-ball and then there was confusion around whether it was a no-ball or not. MS was after some clarity and it didn’t seem to be coming. So, he took the opportunity to go out and discuss it with the umpires. That’s how I saw it and that’s how I discussed it with him afterwards.”He only just wanted clarity. The rights and wrongs will be discussed by everybody, including Mahi, I’m sure. But, I think, it’ll be a discussion for the umpires afterwards and I am a watcher as you guys are, for now. But he was certainly fired up about the way the decision was handled and why it was overturned or if it was overturned. So, there was a lack of clarity, obviously, for him and he wanted to get it clarified at a key moment. It’s unusual but he’s usually pretty calculated. It’ll be something he will be questioned about for sure, for a long time.”MS Dhoni is irate at a contentious no-ball call•BCCI

Royals had put on 151 for 7 and had Super Kings in trouble on 24 for 4 in the sixth over before Dhoni and Ambati Rayudu salvaged the chase with a 95-run stand. Both batsmen scored half-centuries and struck two fours and three sixes each to snatch the momentum from Royals.”It is a tough one to take, getting into a winning position and not able to get over the line, the boys will be very disappointed,” Buttler said. “But, I think that’s been the story of our season so far. We have had some games that we should have won and closed out but for a few reasons, we have not been able to do it. We need to get it right, fast.”Royals are now only above winless Royal Challengers Bangalore on the points table with one win from six games. How do they get out of it?”The way out is simple, we have to play better and longer,” Buttler said. “We are just not putting those performances together. We have played well in stages but against quality oppositions and some of the best players in the world, if you can’t do it for the whole 40 overs then it’s tough to win the game.”Fleming, too, admitted the weaknesses in his side, even though they sit on top of the table with six wins from seven games. The two main areas he identified that needed their attention were their fielding and death bowling.”There’s a lot of areas of concern,” Fleming said. “Our top order has been playing on a tough wicket in Chennai so we’ve got to make sure our confidence is high. Being 20-odd for 4, you’re not going to win many games. And [another concern is] just finishing off an innings with our death bowling. It’s hard and most teams are struggling. But if there are two areas we want to get better at, we’re working hard on, is that and we have to work hard on our fielding. We’ve got a number of holes but we know where they are and we’ll try and cover them up as much as we can.”

Newcastle presented chance to sign "unreal" £20m gem ahead of Spurs

Out of the Champions League, out of the Carabao Cup and sitting ninth in the Premier League, Newcastle United's hopes of replicating last season's success have so far crashed and burned. But the January transfer window could fix that.

The Magpies must make up for a disappointing summer transfer window, which failed to have any lasting impact on Eddie Howe's side. With European and domestic football to balance, the former Bournemouth boss predictably struggled to find fresh options within his squad when injuries piled up.

Looking to get things right this time around, reports suggest that Newcastle are among the sides to have been informed about the availability of one particular European gem, who has already showcased his talents against Manchester United.

Newcastle transfer news

Out of Newcastle's summer arrivals, only Tino Livramento is having the desired impact, with Sandro Tonali serving a 10-month ban for breaching betting rules, Harvey Barnes injured and Lewis Hall out-of-favour under Howe.

Meanwhile, those who have been fit have hardly been firing, handing those at St James' Park an uninspiring side to work with as of late. Perhaps seeking what could prove to be a crucial spark, Newcastle could yet solve their problem in the form of a future star, however.

FC Copenhagen midfielderRoony Bardghji.

According to HITC, Newcastle have been informed about the availability of Roony Bardghji. The Copenhagen winger, still only 18-years-old, has impressed this season and stole the headlines with the winning goal in a 4-3 thriller against Manchester United in the Champions League group stages.

Attracting the interest of Newcastle, Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and Brentford as a result, Copenhagen have reportedly placed a £20m price tag on their teenager if they are to sanction his departure this month. With a busy race for his signature and a fair low price tag, the winger could be one to keep an eye on.

Why "unreal" Bardghji is a future star

If Newcastle want to become a consistent competitor at the top of England's top flight, then they must find a standout star to build Howe's side around. And Bardghji could be that player. At 18, he's already made his mark against Manchester United and he's only likely to get even better as he earns more moments in the spotlight.

For just a reported £20m too, Newcastle could land a bargain for the ages this month and one that Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig is certainly a fan of.

Bardghji's stats have backed up his potential so far this season too. The young winger has scored 11 goals in 30 appearances in all competitions, a stunning return for a teenager playing his first full term in senior football. It begs the question as to just how clinical he will be once he realises his potential and matures both physically and mentally, so Magpies fans may hope that process takes place on Tyneside.

'Dream season for us and it's just the start' – Shreyas Iyer

Iyer said a bit of bad planning during their batting innings cost Capitals in what was otherwise a season to be proud of

Varun Shetty in Visakhapatnam10-May-2019

Shreyas Iyer thumps it over the off side•BCCI

Reflecting on Delhi Capitals’ run to the IPL playoffs this season, Shreyas Iyer called it a “dream season” for the side, one he expects his team to build on next year. Last season, Capitals, who had played as Delhi Daredevils, had finished last on the table with only five wins. This season, apart from changes in name and ownership, and the addition of Sourav Ganguly to the management, Capitals ended the league stage with 18 points, just as many as finalists Mumbai Indian and Chennai Super Kings managed. On Friday, the Delhi franchise were on the cusp of their first ever IPL final, but fell short to a vastly experienced Chennai Super Kings in the second qualifier.”It’s been a dream season for us and it’s just the start,” Iyer told the host broadcaster after the match. “We’ve got a lot more to come next season and yes, we have gelled as a team and we’ve found the pace and now it’s time to grow from here on. I am really of proud the way [Capitals] played this season. Last season was really disappointing for us and the way we came out this year, everybody took that initiative and responsibility till this game.”Capitals needed to pull off their third consecutive win in seven days to make the final, but couldn’t respond adequately as Super Kings put a young team under pressure multiple times in their pursuit of an eighth IPL final appearance. Capitals were restricted to 147 and Iyer later admitted their plans had not been up to scratch.”At the end of the day, it’s a T20 game,” he said. “You can’t restrict your strokes. We back our instincts as players. The way we got starts, we needed someone to take on that charge and start hitting boundaries and sixes so that we can get on top of their bowlers.”Chennai have got experienced players in their side. They have been playing for many years. They knew how the wicket played in the second innings. Also, they made a good decision fielding first. As I said, we were a little bit bad in planning out the innings. We should have been little responsible and taken the team through to the last few overs and set it for the hard-hitters at the end.”Capitals promoted Colin Munro up to No. 3 in the second qualifier after the batsman had struggled against spin in the eliminator on Wednesday. One of the reasons for this, Iyer said, was a gamble on Super Kings bowling an extra over of Shardul Thakur in that period. This didn’t materialise and the resulting change in batting order meant a reasonably successful top four was disrupted. Rishabh Pant batted at No. 5 and Iyer himself dropped to No 4, eventually falling while trying to slog Imran Tahir over midwicket.”I thought that if I play few balls and take time, it doesn’t matter because I can capitalize later on. And I have done that in the past. I was taking my time and I thought Imran’s over was to go for,” Iyer said. “It was right in the slot but I just mistimed it and we started losing wickets from there again. So it was a miscalculation which happened and it was a bad day for us.”At 24, this was Iyer’s second full season as captain of a team that currently has 14 of their 24 players under the age of 26. Iyer said the presence of Ricky Ponting alongside him for a second straight season, and the subsequent addition of Ganguly to the leadership did wonders for the team.”[Ponting]’s definitely a legend. Whenever he talks in the dressing room, no one has to talk after that. Because if someone does that, it’s of no use. The way he talks, it’s just like a song or a rap. He’s got that flow and he’s been doing it for 20 years. As youngsters, we are really happy and lucky to have him as our coach. The positivity that he spreads, the freedom that he gives to every player is something out of the box. That’s what we need as youngsters. We need someone to support us and back us. That’s what we get from Ricky.”What Capitals have also got from Ponting this season is a public bashing of the pitch at their home ground, Feroz Shah Kotla, which the team coach called “by far and away the worst” after a defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad early in the season. Capitals lost three of their seven home games on a surface that didn’t suit their free-flowing batsmen. In hindsight, had those results been different, it may have given the team the luxury of top-two finish, boosting their prospects of making the final. Iyer said it was something to think about before the next season.”It’s something to think about, the home games especially we didn’t win that many matches,” Iyer said. “But can’t really complain about the wickets. We have played a lot of our games on slow wickets, we’ve been practicing a lot, even the wickets we practice on in Delhi aren’t that safe for the batsmen because they have uneven bounce.”
