Paddy Upton has been appointed as head coach of the Rajasthan Royals for the 2019 season, which begins in March. This is Upton’s second stint as head coach of the franchise, having previously held the position between 2013 and 2015. Shane Warne, who was head coach in 2018, will likely assume a brand ambassadorial role, as earlier reported by ESPNcricinfo.Upton was at the helm in 2013 when Rajasthan Royals turned their fortunes around after a bad start and made it to the semi-finals. In that season, Royals were also finalists in the now defunct Champions League, and under Upton, they were unbeaten in 12 consecutive home games. He also served as assistant coach to Gary Kirsten at India and South Africa.Upton will form Royals’ central coaching group along with former Debyshire quick Steffan Jones, who had been appointed the franchise’s fast-bowling coach last season, and director of cricket Zubin Bharucha. Former Mumbai players Amol Muzumdar and Sairaj Bahutule have been retained as batting coach and spin-bowling coach respectively.

A billionaire-owned Premier League club want to complete the signing of a highly-rated Rangers player, according to a fresh transfer update.
Rangers transfer news
The Gers are managed to fight their way right back into the Scottish Premiership title race, having kicked on since Philippe Clement replaced Michael Beale as manager.
While Rangers are now only five points behind their rivals with a game in hand, that's not to say that new signings should be ignored during the January transfer window. In fact, it is imperative that some key business is conducted, in order to build on this current momentum and ensure that a great chance to bring in reinforcements isn't wasted.
A number of players have been linked with a move to Rangers in recent times, including Everton centre-back Ben Godfrey, who could be an exciting signing at Ibrox. Motherwell youngster Lennon Miller is another individual who is seen as a target for Clement, and there are more out there.
On the flip side, a current Gers man is now being backed to make a move away from the club, following some high-profile interest in him.
Arsenal want Rangers gem Mason Munn
According to a new report from Football Insider, Premier League giants Arsenal are keeping tabs on Rangers youngster Mason Munn, ahead of a possible move.
"Arsenal are among a number of Premier League clubs tracking Rangers goalkeeper Mason Munn after luring their top talent spotter, sources have told Football Insider. The 17-year-old is earning rave reviews after excellent outings for the Gers’ B team this season, which has put him on the radar of several English clubs.
"The Gunners have made regular checks on the Northern Irish sensation as Rangers’ B team have played against English clubs multiple times this season. Rangers beat a host of Premier League clubs to secure Munn’s signature in the summer of 2022 from Northern Irish outfit Glentoran. Now, top-flight sides have reemerged with interest in the six-foot-two shot-stopper."
Munn may be something of an unknown to many, considering he is still only 17 years of age, but losing him could be a future blow for Rangers, considering the long-term potential he may have. He has won two caps apiece for Northern Ireland's Under-19s and Under-17s, and has also made a couple of appearances for Rangers' B team.

Who is Philippe Clement eyeing up in the transfer window ahead of his first full season at Ibrox?
ByRoss Kilvington Jul 9, 2024
The fact that Arsenal are interested in the young star says a lot about his ability, considering the billionaire-owned Gunners are one of England's top clubs currently, building a team full of elite young talent, whether it be Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli or William Saliba.
The lure of heading to north London could be great for Munn, so it would be difficult to begrudge him a move away, but the hope is that he feels that staying put at Rangers for the foreseeable future could still be best for his development, continuing to grow as a player and hopefully being handed some first-team minutes, but his future appears to be one to keep an eye on in 2024.
Manish Pandey and Shreyas Gopal lead Karnataka fightback after early losses against Saurashtra

Umesh Yadav returned his career-best first-class figures•Getty Images
ScorecardUmesh took seven wickets in 12 overs to run through Kerala, scuttling them for 106 all out in 28.4 overs. Faiz Fazal then steered Vidarbha’s reply with 75, taking them to 171 for 5 in 45 overs, with the lead standing at 65 runs.Kerala’s position was ameliorated by late strikes, when Sandeep Warrier accounted for Fazal and Atharva Taide, while Basil Thampi ensured nightwatchman Rajneesh Gurbani’s stay lasted only six balls. Vidarbha were in command at 170 for 2, but lost three wickets in 2.2 overs, including Taide off the last ball before stumps.Fazal had won the toss and put Kerala in on a spicy pitch at Krishnagiri Stadium in Wayanad. This was the same venue where Kerala had beaten Gujarat in the quarter-finals, with no team scoring more than 185 and seamers accounting for 34 of the 38 wickets that fell to bowlers.Jaffer had come into the game with 969 runs, and though he was out for 34 to a good catch at slip by KB Arun Karthik, it was enough to take him past 1,000 runs in the season. It was exactly ten years after he had made 1260 runs for Mumbai in 2008-09, and even at almost 41 years old, Jaffer showed that he was well up with modern memes in acing the #10YearChallenge.On the day though, Vidarbha’s batting was held together by the other veteran in the team. Fazal’s strokeplay on a pitch that offered something to seamers was compact and assured. His wicket did precipitate a mini-collapse, but Vidarbha’s lead in what is potentially a low-scoring game is already significant, and they have the assurance of unleashing Umesh in the second innings.Kerala’s batsmen had failed to handle Umesh’s pace and hostility in the first innings, and among the top order, only captain Sachin Baby (22) reached double figures. Vishnu Vinod, batting at No. 7, hit out to score 37 not out, adding 25 runs for the last wicket with MD Nidheesh while farming the strike. That stand took Kerala into three figures, but they couldn’t go much beyond that.Umesh’s latest performance came on the heels of his nine-wicket match haul ” target=”_blank”>against Uttarakhand in the quarter-finals, for which he was named the man of the match. He hadn’t been available for Vidarbha in the league stages as he was on national duty.Rajneesh Gurbani, who shared the new ball with Umesh, took the other three wickets, doubling his tally for what has been a sub-par season so far. Vidarbha didn’t need to give their spinners any overs, despite the pair of Aditya Sarwate (44) and Akshay Wakhare (27) being their leading wicket-takers this season. Karnataka were left to rue two bad periods of batting that bookended the day. They had been reduced to 30 for 4 after Jaydev Unadkat’s first spell of 7-3-19-3. Their middle order fashioned a recovery, but from 232 for 5, they collapsed again to end the day on 264 for 9.Unadkat made light of losing the toss at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore, tearing through a star-studded Karnataka top order. His victims were R Samarth, lbw to the third ball of the match, KV Siddharth, Karnataka’s highest run-getter this season, and Mayank Agarwal, India’s newly minted Test opener.Fellow left-arm pacer Chetan Sakariya, the 20-year-old who had made his debut this season, was rewarded for his tight lines and subtle movement with Karun Nair’s wicket. However, captain Manish Pandey came out with positive intent and combined with vice-captain Shreyas Gopal to stabilise Karnataka. Pandey had spent the previous two days polishing his attacking game in the nets, and he brought his full repertoire to the middle, driving and flicking with élan. He got to a half-century at quicker than a run-a-ball, and forced Unadkat to pull back from all-out attack to slightly more in-and-out fields. At the other end, Shreyas was more patient, and showed his batting chops. Pandey looked like he would play the defining knock of the innings, but Unadkat came back after lunch and bent his back to bowl with a bit more pace, getting him to be late on the ball before it thudded into the stumps. The fifth-wicket pair had put on a century stand but at 136 for 5, Karnataka were not yet safe. However, wicketkeeper-batsman S Sharath, playing only his fourth first-class match, showed great composure to string together another substantial stand with Shreyas. While Pandey had chosen to counterattack, both Sharath and Shreyas were more cautious, and built steadily. However, they seemed to have decided that among the Saurashtra bowlers, Kamlesh Makvana’s gentle offspin was the one to target, and that eventually led to Karnataka’s undoing. Makvana had leaked runs at a higher rate than Saurashtra might have liked, but when Shreyas had a lapse in concentration on 87, he missed a ball that went with the angle from around the stumps and bowled him.Karnataka’s lower order seemed intent on following Pandey’s method, but without the accompanying skill to execute it. K Gowtham was out to a casual waft three balls after being reprieved when Unadkat dropped a catch, while both Vinay Kumar and Abhimanyu Mithun were dismissed slogging across the line.Sharath remained unbeaten on 74, but he now has only No.11 Ronit More for company.

Everton, despite their form, losing just twice in their last six Premier League game, sit just one point adrift of the relegation zone due to their 10-point deduction, having played one more game than 18th-placed Luton Town. The Toffees will hope that their form eventually steers them clear of the dropzone to ease any current fears once and for all.
What could help to secure their top-flight status is the January transfer window, which could see them land some new reinforcements for Sean Dyche, who has more than earned the backing of those at Goodison Park. Among those who could come in is a Premier League player who looks increasingly likely to leave his current club.
Everton transfer news
Dyche recently spoke about the potential of new arrivals at Everton in the January transfer window, saying: "The best position you can ever be in to get targets is having money. We can talk about it all we want; everyone is doing their homework, everyone has targets. At some point you need money. At this current time, we're sitting tight and seeing what can happen. We have a good squad when everyone is fit. The depth is in question because of injuries and the schedule. It has affected us."
Everton could copy Garner deal by signing "magic" £9m-rated Harrison upgrade

If money is an obstacle, then the Toffees would be wise to look at some cut-price deals, which could see one particular player arrive. According to Claret and Hugh, Everton are eyeing a move to sign Ben Johnson, with the West Ham United man reportedly refusing to sign a new deal at the London club amid £60,000-per-week wage demands. With the right-back's current deal set to come to an end in the summer, the Hammers could be forced to cash in during the winter window, potentially allowing Everton to swoop in.
"Important" Johnson can add depth for Everton
As things stand, it is Nathan Patterson who occupies the right-back role at Everton, but depth is no bad thing. Without Patterson, the Toffees would have to turn to an ageing Ashley Young to fill in, which isn't exactly a long-term solution. Johnson, still only 23 years old, could therefore solve an Everton problem before it even reaches a point of crisis. A defender with experience in European football too, the West Ham man is exactly the type of player who could help take the Merseyside club back into the top half.
Ben Johnson West Ham
Johnson has earned plenty of praise during his time at West Ham, including from David Moyes in the early days. He said via Football London:
"It’s been very good, I’m really pleased for Ben. He’s a bit of utility player for us, he’s been here for a while. He’s a really important player for us. In the squad and the group he’s really important. Quite often we’ve brought him on and used him in different roles and he’s had a chance to have some games under his belt, he’s not let us down and scored a good goal in midweek.
“It’s good because it’s competition for Vladimir, and I’ve got Ryan Fredericks as well. I think at the moment Ben has done really, really well and stepped in at a period where we didn’t have either of the other two right backs available. He’s done as well as anybody.”
