Ecclestone takes career-best 4-14, India tumble to 113

India were bundled out for a mere 113, with Sophie Ecclestone and Danielle Hazell sharing eight wickets, as England cantered to an eight-wicket victory to level the series

ScorecardWhile the series opener between India and England went down to the wire – the hosts toiled to victory in the final over by just one wicket – the second ODI was less evenly contested. India were bundled out for a mere 113, allowing England’s top four to canter to an eight-wicket victory to level the series. The toss might have gone Mithali Raj’s way, but not much else did thereafter. India threw away an opportunity to post a big total after electing to bat first. What cost them more was that they failed to bat out all 50 overs. Spin twins Danielle Hazell and Sophie Ecclestone did the bulk of the damage, sharing eight wickets between them. Hazell dismissed top-order big guns Raj and Harmanpreet Kaur cheaply, while Ecclestone picked up Veda Krishnamurty and more importantly Smriti Mandhana, India’s highest run-scorer in the game.Mandhana’s innings showed glimpses of fluency before an Ecclestone delivery knocked into her off stump, leaving India reeling at 80 for 5. Within two overs, that position had worsened to 81 for 7. As the spinners wreaked havoc, the only batsman who hung in there amidst the storm was Deepti Sharma. Her 25-run partnership with Jhulan Goswami meant India somehow crossed the three-figure mark.Five – that’s how many maidens Ecclestone bowled in her quota of 10 overs. She displayed remarkable accuracy and ensured India’s lower-middle order did not tee off at any point. Finishing with career-best figures of 4 for 14 made Ecclestone a runaway choice for the Player of the Match award.England’s no-nonsense approach in the chase was led by Danielle Wyatt. Her 43-ball 47 saw the visitors coast to 73 at the end of the 15th over. Ekta Bisht, however, denied Wyatt a fine half-century as the batsman yorked herself. In her next over, Bisht once again got a breakthrough for her team, her second victim being Amy Jones who departed without scoring. But that was all as far as India’s reasons to smile were concerned.Skipper Heather Knight then joined Tammy Beaumont and the duo steered England to victory with 21 overs to spare. The captain smashed Poonam Yadav to the boundary to bring up the winning runs and make it 1-1 in the series. On a track that spun and kept low, the spinners unsurprisingly headlined the game, taking all 11 wickets to fall to bowlers (there was also one run-out). Victory also kept England win with a chance of winning the three-match series – something they have never previously done in India. “I only found out this morning that we haven’t won a series here,” Knight said. “That will keep us motivated for the third game.”

Imagine him & Beto: Moyes could find Antonio 2.0 in "prolific" Everton teen

When David Moyes replaced Sean Dyche in the Goodison Park dugout, it was the beginning of a defining period for Everton, and one they have passed with flying colours.

Everton’s battling win over Crystal Palace last weekend has made it four wins from five Premier League matches, with James Tarkowski’s thunderbolt also salvaging a last-gasp draw in the Merseyside Derby one week ago.

The skipper came up trumps, but Beto’s goal may prove to be more significant, for the centre-forward has finally hit his goalscoring stride for the Toffees.

Why Beto's form is so significant

Four goals in his past three top-flight fixtures. It’s as if Moyes has taken the lid off a boiling pot of potential within this Everton squad, and players are finally realising that, actually, they can play.

Everton manager David Moyes andBetoafter the match

Everton signed Beto, 26, from Italian club Udinese for a tall £26m fee in August 2023, with Dyche and Farhad Moshiri seeking cover for the injury-prone Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Calvert-Lewin is sidelined at the moment but he’s enjoyed a comparatively injury-free term for Everton, but with only three goals from 22 league matches, it’s clear he’s flattering to deceive.

Combine that with the fitness woes of Armando Broja and Youssef Chermiti and you’ve got something of a conundrum. It was vital that Beto stepped up, and he has.

However, the Guinea Bissau international has been linked with a move back to the Serie A across the past two windows, and with DCL out of a deal this summer, it would be neat if Moyes could promote Everton’s next academy star.

Everton's next academy star

Beto’s form suggests that he could be an attractive long-term option for Moyes’ project, with his powerful running and bullish presence perfect for the Premier League. It’s almost surprising that it’s taken him so long to get going.

Beto

Finding a homegrown prospect to learn from his ways could bear dividends for the team over the coming years, and Moyes may find his man in 19-year-old Omari Benjamin.

Benjamin is a dynamic forward who has been a steady source of goals for U21s manager Paul Tait, scoring seven and assisting two more across all competitions this term – the same haul as Beto for the senior team.

Benjamin, who was poached from Arsenal’s Hale End last summer after a trial, has excellent technique and impressive hold-up play, with his ability to mix it up across various positions and indeed style of play suggesting that he could be Moyes’ next version of Michail Antonio.

Antonio, 34, has been out of action for several months following a horrific car accident that he is making good progress in recovering from, but he’s been regarded as a “monster” of a forward by journalist Paul Brown, owing to his strength and focal presence in the final third.

In The Pipeline

The Jamaican international – who is also West Ham’s record scorer in the Premier League – was so often Moyes’ go-to man at the London Stadium, having scored 55 goals and registered 26 assists in 182 games under the Scotsman. Only Jarrod Bowen (60), Tim Cahill (68) and Leon Osman (70) have scored more goals for Moyes in his entire managerial career, as per Transfermarkt.

Benjamin, then, could well look to emerge as the new Antonio for the experienced coach. The teen star stands at 6 foot and has also been hailed as a “prolific” striker during his formative years at Arsenal by youth reporter Jeorge Bird.

Moyes proved with Antonio that he can eke out every bit of quality from such a profile, and given the security that Beto is currently providing the front of the Everton ship, now might be the perfect time to promote an academy gem and ease the injury issues.

Everton flop was "better than Gerrard", now he's worth less than Keane

He failed to live up to the hype at Goodison Park during his time with Everton.

Returning Leverock fires Bermuda to comfortable win

After being benched from Bermuda’s first two matches for disciplinary reasons, Kamau Leverock blasted 66 off 43 balls to set up a 58-run win over Jersey

The Report by Peter Della Penna in Kuala Lumpur02-May-2018
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsICC/Ian Jacobs

After being benched for Bermuda’s first two matches at the WCL Division Four for disciplinary reasons, star allrounder Kamau Leverock reminded Jersey of his talent with a devastating 66 off 43 balls to set up a 58-run win over Jersey at Kinrara Oval.Returning to the scene of Saturday’s training-session tirade that earned him a two-match ban, Leverock punished Jersey’s bowling attack after they had sent Bermuda in at the toss. Leverock, and his opening partner Okera Bascome, each hit a four and two sixes off Cornelis Bodenstein and Anthony Hawkins-Kay to take Bermuda to 32 for 0 in two overs. Leverock brought up a 28-ball fifty in the 10th over, off Charles Perchard.Leverock’s onslaught against Jersey’s bowlers was reminiscent of a similar shellacking two years ago, at the last Division Four in Los Angeles, when he smashed 137 off 111 balls.Elliot Miles eventually ended the opening stand at 52, but Leverock and captain Terryn Fray put on another 58 for the second wicket to take Bermuda to a commanding 110 for 1 in 15 overs.Bermuda’s scoring rate fell dramatically after Leverock’s dismissal, going at under four an over the rest of the way, until they were bowled out for 242 in the final over. The left-arm spin trio of Miles, Ben Stevens and Nat Watkins combined to take eight of the ten wickets. On what has been a good batting surface at the Kinrara Oval through the tournament, Jersey stuttered in reply, falling to 32 for 3 inside the Powerplay. Stevens once again provided a major contribution with the bat to give Jersey hope, top-scoring with 42 off 52 balls at No. 3. But Jersey were hurt by a number of batsmen failing to convert their starts in the middle and lower order.Offspinning allrounder Dion Stovell, who took the new ball and dismissed Peter Gough in the fourth over, came back to spin out the tail, finishing with 4 for 33 as Jersey were bowled out in the 43rd over for 184.

West Ham: Moyes must unleash 5 ft 9 ‘superstar’ alongside Paqueta

West Ham United kick off their EFL Cup campaign against Lincoln City away from the London Stadium this evening as they look to bounce back from their defeat at the weekend.

The Hammers were beaten 3-1 by Liverpool at Anfield in the Premier League and now have a chance to get back to winning ways against lower-league opposition.

This cup clash with the League One side will provide David Moyes with the opportunity to give players vital minutes to keep them fresh and sharp for the upcoming Europa League and English top-flight matches to come.

One player who must be unleashed from the start is summer signing Mohammed Kudus, who joined from Dutch giants Ajax, as he could form an exciting partnership with Lucas Paqueta at the top end of the pitch.

How many chances has Paqueta created this season?

West Ham's brilliant Brazilian has created eight chances in six Premier League matches to go along with one in one Europa League outing so far.

Paqueta has showcased his ability to split open the opposition's defence to create an opportunity for one of his fellow attackers and has averaged an impressive Sofascore rating of 7.43 in the top-flight.

West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta.

James Ward-Prowse (7.62) is the only outfield player at the club with a higher average league Sofascore rating, which illustrates how impressive the former Lyon man has been in the middle of the park.

Kudus could benefit from the 26-year-old's creativity as the Ghana international can potentially provide a significant goal threat for the Hammers if he can replicate his form for Ajax.

How many goals did Kudus score for Ajax?

The 23-year-old maestro scored 27 goals in 87 matches in all competitions during his time with the Dutch side and that included 18 goals in 42 games last term.

Kudus racked up 11 goals and three assists in 19 Eredivisie starts throughout the 2022/23 campaign. Meanwhile, no West Ham player produced more than six Premier League goals last season.

This suggests that the talented youngster, who was dubbed "fantastic" and a "superstar" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has the potential to be an outstanding scoring option for Moyes in the final third if he can carry that form over to English football.

West Ham forward Mohammed Kudus.

His first start against TSC in the Europa League last week showcased his threat at the top end of the pitch as the ex-Ajax star scored two goals in a 3-1 win for the Hammers.

The summer signing's outstanding full debut showed that he has what it takes to be a star within this West Ham team and it is now down to him to show that he can be consistent over the course of the season.

To do that, though, Moyes will need to offer him enough opportunities to find his rhythm and that is why the Scottish boss must unleash the Ghana international from the start this evening in order to get more minutes under his belt.

Playing him alongside a terrific creative threat like Paqueta could also provide the 5 foot 9 dynamo with the chances that he needs to find the back of the net against Lincoln.

Leeds news: Farke’s "diamond" also set to return soon alongside Spence

Leeds United are expected to have another key player available to them once again after the international break alongside Djed Spence, following a fresh update.

Which Leeds players are currently injured?

At Elland Road, Daniel Farke still has Stuart Dallas on the sidelines with his long-term injury, as well as Junior Firpo and Spence ,who also missed the 3-1 Championship defeat to Southampton on Saturday, with the three players remaining out of action as it stands.

The Whites are next set to host Queens Park Rangers in the second tier at home this evening, with kick-off scheduled for 7:45pm UK time, and whilst a return will come too soon for one other injured star in particular, there has been some encouraging news delivered.

During the 0-0 draw against Hull in September, Wilfried Gnonto was forced off the pitch following a collision and he’s since undergone surgery on his ankle problem, causing initial fears that the left-winger could be out for a significant amount of time.

According to Football Insider, Italy’s international was facing a maximum two months away from the grass following his procedure, but luckily for supporters, the manager has now shared a promising update on the fitness of the 19-year-old.

How long is Wilfried Gnonto out for?

Speaking during his pre-match press conference on Tuesday, Farke confirmed that Gnonto is expected to stage his comeback after the upcoming international break, alongside Spence, whilst also delivering updates on the duo of Firpo and Dallas.

As quoted by The Athletic's Phil Hay on X, he said: "Farke on injuries: Gnonto and Spence "everything is on track." Due back on the other side of the international break. Firpo due back in training after the break too.

"Dallas has gone back to some individual training but due to join in full training again shortly. Dallas had a very minor setback in training but should resume full training in the next few days, Farke says."

Leeds United forward Wilfried Gnonto.

How many goals has Wilfried Gnonto scored?

Since arriving at Leeds from FC Zurich last summer, Gnonto has racked up nine contributions (five goals and four assists) in 34 senior appearances which shows the positive impact he makes in the final third, therefore, it’s a huge boost for Farke that he’ll soon be ready to return to the competitive action in Yorkshire.

The Verbania native was also averaging 2.6 dribbles per game prior to his absence, alongside having recorded ten crosses so far this season which is the fourth-highest total throughout the squad, via FBRef, highlighting his desire to use his pace, take on his marker and create chances for himself and his fellow teammates in the final third.

Gnonto, who has been labelled a “diamond” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, is additionally a versatile operator having been deployed in seven various positions over the attack since the start of his career, including everywhere across the frontline and three roles in the midfield, so the £20k-per-week earner really is a joy to watch in LS11.

Jos Buttler, Dom Bess earn England calls; James Vince dropped

Ed Smith’s first squad as national selector includes a couple of big calls

Buttler selection not a snub to county cricket – Smith

Jos Buttler has earned a surprise recall to England’s Test team at the expense of James Vince, while the Somerset spinner, Dominic Bess, was the beneficiary of his team-mate Jack Leach’s misfortune, as the new national selector, Ed Smith, unveiled his squad for next week’s first Test against Pakistan.Buttler, who has not played red-ball cricket for England since the tour of India in November and December 2016, has found a rich vein of form for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL this month, with a tournament-record five consecutive half-centuries, including unbeaten scores of 95 and 94 in his last two innings.”Jos Buttler is an outstanding talent, who is already a central part of England’s white-ball teams,” Smith said. “The selection panel feels that this is the perfect moment to reintroduce Jos to Test cricket, where he has already enjoyed some success, including a stint playing as a specialist batsman at number seven. Jos is playing with great confidence and flair, and he will bring unique qualities to the Test team.”England squad for first Test v Pakistan

Joe Root (capt), Jimmy Anderson, Jonny Bairstow, Dom Bess, Stuart Broad, Jos Buttler, Alastair Cook, Dawid Malan, Ben Stokes, Mark Stoneman, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood

He will return to the middle order, with Jonny Bairstow retaining the wicketkeeper’s role and moving up the order, meaning Vince is fall guy after a winter of false dawns, in spite of a timely Championship double-century for Hampshire against Somerset on Monday. Joe Root will bat at No.3 with Dawid Malan at No. 4.Vince, who was recalled to the Test squad for the Ashes, in spite of a mediocre start to his career against Sri Lanka and Pakistan in 2016, made an attractive 83 in his first Test innings of the winter, at Brisbane in November, and signed off with 76 against New Zealand at Christchurch last month. However, in between whiles, he made just one more score of fifty in nine innings, with a propensity to get himself out when well set costing him dear.Buttler has outperformed the rest of his IPL side in May•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Bess, meanwhile, has leapfrogged to the front of England’s spinning options, in the wake of a cruel injury for Leach in the nets at Taunton next week. A fractured left thumb means he will be out of action for both Pakistan Tests, and so will be unable to back up the promise he showed on Test debut in Christchurch last month. Moeen Ali was dropped for the final Test in New Zealand and has played no red-ball cricket since due to his spell at the IPL.”Dom Bess has made an excellent start to his first-class career,” Smith said. “He has impressed everyone with his performances for Somerset and when he has been given opportunities with England representative teams. With Jack Leach missing out due to injury, the selection panel wanted to invest opportunity in a young spin bowler. Dom’s strong form, character and all-round abilities presented a compelling case for selection.Chris Woakes and Mark Wood, who was recalled in Christchurch, will compete for the final fast-bowling spot while Mark Stoneman has retained his place at the top of the order despite a lean start to the season. He had faced pressure from an in-form Nick Gubbins.Meanwhile, Malan and Tom Curran have been awarded incremental contracts based on their performances in the 2017-18 period. Malan was one of the few successes in the Ashes while Curran became a regular part of the one-day side.
