Celtic have been unable to unearth a number of stars in recent years as they have plucked out talented young prospects for modest fees before selling them for a significant profit.
Who are Celtic's most expensive sales?
The Hoops have raked in millions from player sales having proven to be an excellent landing spot for promising talents to come and showcase their ability as part of a dominant side in Scotland.

Jota
£24.9m
Kieran Tierney
£23.1m
Moussa Dembele
£18.8m

Virgil van Dijk
£13.4m
Fees via Transfermarkt.
The club's five-most expensive sales in their history highlight their ability to develop signings as only one of the five – Kieran Tierney – came through the academy system at Parkhead.
Another player whom the club, and manager at the time Ronny Deila, played a blinder with was Scottish central midfielder Stuart Armstrong, whose value soared during his time with the Hoops.
Deila, who won two Scottish Premiership titles and one League Cup in Scotland, snapped up the talented gem from Dundee United and it turned out to be an outstanding piece of business by the Norwegian tactician.
How much did Celtic pay for Stuart Armstrong?
The Hoops reportedly splashed out a fee of £1.6m to sign the technically-gifted ace from the fellow Scottish side during the January transfer window in 2015.
They had two bids rejected by Dundee United earlier that window and faced competition from Premier League team Burnley but were ultimately able to secure his services for the aforementioned figure, which was said to be too expensive for the Clarets as they backed away from a possible deal.
Celtic signed the 22-year-old after he had proven himself to be a reliable attacking outlet at Premiership level with United.
Former Dundee United midfielder Stuart Armstrong.
Armstrong racked up 21 goals and 31 assists in 150 appearances for his former club and provided a regular threat at the top end of the pitch during his final two league campaigns.
The versatile gem, who was deployed out wide or in the middle of the park, produced eight goals and seven assists in 36 Premiership matches throughout the 2013/14 season. He also managed an outstanding three goals and three assists in five SFA Cup clashes that term.
Celtic's attention was then caught by his performances during the first half of the following campaign as the central midfielder scored six goals and assisted six in 20 league matches for United, which was an average of one goal contribution every 1.67 matches – better than his average of one every 2.4 outings in 2013/14.
This convinced the Hoops to splash out £1.6m to secure his signature and it turned out to be a fantastic decision as Armstrong enjoyed a brilliant spell with the Scottish giants.
How many goals did Armstrong score for Celtic?
The Scotland international, who has been capped 43 times by his country to date, went on to score 28 goals in 144 appearances for the Bhoys during his three-and-a-half-year stint at the club.
Armstrong, however, did not enjoy the best of starts to his career with Celtic as he managed just one goal and four assists in 15 Premiership matches over the second half of the 2014/15 campaign.
The attack-minded midfield wizard got his feet under the table ahead of the 2015/16 season and went on to produce four goals and seven assists in 25 league outings for the Scottish giants.
Former Celtic midfielder Stuart Armstrong.
His best form in a Hoops shirt came during the following campaign as Brendan Rodgers arrived at the helm in 2016 and got the former Dundee United star firing.
Armstrong ended the 2016/17 term with an outstanding 15 goals and seven assists in 31 league matches for the club, which worked out as an average of one goal involvement every 1.41 outings.
In 2017, Rodgers lavished praise on the central midfielder and described him as a "powerful" player who has "everything" to his game. The Northern Irish tactician said that he was impressed by Armstrong's raw materials and went as far as to say that he was a "joy" to work with in Glasgow.
He did not hit quite the same levels the following year, as Armstrong scored three goals and provided five assists in 27 Premiership games, but that did not stop Premier League side Southampton from making a move for him.
How much did Celtic sell Armstrong for?
The Hoops eventually cashed in on Scotland international during the summer transfer window in 2018 as the Saints snapped him up for a reported fee of £7m.
Sky Sports claimed that talks over an improved contract at Parkhead had stalled with the goalscoring midfielder and that opened the door for the English club to secure his services.
The £7m fee that they received for him did, however, mean that the player's market value soared by a whopping 338% from the initial £1.6m they paid Dundee United for him during his time in Glasgow.
This shows that Deila struck gold for Celtic with his deal back in 2015 as Armstrong went on to become an excellent performer under Rodgers and earned the club a big payday just over three years later.
Where is Armstrong now?
The 31-year-old is still with Southampton and is currently playing Championship football at St. Mary's after he made 149 Premier League appearances for the club.
Armstrong produced 16 goals and 12 assists at the top level of English football and has played 175 games for the Saints in total since his move in 2018.
Football Transfers now rates his current Expected Transfer Value at €4.8m (£4.1m) with his market price having plummeted towards the twilight of his playing career.
Overall, Deila's decision to sign Armstrong from Dundee United was a shrewd one that resulted in Celtic enjoying his talents on the pitch for a number of years before raking in a big fee for his services before his value started to drop.
It also showed that there is value to be had in picking up young Scottish players from fellow Premiership teams and that the club does not always need to look abroad to find up and coming talents.

Unmukt Chand’s half-century, and Delhi’s bowlers helped the team secure a 40-run win over Rajasthan, and the Syed Mushtaq Ali title in the tournament final at the Eden Gardens. The victory marked the extension of a superb domestic season for Delhi, who made the final of the Ranji Trophy earlier this year.Having elected to bat, Delhi got off to a fine start with Gautam Gambhir (27 off 23 balls) and Rishabh Pant (13 off 7) putting on 41 runs in 4.5 overs for the first wicket. However, two balls after Gambhir was bowled by legspinner Rahul Chahar, Delhi lost Pant, too, caught behind off Khaleel Ahmed.Delhi’s recovery, though, came soon, with Chand joining the in-form Dhruv Shorey (21 off 14) for a 48-run stand. After Chahar accounted for Shorey, Nitish Rana, a success story for Mumbai Indians last year, and an attractive batting option for IPL franchises at the auction, lasted only five balls for his seven as he registered his fourth consecutive single-digit score.Chand, however, rallied with the lower order and was the last batsman to be dismissed, in the 20th over. In his second game in the tournament, Chand finished with four fours and two sixes. Pant finished as the joint-leading run-getter of the tournament with 411 runs, including a hundred and four fifties at a strike-rate 195.71, while Shorey finished with 303 runs in seven innings at a strike-rate a shade under 142. Gambhir, though, had an underwhelming tournament with 172 runs in eight innings.Rajasthan’s chase was largely held together by Aditya Garhwal, who made a 36-ball 52 and was dismissed by seamer Lalit Yadav in the 12th over. His wicket triggered a collapse as Rajasthan slipped from 93 for 3 to 96 for 7 in less than two overs. Two of those wickets were picked up by left-arm seamer Kulwant Khejroliya, whose steep bouncer pushed Chetan Bist back and hit on the helmet, causing him to fall on to the stumps.Khejroliya finished as the joint fourth-highest wicket-taker of the tournament with 14 wickets in 10 matches. Shorey, Chand and Khejroliya have set their reserve prices at INR 20 lakh. Delhi captain Pradeep Sangwan finished with two wickets to take his tournament tally to 13 wickets, while left-arm spinner Pawan Negi took 2 for 21 to end with 11 scalps. Negi and Sangwan have set their reserve prices at INR 50 lakh and 30 lakh respectively.Sangwan credited his bowlers for the victory. “We just spoke in the dressing room that we need our bowlers to step up,” he said after the match. He also credited the presence of past captains like Chand and Pant. “Their presence helps when it comes to setting fields. When I concede runs while bowling, Rishabh and Unmukt help in setting fields.”

England will play their first three-Test series in Sri Lanka in 11 years, but the tour – which also features five ODIs and a T20I – may also clash with the island’s northeast monsoon.England’s tour of Sri Lanka 2018
Oct 10 – First ODI, Dambulla Oct 13 – Second ODI, Dambulla Oct 17 – Third ODI, Pallekele Oct 20 – Fourth ODI, Pallekele Oct 23 – Fifth ODI, Khettarama (Colombo) Oct 27 – Only T20I, Khettarama Nov 6-10 – First Test, Galle Nov 14-18 – Second Test, Pallekele Nov 23-27 – Third Test, SSC
The matches will be played in Dambulla, Galle, Kandy and Colombo, with the SSC set to host the only Colombo Test. As it is the Tests – set for November – are more likely to be affected by rain than the limited-overs games, which end by October.SLC generally only hosts sides in November if there is no alternative, and given both teams’ busy 2018 schedule, that does appear to be the case. November Tests were last played in Sri Lanka in 2012, when both matches against New Zealand yielded results. However the previous series that began in November – the 2010 Tests against West Indies – were infamously rain-affected, and all three games ended in draws. The ODI series kicks off the tour on October 10, before the one-off T20I is played on the 27th of that month. There are then nine days before the first Test – time perhaps for England to play at least one warm-up encounter. The Test series begins in Galle on November 6, then moves to Pallekele, before the tour finishes up in Colombo.England last played Tests in Sri Lanka in early 2012, that two-match series finishing 1-1. Their most-recent three-Test tour of the island was in 2007.
Glasgow Rangers haven’t enjoyed the best of starts to the campaign, winning only 50% of their matches so far during 2023/24.
Defeats to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League qualifiers was then followed by a woeful 1-0 loss to Celtic during the first Old Firm tie of the Premiership season, and it surely gives Brendan Rodgers' side an advantage in the title race already.
There have been few things to get excited about for the supporters, yet one player who seems to be rejuvenated this term is Rabbi Matondo.
How has Rabbi Matondo performed this season?
The Welsh winger failed to hit the ground running last term, managing to register just five assists across 28 matches, and it appeared that his Gers career was over before it really began.
Instead of seeking a move away from Ibrox, he knuckled down and worked hard during pre-season and has so far gotten his reward.
Seven appearances so far this season have yielded two goals and an assist, with his strike against PSV his first for the club.
Rangers forward Rabbi Matondo.
It has represented a massive turnaround for the player who looked out of the picture towards the end of 2022/23.
With Ryan Kent and Fashion Sakala leaving Glasgow during the summer transfer window, Matondo has a chance to cement a regular spot on the left side of the attack, or even alongside another forward depending on which system Michael Beale deploys.
However, what the manager would give for a former Light Blues gem who would most certainly be a key player under the current regime; Peter Lovenkrands.
How much did Peter Lovenkrands cost Rangers?
Under Dick Advocaat, the Gers had resumed their dominance of Scottish football, winning back-to-back titles in 1998/99 and 1999/00. In fact, the club had won five out of six domestic trophies on offer for the Dutchman, and it appeared they weren’t going anywhere.
Advocaat made a few more signings during the summer of 2000, luring players such as Fernando Ricksen, Kenny Miller, and Bert Konterman, while Tore Andre Flo joined in November from Chelsea.
Peter Lovenkrands for Rangers
It was the signing of Lovenkrands however, who would outlast every single one of Advocaat’s signings and turn into a key player for the Glasgow side over the coming years.
The Dane cost just £1.3m from Akademisk Boldklub, which in relation to the fees they were shelling out for other players, £12m on Flo for example, it represented a wonderful bargain on a youngster who would only get better.
How good was Peter Lovenkrands?
It took time for the player to settle in at Ibrox, making just nine appearances in his debut season, failing to score or grab an assist, but he stuck in and soon became a major part of the Alex McLeish rein, as the former Aberdeen defender took over from Advocaat in December 2001.
Featuring either on the left wing or as a centre-forward, as the aforementioned Matondo can, Lovenkrands’ pace was his main weapon, while he also began to show a keen eye for goal and this quality soon paid off during the 2002 Scottish Cup final.
Not only did the Denmark international net the equaliser, but in the dying embers of a captivating match, he popped up to head a winner past Rab Douglas in the Celtic goal to secure a famous win.
It ensured the balance of power was swinging back in favour of Rangers following a tough 18 months, playing second fiddle to a resurgent Celtic side under Martin O’Neil and his goal was the catalyst for change.
The 2002/03 season saw him score nine league goals while also netting against Celtic in the League Cup final and these goals against their Old Firm rivals were beginning to become a regular habit.
Indeed, during his six seasons at Ibrox, Lovenkrands was lethal against their Old Firm rivals, not only scoring twice against them in cup finals, but also grabbing two goals against the Hoops in the league.
Totally hypothetical, of course, but Matondo would be largely forgotten if Beale was able to rely on a peak Lovenkrands to strike fear into opponents via his wonderful abilities on the wing. He would certainly chip in with key goals throughout the campaign, absolutely no doubt about it.
What happened to Peter Lovenkrands?
He enriched himself further into Ibrox folklore by scoring the equaliser against Inter Milan during the final matchday of the 2005/06 Champions League campaign which saw the Gers become the first Scottish side to make the knockout rounds.
In total, he scored 18 goals and registered nine assists that term, which attracted the attention of other clubs, and he joined Schalke on a pre-contract deal, ending his six-year stint in Scotland.
It didn’t quite work out for him in Germany and a move to Newcastle United in 2009 saw Lovenkrands back on British soil.
Former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer was full of praise for the forward when he arrived at the club, saying: “I know he made a big impression when he first came here, and I thought he started well against Chelsea before he had the injury.
“He can play in a few positions, and has scored a couple of important goals. If we need him, hopefully he can do the same again.”
High praise indeed from one of the finest strikers to emerge from England, and it proved that the Dane could shine out of Scotland.
The former Gers star is still fondly remembered by supporters of a certain vintage and there have been times in the last few years when a prime Lovekrands is dearly needed, particularly now.
Unfortunately, Beale doesn’t have the luxury of being able to call upon him to slot into his system, but if he did, the Gers may well have defeated Celtic a few weeks ago.
Having won two titles and a handful of domestic cups, Lovenkrands knows what it takes to succeed at the Light Blues and his wisdom would surely be greatly received by those who are currently trying to claim a first title since 2021 this season.

– Fizemosum primeiro tempo primoroso.
