Tottenham: Postecoglou Could Sign £50m "Handful" To Make Maddison Unplayable

Tottenham Hotspur have enjoyed a brief transfer break as the Premier League season has got back underway, but they could be set to return with a bang, adding another attacker to underpin the hopeful longevity of the new reign…

Who else could Tottenham Hotspur sign this summer?

With Ange Postecoglou now nearly three months into the job, his impact on the north London club is already vast.

With eight new additions having been made, including turning some loans into permanent deals, his transfer dealings have altered the mindset and makeup of a side reeling after last season's disaster. And yet, in just two league matches, his influence on the pitch has been equally as monumental, showcased in their fine displays against both Brentford and Manchester United.

However, having overseen a few competitive matches, perhaps the Australian boss could seek to supplement those who have stood out with some new faces that would help improve their chances of shining further.

That is clearly the case with their reported interest in Brennan Johnson, as the Daily Mail suggests Spurs are readying a bid for the Nottingham Forest winger.

He is valued at around £50m by the Tricky Trees, but it is expected that Daniel Levy will negotiate hard to cut this down.

How good is Brennan Johnson?

To touch back on that earlier sentiment, and bringing in such a dynamic, pacey winger would likely have the greatest benefit on James Maddison, given how blistering a start he has enjoyed since his June move.

Signing from Leicester City for £40m, many might have questioned the expenditure of such a mouth-watering fee despite his club having just been relegated.

However, in his opening two league matches, he has already begun paying it back.

Averaging a 7.90 rating, this is a figure buoyed by his two assists, 86% pass accuracy, 74.5 touches per game as well as 1.5 tackles and four key passes per game, via Sofascore.

It is the latter figure in particular that will catch the eye of Johnson, who will likely see every scything run in behind found by the former Midlands creator.

Not only this, but the amount of touches he averages is also conducive to his influence all over the pitch, suggesting that as long as the 22-year-old speedster keeps making the runs, he will almost always be supplemented.

Journalist Ethan Lamb sought to emphasise the pace of the wide man, writing: "Brennan Johnson has clocked the fast speed in the Premier League this season with 36.7km/h. Speed demon."

It is no surprise to see him branded a "special, special player" by fellow writer Louis Wheeldon.

To think, adding him alongside Maddison could see his numbers from last season skyrocket, where he scored eight and assisted three in the league for a Forest side that narrowly avoided the drop.

The danger that such an electric play style would bring could even help elevate the attacking midfielder to loftier heights, as the space that Johnson's mere presence would offer could prove devastating if it is the 26-year-old who takes it up.

Should he prove to be the "real handful" that journalist Antonio Mango suggested he was under Postecoglou, keeping defenders honest with his speed and ever-growing technical prowess, he could not only provide a fine outlet for Maddison to boost his numbers creatively, but also stretch defences so that the midfielder can pop up in dangerous areas to score more too.

Stoneman's WACA barrage and controversial end

Mark Stoneman was given a taste of the WACA of old during his half-century on the opening day before a controversial end to his innings.

6.1 Starc to Stoneman, no run, dug in short, Stoneman takes his bottom hand off as he fends and keeps the ball down… and this has actually broken his bat handle! That’s the second stick of Stoneman’s that has needed replacing in this seriesGetty Images

27.6 Hazlewood to Stoneman, FOUR, banged in and flashed high over backward point, he’s connected with this one, a lusty spank for four – and that’s Stoneman’s fifty, his second of the series. Can he go on?Getty Images

31.1 Hazlewood to Stoneman, no run, short ball, at the batsman – takes the blow on the side of the helmet! Yowch, that’s going to leave a ringing in the ears, though Stoneman is able to walk away and take off his lid unaided. The stem-guards popped off, as they often do, but the protective gear absorbed most of the impact, I think…Getty Images

…he needs to be checked over by the physios, but he’s walking and talking okay. Might need a replacement helmet, though… and there’ll doubtless be more short stuff to follow up, giving the issues he’s had today. Right, he’s going to continueGetty Images

37.5 Starc to Stoneman, OUT, ripping bouncer, Stoneman throws up the hands and is beaten… or is he? No, there was a flick of glove on it! Paine took a leaping catch and Australia quickly reviewed Erasmus’ not-out decision, with Aleem Dar determining that a ripple on Snicko was evidence of contact. Erasmus has to reverse the call and up goes the finger, Stoneman’s gutsy knock is over! That was a snorter, unlucky for the batsmen on several levels…Getty Images

…there’s a bit of a debate about whether the ball touched the glove on the top hand, or the bottom, which Stoneman had taken off the bat handle (and therefore couldn’t be out). The umpires are looking at it again, in fact; but after several grainy replays, it has been decided that it flicked Stoneman’s right hand and there is no reprieve. Given the confusion, you have to wonder if that was conclusive evidence to overturn the on-field decision… but there we go. England certainly aren’t happy about it

Jeetan Patel, the former New Zealand offspinner, has been named as Warwickshire’s new first-class and one-day captain, with Grant Elliott continuing to lead Birmingham Bears in the NatWest T20 Blast.Patel, 37, joined the club in 2009 and has been their overseas player across all formats since 2012, during which time he has played a part in three domestic trophies, including the County Championship in 2012, the T20 Blast in 2014, and Royal London Cup in 2016.All told, he has taken 353 first-class, 102 List A and 113 T20 wickets for the club and was named as the PCA County Most Valuable Player in both 2014 and 2016 and runner-up in 2017.His appointment comes at a difficult time for Warwickshire, who were relegated from the top flight of the County Championship last season. Ian Bell, the former club captain stood down towards the end of the season following a loss of form, and was initially replaced by his former England team-mate, Jonathan Trott.”We’re thrilled to have Jeetan returning to the club in April as our captain,” said Ashley Giles, Warwickshire’s director of sport. “He’s a true Bear, who has won all three domestic competitions at the club, and sets exceptionally high standards on and off the pitch.”In addition to being one of the best cricketers on the county circuit for several years, Jeetan has played a key role in mentoring our young spin bowlers and we believe that he will be an excellent leader as we continue our transition and build a platform for more success in the future.”Patel said: “I absolutely love playing for Warwickshire and it’s a great honour to return to Edgbaston in 2018 as club captain. When you look at the guys who have captained the club over the years and what they have achieved, it is amazing to go on that list.”It’s all about looking forward now though and working hard with the current group of players to try to create something special for the club and supporters in the years ahead. Last season was a difficult one but every club goes through transitions and the important thing is how people react. The challenge is there for us to rebuild and go again.”As part of that redevelopment, the club have named Dom Sibley as the new vice-captain, following his arrival from Surrey in August. Sibley, 22, made an immediate impact with 191 runs in seven T20 games to help the Bears to the Final of the T20 Blast, and he also scored 310 runs in six County Championship appearances.”Dom made a significant impact after joining the club at a difficult time last season and we saw some real fight and character in the innings that he played,” Giles said. “He’s fitted well into the changing room and by working closer with Jeetan, Grant and the other experienced players, we believe that he can also develop into an excellent leader.”

West Ham In The Race For "Complete" Teenage Coufal Upgrade

West Ham United are in the race to sign one of Spain’s most gifted and promising youngsters…

What’s the latest West Ham transfer news?

According to Marca Valladolid, the Irons are in a fight to sign Real Valladolid’s Ivan Fresneda, after Crystal Palace opened talks with the Spanish club with a view to making an offer.

Chelsea and Sporting CP are also said to be interested in the right-back.

As previously reported by SPORT, the 18-year-old is valued at around €15m (£13m) by Valladolid, who recently suffered relegation to La Liga 2.

Would Ivan Fresneda be a good signing for West Ham?

The defender was born in the Spanish capital, and joined Real Madrid’s youth setup in 2014, before leaving the club in 2018. He eventually signed for Valladolid in 2020, and despite only forging 26 appearances for the senior side, has firmly established himself as one of the continent’s most eye-catching talents.

This perspective has been reinforced by Matt Clark of the LaLiga Lowdown, who highlighted Fresneda’s accomplished profile and limitless potential, saying: “He is a remarkably complete right-back despite his young age, balancing his defensive duties with the odd attack too.

"He has that coveted combination of physicality and technical ability. Tall but agile, quick and athletic, he is also strong in the tackle and reads the game very well for someone so green when it comes to first-team football.”

The teen’s defensive acumen is mirrored by his rank within the best 9% in Europe’s top five leagues among his positional peers for blocks per 90 and clearances per 90, as well as the highest 21% for tackles per 90.

Moreover, The Athletic revealed he is a high-quality ball winner, winning 75% of his duels, with only one LaLiga full-back, his teammate Luis Perez, possessing a better success rate.

Following the end of last year, Fresneda was just one of seven players aged 17 or younger to play over 1,000 minutes of first-team football in Europe’s big five leagues, to signify his growing quality and importance to his team.

Ivan-Fresneda

Therefore, a player on this trajectory is more than capable of becoming a useful asset for a Premier League side. From a West Ham perspective, Fresneda can be viewed as an ageing and less dynamic Vladimir Coufal.

The 31-year-old has been a solid and reliable servant for the Hammers, having featured in 91 of the club’s last 116 domestic games.

His lack of pace, directness, and attacking threat are major drawbacks to his game, and he fails to embody the full nature of the ‘modern full-back.’

Fresneda, who played for a far worse side last year, demonstrated that he can outperform Coufal in this respect. Over the past 365 days, the prodigy scores better than the Czech for progressive carries per 90 (2.48 vs 2.37), successful take-ons per 90 (0.77 vs 0.13), and pass completion per 90 (77% vs 62.2%).

Whilst his offensive output isn’t prolific, as he failed to record any assists last term, this is mainly due to the lack of quality in Valladolid forwards, who managed just 33 goals in the league, the second-lowest in the division.

Therefore, Fresneda, who has been hailed as someone with “good technique” and “great energy” by Emmanuel Petit, could flourish at the London Stadium.

Aston Villa: Philippe Coutinho Future Update

Aston Villa have now been provided with an update regarding Philippe Coutinho's future, with two clubs battling it out for the attacking midfielder…

Is Philippe Coutinho leaving Aston Villa?

Coutinho's time at Villa Park is all but over, with Unai Emery recently revealing he is willing to sanction the attacking midfielder's departure, saying: "He is close to leaving, but we are waiting to see if the deal is complete or not. Philippe is a very good person and always we have to respect him as a person, firstly.

"Secondly, as a player, he has played at a very high level. He has not been consistent because of injuries and we decided with him, speaking and agreeing with him to try that if something is good for him, and good for the club, and for the squad, we can let him leave."

In the same report, it is detailed the Brazilian was close to completing a move to Al Duhail, of the Qatar Stars League, with the key terms of the deal being agreed – but there has now been an indication that another team could attempt a late hijack.

According to a report from Turkish outlet Fanatik, Besiktas have now stepped up their attempts to sign the 31-year-old, who they have wanted to sign since the beginning of the summer transfer window, though it will not be easy.

Although the Villa ace would be keen on a move to Besiktas, the Turkish Super Lig side will have to do battle with Al Duhail, who are able to offer him more money, which could end up being a decisive factor.

However, one advantage the Black Eagles may have in the race for the midfielder's signature is the offer of European football, with Besiktas in the group stages of the Europa Conference League.

The Turkish club are now in the process of convincing the former Barcelona man to make the move, but they have submitted a lower offer than Al Duhail, so it remains to be seen whether he is tempted.

How good is Philippe Coutinho?

There is no denying the Besiktas target is a top-quality player on his day, having been lauded as "fantastic" by members of the media, and he has put in some impressive performances in a Villa shirt, particularly when he first moved to the club.

Back in February 2022, the one-time £146m player weighed in with a goal and two assists in the Villans' 3-3 draw against Leeds United, before going on to pick up another two goal contributions in a 4-0 victory against Southampton.

Aston Villa forward Philippe Coutinho.

However, that was a long time ago now, and the Rio de Janeiro-born attacker flattered to deceive last season, recording just one goal and zero assists in a total of 20 Premier League games, so it is without doubt time he moved on.

After losing on the opening day, Villa have won their last four games on the spin in all competitions, with Emery's side showing they are more than capable of playing well without Coutinho, who will be hoping to reignite his career if he moves to Besiktas.

Dhoni still No. 1 wicketkeeper in the world – Prasad

MSK Prasad, India’s chairman of selectors, effectively confirmed MS Dhoni’s spot in the 2019 World Cup squad, although Dhoni’s place has been under scrutiny recently

Arun Venugopal24-Dec-2017

Punit Paranjpe/AFP

MS Dhoni has effectively been guaranteed a spot in the 2019 World Cup, about 18 months away, after the chairman of selectors MSK Prasad gave a resounding appraisal of the ” No.1 wicketkeeper in the world”. While this is the first time a selector has made a definitive statement on Dhoni’s participation in the World Cup, it is not yet a given that Prasad himself will be selecting the squad for the tournament.According to media reports, the selection committee, comprising Prasad, Sarandeep Singh and Devang Gandhi, has been given a temporary extension until the BCCI’s next Annual General Meeting. A selector’s contract is renewed annually and his tenure runs for a maximum of four years. Prasad, who first became a selector in Sandeep Patil’s committee in November 2015 before taking over as chairman the following year, can technically remain a selector till late 2019, if he is granted an extension.Meanwhile, Prasad’s remarks came four months after he had declared Dhoni wasn’t an automatic selection anymore. However, in hailing Dhoni’s near-indispensability, Prasad also acknowledged India’s lack of success in unearthing a suitable wicket-keeping alternative.Prasad’s change in heart has also been guided by Dhoni’s eye-catching performances behind the stumps, a facet that Prasad has often felt is overshadowed by what he does with the bat. “I think MS Dhoni is still remains the number one wicketkeeper in the World,” he told reporters after announcing India’s squad for the six-match ODI series in South Africa in February. “And, day in and day out we have been seeing, even in the current T20 series [against Sri Lanka] the stumpings that he does, the caught-behinds that he takes are phenomenal, there is no comparison. I don’t see any wicketkeeper, who is even close to him in world cricket, forget Indian cricket.”It is not as if the selectors haven’t looked at other options, but they have hardly been given a run at the international level. Rishabh Pant, for one, was seen as a possible back-up option when he was picked for the limited-overs tour of West Indies. Unfortunately for him and the selection panel, Pant has since endured an extended poor run with the bat. An underwhelming tour to South Africa with the India A side was followed by modest returns of 3 runs from two List A games against New Zealand A at home. He has had a middling run in the Ranji Trophy as well with 262 runs from seven innings, including a solitary fifty. Meanwhile, Dinesh Karthik, the other likely contender, has been picked for India in limited-overs cricket, but is looked at solely as a middle-order batsman. While Prasad didn’t name anyone in particular, he mentioned none of the emerging wicketkeepers had met the standards required of playing at the highest level. However, he said the selection committee would continue to try different options in India A tours to ensure they identify suitable talents. “We are grooming some wicket-keepers in India A tours. More or less we have fixed up [our] mind till the World Cup and after that at later stages we will start grooming some of those wicketkeepers in India A tours,” he said. “Let me tell you frankly that still those boys are not up to the levels that we have expected. We will still keep giving them chances in the India A tours and see that they are nurtured.”
