Suresh Raina has been ruled out of the first ODI against New Zealand in Dharamsala on October 16 due to a bout of viral fever. The BCCI has not named a replacement for him in the side.Raina’s illness had affected his participation in Uttar Pradesh’s Ranji Trophy opener against Madhya Pradesh last week. Raina was named captain of the UP side, but did not bat in both innings as the team lost by an innings and 64 runs.Raina, who last played an ODI for India in October, 2015, had been recalled to the squad for the first three matches of the five-ODI series against New Zealand. MSK Prasad, India’s chairman of selectors, had said that Raina’s ability as a part-time spin bowler was one of the factors behind his recall as the team’s frontline spinners, R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, had been rested for the matches.Raina was left out of India’s ODI squads for the tours of Australia (December-January) and Zimbabwe, and also missed the two T20Is against West Indies in the USA. In between, he had a disappointing run in the Asia Cup and the World T20. In the Asia Cup T20s, Raina scored 39 runs in three innings, and followed that with 41 runs in four innings at the World T20. Before his exclusion from the ODI team last December, Raina had managed only one century in the format in 26 innings.
The weather forecast for the Hobart Test indicates reverse swing will be less of a factor than it was in Perth

Faf du Plessis said both sides found reverse swing in Perth•Cricket Australia/Getty Images
The week leading up to the Hobart Test has been dominated by talk of contrasting success with reverse swing. Australia, through Josh Hazlewood, have made clear their envy of South Africa’s ability to get the ball moving. South Africa, through Dean Elgar. have admitted their attack enjoys the reverse-swinging ball but distanced themselves from having any special ability to get the ball to scuff up.Now Faf du Plessis has rendered the debate irrelevant, with his verdict that he does not think reverse-swing will come into play in Hobart.”Perth was really dry, the wicket was hard. That second new ball we took on the last day, it was three overs in and there were big chunks out of the ball,” du Plessis said. “Here will be different. It’s lush, it’s green, it’s soft, it’s wet. It will seam and swing, it won’t reverse that much.”Rain is forecast for the first three days of the match but on the off chance things dry up, du Plessis said he believed Australia were just as capable of working on the ball. He knows as much from personal experience, having faced a reverse-swinging ball as early as the 25th over in Perth.”To say it was only for us is definitely not true,” du Plessis said. “I faced a brilliant spell from Starc, bowling around the wicket, reversing the ball a hell of a lot. It was extremely difficult. I think it was exactly split down the middle 50-50 in terms of reverse.”We were watching the first innings and they got the ball to reverse in the 25th over. I was quite impressed. I was trying to see how they were doing that because it meant they were getting something right. They were getting it to go early.”The difference, according to du Plessis, was in how the two batting line-ups fared. “We had batters that were in and batted for long periods of time,” he said. “When you’ve got big partnerships, it just looks easier. I remember in the second innings I came in and the first ball nipped and swung and I was like, ‘What is going on here? These guys have got a partnership of about 300, it should be a lot easier than this’.”If you get a wicket, reverse-swing will always be more difficult for guys coming in. That’s a fact. They just lost more wickets, that’s why it was a little bit harder for them.”But now that the series has moved on, du Plessis does not want to dwell too much on reverse-swing and focus instead on seam movement and conventional swing, which will come into play at the Bellerive Oval. “I think, to be really honest, it’s been blown out of proportion a little bit,” he said.

Liverpool are in the market for reinforcements this summer as Jurgen Klopp looks to freshen up a side that looks set for major changes heading into next term.
Roberto Firmino, Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have already left the club upon the expiration of their contracts, signifying that both midfield and striking positions will need to be replenished in the summer window.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Alexis Mac Allister is set to sign for the Reds, as he updated his Twitter following, stating: "Liverpool have just signed Alexis Mac Allister for… £35m. Reds have now triggered the clause to sign the midfielder after medical tests completed with Brighton’s permission. Documents are being signed. Here we go confirmed."
Another man that Liverpool have been linked with to bolster their midfield is Southampton man Romeo Lavia and they are said to have contacted the South Coast club over the prospect of being able to acquire the 19-year-old, as per Football Insider.
What's the latest transfer news involving Romeo Lavia?
The Football Insider report also states that Lavia's former club, Manchester City, have a buyback clause worth £40 million to purchase the Belgium international; however, this doesn't become active until the summer of 2024.
Speaking to Football FanCast, Redmen TV pundit Ste Hoare has endorsed Liverpool signing Lavia to boost their midfield options and thinks that the talent would be a good fit at Anfield.
Hoare told FFC: "Manchester City have this buyback clause, don't they, in 2024, so you want to get him, you might have to do it now because they might be the only chance you can do. I don't think he's going to stay in the Championship. I think he's too good. My guess is he'll be on the move. Of all the players who went down, I think he'd be the one I would most like Liverpool to sign, he fits into what we do."
Liverpool definitely have the opportunity to get one over their Premier League rivals by signing Lavia, who gained plenty of first-team experience in 2022/23 with Southampton, making 35 appearances in all competitions, registering one goal and one assist apiece, as per Transfermarkt.
Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia.
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola paid tribute to the midfielder in April in an interview and detailed why he was let go at the Etihad Stadium to join Southampton, stating: “I am really impressed with what Romeo has done and is doing. We had, and we have, an incredible opinion about him. We thought to keep him, but maybe he would not (get) enough minutes like he has in Southampton."
As per WhoScored, Lavia showed plenty of promise at St Mary's during this campaign and managed to record a pass success rate of 86.4%, illustrating his reliability in possession.
FBRef also take into account that the £25k-a-week earner excels in comparison to his positional peers across Europe's top five divisions regarding successful blocks, having made 1.90 per 90 minutes in the last 365 days, putting him in the fourth percentile for this metric.
According to the same outlet, Lavia, who has been hailed as a "monster", has also made 93 tackles and interceptions combined in 2022/23, demonstrating his capacity to get stuck in and turn over phases of play for his side.
Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes talked up Lavia's abilities as a deep-lying midfielder last year, as per BT Sport via The Daily Mail, saying: ‘He has got a pass in his locker and he is big and strong and likes to defend. He does not want to get forward too much and sits in-front of the back four and sets the play in motion from there.’
Liverpool need young talent to help phase out some of their ageing midfielders and Lavia could be someone that could become a key player in the coming seasons at Anfield.
Everton were close to reaching an agreement to bring AS Roma striker Tammy Abraham back to the Premier League, according to reports.
Is Tammy Abraham leaving AS Roma?
The Chelsea academy graduate’s contract at the Stadio Olimpico isn’t set to expire for another three years, but having established himself as Jose Mourinho’s second best-performing offensive player last season, has caught the eye of Sean Dyche, and not for the first time.
Back in March, iNews reported that the Toffees had an approach for the 25-year-old rejected, with Forzaroma.info later claiming that they were in pole position to secure his services should he depart, a situation that could well have been about to occur.
The Goodison Park outfit were believed to be ready to make a second attempt for the centre-forward after learning that the Serie A side could be forced to cash in on some of their prized assets due to Financial Fair Play regulations, but any kind of deal that was in the pipeline is now firmly off as a result of unforeseen circumstances.
Are Everton signing Abraham?
According to Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport (via The Liverpool Echo on June 14 at 15:37pm), Everton were "close to signing" Abraham this summer. The Merseyside outfit were in "advanced negotiations" to recruit the striker with the specified transfer fee being £34.2m. However, after the England star sustained a serious ACL injury, he's facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines and therefore will remain at AS Roma.
AS Roma striker Tammy Abraham.
Everton will be aware that Abraham already has plenty of experience under his belt in England having not only played for Chelsea but also Bristol City, Swansea City and Aston Villa which will be an attractive attribute to Dyche, and considering the prolific threat he could add in the final third, he would be a fantastic signing if ever he did join.
The ROOF client, who’s sponsored by Nike, posted 12 goal contributions (eight goals and four assists) in 38 Serie A appearances last season and had 28 shots on target from 62 which was the highest success rate throughout his squad, via FBRef. This kind of form having seen him previously dubbed a “goal machine” by ex-professional Stephen Elliot.
Finally, Abraham standing at 6 foot 2 would make him the ideal target man up top and he was averaging 2.1 aerial wins per league game during the previous term, so despite a deal not being up for grabs this window, this is a move that should definitely be revisited in January 2024.

West Ham United are looking to bolster their attack this summer as they prepare for life in the Europa League…
What is the latest on Harvey Barnes to West Ham United?
According to transfer insider Dean Jones, the east London outfit are in the early stages of figuring out a deal for Leicester City winger Harvey Barnes, and it's thought that they are in a good position to submit a proposal.
Jones told GiveMeSport:
"I think it's like early, early moves to figure out what the deal for Barnes would look like. It's a good moment, obviously, for West Ham to make a proposal.
"They are kind of champions of Europe, in their eyes, so they could at least got a trophy to show him and a plan for the future to show him."
It was reported earlier this week that Tottenham Hotspur made a £50m proposal for both James Maddison and Barnes, but Leicester rejected the offer, clearly valuing the pair higher. £40m is expected to be enough for the latter on his own.
Is Harvey Barnes the right man for West Ham?
West Ham are in an interesting situation regarding wingers at the club.
Jarrod Bowen had a disappointing season compared to his feats the previous campaign, yet still stepped up in the big moments for the Hammers, scoring the goal that won the club its first-ever European trophy.
Said Benrahma enjoyed another strong season since his move from Brentford three seasons ago.
The Algerian winger produced 12 goals and five assists across 52 games for the club this season, recording an average rating of 6.70 according to WhoScored. His 2.22 successful take-ons per 90 was the highest he's managed in an Irons shirt and the highest any West Ham player managed to achieve this season, according to FBref.
Beyond the Englishman and Algerian international, however, the London club lack real depth, with Maxwel Cornet's injury problems limited him to just 14 league appearances, whilst Pablo Fornals was deployed out of position on the wing at points due to the lack of depth.
Barnes would come in and solve that problem.
The 25-year-old dynamo, who Sky Sports journalist Adam Bate lauded as a "huge talent", has been incredibly consistent at Leicester from an output perspective, recording at least 13 combined goals and assists in each of his last four campaigns with the Foxes.
The no.7 also excels at progressing the ball with his dribbling, with his 3.32 progressive carries per 90 this season better than both Benrahma and Bowen
The Foxes winger has a very similar statistical profile to the one that West Ham's no.20 produced throughout the 2021/22 Premier League season, which was his best season at the club.
Barnes and Bowen together could form an unstoppable duo, with their goal threat off of both wings being incredibly difficult to contain, especially when factoring in the creativity within the Irons squad from the likes of Lucas Paqueta, Fornals and Benrahma.
Due to both players' similar styles, concerns and questions could be raised about how to pair will work together, and how West Ham could set about bringing out the best in both players.
David Moyes stands on the sidelines in West Ham United's Europa Conference League clash against AEK Larnaca.
One way the club could look to address that is in the market, by bringing in a striker who excels at link-up play rather than out-and-out goal scoring, which would allow the English winger duo to focus on running in behind the opposition defence and scoring goals, in a similar vein to what Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane excelled at for a number of years at Liverpool thanks to the work of Roberto Firmino.
The Leicester winger has drawn a lot of praise throughout his career, with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp previously describing the winger as "one of the biggest talents" as well as an "unbelievable player".
Barnes is going to be a hot commodity this summer, and the Hammers will face some stiff competition to bring in the winger, but should they be able to get a deal over the line they will secure a fantastic final-third threat with his best years still ahead, and a potentially game-changing partnership between Bowen and Barnes that could fire the Irons to their goals.
