Commission to interview Sarfraz, Bindra in London

Emirates Cricket Board’s Independent Commission of Inquiry is tointerview Pakistan’s former Test cricketer Sarfraz Nawaz and I.S

Imran Naeem Ahmad06-May-2001Emirates Cricket Board’s Independent Commission of Inquiry is tointerview Pakistan’s former Test cricketer Sarfraz Nawaz and I.S.Bindra, ex-chief of the Board of Control for Cricket in India as partof investigations into allegations that Sharjah is the home of bettingand match-fixing. The interviews will take place in London in thesecond week of this month, a source who did not want to be identifiedtold Dawn on Saturday. The Commission of Inquiry comprises QC George Staple, who is thechairman and former West Indian skipper Clive Lloyd and UAE’s BrigMuhammad K. Al Mualla, both commissioners. Sir Paul Condon, head ofthe International Cricket Council’s Anti Corruption Unit, hasappointed this commission of inquiry only for Sharjah, a venue whichis now widely believed to be “unclean”.The Staple commission, the source said was in Sharjah last month onthe heels of the tri-nation tournament involving Pakistan, New Zealandand Sri Lanka. Before that, the three members of the inquiry were in England wherethey interviewed relevant people for clues. Sarfraz has said all alongthat matches played in Sharjah were fixed and claimed that the 1987World Cup semifinal between Australia and Pakistan in Lahore wasfixed, a move masterminded by Abdul Rehman Bukhatir, Chairman of theCricketers Benefit Fund Series. As a result of this allegation, Bukhatir sued Sarfraz for Rs 10million but the case was not pursued till the end. The Staplecommission feels that in the light of Justice Malik Qayyum report onbetting and match-fixing, Sarfraz may have information which would bedirectly relevant to the allegations which the commission isinvestigating. I.S. Bindra is also believed to have vital informationthat could help the commission of inquiry. The latest blow to Sharjah’s image came last month when India pulledout of the tri-nation tournament there and announced that they wouldnot compete at any off-shore venue for three years.

Bolingoli may never play for Celtic again

A mass exodus at Celtic could engulf Parkhead this summer with a number of their top players linked with the exit door.

Odsonne Edouard and Kristoffer Ajer both scored on Wednesday evening in their 4-0 romp but that could well have been their last outings at Paradise.

Both have been touted with moves to the Premier League this summer and if that does happen, incoming Celtic manager Eddie Howe will have a tough job on his hands to replace them.

On the chalkboard

Another player who could see no action under Howe is Boli Bolingoli.

The left-back departed the Bhoys on loan last summer under a cloud of controversy and following events this season, he will be fortunate to ever play for the club again.

Bolingoli decided to go on an unsanctioned trip to Spain during the height of the pandemic and failed to quarantine once he’d returned home.

Neil Lennon had no idea of the trip and even played him in a match against Kilmarnock just days after he’d returned to Glasgow.

It was a foolish move from the defender, one that not only put the whole staff at Celtic in danger but also the workforce at Killie.

He was subsequently loaned to Istanbul Basaksehir in Turkey where he was fortunate enough to enjoy a Champions League campaign.

His chances of playing for the Bhoys again will have taken a boost the moment Lennon left.

After all, he described Bolingoli as “stupid” following his moment of madness at the start of the season.

“I think it is one of the worst behaviours from an individual I have come across,” Lennon said.

“Everything has been tight and everything has been strict. He had been warned previously about travelling and he blatantly disregarded my instructions and the club’s instructions. It is a complete act of selfishness,” he added.

Bolingoli is due back in Scotland this summer but following the emergence of Adam Montgomery, the 5 foot 11 defender should be heading for the departure lounge again.

When he left last summer, a player of Montgomery’s stature would never have been a concern.

However, the 18-year-old has developed at a rapid rate this term. He has been transformed from a striker to a defender and earned his first-team debut against St Johnstone on Wednesday evening.

The teenager featured at left-back and didn’t look out of place while stepping in for Greg Taylor and Diego Laxalt.

Montgomery lasted just over an hour before he was substituted by John Kennedy having won three tackles and completed 90% of his passes.

Celtic’s reserve side may have been granted permission to compete in the Lowland League next term but his future should be in the first-team ahead of Bolingoli.

Dominic McKay must ensure 25-year-old is among the club’s exodus.

Spurs legend sets Kane departure date

Tottenham Hotspur legend Graham Roberts has told The Transfer Tavern that if Harry Kane is sold by the club this summer, it will happen in the final week of the transfer window.

Kane has been at the centre of the back pages in recent days following a report from Sky Sports claiming that he has asked to leave the club in the coming transfer window.

There is said to be interest from Manchester United, Manchester City, and Chelsea, but any deal to extricate Kane from north London will surely be immensely expensive.

The striker still has to play the final game of the season, against Leicester City, a game in which Spurs could seal qualification for Europe.

He will then captain England in the European Championships, attempting to end the nation’s 55-year trophy drought.

As a result, Roberts believes that if he does leave the club, he will only move in the final days of the window.

Speaking to TT, he said: “But you know, he will give 100% for the football club. He’s got one more game. And then you’ve got the European Championships.

“So, you know, we’ll see what happens. If he is going to be sold, it won’t be until the last week of the transfer deadline.”

Deane urges Abraham to join Leicester City

In an exclusive interview with The Transfer Tavern, former Leicester City striker Brian Deane has urged Tammy Abraham to ditch Stamford Bridge for the King Power this summer.

The Chelsea forward has barely featured following Thomas Tuchel’s arrival in January and is now being linked with a move away from the club.

And, according to Fabrizio Romano, Leicester are one outfit who are interested in signing Abraham should Chelsea decide to sell him in the next transfer window.

£36m-rated Abraham really impressed last season, scoring 15 goals in the Premier League as he was finally given the chance to lead the line for the Blues following loan spells at Aston Villa and Swansea City.

On the rumours that Abraham could join Leicester in the summer, Deane told TT:

“They’ve got players like [Youri] Tielemans and the rest of them. It would be a fantastic place for someone like Tammy Abraham, to be honest. They’ll have Kelechi Iheanacho, they’ll have [Jamie] Vardy and they’ll have him. I mean, for me, if I was a young forward, I’d love to play under Brendan Rodgers.”

With Abraham struggling for game time and Chelsea continuing to be linked to big-name forwards like Sergio Aguero, a Stamford Bridge exit for the England international is starting to look inevitable.

West Brom lucky to have Maitland-Niles

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, former West Brom midfielder Carlton Palmer believes his old side were lucky to get Ainsley Maitland-Niles on loan from Arsenal.

Maitland-Niles joined the Baggies on a short-term deal in the last transfer window and has featured regularly in his preferred midfield position under Sam Allardyce.

Wanting to play in the middle of the park is something the 23-year-old has publicly spoken about, and he is now getting the opportunity to do just that at the Hawthorns.

Even so, Palmer does not expect the loanee to extend his stay at West Brom due to what looms ahead for the Midlands club.

When asked by TT whether he could see £35,000-a-week man Maitland-Niles dropping down to the Championship next season, the ex-West Brom player said:

“No. I mean, to be fair, West Brom were lucky to get him out because he was in the Arsenal team playing very, very well. And I think [Mikel] Arteta was a bit reluctant to let him go.

“He’s a good player; he’s a really good player. I don’t see why it would be in his interest to drop in the Championship. He can play in the Premier League, and can play well in the Premier League.”

Whatever happens, on an individual level, Maitland-Niles can be pleased with how this loan spell has gone.

At the Hawthorns, the England international has managed to get regular game time and in his favourite position. Prior, he had been used at right-back, where he still managed to impress some, including Jamie Carragher.

Wolves fans buzz as Corbeanu in squad

Many Wolves fans have been left to laud some confirmed team news from Tim Spiers ahead of their game versus Sheffield United in the Premier League.

As per a tweet from The Athletic journalist, Theo Corbeanu will be part of the squad, with Nuno Espirito Santo claiming that they will use him if they can.

The Canada international has enjoyed a great season in the Premier League 2 so far, scoring five goals and making a further two assists in 17 matches in total (Transfermarkt), and will certainly be looking for a breakthrough into the first team given the current injury to Raul Jimenez.

Looking like the latter could be out for the rest of the term, the 18-year-old striker will more than relish the opportunities that he is given from now until the end of the campaign.

Hernandez tipped to leave Leeds

Former Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips has tipped Pablo Hernandez to leave Leeds United at the end of the season following a great career at Elland Road.

The Spaniard joined the Whites back in January 2017 following an initial loan spell and has arguably become a modern-day legend at the club, with journalist Phil Hay once describing him as ‘unreal’.

Hernandez has made 172 appearances for Leeds to date, scoring 36 goals and registering 41 assists, not to mention helping Marcelo Bielsa’s side get back into the Premier League. Now 36, however, he has only made two league starts this season, and it appears as though his time at Elland Road is reaching its conclusion.

Phillips expects Hernandez to leave Leeds

That’s certainly the opinion of one-time Premier League Golden Boot winner Phillips, who told Football Insider that he expects Hernandez to depart once the season ends:

“I think Hernandez will leave in the summer. From the players point of view, he is not getting any younger. He will want to go somewhere and play.

“He’s a brilliant player but there is too many players ahead of him in the pecking order at Leeds. I think he will want to play football and if he is not guaranteed that at Leeds, which he is not, I think he will look to go and play somewhere else.

“He could be a great signing for a team looking to get out of the Championship or a team dropping down to the Championship this season.

“He’s very talented on the ball so he could turn out to be a good signing. I will be interested to see where he ends up this summer.”

Transfer Tavern take

Considering that Hernandez’s current deal expires in 2022, this is the last chance for Leeds to earn a fee for his services, so allowing him to leave makes sense.

They could simply let his contract run down, but the midfielder may not be happy with less playing time next season and the club would lose out on transfer funds this summer.

What Hernandez has achieved at Leeds should never be forgotten, but as is the case with any player, there comes a point when you have to part ways, for the good of all parties.

Man United hit with triple injury blow

Manchester United’s attacking injury woes are set to continue this weekend, with as many as three attacking stars set to be ruled out for their FA Cup quarter-final meeting with Leicester City.

Ahead of the match, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed that Marcus Rashford is set to miss the game having been withdrawn at half-time against AC Milan on Thursday, whilst Anthony Martial and Edinson Cavani are doubts having been suffering with their own respective injury problems.

Should none of the trio be fit enough for the trip to the east Midlands, it leaves the Red Devils extremely thin on the ground when it comes to attacking options.

It would likely lead Solskjaer to deploying the likes of Mason Greenwood, Daniel James and Amad Diallo in an attacking trio in what would be a huge downgrade for the Red Devils.

Of course, the three are talented young players but they have not managed to get anywhere near the output of Rashford, Cavani or Martial throughout the 2020/21 campaign. Between them this season, the three have managed to score 32 goals, whilst notching 17 assists in all competitions, a huge contribution.

Meanwhile, James, Greenwood and Diallo can only boast ten goals and five assists combined. As a matter of fact, the injured trio’s impact this season is even more telling that, without their goals, United would be 16 points worse off in the Premier League table. This would leave the Red Devils on 41 points and firmly marooned in mid-table.

It goes without saying that United’s attacking threat will be hugely reduced at the King Power Stadium and that is certainly not what the Red Devils need as they travel to a Leicester side who have only conceded one goal in the FA Cup so far this season.
