Celtic: Hoops monitoring Kerr Smith

Celtic, along with the likes of Crystal Palace and Leicester City, are monitoring Dundee United defender Kerr Smith, according to The Scottish Sun.

The Lowdown: Smith profiled

Smith is just 16 years of age and is under contract with his current employers for a further two years.

He’s made seven senior appearances for The Tangerines, two of which have come this season – he has been described as ‘fantastic’ by teammate Mark Connolly.

The Scot actually spent a week with Manchester United last year on trial, and it seems as if he could be on the move for good before the end of the month.

The Latest: Monday report

The Scottish Sun shared a story regarding Kerr on Monday lunchtime.

Within their report, they labelled Southampton as the frontrunners for the Scot and claimed that Celtic, Palace, Leeds and Leicester are all tracking the defender.

It seems as if the Hoops are weighing up a potential late swoop for Smith, even though they are also closing in on Shamrock Rovers defender Liam Scales in a deal worth £500,000.

The Scottish Sun are expecting the Dundee United board to move Smith on over the next six days.

The Verdict: Hjelde replacement?

Celtic look set to lose a young centre-back to Leeds in Leo Hjelde, so perhaps Smith could come in to replace the Norwegian going forward.

Smith is regarded as one of Scotland’s best young talents, so down the line, winning the race for the 16-year-old could turn out to be a real coup.

It seems as if Celtic will have to beat a number of Premier League clubs to his services, though, so it could be a big ask in the final days of the window.

New South Wales have called on the fast bowlers Aaron Bird and Burt Cockley after their attack took a couple of injury hits ahead of the FR Cup game against Queensland in Cairns on Saturday. The Blues have named a 12-man squad that does not feature Moises Henriques or Mark Cameron, both of whom had been expected to play. The destructive Cameron, who was part of the Australia A tour of India last month, has struggled to get over an ankle injury he picked up during the Blues’ recent Sheffield Shield game in Perth. Henriques, the promising allrounder who spent time with Australia’s squad in Darwin in September, has battled a side injury in the past few weeks and remains unable to bowl.It could mean a possible one-day debut for Cockley, the right-arm fast-medium bowler who played his sole first-class match late last summer. Bird had been chosen in the squad for the opening FR Cup match of the season but was left out of the starting line-up.The Blues began their campaign with a tight victory against Western Australia last week. They will be taking on a Queensland outfit that features the Australia one-day players Andrew Symonds and James Hopes, but lost to Tasmania at the Gabba on Wednesday.FR Cup squad Phillip Hughes, Peter Forrest, Daniel Smith (wk), Dominic Thornely (capt), Steven Smith, David Warner, Steve O’Keefe, Grant Lambert, Nathan Hauritz, Nathan Bracken, Aaron Bird, Burt Cockley.

Abdur Razzak, the Bangladesh left-arm spinner, has been reported for a suspect bowling action. Daryl Harper and Asoka de Silva, the umpires for the two-Test series between Bangladesh and New Zealand which finished on Wednesday, said they had concerns over Razzak’s faster ball and hence requested the ICC to review his action. The ICC will obtain three copies of the relevant footage, one of which will be kept by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Razzak will undergo an independent analysis of his action by a member of the ICC panel of human movement specialists, appointed in consultation with the BCB. If his action remains suspect during the analysis, he faces a ban and will have to remedy his action. If the analysis confirms the umpires’ suspicions of only a specific delivery – in this case the faster one – he can continue to bowl in international cricket but faces a ban if reported again. This is the second time Razzak has been reported for the same offence in his career. The first instance was during an Asia Cup match against Pakistan in Colombo in 2004 in what was only his second one-day international.Razzak took five wickets in the Tests against New Zealand at an expensive 45.60 runs per wicket.

Wolves: Rafa Mir offered to Barcelona

Jorge Mendes has offered Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Rafa Mir to Spanish giants FC Barcelona, according to Sport.

The lowdown

Mir has only ever made four appearances for Wolves’ first team and spent last season on loan at La Liga side SD Huesca.

He scored 16 goals in all competitions last season, a return that’s seen his transfer value climb to €12million (£10.2million).

Mir earned a call-up to the Spain squad for the Tokyo Olympics and netted a hat-trick in their 5-2 quarterfinal victory over Ivory Coast.

Celta Vigo president Carlos Mourino has described him as a ‘magnificent player’ and predicted that he will attract interest from ‘many teams’.

The latest

Mir is said to be keen on a return to La Liga, with Wolves ‘ready to do business’ as well.

Barcelona ‘knocked back’ Mendes’ first approach on behalf of his client, but his form since has ‘brought him back to the table’.

Indeed, Mir could potentially fill the gap left by Martin Braithwaite, who’s expected to leave imminently.

Intriguingly, the report also adds that Wolves would consider doing a swap deal with Barcelona, but it ‘remains to be seen’ who from the Catalan outfit would be included.

The verdict

Mir is into the final year of his contract, so if he sees his future elsewhere, it makes sense for Wolves to cash in now.

On the potential swap deal, what’s intriguing is that Wolves have already been linked with Braithwaite. Barcelona apparently want around £12.9million, which seems close enough to Mir’s valuation for a deal to be done.

Braithwaite could be a short-term partner for Raul Jimenez before making way for Fabio Silva when the teenager has developed.

In other news, fans fumed over this pre-season moment.

Super Smith, a double bluff and a mix-up

Andrew Miller presents the plays of the fourth day of the third Test at Edgbaston

Innings of the day
At Lord’s in the first Test, Graeme Smith reprised his double-century in 2003 with a second-innings century that guided his side to safety. Here at Edgbaston, he exceeded that feat with the performance of his life. While his team-mates stumbled around him, Smith summoned the indomitable spirit that cemented his legend five years ago, and dragged his bruised team to an incredible victory. On a day when Monty Panesar was spitting out of the left-hander’s rough, he played the spinner with supreme judgment and technique, assessing length in an instant and picking off his runs almost exclusively on the leg side. He was untroubled by the sightscreen issues that dogged the right-handers, and by the fading light as well, as he produced the finest second-innings century in England since Graham Gooch beat the West Indians in 1991.Sidekick of the day
Mark Boucher’s career has been building towards a day like this. No-one in the South African side has a better understanding of sporting heartbreak than he, and there’s no-one whom Smith would have rather had alongside him when the weariness threatened to set in and the requirement began to dip. Boucher is a battler, and he’s got the scars to prove it. Arguably his dropped catch off Allan Donald at Trent Bridge in 1998 turned the tide of that series, and he had a starring role in their 2003 World Cup elimination as well. But in his 117th Test, he summoned every memory – good, bad and downright ugly – and ensured that, at the third attempt, he nailed the series win that, second only to victory in Australia, is the greatest goal of his career.Wicket of the day
The one moment that really rocked South Africa’s resolve came when Jacques Kallis was pinned lbw by Flintoff. Having at one stage been comfortably placed at 65 for 0, his departure left them floundering on 83 for 3, and with acrimony filling the air. Kallis was absolutely spitting as he left the crease. On Thursday evening he had expressed his wish that “common sense” would prevail, and that the troublesome sightscreen that contributed to his first-innings downfall would be extended to help him pick Flintoff’s full-length deliveries. Nothing of the sort happened, and when Flintoff flung down a thigh-high full-toss, Kallis didn’t come close to picking it. He possibly expected it to be called no-ball, but there was absolutely no question about the height. It tailed back into the crouching batsman, and would have hit middle two-thirds up.Double-bluff of the day
He arrived with his usual fanfare, but after 20 slightly underwhelming deliveries, Flintoff consulted with his captain, and arranged for a few subtle changes in the field. A short midwicket was posted, as well as a man back for the hook, which could mean only one thing – it was time for a bouncer barrage. In fact, Flintoff’s next delivery was quite the opposite end of the length scale. Out came the dreaded yorker that had caused such havoc in the first innings, and – although the weather was considerably brighter than it had been on Thursday evening – the effect was exactly the same. Neil McKenzie completely lost sight of it, and could only flinch in anticipation of impact as the ball scudded into his toe, just outside the line of off stump. Some might argue that McKenzie’s evasive action equated to playing a shot, hence he should have been given not out, but Steve Davis had no doubts as the finger was raised.Celebration of the day
As the afternoon wore on, Panesar began to extract more and more from the surface, and his excitement grew exponentially. Leaps and yelps and premature high-fives abounded, not least when Ashwell Prince emerged for a torrid examination out of the left-hander’s rough. In a single over, Panesar stuck up his own finger as if to give an lbw decision that had already been turned down, then hurtled off into the arms of the wicketkeeper to celebrate a caught-behind that was incorrectly refused by Aleem Dar. Dar rightly had a quiet word with Panesar at that point, but before his words could sink in, Prince was gone, caught behind off James Anderson at the other end of the pitch. Panesar’s reaction was somewhat akin to a gazelle stalking a lion – with big, bounding skips, he tracked down his celebrating colleague, leapt gleefully onto his back, and brought him tumbling to the turf.Non-appeal of the day
And yet, incredibly, for all his histrionics, Panesar went AWOL for the one appeal that might have made the difference. On 85, and with the Barmy Army in full voice, Smith propped forward to defend a big ripper that flicked off the finger of his right glove, and looped tamely into the hands of Tim Ambrose jogging round from behind the stumps. England’s fielders, to a man, were indifferent as they asked politely for the decision, though most of them were behind the bat so were in no position to tell. Panesar chose to keep his council as well, and in the face of such apathy, Dar had an easy decision to make.Mix-up of the day
Other than that gloved chance, and a vast legbreaking lbw appeal that would have required a brave decision, Smith’s performance was chanceless. But he could still have been dismissed on 79 after a rash call for a leg-bye from his partner, AB de Villiers. Smith responded, against his better judgement, as Tim Ambrose shed his right glove and hurtled round to field. A fierce shy came in on the bounce, but Ian Bell couldn’t gather, and the moment – and the match – was lost.Moment of the day
The final, brutal blow through midwicket that sealed South Africa’s first series win in England since 1965. He was made to wait for the moment, as Kevin Pietersen tweaked his offbreaks into the rough, and he even edged the penultimate ball down into the crease. But then, Pietersen served up a half-tracker, Smith swung lustily across the line, and raised his arms in instant triumph, as the dressing-room poured out to the middle in acclaim.

Graham Roberts: Nuno could sign Conor Coady for Tottenham

Former Tottenham captain Graham Roberts could see new Tottenham Hotspur manager Nuno Espirito Santo signing Conor Coady from former club Wolves.

The 28-year old was a big favourite of Nuno Espirito Santo’s when he was at Molineux, as he gave him the captain’s armband.

Coady appeared in all but one of Wolves’ Premier League games last season and has been an integral part of the club since joining back in 2015 from Huddersfield Town.

With plenty of Premier League experience, Roberts wouldn’t be surprised if he joins Nuno at Tottenham, saying: “He loves him, he’s made him his captain there when he was at Wolves.

“He done really well for him, so yeah, I wouldn’t rule that out.”

If Spurs opt to add Coady to their squad, this will mean that they have healthy competition for a starting birth at centre-back, with the likes of Davinson Sanchez, Joe Rodon and Eric Dier already at the club – Toby Alderweireld looks set to seal a summer exit to Qatar.

Alongside providing competition, Spurs lost 12 league games last season, leaking 45 goals in the process, something which Nuno will want to put right this season, in hope that the club can break back into the top four and play Champions League football in the 2022-2023 campaign.

CD suffer first defeat, ND clinch thriller

A round-up of the sixth day’s games of the HRV Cup, New Zealand’s domestic Twenty20 competition

Cricinfo staff10-Jan-2010Auckland captain Gareth Hopkins and Scott Styris combined well to end Central Districts’ unbeaten run in the competition with a seven-wicket win at the Colin Maiden Park. Their unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 124 helped secure the victory with 10 balls to spare, after they had encountered early difficulties during thechase of 156 – slipping to 32 for 3 in the sixth over. However, Hopkins and Styris calmed nerves, with Hopkins blasting 71 of 44 balls, including four boundaries and an identical number of sixes. Styris though, was more measured, his 45 taking 36 deliveries, with three fours and two sixes. Put in by Auckland, opener Mathew Sinclair was solely responsible for carrying Central Districts to a respectable 155 for 9. His 54-ball 69, comprising 10 fours, failed to inspire the rest of his colleagues though. Colin de Grandhomme was the most successful bowler for Auckland, picking up 3 for 22, while Styris and Daryl Tuffey bagged two apiece.Bradley Scott hit a last-ball six to enable Northern Districts edge out Canterbury by one wicket in a close encounter in Christchurch. Scott deposited seamer Ryan Burson over long on, when a four would have been good enough for the visitors. Together with tailender Brent Arnel they took 11 runs off the first five deliveries, including successive fours by Scott, before the left-arm seamer helped them claim an unexpected win. Chasing a modest 128, Northern Districts were in trouble at 75 for 8 in the 15th over before Tim Southee hit 32 off 16 balls, with five fours and one six. Along with Scott, who finished unbeaten on 20, they took 19 runs off the 18th over, before another 17 came off the last. Their late heroics overshadowed offspinner Rob Nicol’s five-for. Asked to bat, Canterbury could manage 127 for 9, with Michael Papps and Johann Myburgh top scoring with 28 each, while allrounder Joseph Yovich took 3 for 26 and Southee 2 for 32.Inclement weather meant no play was possible in the match between Otago and Wellington in Dunedin.

A round-up of the third round of the ICC World Cricket League Division 5 in Jersey

Cricinfo staff26-May-2008The third round of the ICC World Cricket League Division Five in Jersey again produced wins for the favourites, and with two rounds remaining, it seems that Afghanistan, Jersey, Nepal and USA are the teams likely to make the last four.A fantastic innings of 92 from Jersey’s Ryan Driver helped his side maintain their winning streak with a comprehensive 128-run victory over Bahamas. Driver, who has county experience in English cricket with Lancashire and Worcestershire, hit five fours and five sixes in his 85-ball innings as the home side made 206-4 in a 32-over game, before Andy Dewhurst destroyed the Bahamas batting order with 6 for 20.”The team is confident at the minute but we’re not being complacent at all. We’ve turned up every single day and beaten whatever opposition is against us. We’re getting better with every game,” said 29-year-old Driver. “We know the tournament is going to get a lot tougher but we want to rise to the occasion.”USA defeated Vanuatu by seven wickets, reaching a target of 89 with 4.4 overs to spare in a game in which rain prevented any play in the morning.Nepal again recovered from a shaky start with the bat as they comprehensively defeated Norway by 106 runs. They were grateful to 51 from Mahaboob Alam, who yesterday took ten wickets, to steer them to 204, before bowling Norway out for 98.And Afghanistan’s winning run also continued as four wickets from Mohammad Nabi Eisakhil and three wickets for Hamid Hassan saw them bowl out Botswana for 128 all out in another rain-affected match. In probably their best batting display of the event so far, 62 from Karim Khan Sadiq sealed a comfortable victory by seven wickets.Germany were the other winners of the day, enjoying a comprehensive win over Mozambique by seven wickets, with Ehsan Latif once again the star. He gained his second Man-of-the-Match award with figures of 3 for 13 which helped bowl out Mozambique for 96, although Latif received good support from Farooq Ahmed (3 for 14) and Javed Iqbal (3 for 40). In reply, Abdul Bhatti guided his side home with 32 not out as Germany reached their target with 21.5 overs to spare. The match between Singapore and Japan was abandoned without a ball being bowled.

Rayudu sparkles against Bengal at Secunderabad

A sparkling century from young tyro Ambati Rayudu saw Hyderabad amass 296 for four from the first day’s play of their Ranji Trophy elite group match against Bengal at Secunderabad on Thursday

Staff Reporter20-Dec-2002A sparkling century from young tyro Ambati Rayudu saw Hyderabad amass 296 for four from the first day’s play of their Ranji Trophy elite group match against Bengal at Secunderabad on Thursday.Rayudu pretty much held the innings together with Daniel Manohar, but scored almost twice as many runs off a similar number of deliveries as his partner. While Manohar made 64 off 163 balls with eight fours, Rayudu hit 134 off 165 balls with 16 fours and five sixes. The knock pushed Bengal onto the back foot, and at the close of play, the hosts were in a strong position, with D Vinay Kumar and Arjun Yadav unbeaten on 39 and 23 respectively.Kishan Choudhary rattles Himachal PradeshPlaying against Rajasthan at Jaipur, Himachal Pradesh found themselves bowled out cheaply on the first day of their Ranji Trophy elite group match, with medium-pacer Kishan Choudhary scalping four for 28 off 20.2 overs. No Himachal batsman crossed 30, and only Sandeep Sharma’s 28, Aashish Kapoor’s 26 and Shakti Singh’s 27. The visitors were bowled out for just 166 in 84.2 overs, and in reply, Rajasthan played out three overs without getting off the mark.Mumbai suffer batting collapse at DelhiMumbai’s batting continued to let their side down in this year’s Ranji campaign, collapsing against Railways on the first day of their Ranji Trophy elite group match on Wednesday.Off-spinner Kulamani Parida took four wickets for 30 runs off 16 overs, hastening the Mumbai decline. NS Shetty was the only batsman to offer a measure of resistance, but he too could scrape together only 26. At the close of the day’s play – which started after lunch due to heavy fog – Mumbai were 101 for seven.Amit Bhandari runs through AndhraPicking six wickets for 73 runs off 17.4 overs, medium-pacer Amit Bhandari ran through Andhra Pradesh in their Ranji Trophy elite group encounter against Delhi on Wednesday.Apark from Andhra skipper MSK Prasad and KS Sahabuddin, no other batsmen displayed any sign of application at the crease. Prasad made 59 off 132 balls, but Sahabuddin’s unbeaten 71 off 109 balls was a far more entertaining affair, displaying nine fours and one six and ruining Bhandari’s figures to some extent. Andhra were bowled out for 198 in just under 60 overs, and in reply, Delhi staggered to 59 for five, Sahabuddin starring again by taking four wickets for 16 runs off eight overs.Balaji rips through Orissa at ChennaiWith a deadly spell of five wickets for 25 runs off 12.1 overs, Lakshmipathy Balaji shattered the Orissa middle order in their Ranji elite group encounter against Tamil Nadu at Chennai.Orissa found themselves bowled out for only 122 in 42.1 overs, with Sanjay Raul making 24 as the top-scorer. Extras, of course, outscored him with 34. In their first innings, Tamil Nadu were 144 for two, with S Sriram and Hemang Badani unbeaten on 47 and 36 respectively.Zaidi scalps five against PunjabIf it had not been for 40s from Ravneet Ricky, Reetinder Sodhi and A Uniyal, Punjab would have been even more humiliated by Ashish Winston Zaidi’s five for 84 off 28 overs at Mohali.Punjab could only manage 208 in their first innings, with Ricky top-scoring with 45 and Uniyal following up with 44. Considering they were, at one stage, 21 for four, it may be looked upon as a fair recovery. In reply, Uttar Pradesh were 39 for no loss.Naidu gives Vidarbha the edgeVivek Naidu made an unbeaten 74 (100b, 13×4)that gave Vidarbha the upper hand in their Ranji Trophy plate group tie against Tripura at Nagpur. After Tripura were bowled out for a measly 102 in 53.1 overs, openers AV Deshpande and Naidu almost overhauled that on their own, putting on 84 for the first wicket.Deshpande hit 51 off just 49 balls (11×4) against Tripura’s toothless attack, and although he was dismissed, Naidu guided Vidarbha to 165 for two by the close of play, a lead of 63 runs.Leggie Mishra deflates BiharHaryana managed to skittle Bihar out for just 225 in their Ranji Trophy plate group match at Gurgaon on Wednesday, with leg-spinner Amit Mishra picking six for 86.Only Bihar opener MS Dhoni managed to play with any semblance of comfort, stroking 85 off 120 balls with 14 fours and one six. He did finally fall to Mishra, and the next eight wickets fell for only 120 runs. Bihar occupied 78.2 overs for their 225, and by stumps, Haryana had reached 23 for no loss.Maharashtra, Mandar Sane dominate J&K at PuneAnother leggie who performed the starring role for his side was Mandar Sane of Maharashtra, who ripped through Jammu & Kashmir to scalp eight for 43 off 16 overs at Pune.Jammu & Kashmir’s only significant batting performance came from opener H Fayaz Ahmed, who made 49 off 104 balls with nine fours. None of the others could play Sane at all, and the visitors collapsed to 131 all out in 48 overs. In reply, Maharashtra were 155 for two, with NA Godbole batting well on 68 off 116 balls.Hemanth Kumar strokes century at DelhiBatting fluently, C Hemanth Kumar hit 116 delightful runs off 251 balls (11×4), rescuing Kerala from 50 for two and taking them to 220 for two by the close of play against Services at Delhi.Hemanth Kumar was given good support by skipper Sunil Oasis, who made 71 off 157 balls (8×4), and the two kept the Services attack at bay for almost two and a half sessions, adding 170 runs for the third wicket. The day ended early due to bad light, but it left Kerala in a good position.
