From Peter Beardsley to Nick Barmby – Meet the players who crossed the Merseyside derby rivalry and played for both Liverpool and Everton

More than 40 players have played for both Merseyside rivals Liverpool and Everton

The longest-running top-flight derby in England, Liverpool and Everton have been continuously competing against each other since the 1962-63 season.

With their home stadiums within a mile of each other, tensions run high between these two clubs' fans every time on derby day.

Since the mid-1980s, the Liverpool-Everton rivalry has intensified on and off the field. This game has seen the most number of red cards than any other since the beginning of the Premier League era.

Despite the extent of their rivalry, many players have represented both Liverpool and Everton in their careers.

Who are they? Let's take a look!

Getty ImagesDick Foreshaw

Dick Foreshaw played for Liverpool and Everton during the period between the First and Second World Wars.

The majority of his appearances came as a striker for Liverpool between 1919 and 1927. He made 266 appearances for the Reds, scoring 117 goals.

In 1927, he joined Everton and scored eight goals in 42 appearances until 1929.

Foreshaw holds the record of being the only player ever to win league titles with both Liverpool (1921-22 & 1922-23) and Everton (1928-29).

English striker Tommy Johnson began his career with Manchester City in 1919 and in his 11-year stint with them, he scored 166 goals in 354 games.

Everton recognised his quality and signed him in 1930 for £6,000. He formed an incredible strike partnership with Dixie Dean as Everton won the Second Division Championship in Johnson's first full season at the club.

Johnson also featured for the Everton team that won the 1933 FA Cup final against his former team Manchester City.

In March 1934, he moved to Liverpool and made 36 appearances in his two-year stint at the club, scoring eight goals.

Salford-born Dave Hickson joined Everton in 1948. He made 139 appearances for the Toffees, scoring 63 goals before moving to Aston Villa in 1955. He then joined Huddersfield Town before returning to Everton in 1957.

In his second spell at the club, Hickson scored 32 goals in 86 appearances between 1957 and 1959.

Liverpool came calling in 1959 and Hickson was reunited with manager Bill Shankly. He scored 37 goals in just 60 games for the Reds before leaving the club in 1961.

An ever-present name in the Premier League in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Nick Barmby made a name for himself at Tottenham Hotspur.

Everton signed him in 1996 and over the next four years, the attacking midfielder featured in 116 games for them, scoring 18 goals.

In the summer of 2000, Liverpool made a move for Barmby, paying £6 million to Everton for his signature. He helped the Reds win the FA Cup and Uefa Cup in his first season at the club.

An interesting fact about Barmby is that he is one of just nine players to have scored in the Premier League for six different teams with other players being Nicolas Anelka, Craig Bellamy, Darren Bent, Marcus Bent, Andy Cole, Peter Crouch, Les Ferdinand and Robbie Keane.

Watson to help fill Harris gulf

Shane Watson’s greater experience of England and his capacity to bowl some of the kinds of spells Ryan Harris might have delivered for Australia appears set to squeeze him into the first Test team ahead of Mitchell Marsh

Daniel Brettig in Cardiff06-Jul-2015Shane Watson’s greater experience of England and his capacity to bowl some of the kinds of spells Ryan Harris might have delivered for Australia appears set to squeeze him into the first Test team ahead of Mitchell Marsh, as part of a bowling attack the assistant coach Craig McDermott still calls the best in the world. While the younger Marsh has turned plenty of heads with his bold batting on tour, the Australian team’s decision-makers still feel Watson offers more security as a bowler. Without Harris, the control Watson can offer with miserly spells and swing of both conventional and reverse varieties will be even more highly valued.McDermott, on his first Ashes tour since leaving the 1993 trip early due to a life-threatening twisted bowel, said that while Marsh’s bowling was improving, Watson still had something of an edge. “With the fourth seamer only bowling 10-15 overs tops depending on how they’re bowling and how the other guys are going, his control is excellent,” McDermott said. “He’s a lot more experienced and has been around for a long time so you’d expect his control and everything else to be better.”Mitch is still developing. He’s got some pace back; the No. 1 thing we were chasing for from him was to get some speed up. Him obviously being nervous with his injuries throughout the summer in Australia and wanting to stay on the paddock made him back off a little bit I think. Now he’s our No. 1 man over the 2km time trial and all that sort of stuff he’s got his fitness back, he’s lost some weight and he’s got his pace back up.”He’s actually swinging the ball nicely now, he bowled a lot better in the second innings in Essex than the first innings and also Canterbury. So considering he hasn’t had a lot of four-day cricket bowling it’s a work in progress but he’s coming on nicely.”Shane Watson appears in line to pip Mitchell Marsh for a place in the first Test•Getty ImagesWhile Australia’s order of preference for pace bowlers has been shaken up considerably by Harris’ exit, it remains likely that Peter Siddle will miss out on a place in the team unless the selectors plump for the unlikely option of choosing four fast men in addition to Watson. At the very least, Siddle’s quality bowling in Canterbury, Chelmsford and the Cardiff nets is keeping Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Johnson on their toes.”It’s disappointing for him but we’ve got to find someone else to do the job he does and I’m sure four of the guys we’ve got are quite capable of doing that,” McDermott said. “Peter Siddle’s bowled very well in the last couple of games, the other guys are getting back into their work, and Jono’s bowling quicker here than he has for a while I think and swinging the ball nicely. So those four frontline guys are all in the mix and if we don’t play four it’ll be a tough selection call.”Everyone who’s been through the World Cup and to the IPL in particular took a bit of time to get back into their work. Jono’s arm path has got a bit better over here, a bit higher and he’s got his seam in a better position, and he’s just got a real spring in his step at the minute, so that’s good for us and hopefully not good for the Poms.”Starcy and Josh basically had two and a half weeks off from game time, so just took a little bit of time to get back into their rhythm and bowling. They both bowled very well in the second innings in Essex, so we’re pretty happy with their preparation, and Sidds bowled well in both games and his pace got better as well.”Two of the vagaries of English conditions are the swing extractable from the Dukes ball and the smaller dimensions of the grounds, meaning runs can accrue quickly if bowlers get too greedy in their search for a “glory ball”. McDermott espoused the virtues of balance, and did not mind the thought of a new, more aggressive England going out searching for deliveries bowled in the fourth stump channel.”We’ve got to bowl our good lines and lengths which we did in Australia in the last series, and we stuck to our game plan,” he said. “You don’t want to attack too much, but you need still to attack. Our game with our bowling and fielding is to be attacking and aggressive, that’s the Australian way and the only way we know how to play.”The boys this morning were swinging the ball a lot. So it’s making sure you don’t get too greedy and using the crease to get your lines correct and make the batsmen play. If we do get a lot of swing we can use the crease to maximise that, and that’s pretty important for our attack and certainly Sidds is one who uses the crease well. The other guys do as well, but he uses it as good as anyone.”We’ve got a bowling attack that suits pretty much every facet of cricket, whether it’s a reverse wicket or a wicket that turns with seven left-handers is good for Lyono, and obviously if the wicket’s got green grass on it and goes through a bit, even if it’s a bit slower, the wicket’s still going to seam if it’s got some grass on it. Our attack is really well placed for whatever we get dished up.”

NZ concerns over Anderson and Watling

New Zealand have fitness worries over two key middle-order players ahead of the second Test at Headingley with allrounder Corey Anderson and wicketkeeper BJ Watling both struggling with injuries sustained at Lord’s

Andrew McGlashan26-May-2015New Zealand have fitness worries over two key middle-order players ahead of the second Test at Headingley with allrounder Corey Anderson and wicketkeeper BJ Watling both struggling with injuries sustained at Lord’s.Watling is only rated as 50-50 to be ready for Friday after picking up a knee injury on the opening day of the first Test which prevented him from keeping for the rest of the match although he did manage gutsy innings of 61 not out and 59. Anderson, meanwhile, suffered a back injury which meant he only bowled three overs in the second innings although he, too, batted well for 67 as New Zealand tried to save the match.”BJ’s not 100%, clearly his knee is still an issue,” coach Mike Hesson said. “He struggles to push off and get a lot of power so he’s a 50-50 at this stage. From Corey’s perspective bowling was painful and so was fielding so we’ll need to monitor that.”New Zealand have plenty of wicketkeeping cover should Watling not recover, in what would be a situation of history repeating itself after he was ruled out of the corresponding Test two years ago after being injured at Lord’s. Tom Latham took the gloves after lunch on the opening day, and collected six catches across the two innings, while Luke Ronchi, who is uncapped at Test level, is part of the squad.Anderson, though, is important to the balance of New Zealand’s side and Hesson acknowledged that his injury had left the frontline bowlers with an excessive workload which had played a part in England’s fightback on the fourth day, which is when Hesson sensed the match was moving away from the visitors.”It was really the fourth day that turned it around, we felt we bowled well enough to get three or four wickets in the morning but Alastair Cook and the way Ben Stokes and Joe Root played took the game away from us. That was the turning point. As a bowling unit we were a bowler light so that put a lot of pressure on other guys so they are stiff and sore and we need to make sure come Friday they are fresh.”In a free-flowing Test, the highest scoring one ever at Lord’s, the run-rates were high for most of the match. Hesson offered his support to offspinner Mark Craig, who finished with match figures of 2 for 173, and Tim Southee who conceded 266 runs in the match – the most ever by a New Zealand bowler in a Test.”Mark didn’t have his best Test, that’s fair, but he’s played nine Tests and won us three so he’s a very important member of our squad and he’ll be better off after this,” he said. “I also felt he got better as the game went on. Tim bowled some great spells and I think he suffered as we were a bowler light and had to bowl a heck of a lot more overs.”

Rutherford signs for Derbyshire

Derbyshire have added to their collection of overseas players for 2015 by bringing in New Zealand opener Hamish Rutherford

ESPNcricinfo staff06-May-2015Derbyshire have added to their collection of overseas players for 2015 by bringing in New Zealand opener Hamish Rutherford to cover for the absence of Tillakaratne Dilshan in June and July. Rutherford is in the UK with New Zealand’s Test squad but is not expected to be involved in the limited-overs leg.Martin Guptill’s Test recall has left Derbyshire currently without an overseas player, although the arrival of Hasim Amla on a short-term deal is imminent. He will then be succeeded by Dilshan, who will be replaced by Rutherford during Dilshan’s spell in the Caribbean Premier League. Nathan Rimmington has also signed to play in the NatWest T20 Blast.Rutherford, 26, has previously played county cricket for Essex. He will join up with Derbyshire in the middle of June and will be available across all three formats until the end of July. In total, he will be available for seven NatWest T20 Blast fixtures, three Championship matches and four Royal London Cup games during his stay.”Hamish is a talented top-order batsman who already has experience playing county cricket in English conditions,” Derbyshire performance director, Graeme Welch, said. “He has international pedigree in both the long and shorter formats, which will be key as he joins us at what is a busy part of the summer. He will join us fresh from a Test series versus England so he will be used to the conditions, match fit and raring to go.”Together with Guptill, Rimmington, Amla and Dilshan, we have now been able to reinforce our line-up with experienced overseas players across the entire season, which provides us with real options in all formats of the game.”

Derbyshire bank on Rimmington reputation

Derbyshire have signed one of cricket’s most renowned yorker bowlers, the Melbourne Renegade Nathan Rimmington, for the 2015 NatWest Blast

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Mar-2015Derbyshire have signed one of the doughtiest T20 death bowlers, Nathan Rimmington, for the entire 2015 NatWest T20 Blast. The signing puts effectiveness ahead of glamour with Derbyshire convinced they have secured one of the most parsimonious bowlers in the closing overs in the T20 game.Rimmington will variously combine with two international batsmen – New Zealand international Martin Guptill and Sri Lanka’s veteran Tillakaratne Dilshan – during the campaign.During his time with Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League, Rimmington, 32, has built a renowned reputation for closing out an innings with his trademark perfect yorkers gaining much attention. In 59 Twenty20 fixtures since the Big Bash began in 2011, he has claimed 65 wickets at 21 apiece, with an economy rate of just above seven runs an over. He starred in the longer format, too, and was also named in Cricket Australia’s Sheffield Shield team of the year.Derbyshire’s elite performance director, Graeme Welch, said: “Nathan brings a wealth of experience bowling at the death which will be vital as we look to progress in the NatWest T20 Blast.”People will have watched him in the Big Bash and know the quality he will bring to the side. Not only will he be a valuable asset at the end of the innings, he will also provide us with a proven strike bowler with the new ball.Derbyshire are trying to get Rimmington to England early so that he can warm up with some league cricket ahead of the Blast and ensure those celebrated yorkers are inch perfect from the outset.

Set 215 to win, New Zealand were comfortable at 176 for 2 in the 39th over, thanks to an opening stand of 114 between Suzie Bates and Rachel Priest. However, they lost their last eight wickets for just 34 runs and were bundled out for 210, with none of their last six batters contributing more than 7.Offspinner Anisa Mohammed claimed 4 for 41 to wreck New Zealand’s top order, while medium-pacer Shakera Selman chipped in with two late wickets and also effected the run-out of Morna Nielsen to secure the win for West Indies. After being inserted, West Indies had made 214 for 8. Their innings was built on Stafanie Taylor’s 66, and thirties from openers Kycia Knight and Natasha McLean. Regular blows from Georgia Guy and Nielsen (2 for 27) pegged West Indies back to 183 for 8, but Shanel Delay provided a late impetus by striking three fours during an unbeaten 29.

Farrell: A fractious relationship between Indian cricketers and journalists

The BCCI has officially responded to the controversy surrounding Virat Kohli by saying it had asked him to “maintain the dignity of the Indian team at all times, and avoid any such behaviour in the future.” The incident on Tuesday involved Kohli abusing an Indian reporter, which later transpired to be a case of mistaken identity.”The BCCI has been in touch with the Indian team management on this issue, and has advised that this kind of incident should not be repeated,” the board’s secretary Anurag Thakur said in a release. “The BCCI respects the role played by the media in covering and popularising the game of cricket, and acknowledges the support of the media, in its mission to administer and promote the game of cricket in India.”The BCCI would like to request the concerned parties to move on, and focus on the Indian cricket team’s campaign in the ongoing World Cup.”Thakur’s statement did not name Kohli, but the same statement, when forwarded by the team’s media manager RN Baba, had his name in the subject line.A report published by Jasvinder Sidhu in the on Wednesday described how Kohli “continuously pointed his finger” at him, and repeatedly made abuses in Hindi. Kohli then reportedly relayed an apology through another journalist, who was told by Kohli that it was a case of mistaken identity. The publication, however, decided not to dwell any longer on the subject.”In the interest of India’s World Cup campaign, we do not wish to take this matter any further,” Sukhwant Basra, Hindustan Times’ sports editor, said. “Anurag Thakur has been very accommodating and it is a refreshing change from the cricket administrators of the recent past.”The matter was raised at the pre-match presser but R Ashwin, who was the player at the presser, remained neutral, saying that the entire episode was “definitely not in my jurisdiction”.”It’s very heartening to see the media turn up in huge numbers and try to support us. But I mean, this is my take on it,” Ashwin said. “I think the media has a responsible way of taking cricket back home in a responsible fashion, taking cricket to the public in the way it needs to be taken. There are times when I’m not happy with that, but that’s my opinion. But there are other times when you support the players and it’s very important to take the game forward.”Former India batsman VVS Laxman believed Kohli’s conduct was unbecoming of a Test captain, and that he had to learn to keep his emotions in check while representing the team.”It is not right on Virat’s part, irrespective of what has happened,” Laxman told . “Whether it is right or wrong from the journalist’s point of view, it is important to do that in closed doors, but not in the public domain or in public space. He has to remember that he is a role model and people will be watching him, will be following him, and will be wanting to emulate him.”It is very important to keep his emotions under control. Especially now that he is captain of the Indian Test team, it is very important for him to take notice of what he is doing in the public space, especially during the World Cup.”I also request the media fraternity to not blow this story out of proportion, because it is important that Virat and the Indian team concentrate on the job at hand, which is to win the World Cup.”

Anamul, Nasir to miss Zimbabwe Test

Anamul Haque and Nasir Hossain will be unavailable for the first Test against Zimbabwe, after they were both picked in the BCB XI side that will take part in the Acharya Memorial Trophy in Kolkata from October 25 to celebrate 150 years of the Eden Gardens

ESPNcricinfo staff18-Oct-2014Anamul Haque and Nasir Hossain will be unavailable for the first Test against Zimbabwe, after they were both picked in a BCB XI side that will take part in the Acharya Memorial Trophy in Kolkata from October 25 to celebrate 150 years of the Eden Gardens. Both players were part of Bangladesh’s Test squad last month against West Indies.Bangladesh will also be without the services of Elias Sunny, who too was selected in the BCB XI squad that will take on teams from Mumbai, Bangalore and the hosts Kolkata.Anamul has been made captain of the team, with Naeem Islam appointed his deputy. The make-up of the BCB XI squad means that the rest of the players will be kept in consideration for the first Test which also begins on October 25, at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.Nasir is one of several Bangladesh players whose poor form this year has been under the scanner. The West Indies tour was seen as crucial for the likes of him, Mahmudullah, Shamsur Rahman, Imrul Kayes and even Tamim Iqbal. While Mahmudullah and Tamim have done well and Shamsur Rahman and Imrul Kayes now remain in contention for the first Test match, the axe has fallen on Nasir and Anamul, who had started the West Indies tour with an ODI century. But since then, Anamul only managed scores of 7, 0, 19*, 15, 9 and 0 in the remaining games. Overall, he averages 9.12 in Test cricket. Nasir, on the other hand, is suffering his first bad season after making his debut in 2011. He averages 14.14 in four Tests this year, having made just 99 runs. This leaves the door slightly open for the likes of Shamsur, Imrul and Shuvagata Hom Chowdhury to be retained in the Test squad. Marshall Ayub, having not been named in the BCB XI, can also be considered to be competing for one spot. Among the bowlers, seamer Shahadat Hossain and legspinner Jubair Hossain are likely to be fighting for a single spot.BCB XI squad: Anamul Haque (capt) , Liton Kumar Das, Mohammad Mithun, Sabbir Rahman, Soumya Sarker, Nasir Hossain, Naeem Islam, Nurul Hasan (wk), Arafat Sunny, Elias Sunny, Mohammad Shahid, Abul Hasan, Kamrul Islam Rabbi, Taskin Ahmed, Muktar Ali
