Ryan Harris downs Pakistan yet again

Ryan Harris was named Man of the Match for his second successive five-for•Getty ImagesAustralia mercilessly ripped through a feeble Pakistan at the WACA to keep alive the prospect of inflicting upon the tourists only their second 5-0 whitewash in ODIs. Michael Hussey and Nathan Hauritz starred with the bat, before Ryan Harris tore through the batting with a second successive five-for to set up a crushing 135-run win. Remarkably, given how poor Pakistan have been in this country, this was Australia’s first win over them in an ODI in Perth.Pakistan’s tour has been one long, dark and miserable spiral since the fourth day of the second Test in Sydney and it continued with another dispirited, stuttering performance. They did battle in the field but let Australia get away at a critical stage once again, and contrasting fifties from Michael Hussey and Nathan Hauritz then took them to 277.For much of the innings, control was a loose concept. Every time Pakistan struck, an Australian partnership settled. But every time the batsmen threatened to take over, Pakistan struck, so that momentum never rested decisively with either side. The final shift, however, came after the 40th over as an 80-run partnership between Hussey and Hauritz propelled Australia to the kind of total Pakistan haven’t looked like chasing down at any point this summer.Australia were 6 for 190 at that point and James Hopes had just been dismissed by the excellent Mohammad Asif. Hussey had hung around unnoticed from the 22nd over, stealthily keeping Australia afloat. Hauritz frustrated Pakistan with the ball through the Tests and today he did so with bat, swinging four sixes with all the freedom of a man no longer trying to prove himself in a 39-ball 53.Hussey had hit one boundary in his fifty, but timing is everything and as he did in Adelaide, he utilized the PowerPlay beautifully, ensuring that sixty runs came in the last six overs. Death bowling was once Pakistan’s trump card, but on this tour it has cost them.Pakistan had shaded the start, much of the groundwork laid in a fine opening spell from Asif, who immediately hit the length that makes him so dangerous, not allowing batsmen to drive or to defend back with any great ease.Brad Haddin provided Australia with some momentum but just when he was looking dangerous, he went. Michael Clarke was undone in a manner in which he has sent back so many batsmen – a smooth direct hit from cover running him out. Ricky Ponting scratchily tried to soldier on as Pakistan giving him plenty of pulls. It wasn’t convincing and it didn’t last, as Shahid Afridi got one to go across him; now Pakistan were on top.Cameron White initially looked every inch a man averaging 60 in the series when he came in. But as the heat picked up and Saeed Ajmal came in, he had to fight. The doosra wasn’t picked but he didn’t get out to it and there were plenty of singles to keep things moving.Ajmal’s spell through the middle overs was crucial; only two boundaries came between overs 22 and 36, but only one wicket fell. That was White, frustrated despite having sneaked into the 40s. It should’ve been Pakistan’s innings from there, but Hussey and Hauritz had other ideas. The chase was never on. Pakistan have long been renowned for producing fast bowlers, but that assembly line is no match for Australia. They have been without Brett Lee for a while, Ben Hilfenhaus is also injured and they chose to rest both Mitchell Johnson and Doug Bollinger for this game. Ryan Harris and Peter Siddle were their third new-ball pairing of the series and they’ve hardly missed anyone progressing towards, potentially, a whitewash.Harris bustled in Adelaide a few two nights ago and coolly picked up a maiden five-for and he did much the same here. He bowled at the brisk pace all Australian pacemen seem to have, in the mid-140s kmph, and curved the ball considerably away from the batsmen. Salman Butt was fed a few coming in, before the inevitable one angled across him got the edge. Younis Khan has had time off from the game but his form seems no closer to coming back to him and he was soon gone, fishing uncertainly at another outswinger.Siddle was more erratic but carried with him the menace he has done through a luckless summer. If his two wickets were gifts, no one has deserved them more. Umar Akmal and Fawad Alam steadied the ship, as they did in Adelaide, and Afridi swung carelessly, but Harris bulldozed his way through, returning for a double-wicket maiden to essentially finish things off.

Tim Spiers drops Hee-chan Hwang update

Wolverhampton Wanderers will look to sign Hee-chan Hwang permanently this season.

What’s been said?

That’s according to a claim made by Tim Spiers, with the journalist revealing in a recent Q&A on The Athletic that Wolves will activate their £12m option to purchase the forward from RB Leipzig at some point this season.

In his post, Spiers said: “I think they’ll look to sign him either way, £12m is a bargain for a player with his attributes in my opinion. Scored four goals from five shots on target, works incredibly hard, shows intelligence and good movement.

“And this is only from the opening months of his Premier League career. I think there’s more to come from him and he can fit into a variety of systems. Great squad player at least for that fee.”

The journalist also rubbished reports suggesting that Wolves’ move to sign the 25-year-old could be hijacked by a bigger club, stating in a post on Twitter: “Some random speculation linking Hwang with a move elsewhere in January…

“Contractually he’s locked in as Wolves’ player for the season. Power is completely in Wolves’ hands and it’s their decision whether to activate the deal they’ve agreed. No other club can muscle in.”

Fans will be elated

Considering just how impressive Hwang has been since joining Wolves on a season-long loan deal this summer, the news that the club will look to make the South Korea international’s deal a permanent move, be that in January or at the end of the season, is sure to have left fans elated.

Indeed, over his 11 Premier League appearances for the club, the £9.9m-rated man has already scored four goals and created one big chance for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 0.8 shots and making 0.5 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the £71k-per-week forward average a SofaScore match rating of 6.82, ranking him as Bruno Lage’s 11th-best performer in the top flight of English football.

As such, should Wolves indeed go on to complete a deal for the 25-year-old this season, it would undoubtedly provide a huge boost to the club’s chances of establishing themselves as a regular top-half Premier League side – an outcome that would delight everyone involved with the club.

Preview: Spurs vs Brighton

Tottenham Hotspur will make the trip from north to west London this evening to take on Brentford as Antonio Conte’s men look to strengthen their hold on a place in the Premier League’s top four.

Spurs are currently fourth but their place in the Champions League spots is feeble, with goal difference the only factor separating them and fifth-placed Arsenal.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-levy-conte-paratici-thfc” title= “Read the latest Spurs news!”]

Having been dealt a setback last weekend when losing 1-0 to Brighton, Conte’s men can’t afford to slip up again against the Bees.

It is a must-win for the Lilywhites and so here is how Football FanCast believe Spurs will set up.

Tottenham XI: Lloris, Romero, Dier, Davies, Emerson, Sessegnon, Betancur, Hojbjerg, Kulusevski, Son, Kane (3-4-3)

In terms of formation, we expect Conte to stick with his preferred 3-4-3 set-up at the Brentford Community Stadium, with Sergio Reguilon dropping out of the XI in favour of the £58k-per-week Ryan Sessegnon.

The Spaniard returned to the starting lineup against the Seagulls having come on as a substitute the week before against Aston Villa, with Matt Doherty sustaining an injury that has since ruled the wing-back out for the remainder of the season.

However, it was a poor display from the 25-year-old who completed just 63% of his passes whilst failing to provide a single interception, clearance or block whilst making only one tackle.

Labelled as “pathetic” by journalist Tom Young, the £43m left-wing-back has featured in six of Spurs’ last seven matches having regained his place after Ryan Sessegnon sustained a hamstring injury.

The 21-year-old has since returned from his setback, making the bench for the north London outfit’s last two games and could be in contention for a return to the starting lineup.

Prior to his injury, the Englishman had arguably his best run of games in a Spurs shirt, featuring in seven out of eight matches from late January to early March.

Tottenham insider John Wenham was full of praise for Sessegnon after a 3-0 win over Norwich City, calling the wing-back “amazing.”

Conte will have to get his team selection spot on against Brentford with there being no more room for slip-ups with just six games to go.

Everton interested in Benfica ace Everton

Lots of Everton fans have been left flocking to some transfer news on Benfica ace Everton.

As per UOL Esporte (via EFC DAILY), the Goodison Park faithful have now registered their interest in signing the Brazil international.

Of course, due to his name, the story is certainly grabbing attention from some supporters of the Merseyside club, and a few are already joking they would like to sign him purely because he would sell shirts.

However, digging deeper into what he could actually offer on the pitch, he seems no better than Andros Townsend or Demarai Gray, who have both scored more goals and averaged more key passes and crosses than the winger in their respective domestic leagues so far this season (WhoScored).

Nonetheless, the news of his potential arrival from Portugal seems to have split the Toffees fanbase.

Elliot Lee has joined Paul Mullin on the bench at Wrexham, with Phil Parkinson explaining why the 14-goal midfielder was a substitute against MK Dons.

Red Dragons boast strength in depthAble to rest & rotate when requiredBoss eager to avoid taking fitness risksWHAT HAPPENED?

The Red Dragons have, courtesy of Hollywood co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, been able to piece together a squad that boasts the depth required to deal with a gruelling 46-game League Two campaign. With so many matches to take in – as domestic cup competitions are also added to the pot – rest and rotation will be required at times.

Parkinson has taken to shuffling his pack of late, with star striker Mullin starting a couple of games among the replacements. He was joined on the bench by talismanic midfielder Lee for a trip to Stadium MK, with the pair handed cameo roles in a 1-1 draw that lasted less than half-an-hour apiece.

WHAT PARKINSON SAID ABOUT LEE

Explaining Lee’s absence from the Wrexham starting XI, with George Evans and James Jones among those currently nursing injuries, Parkinson said: “Elliot has played more minutes than any other player. I just felt that to play him again after putting so much effort in at the weekend and the midweek game at Sutton would put him at risk of maybe getting a little injury. With the injuries we have got, I didn't want to take that risk. I said to Elliot: 'it would be great for you to come on after 60 minutes when the game has opened up' and he was magic when he came on.”

Experience comes good for Kent

You cannot beat experience. Although 22-year-old James Harris tried to stand alone on centre stage, it was two thirty-somethings, Brendan Nash and Darren Stevens, who ended up sharing the honours by scoring unbeaten centuries

And although 22-year-old James Harris tried with all his might to stand alone on centre stage, it was two thirty-somethings, Brendan Nash and Darren Stevens, who ended up sharing the honours by scoring unbeaten centuries to mastermind a spectacular Kent fightback.Harris still deserved plenty of praise for an encouraging performance that, at its peak, saw the young fast bowler boasting figures of 4 for 33 from 12 overs – a burst that gave Glamorgan real hope of following Tuesday’s win against Northants with a commanding start to this game. But, by close of play, even he looked battle-worn as century-makers Nash and Stevens took their well deserved applause for innings of contrasting style but equal worth. Their unbroken stand of exactly 200, in 46 overs, left Kent in command and ready to push for a victory that would underpin their promotion challenge. For both batsmen, this was a second championship hundred of the season. And by joining forces so effectively they not only lifted the hosts away from the early difficulty of 110 for 4 but also quashed at least some of Glamorgan’s enthusiasm.Harris, who missed the first half of the campaign while recovering from a groin operation, produced a beauty with the new ball to remove Rob Key and then needed something a little less menacing to find the edge of Ben Harmison’s bat.But it was two wickets in two balls from Harris soon after an hour’s stoppage for rain that really threatened Kent- and left Glamorgan believing they could quickly follow Tuesday’s first win of the season with a second four-day success. Sam Northeast’s attractive half-century ended when he played across the line while Mike Powell – up against the county who bade him farewell after last summer – snicked fatally to fall for a painful golden duck.Enter 36-year-old Stevens to face the hat-trick delivery. He blunted that threat with a forward defensive but, within minutes, boundaries were flying off his bat. Three came off Huw Waters, three more flowed in quick succession when John Glover took up the attack and for a time it looked as though Stevens would reach three figures before Nash – even though Nash had a 30-run start.Nash is not the sort of batsman to be easily ruffled by a friend or foe, however. The 34-year-old former West Indies Test batsman carried on in his unhurried way, punishing the bad ball when it came and happy to admire Stevens’ stand and deliver style at the other end.In fact, having rushed to 50 from 42 balls, Stevens slowed a touch while Nash accelerated – duly completing his century from 158 deliveries with 14 fours and celebrating the landmark with a rocking-the-cradle salute to his new-born son. As for Stevens, there was a rare scare on 92 when he almost ran himself out. But the hundred arrived, safely enough, from 125 balls with 18 fours and, like Nash, he looked hungry for more at the close.During the course of his innings, Stevens passed 10,000 first-class runs. On top of that, the power of his hitting damaged Marcus North – who needed ice treatment on his left ankle after stopping a shell of a drive at short extra cover – and almost removed umpire David Millns, who was struck, but not harmed, by a fierce pull while standing at square leg.For Glamorgan – who also had Waters off the field at one stage with a stomach upset – some good news was needed. It came at tea with the announcement that head coach Matthew Mott is staying with the county, despite having been interviewed for the head coach job at New Zealand.

January 19 will see the Herons return to the pitch for the first time in 2024, with Messi and co. taking on Los Cuscatlecos. The match will be played on the road in San Salvador at the Estadio Cuscatlán, one day before the USMNT take on Slovenia in Texas in an international friendly. In addition to the El Salvador friendly, the Herons have also been linked with a match against Argentine powerhouse River Plate Thursday, that comes on top of previous rumors of matches against Al-Hilal and Newells Old Boys.

With the match being played one day before the USMNT take the pitch, both Gregg Berhalter and Tata Martino will have to make a decision on where Benjamin Cremaschi and Deandre Yedlin go. The young attacker made his international debut in a friendly in September against Oman, but is not yet cap-tied due to not competing in an official competitive match. Yedlin, meanwhile, has been on the outskirts of the program of late, but could feature in January due to it not being an official FIFA window.

WHAT INTER MIAMI SAID

“We’re excited to start announcing our preseason plans and preparations ahead of a thrilling 2024 campaign. We look forward to facing the El Salvador national team in what will be a good first test for our squad against the best players from the country,” said Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director Chris Henderson.

From Peter Beardsley to Nick Barmby – Meet the players who crossed the Merseyside derby rivalry and played for both Liverpool and Everton

More than 40 players have played for both Merseyside rivals Liverpool and Everton

The longest-running top-flight derby in England, Liverpool and Everton have been continuously competing against each other since the 1962-63 season.

With their home stadiums within a mile of each other, tensions run high between these two clubs' fans every time on derby day.

Since the mid-1980s, the Liverpool-Everton rivalry has intensified on and off the field. This game has seen the most number of red cards than any other since the beginning of the Premier League era.

Despite the extent of their rivalry, many players have represented both Liverpool and Everton in their careers.

Who are they? Let's take a look!

Getty ImagesDick Foreshaw

Dick Foreshaw played for Liverpool and Everton during the period between the First and Second World Wars.

The majority of his appearances came as a striker for Liverpool between 1919 and 1927. He made 266 appearances for the Reds, scoring 117 goals.

In 1927, he joined Everton and scored eight goals in 42 appearances until 1929.

Foreshaw holds the record of being the only player ever to win league titles with both Liverpool (1921-22 & 1922-23) and Everton (1928-29).

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTommy Johnson

English striker Tommy Johnson began his career with Manchester City in 1919 and in his 11-year stint with them, he scored 166 goals in 354 games.

Everton recognised his quality and signed him in 1930 for £6,000. He formed an incredible strike partnership with Dixie Dean as Everton won the Second Division Championship in Johnson's first full season at the club.

Johnson also featured for the Everton team that won the 1933 FA Cup final against his former team Manchester City.

In March 1934, he moved to Liverpool and made 36 appearances in his two-year stint at the club, scoring eight goals.

Getty ImagesDave Hickson

Salford-born Dave Hickson joined Everton in 1948. He made 139 appearances for the Toffees, scoring 63 goals before moving to Aston Villa in 1955. He then joined Huddersfield Town before returning to Everton in 1957.

In his second spell at the club, Hickson scored 32 goals in 86 appearances between 1957 and 1959.

Liverpool came calling in 1959 and Hickson was reunited with manager Bill Shankly. He scored 37 goals in just 60 games for the Reds before leaving the club in 1961.

Getty ImagesNick Barmby

An ever-present name in the Premier League in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Nick Barmby made a name for himself at Tottenham Hotspur.

Everton signed him in 1996 and over the next four years, the attacking midfielder featured in 116 games for them, scoring 18 goals.

In the summer of 2000, Liverpool made a move for Barmby, paying £6 million to Everton for his signature. He helped the Reds win the FA Cup and Uefa Cup in his first season at the club.

An interesting fact about Barmby is that he is one of just nine players to have scored in the Premier League for six different teams with other players being Nicolas Anelka, Craig Bellamy, Darren Bent, Marcus Bent, Andy Cole, Peter Crouch, Les Ferdinand and Robbie Keane.
